4-0 out of 5 stars The Guardians try to carry a book by themselves...
...with mixed success.

This 190 page, 7"x10-1/2" hardcover, reprints the 10 issue tryout the Guardians had in Marvel Presents #3-12. Hitherto, the Guardians had been riding the coattails of the more established Marvel heroes, particularly the Defenders. Those stories were reproduced in the previous volume "Earth Shall Overcome".

There are two major story arcs. The first is an interesting, although confusing story that pits the Guardians against the star spanning Topographical Man. Along the way they pick up the (last surviving, of course) Mercurian, Nikki. The second arc delves into the origins of Starhawk. This story, although satisfying, leaves more than a few things unexplained. Separating the two are a reprint with framing sequence of the Silver Surfer's battle against the Badoon in the 20th century.

The stories are appropriately "cosmic" as was very popular in the '70s. Al Milgrom's art is adequate but is not nearly as clean and attractive as John Buscema's in the aforementioned Surfer reprint. The Gerber and Stern scripts are passable. One annoying thing is the characterization of Vance Astro as a dangerously violent hothead. This just doesn't seem to work.

The reproduction seems all right but not up to Masterwork standards.

All in all, for the aficionado of '70s Marvel only. There is a reason these characters never got off the C list.

3-0 out of 5 stars For Guardians lovers
I love reading the old origins of comic heroes I've come across over the years. This is no exception, but sometimes these older stories can be a 'harder' read, but enjoyable noetheless ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars There needs to be a better version
As others have already mentioned, there are many errors throughout this book and most of them are due to sloppiness, carelessness, or maybe laziness. Most of the mistakes that I have come across, including titles, years, names of people involved, program lengths, would be easily fixed. OF course it becomes overwhelming when you realize that if somebody who isn't even a radio historian has spotted that many mistakes, there must be hundreds more that I'm not even aware of.

But just as bothersome as the many glaring factual errors is the emphasis in the write ups of each program. A great deal of importance is placed on the names of the announcers and the sponsors, sometimes taking up a large portion of the thumbnail sketch, while very little is said about the nature of the actual program; the writers, the storylines, the changes undergone by the show; for instance that Burns and Allen went from being a somewhat surrealistic show about two people who were in a show together but were not romantically involved to being a show about a married couple that took place in their home (and not at the studio) seems to me to be something worth mentioning.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful, concise reference book about old time radio
Ron Lackmann's Encyclopedia of American Radio is a great book to have in a library. The descriptions of the celebrated radio programs of the past and the hundreds of short biographies of many of the most popular radio actors of the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, as well as those of several current radio performers, are informative and clearly and simply written. Most important, this is a fine reference book for anyone who wants to read about "old time" radio. The photographs in the book are really excellent and I have never seen most of them anywhere else before, in spite of the fact that I have read about old time radio extensively. This is a good book for young people who want to learn more about a radio show or a performer of the past they might have heard about in passing.I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in entertainment of the past.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nearly useless.
The only useful thing about this infuriating -- and inaccurate-- book is the selection of photos.Otherwise, get Dunning.

2-0 out of 5 stars Errors in book detract from its value
Nice photos, but how much faith can you put into the text when simple errors stick out like sore thumbs

For instance:

Man Called X: Ken Thurston did not have a girlfriend and had nothing to do with the Cafe Tamborine (that was an entirely different program.)

Jack Moyles did NOT replace Frank Sinatra as Rocky Fortune. That series ended when Sinatra left it. Moyles DID star in Rocky Jordan, an entirely different show.

It is little things like this and make the book suspect for me. How many more errors are in this book? What can one take as fact and not with a grain of salt?

Excellent concept, faulty execution. I would not buy this book again and am considering returning my copy for credit. I do not consider this book to be a valuable reference item. Casual reading yes...reference work...no

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Job Ron Lackmann
This book, The Encyclopedia of American Radio, is an excellent, comprehensive compilation of facts and photos relating to radio shows and personalities of the past that were part of Radio's Golden Age...the thirties, forties and fifties. It is a very fond look back at those days when we all gathered around the family radio and listened to such great shows as The Lone Ranger, The Shadow, The Lux Radio Theater, Jack Benny, et al.The amount of information given in this book is vast and the Appendices, which lists hundreds of dramatic anthology shows and personalities not given separate entries in the book, is extensive. An amazing achievememnt and it is Fun to read and not dull, which is more than I can say for other less well written Radio Encyclopedias that have been published in the last few years.Congratulations, Mr. Lackmann, for a job well done. ... Product Description

In this expanded edition, an accomplished physician and teacher of medicine discusses the importance of being a caring doctor, especially now that the focus of medicine is increasingly on technological innovation and health care costs.

