Product Description
Whenever John, Paul, or George went on a trip, they would send Ringo a postcard. Now, for the first time, Ringo Starr is opening his private archive to share this delightful and very intimate correspondence. Whether it's John advising Ringo to record a "great & simple" song like Blondie's Heart of Glass, Paul and Jane Asher dropping a note from Rishikesh to report on their meditation lessons with the Maharishi, or George writing from the Great Barrier Reef to confirm plans for Christmas dinner, each postcard is a warm and personal snapshot of life in (and after) The Beatles. The 51 postcards -- many of which are covered in whimsical drawings -- are colorfully reproduced, both front and back. Ringo's droll commentary fills in the blanks, though he does confess that at times he had to consult the Internet for details! Often funny, occasionally bittersweet, and always revealing, Postcards from the Boys is a must for Beatles lovers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful trivia
Any Beatles fan would love this collection.Postcards written to Ringo while the rest of the Band was off vacationing.Sincerely written thoughts. A must have for collectors.

3-0 out of 5 stars intimate
it helps you think of the Beatles like common people, friends who send a postcard with a funny remark or news, just like any of us

4-0 out of 5 stars a fun novelty
This is a book of postcards that Ringo received from the other three Beatles. Ringo's commentary tells what was going on at the time of each postcard and reveals some of his feelings about the boys. The choice of cards range from funny to perplexing, from beautiful to ordinary. Paul's drawings and word art make his mail the most entertaining, but John's messages are puzzling and often poetic. One of the loveliest pictures is a photo postcard taken in Hawaii of George and Olivia's shadows.

Changes in the girlfriends and wives can be seen in this visual chronology, with postcards to Ringo and "Mo" (Maureen) then later to Ringo and Barbara Bach. John's mail is initially from "John, Cyn (Cynthia), and Julian," and later from "John, Yoko, Julian, and Kyoko," until eventually just addressed as "J & Y." Paul's poscards change from Paul and Jane (Asher) to Paul, Lin (Linda), and kids. There are no postcards from George and Pattie, but George's mail picks up when he and Olivia become a couple.

The best part of the book by far is the postcard in which Paul says Ringo is "the greatest drummer in the world." George and John sent telegrams begging Ringo to come back after he briefly quit the band during the recording of the White Album. Ringo says that Paul's postcard, however, is a bit late...one year after the fact!

5-0 out of 5 stars Postcards from The Boys
A very interesting side to The Beatles! If you know a little bit about the Beatles history, you would understand what certain comments were about on the back of the postcards.Makes a nice gift for The Beatles fan who also collects.

1-0 out of 5 stars MY EYES.........MY BRAIN..............THEY HURT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Reading this was like running down to the cellar to change a fuse in your bare feet during a thunder and lightening storm, with the floor covered in broken glass and thumbtacks.

If you buy this book, buy a dictionary along with it. This author took a simple and easy read subject and turned it into pain-filled bother. The information, I think, is there. You'll need to crawl up sharp rocks on the hottest day of the year with no water, to get to it though.

1-0 out of 5 stars Author is full of himself
It seems this book was written for the author to show off how many big (and useless) words are in his vocabulary.Although it is filled with some good and valuable information you can't read more than a few pages at a sitting because of the writing style. If you took all of the useless words out the book would be about 75 pages.

2-0 out of 5 stars I Found This A Very Difficult Read
This book was much harder to read than I expected. The author is British and expects that his readers are all British.Unless you have an intimate knowledge of England, its television shows, its local celebrities and its slang, it is easy to get lost.As an American, I found myself unable to follow a good deal of the book.I understood enough to get the gist, but feel I missed an awful lot of the information because it may as well have been written in a foreign language.

4-0 out of 5 stars IT DON'T COME EASY
As an inveterate Beatles fan, I was naturally drawn to this book.Clayson does an admirable job of following Ringo from his early days in the rough Dingle section of Liverpool to his years as a Beatle and beyond.

