Karate Warriors

The title of the book I chosen to read is called Karate Warriors. What this book is all about is Karate. The author's name is Austin St. John. This book does not really have a conflict because it is mainly about is how the martial arts teacher teaches you steps of how to do karate. He teaches you a lot of steps but the ones I liked the most are the Flying Side Kick and Spinning Kick He teaches you all kinds of steps. The martial arts teacher wears a black belt. Only the greatest warriors are able to ware the black belt it is an honor to wear it. He has been wearing that belt for at least 2 years. He also teaches you about your attitude you, you have to have a positive attitude about yourself and you have to know when to defend yourself and when to attack. He also teaches you everything you need to do to be champion like him. Being a champion in karate includes 1 to 1 and a half hours of pure exercise. He also tells you that you should eat a lot for protein. You should also eat a lot so all that fat you get into your body and then you do exercise you'll burn it and it will turn in to muscle. At last it has a Quote it says, "The harder you work the harder it is to surrender. I recommend you to think about this quote and put it to work.

1-0 out of 5 stars Red Danger....
This book was one of the most uninformative books i've ever read about martial arts.Nothing that special, a lot of what a person can learn from joining a badminton team.It didn't seem very organized at all, you could get more information on martial arts from just surfing the internet.I was very disappointed as i have seen every episode of the first and second season of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.... ughh Jason really let me down this time.

2-0 out of 5 stars The Beginners Guide...
Karate Warrior is a beginners guide geared more towards a young audience, after all look who wrote it, Austin St. John the former "Red Ranger" on the kid TV series Power Rangers. It has sections that tellabout the philosophies of martial arts, physical conditioning, mentaloutlook, etc. There are many color photos on each page that illustrate whatis being talked about. It shows how to do a few martial arts moves in theback of the book, which is one of the few good points of the book. 12 yearolds and younger might want to read this book, but I don't recommend it toanyone above that age. Like it suggests in the book, if you are reallyinterested in martial arts, try to join one of the many martial artstraining groups. ... Read more

Excerpt: Herbert 'Pa' Austin, 1st Baron Austin KBE (8 November 1866 23 May 1941) was an English automobile designer and builder who founded the Austin Motor Company. The son of a farmer, he was born in Little Missenden, Buckinghamshire in South East England, but the family moved to Wentworth Woodhouse, near Rotherham, Yorkshire in 1870 when his father was appointed farm bailiff. Herbert Austin first went to the village school, later continuing his education at Rotherham Grammar School. In 1884 he emigrated to Australia, with an uncle, on his mother's side, who lived in Melbourne, Australia, but had recently returned to England on a family visit. They travelled to Australia by ship, via the Cape. He initially started work with his uncle who was the works manager at a general engineering firm, Mephan Ferguson, in North Melbourne. However, after two years, he left to join a company called Cowen, which was an agent for printing equipment and Crossley engines. He later worked for the Longlands Foundry Company in Melbourne which made locomotive boilers, wheels and gold mining equipment. Herbert Austin attended Hotham Art School in Melbourne to develop his skills in drawing. During this time, he submitted a design for a swing bridge over the Yarra River at Spencer Street, Melbourne, but did not win the competition organised by the Government of Victoria. He met and married his wife, Helen Dron, in Melbourne. She was born in Melbourne, the seventh daughter of Scottish parents. Herbert and Helen were married on 26 December 1887 and bought a house in...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=855148 ... Read more

Product Description

After fifteen years as a Sports Illustrated writer, pleading for interviews with large men in possession of larger egos, Austin Murphy decides to bail out. The time has come, he concludes, to fly beneath the radar of big-league sports, to while away a season with the Johnnies. So, he moves his family to the middle of Minnesota to chronicle a season at St. John's, a Division III program that has reached unparalleled success under the unorthodox guidance of John "Gags" Gagliardi.

The Sweet Season is an account of what happens when a family pulls up stakes and spends months in a strange and wonderful place. It is also, not incidentally, the story of the most incredible football program in the country, run by a smiling sage who has forgotten more about the game than most of his peers will ever know.

