5-0 out of 5 stars Bruce Springsteen
Bruce Springsteen grew up in Freehold, New Jersey and is one of three children, both younger. Bruce got his first guitar in his young years, and right then he was hooked on music. When his parents moved to California, Bruce stayed in the attic of a surfboard factory in New Jersey. While attending Ocean County Community College, he started his first band, the Castles, when he was only 16 years old. From then on he was in and out of bands constantly, until he started "Bruce Springsteen and the E street band". He has had many accomplishments with his band like in 1985 he won the Grammy award for the song "Dancing in the Dark". Another one was in 1999 when he was finally introduced to the Rock'n Roll hall of fame. When he is not on tour, he usually plays solo gigs and local concerts in his home town in New Jersey.
The book Rock'n Roll Hall of Famers by Susie Derkins was packed with info about Bruce Springsteen. All of the paragraphs were strait to the point and easy to understand. There were many pictures so you could imagine what the scene was like. Under the pictures there were fairly large captions telling everything that was happening. All the main words had italics, and on some pages a Did-You-Know box was on inserted. The table of contents had the book organized in chapters. I liked the long captions under the pictures. That helped me when I was picturing Bruce Springsteen's life in my mind. I recommend this book to any Rock'n Roller, and especially the ones who just love Bruce Springsteen and his music.

Product Description
A leading Catholic ethicist and teacher discusses the phenomenon of Bruce Springsteen and the moral core of his music. In a time when popular culture is under attack as a symptom if not actually the cause of national decay, Father Primeaux argues that Springsteen's work actually enhances and enriches our moral vision. The Boss is discussed, analyzed and ultimately applauded for the greatness of his art and the powerful conscience of his music. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A nifty bit of Bruce knowledge for the moderate fanatic...
This book is rather tiny; you won't find too much information in it.However, it has some really good information about his life and career as well as lesser-known facts about his childhood. An excellent introductionto Bruce's life and its influence on his work. Also, there are interestingquotes from him and others involved in his career regarding his rise to thestatus of rock 'n' roll legend.Well worth the few dollars you'll pay forthis book.(Bruce "missionaries" trying to spread the word: keepthis on your coffee table. Many times I have had people from my dorm comein, flip through the book, then ask to hear a certain song...) ... 1-0 out of 5 stars worthless junk
Read the Library Journal review above. They've got it right. This is junk, pure and simple - a hack job designed to let Mike Appel, one of the vilest men in the music business, whine about Bruce. There is no substance here, no real thought, certainly no real biography.I wish I could give it zero stars - even that is more than it deserves.

4-0 out of 5 stars An amazing journey into artist development
Down Thunder Road is presented on the back cover as somehow contreversial and anti-Springsteen. Well, as a Springsteen fan, I did not found this book outrageous at all, but on the contrary fascinating. It is an amazingjourney in the development of a new artist that will eventually become apopular music icon. Down Thunder Road is not only the recount of anadventure, it is also a music business case, full with a copy of thecontracts, record company memos and court orders. Fascinating ! ... Read more

Product Description
When Bruce Springsteen went back on the road in 1984, he opened every show by shouting out, "one, two, one, two, three, four," followed by the droning synth chords of "Born in the U.S.A." Max Weinberg hit his drums with a two-fisted physicality that cut through the swelling chords. With a rolled-up red kerchief around his head and heavy black boots under his faded jeans, Springsteen looked like the character of the song, and from the very first line ("Born down in a dead man’s town") he sang with the throat-scraping desperation of a man with his back against the wall. When he reached the crucial lines, though, the guitars and bass dropped out and Weinberg switched to just the hi-hat. Springsteen’s voice grew a bit more private and reluctant as he sang, "Nowhere to run. Nowhere to go." It was as if he weren’t sure if this were an admission of defeat or the drawing of a line in the sand. But when the band came crashing back at full strength—building a crescendo that fell apart in the cacophony of Springsteen’s and Weinberg’s wild soloing, paused and then came together again in the determined, marching riff—it was clear that the singer was ready to make a stand. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not What I Expected
I was excited at the prospect of the entire 33 1/3 series and decided to start with this one. What a train wreck!

