Product Description
WWII Radio Heroes: Letters of Compassion is a story about strangers helping each other during a time of war. The book features more than 30 letters and postcards sent to the author’s family in 1943, alerting them of her grandfather’s capture and status as a prisoner of war.The letter writers learned of her grandfather's capture via short wave radio as they tuned in to Berlin, Germany. Upon discovering these letters, the author began researching the people who did this, and why, and reached out to find them or their next of kin, more than 60 years after the fact. Her journey is detailed in WWII Radio Heroes. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Boring
After the first third of the book, it became repetitive. I am glad people relayed the messages, but there is no story line to the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars WWII Radio Heroes
Lisa's book seems to be unconsciously all about the hidden.Hidden history, hidden family, and therefore hidden self. It's an almost imperceptible warning of the dangers of forgetting and the history that is lost when there is no one left to utter our names. Some cultures believe that a person is only truly dead and gone when there is no one left that remembers their name.Lisa ensures the legacies of her grandfather, the letter writers, and herself through her book, cementing history through the written word, much like the letter writers in the book did.The compassion of the letter writers and the compassion in Lisa's writing makes us realize that we can choose compassion. It is not only an inherited trait or explained through scientific definitions, but compassion can be the simple taking of pen to paper, the couple of undistracted minutes it takes to connect with another human being.Lisa tells a love story, the love of human beings trying to make their ways through an often terrifying world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spahr's book warms the heart
In an age when letter-writing is going the way of the dinosaurs, Spahr's book is a poingnant reminder of inherent power of letters. Would these letters have been as significant, the sacrifice in writing them as high, if they had been emails? Probably not.

The book also does a good job of bringing the story to life. I can imagine the impact these letters had on her great-grandmother from seeing pictures of the actual letters. The letters bring a mix of history and heart to the pages of the book.

It is also interesting to learn new things about WWII. There are so many horrible stories that came out of that era - it is nice to read one about human kindness for a change. Sometimes the worst of times bring out the best in people. And I think that's what this book is really about - the best in people. These radio listeners used their own time, energy and money to reach out to a complete stranger and give them comfort. How many of us would do that today? These heroes from the past have inspired me to not only be a better person but to write letters again.

5-0 out of 5 stars W.W. I I COMMUNICATIONS HISTORIAN
IT WAS A JOY AND GREAT PLEASURE TO LOCATE AND READ LISA SPAHR's BOOK.I HAVE READ HUNDREDS OF LETTERS FROM PEOPLE IN W.W.I I.UNFORTUNATELY BECAUSE OF TIME AND RELOCATIONS MANY HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF LETTERS ARE GONE.MANY OF MY FRIENDS SERVED IN THE U.S.ARMY,ARMY SIGNAL CORPS,U.S.NAVY AND MARINES AND ARMY AIR FORCE DURING W.W.I I. THE BOOK IS A RARE NUGGET AND I GIVE LISA SPAHR VERY HIGH MARKS AND HER ASSOCIATE FOR GETTING IT PRINTED. I BELIEVE IT CAN BE MADE INTO A MOVIE EITHER SCRIPTED AS IS OR A STORY COULD BE MADE AROUND IT STILL KEEPING IT'S CORE MESSAGE OF "LETTERS OF COMPASSION". IN CLOSING HAVING EXAMINED THE LETTER COPIES I WANT TO NAIL THIS DOWN FIVE [ 5 ] STARS. BEST WISHES,CHIEF OPERATOR W.W.I I STATION CALLSIGN W1ACB BOSTON,MASSACHUSETTS, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

3-0 out of 5 stars Kindle edition comments
Let me separate my comments into two categories:what is written and how the book appears in the Kindle edition.

THE WHAT.Radio Heroes is a one-of-a-kind compilation of radio relay stories linking captured American prisoners to their families at home.I am both amateur radio operator and student of World War II history. As a "ham," I've made many radio relays myself.I know first-hand what it's like to pass along good news from some remote corner of the world to anxious family members.Remember - this was before cell phones, satellite communications, and email.Ms. Spahr's writing is unsophisticated, but I think that style is appropriate. The author could have gotten in the way of the stories, but like the radio, she is the medium, not the message. The idea, the research, the assembly - all well done.My only criticism is the lack of technical information.

THE HOW.Unfortunately, the Kindle edition is poorly done.(I have the Kindle 2.)I don't know much about the conversion process, but the breakdown had to have occurred with Amazon or the publisher or both, but it is not a short-coming of the author. The problems are in the formatting and the images - the words are there, but they often are fragmented, compacted together when spaces are dropped, and, in some cases, missing. Many images appear simply as grey rectangles - no photograph or image scan - just ghostly grey.Other images have something there, but even with magnification, it is impossible to make out content.