With wisdom and compassion, Dr. Jerome Lowenstein tells stories about relationships between medical students and their teachers, physicians and their patients. He reflects on what doctors learn from treating chronic illness; how they respond to patients' needs for reassurance; how they bear the burden of treating patients with life-threatening or degenerative disease; whether the distinction between traditional and "alternative" medical treatment is ultimately beneficial or destructive; and many other issues. Dr. Lowenstein's ruminations on humanistic approaches to learning and practicing medicine will be treasured by physicians, medical students, and patients alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars Maintaining humanity in medicine
A series of interesting vignettes by a New York internist/nephrologist on maintaining humanity in medicine.Written in a "from the hip" style, Dr. Lowenstein's book focuses on many of the pitfalls plaguingmedicine today. With great and promising technological advances comes aloss of the human approach, something Dr. Lowenstein bemoans.Make nobones about it (no pun)--Dr. Lowenstein does not call for a return tosimpler times. However, his musings cause one to wonder if we have lostsomething special and important as the wheels of progress roll on.Manyanecdotes on a range of subjects regarding the daily life of doctors makethis book interesting reading for all, and especially for thosecontemplating entering the medical profession. With this book,Dr.Lowenstein certainly is not "holding the blood gas report", whichis the title of one of "The Midnight Meal's" particularlypoignant essays.

3-0 out of 5 stars Quick reading; nothing new
I was drawn to this book by the title; at our hospital, the "Midnight Meal" is somewhat of an institution much as it is described in Dr. Lowenstein's book. It is a time for the housestaff to congregate in a neutral area and shed the titles that usually stratify us. We become real people, if only for fifteen minutes, free to commiserate, pontificate, or luxuriate. Dr. Lowenstein has published a number of essays in his book which are thought-provoking and are based on his course in humanistic medicine. I found them more compelling for their anecdotal quality and less on their novelty or richness of language. For the latter, I might refer readers to Oliver Sacks or Lewis Thomas (although the latter is getting dated). It is easy to nod appreciatively at his statements, but another thing to agree wholeheartedly. For example, I'm not sure I have such a pessimistic view of alternative medicine as he does.Overall, a satisfying book (I finished it in about 2 hrs) but not one I think I will keep for my permanent library. ... Excerpt: I was broke, hungry, jobless ... yet despite the fact that all three of us are old-time aviators who did our part for the development of the industry, we were left out in the cold in the Administrations program of job making. Can you blame us for accepting the lucrative Spanish offer? Eddie August Henry Schneider (October 20, 1911 December 23, 1940) set three transcontinental airspeed records for pilots under the age of twenty-one in 1930. His plane was a Cessna Model AW with a Warner-Scarab engine, one of only 48 built, that he called "The Kangaroo". He set the east-to-west, then the west-to-east, and the combined round trip record. He was the youngest certificated pilot in the United States, and the youngest certified airplane mechanic. He was a pilot in the Spanish Civil War in the Yankee Squadron. He died in an airplane crash in 1940 while training another pilot, when a US Navy bomber clipped his plane's tail at Floyd Bennett Field. Eddie Schneider was born in 1911 at 2nd Avenue and 17th Street in Manhattan in New York. His father was Emil August Schneider (1886-1955), a banker and stock broker, born in Bielefeld, Germany. His mother was Inga Karoline Eldora Pedersen (1882-1927), who was born in Farsund, Norway. Eddie had one full sibling: Alice Violetta Schneider (1913-2002) who married John Harms (1905-1985). ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1422475 ... Read more

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Wack Pack is the name given to a wide assortment of personalities heard throughout the history of The Howard Stern Show. As a parody of the Rat Pack or Brat Pack, they are a considerable part of what the radio show became notable for. Members of the pack, known as "Wack Packers", tend to be unusual in some way such as being blatantly racist, mentally disabled, perverted or having a comical voice, appearance or ability. Not every regular guest on the show is considered a member, nor are any of the show's staff members. ... Read more

Excerpt: The Howard Stern Show is an American talk radio show hosted by Howard Stern, broadcasting on his two uncensored channels on satellite radio service Sirius XM since January 2006. The show developed while on terrestrial radio, when Stern became a morning disc jockey at WCCC in Hartford in 1979, two years into his professional radio career. Stern continued to break out as a personality while at WWWW in Detroit in 1980, despite a lack in the Arbitron radio ratings. In early 1981, Stern would have much success in the radio ratings at WWDC in Washington, D.C. after pairing with his on-air news anchor Robin Quivers. Pursuing his dream to broadcast in New York City, Stern signed a contract with WNBC in mid-1982 working afternoons. Although differences with management restricted him creatively, Stern would host the city's top afternoon show by the spring of 1985. Stern however, was abruptly fired in September 1985 due to "conceptual differ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1092791 ... Read more