One, this has very little to do with the actual recording of the album. It is almost entirely the author's opinion of Springsteen's songwriting. In essence, a critical review of his songwriting. And a critical review that comes off like a college freshman's term paper.

Two, the book goes all over in place and time with no rhyme or reason. The author will go off on a tangent about something and then repeat what was already said 3 or 4 pages back.It really should have been told chronologically.

Three, the author dissects more unreleased songs and previously recorded songs than songs that actually ended up on the album. It doesn't help to review songs that the reader has never had a chance to hear and then compare them to the album cuts.Totally ludicrous.

So, overall, not a total waste of time, as there was some interesting things sprinkled about, but a very, very frustrating read. And if you're really interested in hearing about the band in the studio, the engineers, how everything is set up, how it is recorded, what equipment was used, et cetera - forget it.None of that information is here.

5-0 out of 5 stars An informative read
Geoffrey Hime's tome on Born in the U.S.A. is a must buy for any serious music fan. I had forgotten how good it was. Reading it brought back lots of pleasant memories. Himes makes a number of good points about the album particularly his insight how he pared down his lyrics making them more effective. Also, he makes note of Springsteen's use of humour in songs like Glory Days. He really delves into the genesis of some songs like the title track. Also as an added bonus there's lots of information here on the making of Nebraska. There is a very valuable disography at the back of the book. Reading the book brought back a lot of amusing memories how right-wingers such as Ronald Reagan and George Will embraced this album and artist. They didn't quite get Springsteen and his work. Overall, this is a valuable addition to any music fanatic's library. ... Read more

Product Description
A labor of love, "The Ties That Bind" is an encyclopedic examination of the people, places, events, and recordings significant in the artistry and thirty-plus year career of one of America’s most eminent and enduring rock icons. Ranging from the Academy Awards to Warren Zevon and all points in between (including the mighty E Street Band), the encyclopedia examines all aspects of the Springsteen universe, including artistic, intellectual, and personal relationships, influences and the influenced, significant others, career evolution, recordings, side ventures, political forays, geographic bases, and, of course, legendary shows and venues.

With 300 entries (plus sidebars) and 100 photos (many previously unpublished), this is the first book that systematically and objectively chronicles Springsteen’s life and music. Plus, "The Ties That Bind" provides lists of concert appearances, television appearances, and E Street Band tribute bands and tribute albums; the text of Springsteen’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame speeches; and a lyric index, amid other comprehensive indexing.

Damon Gough (Badly Drawn Boy) and Mike Mills (of R.E.M.) each contribute the nicely written forewords.

Award-winning journalist, Gary Graff, is assisted by an elite ensemble of music writers hailing from Backstreets magazine, Rolling Stone, No Depression, and elsewhere, including Chris Phillips, Steve Knopper, Robert Santelli, Daniel Durchholz, Erik Flannigan, Robert Bader, Michael Norman, Jonathan Pont, Lynne Margolis, Matt Lee, and Jeffrey Zaslow. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A well balanced summary of religions and rites.
Although I said above that it's a well balanced summary, this book does have a heavy leaning towards Christianity. Jim Willis was, in fact, a Christian preacher for a period and he certainly knows the Bible. But he is not coming from a biased, dogmatic point of view. He is quite willing to point out shortcomings in Christian thinking - such as some of the anti-feminist practices, while still filling in the reader on what has gone down through the centuries and what we have now.

Additionally, Willis has presented a thorough explanation of pretty much every religious practice in the world, from Zen Buddhism to Druidism, Exorcism to Spiritualism, none of which the reader would tend to think was coming from a Christian, in that almost every subject is treated fairly, giving valid praise when fitting.

Although a proper study of any one of the topics covered in this encyclopedia would need a separate text book, with 490 pages, The Religion Book is an excellent general coverage of many separate religious subjects, and sits well on any bookshelf as a religious reference book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nearly 300 entries gather facts to help students
If it's a comprehensive, encyclopedic view of key religious figures, prophets, deities and places which is needed, Jim Willis' The Religion Book is the book for you. Nearly 300 entries gather facts to help students and readers understand common religious topics, from Celtic Druids and Native American spirituality to Greek gods, Judaism, and India religions. The Religion Book is recommended as an essential overall library reference.
