2-0 out of 5 stars Warning - not a coherent new book
This is a compendium of chapters taken from several (generally excellent) books. Each chapter is good in itself, but they do not tell a coherent story about the topic of database design. For example, the notation used varies considerably from chapter to chapter. You would do better to buy a book written as a unity. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars clumsy read
Wow, did I ever struggle with this eBook.I have read classics before and I will continue to do so but I felt this freebie done by volunteers, who I thank for taking time to do so, was clumsy and ponderous.I really slogged through page upon page of this book trying to piece together what this author was trying to capture as the time of royalty, waste and privilege in Russia at the expense of the working class but I failed...miserably so.Please invest in the proper translation of this classic, at best this book in it's proper is an investment in time and thought without the added burden of a rough and untrained translation.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the three best novels of all time (imho)
A magnificent book, where magnificent characters love and die within an even more magnificent structure-- which you won't see if you are not a writer. So if you want to glimpse the scaffolding of this masterpiece, read Nabokov's "Lectures on Russian Literature" for some analysis of genius in the relevant chapter. For example, the eight pairings as they advance through time, almost in order, and other such literary girders. You may not think it's important, but please see it for yourself first before repeating this inanity. Nabokov himself was also a master of structure, of course, but he often used it for fun-- such as hiding riddles inside his books, and other such games-- whereas Gospodin Tolstoy's only indulgence here is the occasional preachings by Liovin about Christianity. But both should be allowed their fun. Tolstoy had his Christian ramblings, Nabokov his cryptograms.
At any rate, I am not worthy to comment further on AK. Even though she committed suicide, she'll live forever, as will her creator-- and her non-Freudian analyst, VN.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bad Romance
"Anna Karenina" is Leo Tolstoy's masterwork. "War and Peace" comes in as second best--but it reads more like a Russian soap opera without baby switching and amnesia. "Anna Karenina" is a richly realized quintet of characters- Anna Karenina, unhappily married, her dull emotionless husband Alexei, her passionate young lover Vronsky, the reflective Levin, and his young bride Kitty. While "War and Peace" reflects the majesty and pageantry of the Napoleonic era, "Anna Karenina" was contemporary;it fits the rhythms of everyday life. No wonder it even inspired Anna Karenina (1948) with the former Scarlett O'Hara as the lead. Dostoevsky deemed "Anna Karenina" his favorite of Tolstoy's works. It managed to make Oprah's list.

"Anna Karenina" is an emotionally powerful work. Anna suffers not so much for her adultery (Alexei condones it),but for being inappropriate. Levin happily welcomes his newborn son, yet is constantly tempted to suicide. Leo Tolstoy put himself in his characters-he could be cold like Alexei to his wife, and Levin's feelings for Kitty are conflicted. An interesting sidenote is that BOTH Alexei and Levin are old enough to be the fathers of their wives. Levin's first fond feelings for Kitty were when she was in the cradle (and he was a teen),so there is a strangeness when she herself gives birth to HIS child.

The Maude translation is superb. The essays at the end are worth reading. There is a debate contrasting "Anna Karenina" with DH Lawrence's Lady Chatterley's Lover: Cambridge Lawrence Edition (Classic, 20th-Century, Penguin) (an equally stimulating one could involve Gustave Flaubert's Madame Bovary (Penguin Classics)) Matthew Arnold sees the novel in terms of life instead of literature. George Steiner analyzes the beginning and ending of the work, while MS Gromeka analyzes the epigraph. Donna Tussing Owen links Tolstoy with Arthur Schopenhauer (The World As Will and Representation, In Two Volumes: Vol. I) There is even an essay about Russian views on guilt by Fyodor Dostoevsky himself.

"Anna Karenina" is one of the most HUMAN of Tolstoy's works. Read it, experience it, discuss it, share it. It is timeless! It is about a bad, a bad romance.... and universal themes.

5-0 out of 5 stars wow I definitely learned stuff
My friend convinced me to read this book by saying, "I never ask anyone for advice about a situation, because all you need to do to know how someone will react to some situation is to read the classics, like Tolstoy. Then you realize that everything that can happen to people has already happened, every conversation has already happened," and, presumably, that Tolstoy has analyzed, understood, and written about it.