Clayson's use of quoted interviews with people who knew and worked with Ringo is what makes this book so effective.I like the way he portrays Ringo as approachable, as somewhat humble about his stellar success as one quarter of the world's number one band. This is definitely worth reading.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is the one,for now.
Its like this, until there is a better book on Ringo, (the most well known Drummer in the 1960s, and probably R&R) this is the one.And Clayson does it with lots of quotes from Ringo and people who worked with him and knew him. Because Ringo really doesnt want a book written about him, with him getting totaly involved that is. So, if someone wants to write a book about him, I guess he says, "Go ahead, But no interviews" So some of it is Clayson's research, and lot's of quotes as I mentioned. You will learn about Ringo, you'll see a side of him that you may have never read. Is it a great book? not in the true sense, "great", is it a pretty good book? yes. Why not great? well, one reason, because there's no pictures. It makes up for that with things I never knew or heard in other Beatle books. This book is actually more like 3-4 stars, but it does get your attention at times, so I gave it 4. Is this all about the Beatles and Beatlemania? yes and no, its mainly about Ringo. That is after all what your looking for, and you hear his side of the Beatles through quotes, and quotes from some other people, too numerous to mention, put it this way, lots and lots of people. e.g. His ex-wife, other drummers sometimes, George Martin, the other Beatles of course, and many more.Sometimes the book drifts, but not too far. He talks about Pete Best, and Jimmy Nicol, but not too much, just enough probably. And mentions some things about them that you may not have heard. In this book Clayson gives us some quotes picked from various interviews (mainly from 60s-70s) so you can get Ringo's candid opinion's about his Drums, and other Drums, and Ringo's opinion's about a famous drummer or two, Such as Buddy Rich.
Also we find out what Ringo usually did after tours,
opinions about his children, his money, the Beatles, how he drank in the early days, and how he stopped, and much more.Is it a fun book with lists, etc.? sort of, at times, but no lists perse. Does it have some info you probably never knew? (sure you've heard some of it before) yes.The index is pretty good too, most Beatle books need an index.Learn some stuff not read often about The worlds famous Rock Drummer.Buy it and Enjoy. ... Product Description
Replacing Pete Best on drums just as The Beatles were set to record Love Me Do, Ringo Starr became not only the luckiest man in pop music, but also the epitome of the rock and roll lifestyle: fame, fortune, glamorous women, plum film roles, and one-name recognition. After the group's 1970 breakup, only the genial, even-tempered Ringo remained on good terms with all of his feuding ex-mates. But behind the sunglasses and the quips lay another story: a hardscrabble childhood in Liverpool, frequent bouts of poor health, lack of education, and a long battle with alcoholism. Alan Clayson's biography traces Starr's entire life and career, from his early days with Rory Storm and the Hurricanes through the tumultuous Fab Four years and to his wildly successful stint as an actor and solo artist. This biography remains the definitive account of the man who anchored the Mersey Sound. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Be prepared for a bumpy ride
I was looking forward to this book as there are so few on Ringo. I am somewhat disappointed. The aspect I enjoyed was the small amount of information regarding his background that I had not known before, note the word "small."
My greatest concern was the author's style. There is a lot of meandering off on useless self indulgent tangents. This is to the extent that I often lost track of the point being made altogether. What is even more annoying is the way Clayson uses the english language. He writes in wordy self conscious ramblings that seem to be more about his self-satisfied word play than about the information being given. I have over 200 books about The Beatles, this one would only be suggested to someone willing to read a lot to learn a little.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
For whats available on my favorite drummer of all time, this was a great book! I do wish he would do one in his own words, but this book seemed very thorough! It really gives you perspective on the tough life this amazing guy lived! I have so much respect for him, seeing the battle out of a sickly childhood and a tough fight with substance abuse! 4-0 out of 5 stars ringo the great
I bought this hoping there would be some text/narration of Ringo's life, esp. before the Beatles. It is truly an encyclopedia and as such is more of a reference book than something to read.I suppose that the movie "That'll be the Day" in which Ringo essentially plays himself during the period of his life pre-Beatles working at a Butlin's-like holiday camp is the closest we can come to getting a glimpse into the "real" Ringo. Ringo was a greaser-rocker (Like the rest of the beatles) and the movie is almost a mini-bio (it's either "that'll be the day" or "stardust" in which Ringo appears;both available on AMazon or Ebay.)
There is a dearth of material on Ringo, which is really unfair as George Martin has observed on the Beatles Cirque du Soliel "Love" CD/show how Ringo's awesome drumming,(which Phil Collins has said is impossible for another drummer to reproduce eg. "the fills on "A Day in the Life");is the glue that kept the Beatles' sound consistent over the years.
Ringo is the foundation without which The Beatles would not've been as successful. Most pop music fans don't pay much attention to drumming and might not realize how unique and great Ringo was w/ the Beatles.
I hope someday that a good author/researcher comes along and puts out a biography worthy of Ringo Starr. It would be totally WRONG if that never happens, esp. while Ringo's still with us. The Ringo encyclopedia probably deserves 2 0r 3 starrs, but I gave it 4 out of respect for Ringo himself, also for the lack of material on Ringo and because only Charlie Watts can come close to Ringo in the sense of being so closely woven into the overall sound of their respective groups,(ok,maybe Ginger Baker, too.)(Watts and Starr are criminally underrated.)Like a good referee or umpire,a good drummer is doing his job well when nobody notices him. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars "RINGO STARR..." a book for the anglophile or student of rock histor
If you are looking for an easy and quick read full of juicy bits about Ringo and the Beatles, you'll do well to find yourself another book and there are quite a few of them out there as I can attest, having procured many by way of the exchange of my hard earned money for them.If you enjoy reading long convoluted sentences such as the ones I am writing here reminiscent of texts assigned by your professor in college, sentences I would add, flavoured copiously with English character, then grab yourself a copy.Seriously; this book is a must have for students and fans of British pop culture and early rock and roll. But mind the punctuation and keep a good dictionary handy.

