5-0 out of 5 stars An underrated Master.
Daniel Stern's short stories are funny, wise, fresh and more than anything else a wonderful antidote to the dry, zombie stories that have been the rule in this MFA culture of literature. And I haven't even gotten to the fact that Stern boldly uses literature and art as a sort of ironic guidefor life, full of questions without any answers. He's read all the books, Imean all of them. Hopefully, Stern will be remember as part of the greatestLiterary movement of the post-WW II American scene, Jewish-Americanwriters. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Just another job?
As director of a Suicide Academy, Wolf Walker's biggest concerns seem to be fending off accusations from his assistant and wondering if his ex-wife had slept with her current boyfriend before her marriage with Wolf ended.

People contemplating suicide come to the Suicide Academy to take one day to decide whether to live or die. How they each die seems unaddressed. Whether they can stay if they haven't decided at the end of the day seems unaddressed. Why they would come is unclear. The Academy has been pursuing a policy of neutrality: the same percentage supposedly decide for sucide as if they had not come to the Academy. But that's being questioned by Academy board members. The guests leave money to the Academy, which depends on such gifts, and those who choose to take their lives apparently are more likely to leave a gift.

To resolve such conflict of interests would seem to call for an especially moral director. But while Wolf is worried whether his ex-wife had been unfaithful during their marriage, he's also slept coldly with an employee who's depressed over the suicide of a child. Wolf seems to think that having callous sex with her will help her: instead she burns the Academy down. Some direction.

No big deal, because Wolf is floundering. This book is largely the story of his floundering, just for a day and yet with the feeling that he's floundered like this for a long time and will continue to. That seems to be the real suicide, not a quick act but a way of empty existence that Wolf himself has adopted. Not drowning, but floating aimlessly endlessly. Caught in his self-absorption and defensivensess, there's no room in this story to learn about the guests, excepting his ex-wife and her boyfriend. Otherwise Wolf, his assistant and two board members occupy the stage.

It well could be a stage: this novel has the sketchiness of an absurdist play. Are we all guests at this academy? Are we equally disconnected from our jobs and feelings as Wolf Walker? What value does Wolf find in life? Stern is a gifted and uncommon writer, so you might find it worthwhile to share a day at this academy with him. I suspect it will tend not to bring you answers but it may raise some heavy questions. ... Read more