Some reasons why this book is very good:

1) Tolstoy is an amazing writer who builds a complete world. Even through the translation you can tell he's a master of the craft- he somehow effortlessly juggles a hundred characters and all their subplots without making you confused or bored. He does it all so seamlessly and perfectly that I can't imagine how he organized and imagined everything to write it down so completely and beautifully. At the end you're kind of breathless that you somehow absorbed this whole complicated universe of European society, that a single, coherent, cohesive book can contain such a rich world without exploding.

2) Tolstoy gets people. This book taught me so much about human nature. It's amazing to read a writer who can describe a person's most conflicted thoughts and emotions in an original, interesting, well written way while revealing some intelligent, appreciative, instantly relate-able insight on how people work. When Anna is sneaking off to visit her son for the first time in years, and Tolstoy describes her anguish and hope, and the child's emotions of missing his mother so much but of not understanding the situation, you remember old emotions: what it was like to be a child and be convinced you'd see your mother today and be looking for her in the park, what it meant to love your mother. And even though you've never had a child you needed to sneak off to meet at your husband's house because you're living in sin with your lover, you feel Anna's torment and yearning. When Tolstoy describes to you how a woman makes a decision to leave her husband, or when a friendship falls apart, you instantly recognize those feelings in yourself. It's not just the big scenes where Tolstoy brings his deep knowledge of human emotion into play; it's also in the little things, his offhand narrative remarks on how people behave in awkward situations. And he occasionally brings in the servants and reminds you of all these other people who revolve around, always present but somehow hidden.

I tried reading this book in high school and didn't get into it. Now I'm glad my friend told me to give it another chance. I think part of why I didn't like it in high school is:
1) the translation was bad. I liked this translation but I didn't try a lot of different ones. If you can't get into this book maybe try another translation because it makes a big difference.
2) In high school I was too immature about people and life (even though I felt totally wise) to appreciate how good this is. I'm actually really surprised and happy that I now like what I at one point disliked because it suggests I've matured, or something.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I've read
Anna Karenina is the first Tolstoy book I've read and I fell in love with his style of writing and the characters he created.Yes, if you are accustomed to reading 200 page brain-candy modern novels, this seems very long and complicated, but in my opinion, THIS is what novels should be like! There are so many interesting ideas and concepts, and so many different types of people that the books jumps around and moves forward in a way that makes you care what happens to each person.I was actually sad when the novel ended.I thought that this translation was good, but I haven't read any other translations, so I can't compare. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A regular hit with 7 y/o
Kiddo can't get enough of this exciting set of stories, and draws pictures illustrating them. He has done this for no other recording, and I take it as high praise.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quality edition for Reader's Digest
I've heard that many book collectors (as a relative term - I collect books but not "collectible" editions) don't like Reader's Digest editions, mostly because they are a dime-a-dozen. But this edition of Arabian Nights is BEAUTIFUL! It's far better than many other editions I've seen, especially young reader paperbacks that visually seem to dumb-down the content.

I know book structure because I build them by hand. The outside has coated bookcloth, a leather spine with gold foil stamping, and screen-printed graphics with embossed foil. Inside pages are text-weight acid-free paper (which means the pages could last for centuries without crumbling - cheaper paperback editions may use newsprint or acidic paper that causes the pages to yellow and turn brittle quickly). The quality paper produces crisp type and sharp, bright images: eighteen color plates and thirteen black plates enhance the groups of short stories.

I recommend this edition as a keeper to read for years to come and to pass down to other new readers who haven't discovered these delightful tales yet. I hope you are lucky enough to also get the one page folded insert that was originally sold with this book that gives a content overview plus information on the author and illustrators.

3-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat mellow after all the expectations.
I expected this to be a great read after all the hype I have heard of this book.Alas it was not so, so maybe Childers will haunt me after this review. This book, like much of the narrative has me sailing in circles.I got some nautical terms out of this reading but not much else. The plot is the German Imperial Army planning the conquest of England. They expand their tranportation system in the land nearest the UK and build train stations and barges as a means to transport their soldiers.