1-0 out of 5 stars Could have a laxative effect on some readers
Glad to see that other reviewers share my thoughts on this infuriating "Maze" of a book. By the end of the first page you realize that you've walked into something that's hopelessly tangled and confused. You keep stumbling on in the vain hope that the whole nasty mess will EVENTUALLY "Straighten itself Out" . No such luck. Your persistence DOESN'T pay off. The endless twists and turns only get worse. I bought my copy for [money amount]at a local market. Boy, what a waste of Money!I started to read it late one evening. After a couple of minutes I found myself mumbling such comments as "What the hell is this all About ?". It's like reading a foreign language .... I couldn't "Cotton On" to ANYTHING he was saying. By page 23 I'd had enough . Suitable only for use as a doorstop when those hot North winds start to blow. ...

2-0 out of 5 stars Starr biography fails to twinkle!
There are many books about The Beatles but most of them focus on the accomplishments of the group as a whole or the exploits of Lennon and McCartney, and to a lesser extent, George Harrison. Ringo Starr is usually overshadowed, so a biography on his life should have been a worthy addition to any Beatle fan's bookshelf. Unfortunately, it's not the book it could have been and ultimately disappoints.
Beginning in his teddy boy days in Liverpool and ending with his first "All Starr Band" tour, this biography does have segments to recommend it. In particular, the chapters covering 1970-1990, as Ringo's post-Beatle life has been chronicled less than his days as a mop top. We get some insight into his successes and failures in this period including wayward record deals and about with alcoholism.
Sadly though, Clayson's book fails to get close to his subject in any meaningful way. Ringo wasn't interviewed for it and nor were any direct family or former lovers or any of the other Beatles or Beatle sidekicks or musicians who worked with his after the break up. Clayson relies almost solely on newspaper stories, articles in the music press and other author's books to piece together Ringo's story. Those interviewed for the book are a bunch of no-names who could probably call themselves acquaintances of the man but nothing more. It's obvious that Starr and everyone who is really close to him, decided not to cooperate with the author, so Clayson's book reads like a scrappy research project cluttered with endless footnotes. Because of this, the book lacks depth and we learn little of the man who was once Richard Starkey. Clayson's writing style is also quite awkward because he tries to string together forty to fifty referenced quotes into each chapter, making it read like a university thesis at times. The odd factual tidbits are the only thing that recommend it because other than that, it's a hollow book, lacking both insight or emotion.

2-0 out of 5 stars IT DON'T COME EASY
When I was a little girl, Ringo was my all time favorite Beatle (and I was a major Beatles FAN)!For years I hoped a good, comprehensive biography of the world's most famous drummer would be published, so I naturally expected this book to fit the tab.

Wrong! It is written in a rather pedantic, condescending tone and offers very little in the way of new information.Instead of treating Ringo with respect, the author appears to trivialize the major obstacles Ringo had to overcome to attain the level of success that he did.