BOTTOM LINE.Print edition 4 stars (based on the story) :: Kindle edition 2 stars :: Average 3 stars. ... Read more

PREFACE
Every generation demands that history shall be rewritten. This is not alone because it requires that the work should be adapted to its own point of view, but because it is instinctively seeking those lines which connect the problems and lessons of the past with its own questions and circumstances. If it were not for the existence of lines of this kind, history might be entertaining, but would have little real value. The more numerous they are between the present and any earlier period, the more valuable is, for us, the history of that period. Such considerations establish an especial interest just at present in the life of Gallatin.

The Monroe Doctrine has recently been the pivot of American statesmanship. With that doctrine Mr. Gallatin had much to do, both as minister to France and envoy to Great Britain. Indeed, in 1818, some years before the declaration of that doctrine, when the Spanish colonies of South America were in revolt, he declared that the United States would not even aid France in a mediation. Later, in May, 1823, six months before the famous message of President Monroe, Mr. Gallatin had already uttered its idea; when about leaving Paris, on his return from the French mission, he said to Chateaubriand, the French minister of foreign affairs (May 13, 1823): “The United States would undoubtedly preserve their neutrality, provided it were respected, and avoid any interference with the politics of Europe.... On the other hand, they would not suffer others to interfere against the emancipation of America.” With characteristic vanity Canning said that it was he himself who “called the new world into existence to redress the balance of the old.” Yet precisely this had already for a long while been a cardinal point of the policy of the United States. So early as 1808, Jefferson, alluding to the disturbed condition of the Spanish colonies, said: “We consider their interest and ours as the same, and that the object of both must be to exclude all European influence in this hemisphere.” ... ... Product Description
Two in the Bush is the true account of a young Indiana couplewho, in 1946, built and lived in the remote wilderness in the northern part of theProvince of Ontario. John and Ruth Moore were both children of businessmen and hadalways lived in cities. With the help of an architect, John designed the house whichfeatured passive solar and wood heat. John, John's father and Ruth enlisted theoccasional assistance of friends and hired teenagers. Together they moved 40 tons ofbuilding materials from the station at the railroad hamlet of Missanabie to nearby DogLake, into boats and down the lake to the site they had chosen for their home. The threeof them dug the hole, laid the foundation, cut every board and drove every nail. Johndid all the wiring and plumbing.

The Moores ended up with a housewith pressurized hot water and a seven foot, 180 degree bay window. The solar and woodheat kept them comfortable all during the winters when temperatures could drop to as lowas minus 50 degrees Fahrenheit. All the other residents of the area lived in dark cabinswith hand pumps, kerosene lanterns and out-houses.

The familylived on Dog Lake for three years and seven additional summers. Much of their food camefrom a large vegetable garden and fish they caught in the lake. Three children camealong and they grew strong in the lakeside wilderness.

Mail wasreceived only when they went to Missanabie, the closest town – once a week insummer and far less frequently in winter. They had no telephone and, other than mail, their only contact with the outside world was commercial radio. The railroad was thetransportation and communication link with the rest of Ontario. The Moores were oftengiven rides by railway employees on both freight trains and hand cars. Neighbors werefar away and some were only there in the summers. Ruth spent six months one winterwithout seeing another human being besides John and their infant.

At times forest fires threatened, a bear claimed their garbage dump and a thief stolefood that was being saved for a special occasion. Boy Scouts dropped in after dark oneday with no idea where they would spend the night. Weather changes threatened boaterswho couldn't make it home safely. ... Read more

LONG LIVE THE LONGHORNS covers the first 100 years of University of Texas football from 1893-1993. It is a fairly thorough history of the sport in Austin with many interesting anecdotes and photographs. It scarcely seemed possible. And yet--Bradshaw was generally right. If he said he had a scheme for doing--though it was generally for not doing--something, it rarely failed to come off. I thought of my sixpence, my only sixpence, and felt a distinct pang of remorse. After all, only the other day the chaplain had said how wrong it was to bet. By Jove, so he had. Decent man the chaplain. Pity to do anything he would disapprove of. I was on the point of recalling my wager, when before my mind's eye rose a vision of Bradshaw rampant and sneering, and myself writhing in my chair a crushed and scored-off wreck. I drew the line at that. I valued my self-respect at more than sixpence. If it had been a shilling now. And much more Wodehouse...Enjoy!

Product Description
In her first published novel, Sense and Sensibility, Jane Austen presents us with the subtle portraits of two contrasting but equally compelling heroines. For sensible Elinor Dashwood and her impetuous younger sister Marianne the prospect of marrying the men they love appears remote. In a world ruled by money and self-interest, the Dashwood sisters have neither fortune nor connections.