This story is perhaps more believeable than a James Bond movie. However, the narrative at page 200, is much like that at the beginning. This is an OK read for spy buffs, and those interested in WWI.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cracking good read
I was first given this book as a present from my English teacher when I was 13. Now I'm 23 and I only just read it.

Overall I think it was a great read. The plot wasn't so great, a little too slow and it petered out towards the end. What was great was the sense of adventure. Of stripping away from the office and running into the unknown. Childers' character descriptions were also top notch - painting subtle yet rich articulation into the storyline.

The descriptions of sailing weren't overly technical, they were rich and atmospheric.

4-0 out of 5 stars Spies, Sailboats and Sand
For lovers of spy/espionage thrillers this is a great read.Childers, despite his slow(70 page) start maintains a high level of informative tension to almost the end.Who are the villains and who are the heroes and who can be trusted? The purpose of the the author,as was John Buchan's 'Thirty-Nine Steps' which was made into a fine Hitchcock film, was to warn the pre-World War I British establishment of the dangerous intentions of Imperial Germany and to awaken Britain from its complacent slumber. The evolution of the central character from snobbish dandy to a sea-toughened spy is skillfully drawn. To get the most from your reading, bring along your own maps of the North Sea/Friesan Islands,Baltic Sea region.

2-0 out of 5 stars Frustration leading to skimming
Childers' novel was a real disappointment. After starting to read the original Ian Fleming James Bond novels for Fleming's centennial, my interest in spy novels was piqued and I decided to make a survey of them.I was going to start with The 39 Steps until I came across The Riddle of the Sands.I wasn't expecting a Bond-style thriller, and I came with an open mind, but this was a tedious and underwhelming story with little general historical interest.

Originally published in 1903, the story is a first-person account of a pre-WWI British Foreign Office employee who gets caught up in the discovery of German invasion plans while on a sailing holiday. The book was written as a serious account of events for the expressed purpose of jarring the public into recognition of the German threat.

While the plot sounds like a decent one for a spy novel, and while the reader with an interest in historical fiction might expect to find period interest, most of the book is detailed accounts of sailing, complete with nautical terms and descriptions with little meaning to those not familiar with boats and navigation.I figure the book could easily have been cut down to a half of its length without losing any plot or meaningful descriptive material.

There's not much else to say.The evil villain turns out to be a double agent working for the British, which all but the dimmest reader will suspect from the introduction of his character.Whenever danger seems around the corner, it turns out to be nothing. There is no descriptive material that would be of interest to the antiquarian or historical enthusiast. One reviewer who said "it gives remarkable insights into the culture and attitudes of the period" must have been reading a different book.

I'm not sure who this novel would appeal to, and I suspect that it was chosen as an Oxford classic because the novelist died for the politically correct cause of supporting Irish independence.Yawn.

The best thing about the novel is this edition (Oxford Classics green cover with white portrait), and the introduction by David Trotter provides a nice background on early thrillers and spy stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book, wonderful piece of literature ...
This is a truly beautiful book ... Although it is said to be the first book in the genre, it is not alike to most of the spy novels I read. The plot develops slowly, and for the most part of the story nothing significant happens, but this is exactly what makes it special and valuable. Heroes are very human, they are prone to fantasies and mistakes, and for a long time it is not clear if the spy plot was a reality or the creation of their vivid imagination. There is a scene I particularly enjoyed, and if it were not written at the very beginning of the century, it might have been a satire of modern spy novels. Here I refer to the scene when one of the main characters is eavesdropping under the window of a house, but cannot hear much because the curtains are drawn! This is a jewel. I also enjoyed descriptions of sailing in the sands and of the life on the islands.

Read this book if you are interested in the study of human character, do not read it if you are just after thrill and entertainment, you won't find what you are looking for then. This book requires time. ... Read more

Virgil's Aeneid, one of the greatest Classical poems, tells the story of Aeneas, son of Priam, after the fall of Troy. His quest is to find the site "in the west" where he will found a new town prophesied to be the seat of a world empire - Rome. 5-0 out of 5 stars Latin class comes to life
I studied The Aeneid in 4th year Latin in high school many years ago. I am sure it was never like this or I would remember it more fondly. This telling has a real sense of action and adventure. From ships tossed at sea to battles fought, the tale unfolds with energy and the characters come to life or larger-than-life, as the case may be. The voices of the gods are splendid and distinct; the narration by Paul Scofield quiet but never dull. And Toby Stephens as Aeneas is completely heroic and compelling. When he speaks it is easy to imagine his fellow Trojans' willingness to follow him for seven years and not lose heart. There was much more to the love story between Dido and Aeneas than I remembered from school, too. I guess unmarried intimacy was not for our tender ears. My only complaint is a somewhat abrupt and slightly unsatisfying ending to this excellent rendition of a classic.