Although I was very disappointed by this book, I am glad to see that Ringo is getting more coverage. My suggestion?Skip this.Read the Beatles' "Anthology" instead. You'll be glad you did.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth your time
This book is just hard to read -- period. One would think that a biography on Ringo would be like himself -- fun. Instead, Clayson wrote a book on an interesting subject and made it as much fun to read as the collected works of Milton.Maybe Clayson is embarrassed that a writer of his "caliber" is churning out books on Ringo, instead of writing the great British novel, and wants the reader to suffer along with him.God knows he seems more intent on showing the reader how smart he is, rather than informing and entertaining us.

Clayson also seems focused on Pete Best, who I guess gave him an interview (Ringo would not). Finally, there are many sloppy factual errors in the book. The one error I found most ridiculous was Clayson's saying that there was trumpet on Helter Skelter.A trumpet? Is he sure there wasn't a fiddle and banjo on that one too?

One of the few interesting things about the book is a picture of Ringo as Elton John tries to kiss him.His expression is priceless. ... Read more

Product Description
... 5-0 out of 5 stars Looking for Derek Taylor
...
Hello, my name is Heather, I have become enamored of this man.

Derek Taylor, I mean; his work, his manner, his mantality
(Yes, the spelling is correct.)
And I've never met him before.
And I never will. *grin*
But that's not the point, is it? The point is
to enjoy people like this, wherever they
can be found---And you?

And I post this on Valentines' Day. *laugh* Which I do not
believe in. I don't think Derek Taylor did either. The idea of
only ONE day of love expressed...

is abhorent. *grin*

Here, we have, exhibit A: a guy who influenced the Beatles, hung
with them, helped with them, and I find nothing, when I come
looking for him.

Well, guess what? This book rocks. And the prose, and the people
Derek talked about--people, yes, so many people--and the
insights, are as swift and as bright and as deep as a new
thought, in the dark.

Who'd've thought I'd go looking, for the first time, in my life, for the Beatles, and find this guy.

Amazing. You should read him.
As he sure as hell read
all of YOU *grin*

Find this book. Get this man's work seen.

I thank you.

Meanwhile, read this piece, that I wrote, after searching for Derek. You may just like it.

+++

Billions and billions of Beatle pictures. You can't see the fawking ROAD for Beatles pictures. Every once in a while though I'd find Derek. Hiding on a page. Standing so close, so intent, so integral to the mood, you almost wondered why you hadn't seen him more often in all those BLOODY photos. Needless to say, he (and others like him) had been cropped from view. We're here to see the Beatleboys, not the Beatleaides, not the Beatlekeepers, not the Beatle people so essential to the smooth-running operation that most fans didn't even know who the hell they were.

Only that they often stood as a roadblock, a deterrent, a buffer to Beatle-baked people who clamoured for yet another BLOODY photo, yet another autograph, yet another insightful interview, yet another money-making endorsement, yet another banal or boring conversation with their Beatle boygods.

Meanwhile, people like Derek Taylor provided an attempt at clarity, a soothing song in the ever-widening gyre of madness that hurricaned about them; a smoke-festooned-and-Scotch-laced Alka Seltzer to the moptop FabFour sanity and sense of self.

It wasn't just Derek. Without Brian Epstein, Peter Brown, Mal Evans, Neil Aspinall or even George Martin, I don't think the Beatles would have existed.

Oh, they'd be out there somewhere, playing in a dingy Cavernlike club. But I don't believe they would have reached the almost mythic proportions of pop/rock stardom they enjoyed (even to this day) without the incredibly devoted, rational and skilled people backing them up, holding their drunken heads or taking a punch for the Beatle benefit. Less insightful folks might feel otherwise, but if you look close, REAL close, you can see a pattern in the chain of command that surrounded these lovely lads from Liverpool.