Amazon.com Review
The Sweet Season is an aptly titled, vibrantly entertaining book. After a decade of fall travel covering games, longtime Sports Illustrated football reporter Austin Murphy forgoes the roadie lifestyle to move with his family and cover one of the best football programs in the nation, at Minnesota's St. John's University. With all the self-deprecating and witty style of Bill Bryson, Murphy depicts the coaches, players, monks (it is, after all, a Catholic school), his family, and himself as fallible humans and unsung heroes.

Above all, Murphy has fun here, in his silly depictions of small-town, college life, the simple delights his family brings, and the refreshment of football without superhuman egos. John Gagliardi, the 70-plus coach of St. John's, has won more games than any five active NFL coaches combined, despite a non-traditional coaching style devoid of full-contact scrimmages or hours of (useless) calisthenics. One Johnny exercise is the Beautiful Day Drill, where players flop down and stare at the sky, commenting on the loveliness overhead.

Murphy's football anecdotes are insightful, his humor relentless, and his game savvy tested. At the first St. John's game, Murphy "[watches] the kickoff transfixed, half-expecting Eau Claire's returner to go all the way. I mean, I've been with the Johnnies damned near a month and haven't seen them make a tackle. Who's to say they can do it?" As we find out, and opposing teams can attest, they hit hard, every season. Highly recommended. --Michael Ferch ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Great Story, Poor Storyteller
As a disclaimer, I'm a St. John's alumni, but as a student football didn't play much role in my college experience. I love St. John's and John Gagliardi and what they both stand for. The story is a good one and touches on some of the great things about the university, the football program, D3 athletics and the monastic community. However, during my reading, I kept wishing that someone other than Austin Murphy had written the book. I'm sure he's a fine writer for SI and a stand-up guy, but his poor grasp of a linear narrative, his edgy shtick, his liberal doses of tangential personal anecdotes detracted significantly from the core of the book.

Ultimately, it took some will to get through it. I really wanted to want to read this book, but had it been about something less personally meaningful, I would have chucked it after 50 pages. In a way, he did a disservice to Gagliardi and the team. The author's sarcasm cheapened the story. His digressions about his drunken, loutish brothers (and their behavior at multiple weddings, none of which featured the St. John's folks) had no ties to the rest of the book. He managed to portray his wife as a singularly unlikeable and unsympathetic character. All of this would have been fine, I suppose, if it had been funny. But it just missed the mark. Especially in contrast to what is really a remarkable program hidden behind the pine trees in central Minnesota. I don't doubt that the author felt genuine love for the St. John's team and the people he met during his sabbatical, I just wish he could have written a book that truly honored them, rather that showcasing his dubious writing style. A disappointment.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Sports story for the non-athlete!
This wonderful, entertainingly written account of a Sports Illustrated writer's sabbatical at the religiously-based St. John's University will surprise and delight you (as, I think, the experience did him).

5-0 out of 5 stars Football and Life
I really enjoyed this book that is about a football season, but also about so much more, including marriage, raising children, coaching and the personalities at this small school in Minnesota. While we often think of Lombardi and Bear Bryant school of hard-driving coaching, it turns out the softer style of coach Gags can also be successful. This book reminded a lot of First and Last Seasons: A Father, A Son, and Sunday Afternoon Football, another book about football but also a lot more.

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved this book and I don't watch football!
I read this book after reading Mr. Murphy's "How Tough Could It B?" and loving it.Although I'm not much for football I thought I'd give this book a try because I enjoyed his writing. It was terrific - a great commentary on St. John's and its coach as well as another look at Mr. Murphy's refreshingly real family (well, perhaps they are not real but they sure are like my husband and children).I'm waiting for another book please!

