5-0 out of 5 stars Annie's dad wasn't very good at decorating, but with Henry's help that would change!
Annie was a very lucky girl. She lived next door to her cousin Henry, her best friend in the whole world. They each had a pet.She had Snowball, a bunny, and he had a great big goofy dog named Mudge. They did all kinds of things together. They played Frisbee, tied knots and painted her dollhouse.Annie and Henry were always nice to each other and Annie just "LOVED Mudge."Things can't get much better than that, but there was one thing that bothered Annie. It was the fact that she didn't have a very pretty house. Her dad "wasn't very good at making things very pretty."

Clean and nice somehow wasn't enough.Flowers in a coffee can was nice, but. . .Annie "wanted pretty."One day when they were talking about this Henry told her that there were "tons of pretty things" in the attic that she could borrow.WOW!Now that sounded like something she would love and visions started to dance in her head. After getting permission they went up to the attic. There was a pink lamp, a crazy quilt and a flowery patterned chair.Everything was so beautiful, but would her dad let her "change their plain house to a pretty house?"

This is a charming story, perhaps one a child being raised by a single parent could relate to.Sometimes children don't always know how to say how they feel about things to their parents or care givers. The illustrations were bright, cheerful and action oriented. This is and will remain a popular book you won't want to overlook. This is a Level 2 "Ready-To-Read" book that children will be able to read independently. If you have flowers in a coffee can you might be able to take some decorating lessons from Annie!

5-0 out of 5 stars MEMORIES
This is one of my very favorite children's book by one of my very favorite children's authors, Cynthia Rylant.I have enjoyed many hours of reading The Ticky Tacky Doll with my grandaughters.A few months ago, I made a Ticky Tacky Doll for my grandaughter, Kylie. While sewing is not my gift, she was delighted with her doll and her book. This book is a beautiful story of love and insight into the emotions of a child.

5-0 out of 5 stars Annie and Henry are all excited about the little robin and her "five blue eggs" and you will be too!
Springtime is always a pleasant time and May was an especially nice month.Annie went to her cousin Henry's birthday party.Of course her bunny Snowball was sitting on the table and Henry's dog Mudge had his eye on the birthday cake.Once she was back home sitting on the porch swing enjoying the nice weather with Snowball, Annie noticed something very interesting nestled above the climbing roses."Snowball, look. . .a nest!"Of course this was something that Henry had to come over and look at!

They watched and waited to see who was building the nest bit by bit. There were "even some small bits of fur" in there. Finally they saw a little robin perched inside the nest.Annie sat on the porch swing day after day watching the robin sit on her nest.Annie's dad picked her up so she could peek inside the nest and Henry's dad did the same thing for him. There were "five blue eggs" in the nest.Everyone was very excited and could hardly wait for the eggs to hatch. They were told that "mother birds do not like fingers touching their eggs, but there was no harm in watching.

This is an easy reader that is geared toward a successful reading experience. The plot of the story is fun and has just the right amount of excitement and tension to coax the young reader along to the end to find out what happens to the mother robin and her babies. The illustrations are colorful and are very appealing. This is a level two "Ready-To-Read" book that encourages independent reading. There is "varied sentence structure" and it has "paragraphs and short chapters." This book is a sure fire draw to any beginning reader! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful easy-reader
My 1st grader loves reading Henry and Mudge books. The charming water color and ink pictures--and the realistic kid adventures--create an engaging experience for early readers. The author does an almost magical job relaying the fears, temptations and ambitions of childhood. Also, many kids can identify with Henry's passionate love for his big dog, Mudge. Plus, this series will appeal to both boys and girls.

The series is at the 1st grade reading level. This book is a "chapter" book (not a "baby" book) with 3 Chapters, and about 40 pages of half text, half artwork. (Just to give you an idea of the reading level, the Henry and Mudge books are easier than Magic Tree House, but harder than the advanced Bob books.)

This particular book deals with the excitement and fear of moving from one house to another. Annie, Henry's beloved frisbee throwing cousin, moves in next door to Henry. She is nervous about the move but ends up adjusting well. It would be a wonderful book for a family who is moving, but the fears described--and creatively dealt with--also apply to many other childhood transitions.

Note: you might want to purchase "Henry And Mudge the First Book" and also "The Careful Cousin" book before this book or with this book. Those two books introduce the characters used in the rest of the series.

Enjoy!

4-0 out of 5 stars Puppy Mudge books are great for children beginning to read
When I began to teach my daughter to read at about age 4 (she was not keen before that), I found that there are not many reviews on these early readers to help me decide which books were good and worth investing in. I hope that my reviews of these books will benefit parents trying to choose appropriate readers for their children. The problem I faced was that some books indicate that they are Level 1 readers, but when I bought them, I realized some are way too advanced for the level my daughter was in at the time. Also, different publishers have different ways of categorizing the readers and it is important to realize these distinctions in order to build up a child's skills in reading without overwhelming a child or using a book which is at an inappropriate level for a particular child.

