4-0 out of 5 stars Good story, sweet illustrations, just challenging enough
This book is very well-crafted.My seven-year-old enjoyed reading it, and I liked the illustrations and the emphasis on problem-solving skills.Henry and Mudge are experts at finding creative solutions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cute story
Actually, I haven't read this book---my daughter did. To me. Shes a beginning reader and did quite well. She was able to enjoy the story and read it capably---which says something, I think, about the excellent quality of the author. The illustrations were fun, too. Henry's cousin, Annie, "deserves" a nice pet. Search out the perfect pet for her with Henry and his parents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Series
Our kids just love these books both for when we read them to them and for them to read later to us. I just wish they would create a series of books in one larger collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT STORIES
My youngest son Ramon now 7 loves these books. He always likes to read them over and over again. The stories are easy to read and the illustrations are great. He loved this book too. We both love the story of the family reunion. Even my 14 year old son enjoys reading them with him. He says that these books are really cool for little kids. These were also big with my nephew Wyatt who is 9 and in the fourth grade when he was in the second grade. He always used to ask me Do you have any more Henry & Mudge books the next time you come over. He enjoyed them as well and has a bunch of them. Great books to be passed to and from families to be enjoyed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Henry and Mudge and the WholeFamily
As usual in this cheerful series, Henry and his big dog Mudge arefeatured in three related stories, this time about a family reunion. They receive a letter labeled "invitation."

Henry loved invitations.
Mudge loved them, too,
because they usually
meant cake.

Much of the book'shumor andwarmth is structured by these boy-dog comparisons. Sucie Stevenson's pleasant watercolor and pen-and-ink drawings are loose, spacious, and casual. The storycenters on old-fashioned extended family fun, but it is not quite as interesting or engagingas others in the series.Still, the portrayal of intergeneration and inter-species love is sweet. The publishers rate "Henry and Mudge in the Family Trees" as a"Level 2 Reading Together" book, and the book jacket says "Ages 6-8."Rylant and Stevenson have written many "Henry and Mudge" books, and you might want to explore some of their other books offered here.

5-0 out of 5 stars A gem of a book for kids and parents alike
Stumbling upon the Henry and Mudge books was like stumbling upon a gold mine.My first grader and my preschooler absolutely love these books. This one is my personal favorite but every one of these adventures iswonderful. Rylant uses simple words so beautifully. I can't think of abetter way for us to help our children learn to love reading than by givingthem books that tell great stories in such well-written fashion.Althoughthe stories are about a boy and his dog, they appeal to my daughters, neither of whom even like dogs (or boys, for that matter). Six andseven-year olds should be able to read them for themselves, and youngerchildren will love to hear them read over and over. If you're looking for agreat series of books for 4-7 year olds, check out all of the books in thisseries. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great start for reading!
My oldest who is 6 isstruggling with reading. At first, he still struggled but we have it for awhile so we'll keep practicing it.

I liked it cause it kept repeating things so maybe he'd gain some confidence. Repetition seems to be a good key to learning how to read. I read it myself and found it very simple.

After a little frustration, he even started to giggle. I definitely amglad I picked this one up for him.

4-0 out of 5 stars Recommended for beginning readers who love dogs
I've used different sets of books in helping my now 5-year-old daughter learn to read. This series "Puppy Mudge" was one of the early books that we used back when she was four and which we still use for practice. The books in this Ready-To-Read series are categorized into 4 levels:
Pre-Level 1 - Recognizing Words
Level 1 - Starting to Read
Level 2 - Reading Independently
Level 3 - Reading Proficiently

At 5, my daughter is currently at Level 1. In these pre-level 1 books, children who are starting to show an interest in reading will find the story of Puppy Mudge (and a rather large puppy he is too!) interesting and engaging, though perhaps not as adorable as Biscuit (created by Alyssa Satin Capucilli). Mudge gets into all sorts of scrapes and the stories rely on certain key words being repeated throughout the story. Here the words are "snack" and "cute". These books are suited for children ages 4-6. I would also recommend the Biscuit books, i.e. Biscuit's New Trick (My First I Can Read),Biscuit Wants to Play (My First I Can Read), Bathtime for Biscuit (My First I Can Read).