4-0 out of 5 stars No pictures or stats
Lack of pictures and statistics of Gagliardi's 50 years in coaching cause this book to come up just short of 5 stars. Also, I expected the author to provide a few more "game details".I actually found the epilogue, where St. Johns makes it to the Divison III championship game the following season, more exciting than the body of the book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Evidence for Young Creationists
John Morris and Steven A. Austin offer evidence for a young earth from the powerful explosion of Mount St. Helens (May 18, 1980). The MSH eruption produced streams of mud, massive covering from ash, much of life extinguished, and unforeseen geographical evidence including volcanic data that lead the writers to a Young Creationists viewpoint (ICR, AIG).

The writers in an easy-to-understand style reveal:

- The geographic volcanic cataclysm that "recreated the process" which helped form the astonishing wonder of the Grand Canyon.
- The volcanic process resulted in widespread death that later left the ingredients for new life to sprout up
- Rapid formation of geographic strata, tree deposits (pre-petrified), and spectacular land features

If you haven't read any young creationists works, if are a skeptic searching for unpopular positions, or if you like to read fascinating religious perspective, then pick up "Footprints in the Ash."

A DVD that compliments the book was produced by Austin: "Mount St. Helens: Explosive Evidence for Catastrophe."

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Aftermath to Mt. St. Helens Eruptions

Geologists make Amazing observations in the aftermath of eruption!! The authors do a great job here, clearly & carefully presenting the results of catastrophic events upsetting many long held geological beliefs. The hard evidences are there to be seen before our eyes!! This book is readable by everyday folks, as well as providing "meat" for the professional. Steve Austin is currently on my Hit Parade of geologists & authors. The book itself has an attractive format & is very well made. I'm really glad I spent the money on it.

For anyone interested in Geology / Earth Science -I also recommend histexts & DVD on the Grand Canyon. These are real eye openers on the cutting edge of science.

The DVD you will be wanting along with this book is entitled: "Mt. St. Helens : Explosive Evidence For Catastrophe". Invite some friends over & break out the popcorn.

1-0 out of 5 stars This Book Is Not Serious Science In The Accepted Sense.
THIS IS NOT A SCIENTIFIC BOOK! We want to provide a clear warning to people of a serious scientific bent -- this book is "Creation Science," not a scientific work in the accepted sense. We do not happen to accept "Creation Science" as scientific. We bought this book assuming it was based on what we consider to be actual science without very carefully reading the other reviews, but in our own defense only one review even uses the word "Christian," which might have been the tip-off. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN SERIOUS SCIENCE, DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. If, on the other hand, you sincerely believe in a literal interpretation of the Bible and that the world was created by God at 9 AM on October 3 in 4004 BC, this book is for you.

We have nothing against religion, any religion, or Christianity, or even so-called "Creation Science" (except insofar as we do not personally accept "Creationism" as any sort of "science" whatsoever), but we do have something against mislabeling. The two Ph.D.s who co-wrote the book are identified as "Creationist geologists." While they may actually hold their purported degrees, they provide not one single footnote, end note or reference to any sort of scientific documentation, as any real scientist is required to do. The only references provided are Biblical. The pictures are really swell, though. You can buy it for the photographs if you're not into "Creation", um, "Science."

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I was very impressed with this book.In short compass, Morris confronts a number of old-earth arguments with observable facts from the 1980 Mt. St. Helens eruption - hundreds of feet of Grand Canyon type strata deposited in a matter of days; canyons cut deep into bedrock with the release of waters from Spirit Lake; the first stages of possible coal formation begun and could result in coal if Spirit Lake were covered by lava from a new explosion. And we Christians have to be the ones to apologize for faith in creationism and catastrophism (Great Flood) when the observable facts are on our side??I also thought the photography, design, and quality of the book were excellent.A very beautiful and thought-provoking book.

5-0 out of 5 stars New geological thought
I was at a museum and saw a display that talked about how the Mount St. Helens eruption and after-effects had many interesting and surprising results, showing how such dramatic events can result in geological structures than many would think would take millions of years to form.I was interested in learning more about this, and this book delivered. The book has many great color photos and diagrams and is careful about precise science (it's written by two Ph.D.s) while clearly defining terms so that the lay reader can easily follow. ...