And standing close by, cigarette barely dangling from his lips, his expression so dark, so unaffected was Derek. Derek's dark eyes always watching, watching. Exuding calm. (Whether he felt calm or not.) To be found in a photo. More than just a confidante; more than just a majordomo; more than just a father-figure to four cheeky chappies from a small seaport in the British Isles, Derek was their friend. He carried insights into each and every Beatle boy that shown through every press release he ever composed. He'd be on hand for all the cheer and all the paranoid doomsaying. Following George out a flashbulbed front door; standing protectively within shielding distance of any one Beatle that was about; striding through an airport walkway, like a military sergeant in a dark sharp-shouldered Savile row suit, offsetting Paul and John's white ones; leaning against an Apple-rotting rooftop wall, dressed in a caramel-coloured car coat, listening in a reverie to one last let-it-be concert from those Beatle boys he so adored; uncropped from a classic Beatle photo (There is a photo of Paul and his then girlfriend Jane Asher, returning from holiday in the Virgin Islands. I found a photo where Derek is walking along right beside Jane. Ha!)...there he is. Derek Taylor.

You should know this man. And be inspired by his words. As I am.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome.Just awesome.
An indispensible reference for those Beatleologists who tend to think their artistry didn't end with their breakup. As stated in a previous review, it's very well written, engaging, and oh yes, thorough.

If you're looking for a basic discography, then I suggest looking elsewhere. But if you need details on every possible recording made by the ex-Fabs during the remainder of the 20th Century, then this is the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEATLES BOOK MADE IN HEAVEN
ONE WORD AND ONE WORD ONLY, THIS BOOK IS AWESOME
(WELL THAT WAS 10 WORDS), BUT HEH IT REALLY IS AWESOME

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best of Its Kind
I was practically inseperable with this book for weeks after I first got it.Well-written and exhaustively in-depth look at every aspect of the four ex-Beatles solo careers. This has all the info you could ever want on solo albums, tours, TV appearances, bootlegs, etc.The only drawback is that I got so into it I was forced to buy all the solo records I hadn't already owned! ... Excerpt: The University of Toledo is a public university in Toledo, Ohio. The Carnegie Foundation classified the university as "Doctoral/Research Extensive." During its history, the University of Toledo has received several national accolades. The universitys programs, faculty and facilities have been highlighted in the media, including The Wall Street Journal, Consumer Reports, The New York Times, The Plain Dealer, Newsweek, CNN, C-SPAN, NPR and The Today Show. The Princeton Review ranked the graduate school of engineering as the 18th best in the country. The Occupational Therapy program is ranked in the Top Ten Percent in the country. The University recently merged with The Medical University of Ohio (formerly The Medical College of Ohio) making it the third largest university in Ohio in terms of operating budget. This merger also makes the University only one of 17 public institutions in the country with a school of medicine, law, business, education, pharmacy, and engineering (ut website). The medical school includes professors who are internationally recognized in their fields. The University of Toledo College of Medicine senior graduates "matched" at a higher rate than those of other seniors nationwide for the second year in a row; a record 97 percent secured first-year residency positions during the initial National Residency Matching Program (ut website). The University of Toledo College of Medicine also boasts the highest United States Medical Licensing Exam Step 1 score by a medical student in the country (270) in 2006 (toledoblade7/06). The University of Toledo Medical Center is one of 15 major teaching hospitals chosen by Solucient's annual "Top 100 Hospitals: Performance Improvement Lea...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=516636 ... Excerpt: David Bowie (pronounced , ; born David Robert Jones, 8 January 1947) is an English musician, actor, record producer and arranger. Active in five decades of popular music and frequently reinventing his music and image, Bowie is widely regarded as an innovator, particularly for his work in the 1970s. He has been cited as an influence by many musicians and is known for his distinctive voice and the intellectual depth of his work. Although he released an album (David Bowie) and several singles earlier, David Bowie first caught the eye and ear of the public in the autumn of 1969, when the song "Space Oddity" reached the top five of the UK Singles Chart. After a three-year period of experimentation he re-emerged in 1972 during the glam rock era as the flamboyant, androgynous alter ego Ziggy Stardust, spearheaded by the hit single "Starman" and the album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. The relatively short-lived Ziggy persona epitomised a career often marked by musical innovation, reinvention and striking visual presentation. In 1975, Bowie achieved his first major American crossover success with the number-one single "Fame", co-written with John Lennon, and the hit album Young Americans, which the singer identified as "plastic soul". The sound constituted a radical shift in style that initially alienated many of his UK devotees. He then confounded the expectations of both his record label and his American audiences by recording the mini...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=8786 ... Read more