5-0 out of 5 stars More Rylant Magic!
My daughter loves reading this book and she also enjoys having this book read to her (over and over).
Cynthia Rylant is one of our favorite authors.Even in simple, early reader-type books, she has a way
of turning prose into poetry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very nice series of books
Henry and Mudge Under the Yellow Moon
This series of stories are sweet and fun. My 4 year old boy enjoys the adventures of this boy and his dog.
We like that it is a realistic dog who does doggy things. His "thoughts and feelings" are related by actions in the story. They are peaceful, loving, charming stories. When Mudge lays his big head on Henry's bed at night you just feel the security and love.

5-0 out of 5 stars We love Mudge!
In this book Henry and his big dog, Mudge, enjoy the escapades of fall. They shake together as Henry's mom tells scary Halloween stories and together they endure the Thanksgiving visit from Aunt Sally. These booksare a favorite for my reluctant reader. 5-0 out of 5 stars Another Henry and Mudge Hit
The Henry and Mudge series is among the favorite list in our house. We discovered it at the library and have read them all now.
This is a typically book in the series and tells the story about how Henry, Henry's Dad, and Henry's big dog Mudge survive a gloomy February weekend.
Highly recommended to Mudge lovers everywhere!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for a cold weekend
This is an easy-to-read book about being caught inside on a nasty day. My 1st grader read this book to the family on a cold, nasty February Saturday morning. It was a great "text-to-text" connection to have a book about being trapped inside on a weekend morning--we could totally identify. And later, the book inspired my kids to make their own couch-cushions fort instead of complaining about being bored!

The Henry and Mudge books are such a wonderful series. The charming water color and ink pictures--and the realistic kid adventures--create an engaging experience for early readers. The author does an almost magical job relaying the fears, temptations and ambitions of childhood. Also, many kids can identify with Henry's passionate love for his big dog, Mudge. Plus, this series will appeal to both boys and girls.

The series is at the 1st grade reading level. This book is a "chapter" book (not a "baby" book) with 3 Chapters, and about 40 pages of half text, half artwork. (Just to give you an idea of the reading level, the Henry and Mudge books are easier than Magic Tree House, but harder than the advanced Bob books.)

Note: you might want to purchase Henry And Mudge First Book before this book or with this book. It introduces the characters used in the rest of the series.

Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very sweet reminder of what REALLY matters
I really like this book--how the parents think that Henry is important enough for their time and energy, how they eat pizza, how the dog just chews a boot and is a sweet, goofy dog.Rylant captures "real" family life and the importance of our kids, and I thank her for that.

5-0 out of 5 stars 2nd Graders in Lockport LOVE the Henry and Mudge stories!
Our names are Luisa, Casey, Tom, Joshua, Tim, Megan, Alex, and Janae. We read Henry and Mudge and the Long Weekend. Here is our summary of the book: Henry and Mudge got up one Saturday Morning in February andlooked outside. The weather was disgusting. They couldn't go outside andthere was nothing to do. Everything was boring to Henry and Mudge. They were so bored that Henry and Mudge went to sleep on the couch withDad. Henry's mother had the idea to make a castle out of the bigrefrigerator and stove boxes. Henry, Mom, and Dad started making thecastle.Mom drew, Dad cut, Henry stapled, and Mudge chewed an old boot. The family woke up the next morning and started to work on the castle.Momread the newspaper and drank coffee.Henry and his father finished thecastle. They showed it to Mom.It looked nice.It looked like a realcastle.Mom, Dad, Henry, and Mudge had a good weekend!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great book!
I love the story line.A family working together on a yukky weekend minus the TV to do something fun.I esp. loved the picture of mom sitting at the table reading the paper while dad and son were building the castle in thebasement. My kindergartener loved it!We will definitely read more ofthese books! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great Henry and Mudge Book!
My 1st grader just loves Henry and Mudge books. They are "chapter" books-- and not "baby" books. But, they are easy to read. (Easier than Magic Tree House, for example.) Plus, this series appeals to both boys and girls (but especially boys).

This book deals with learning to be around people who are different from you. In this case, Henry learns to deal with, and actually have fun with, a somewhat prissy cousin. I love how the book tackles the important concept of enjoying people who are different from you without introducing the disturbing idea of racial prejudice and other adult-type prejudices to young children (who are not prejudice to begin with!)

Note: you might want to purchase Henry And Mudge First Book before this book or with this book. It introduces the characters used in the rest of the series.