3-0 out of 5 stars Translation So-So, CD Could Be Better
This version, translated by C. Day Lewis, is more than passable, but not up to the standard of Robert Fagles. The audio recording also suffers from using an aging Jill Balcon, who for some reason was not only cast for female roles, but the god Mercury. For goddesses such as Venus and Juno, one would expect to hear the voices of 20-year old women, not the craggy voice of an older woman or women. Paul Scofield relentlessly reads the text, but completely lacks the force of Derek Jacobi in the Iliad and Odyssey. Jacobi's rendition of Hermes (Mercury) is that of a cheery lad, not the angry god who prods the wandering Aeneas ever onward.

I realize Virgil uses the Roman names of the gods, but I would have been more comfortable coming from hearing the Iliad and going right into the Aeneid using the Greek names. The continuity would have been better.

All in all, this version is okay seeing nothing better is available, but Mercury riding the sky's "breezes" I think would have been better rendered "winds."

It's a remarkable story and one I wish Jacobi would do. But it's easy to get spoiled after listening to him. No one else can come close, though Toby Stphens himself is far better than Scofield.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read with lyrical precision and dramatic grace
Aeneid is a uniquely presented, abridged translation and audio CD presentation of Virgil's timeless work of classical literature concerning a group of refugees from the ruined city of Troy, who seek a promised land yet are continually thwarted by the goddess Juno. The classic narrative saga poem is ably translated into English by C. Day Lewis and read with lyrical precision and dramatic grace by skilled actor Paul Scofield (additionally supported by the voices of Jill Balcon, Toby Stephens, Geraldine Fitzgerald, John McAndrew, and Stephen Thorne). Classical music enhances this grand work of great literature resulting in an emotional and highly recommended listening experience that endures the test of time. ... Read more

With an SD memory card slot or low-cost adapter - like those for digital cameras - this Audiofy audiobook chip can be played on Microsoft Windows and Apple Macintosh desktop computers or laptops (Microsoft Windows XP/2000/Me/98, or Apple Mac OS X 10.3.9 and above) or transferred to Apple iPod media players. 4-0 out of 5 stars 1950's Verse translation
Cecil Day Lewis's translation verse has a lucidity and swiftness that keeps the story moving.

C. Day Lewis was a student of Jackson Knight and translated the Aeneid in the early 50's a few years before Jackson Knight's famous Prose version. It was originally prepared and translated for a public broadcast, and so some liberties have been taken by C.D. Lewis, but overall it carries much fire and energy needed for such a long poem.

The only criticism I have is that the font used for the text is a bit hard on the eyes and the sentence layout is a bit cluttery. Personally I think that prose is more suitable for Virgil's Aeneid.

(However, I recently discovered Sarah Ruden's Verse translation and have to saw that I rank it at the VERY TOP of ALL previous Verse translations!...it is that incredible, I'm really short on words for her!)

-I would suggest comparing a few verse translations (Lewis VS Fitzgerald VS Ruden) and a couple prose translations (Knight VS West) to find out which one works the best for your studying / enjoyment.

Product Description

Among the most sumptuous buildings of antiquity were royal palaces. As in the Old World, kings and nobles of ancient Mexico and Peru had luxurious administrative quarters in cities, and exquisite pleasure palaces in the countryside. This volume explores the great houses of the ancient New World, from palaces of the Aztecs and Incas, looted by the Spanish conquistadors, to those lost high in the Andes and deep in the jungle. This volume, the first scholarly compendium of elite residences of the high cultures of the New World, presents definitive descriptions and interpretations by leading scholars in the field. Authoritative yet accessible, this extensively illustrated book will serve as an important resource for anthropologists, archaeologists, and historians of art, architecture, and related disciplines.