Anyway, I've used different sets of books in helping my now 5-year-old daughter learn to read. This series "Puppy Mudge" was one of the early books that we used back when she was four and which we still use for practice. The books in this Ready-To-Read series are categorized into 4 levels:
Pre-Level 1 - Recognizing Words
Level 1 - Starting to Read
Level 2 - Reading Independently
Level 3 - Reading Proficiently

At 5, my daughter is currently at Level 1. In these pre-level 1 books, children who are starting to show an interest in reading will find the story of Puppy Mudge (and a rather large puppy he is too!) interesting and engaging, though perhaps not as adorable as Biscuit (created by Alyssa Satin Capucilli). Mudge gets into all sorts of scrapes and the stories rely on certain key words being repeated throughout the story. Here the words are "blanket", "look" and "sniff". These books are suited for children ages 4-6. I would also recommend the Biscuit books, i.e. Biscuit's New Trick (My First I Can Read),Biscuit Wants to Play (My First I Can Read), Bathtime for Biscuit (My First I Can Read).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This is a great book. One of my son's favorites in the series. Highly recommend this, and the whole Henry and Mudge series, as well as the Mr. Putter and Tabby series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Henry and Mudge
My granddaughter squealed with delight when she got this book for Christmas. It's part of her favorite series of books.I was glad I was able to find it for her.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely outstanding
This engaging picture book, "Henry and Mudge and the Great Grandpas", is an enchanting story with creative pictures and entertaining humor. Henry, a young boy, and his dog Mudge, brobdingnagian and loving, go exploring at their Great Grandpas and find a swimming pond. Knowing not to swim without a buddy, they go to canvas for swimmers. Before Henry knows it, all the Great Grandpas are wanting to go swimming! If you read this book, you will start flipping and flailing with guffawing mirth like I did when the Grandpas went swimming in their skivvies! When done, the Great Grandpas, tired as sloths, rested on Mudge, the gargantuan dog, but he didn't mind. It's an outstanding picture book so I would rate it a 5 out of 5 stars. This book is a foolproof gift for a young reader, so give it a try!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book was amazing!
Amazing and astonishing, Cynthia Rylant is a spectacular author, with the Henry and Mudge books being her best. This particular one, Henry and Mudge and the Great Grandpas, a perfect pick for young children, will engage them because of the silly plot and illustrations, with creative watercolor pictures and entertaining humor. The story revolves around Henry, a young, adventurous boy and Mudge, a large and loving dog who go pioneering, when they find a pond. Eager, they rush back to the house where their many great grandpas live, and everyone, except the mother, goes swimming in their skivvies. One of my favorite pictures is of the pond, shimmering with crystal light as if it was a small piece of heaven.Of course, Cynthia Rylant shouldn't get that credit.Sucie Stevenson does, although she was inspired by Cynthia Rylant's books. She blends good-humored cartoon-like paintings with the story perfectly. This book, heartwarming and amusing, made me guffaw in maniacal laughter. If you read this book, you'll certainly be flipping and flailing in mirth as I did.I'd evaluate this with five stars, and if you know a small child, this is a foolproof gift.Reviewed by Adam

4-0 out of 5 stars Why have just one great-grandpa when you can get a full pack for free?
As a general rule, you do not expect the 26th book in a series for early readers to garner for itself that many awards.I mean, you just don't.In the world of adult, teen, and older children's fiction, any book series that reaches #26 is going to start showing some wear and tear at that point. As for awards, books for early readers don't get that many. They don't!It really wasn't until just last year that the American Library Association decided to FINALLY get about awarding books for kids who are just beginning to read on their own.Called, appropriately enough, the Theodor Seuss Geisel Award, there was one absolute hands down winner this year and three good-natured runners-up.The winner?None other than book number 26 in the Henry and Mudge series, "Henry and Mudge and the Great Grandpas".Color me amazed.I'd read some of the H&M tales back in the day. They were nice but never particularly amazing to me.I mean, Cynthia Rylant has produced more series books for young readers than any other writer living. What made "Great Grandpas" so fabulous?Reading it through now, I still think that "A Splendid Friend, Indeed", deserved the top honor but there's no denying that "Great Grandpas" has a kind of charm that's difficult to resist.

You may not know it, but Henry's Great-Grandpa Bill lives not too far from our heroes Henry (boy) and Mudge (dog). He lives in a beautiful house with a bunch of old men, much like himself, and every once in a while Henry's family visits them. They play games and bring the house of Grandpas butterscotch, and books, and crossword puzzles. As you can imagine, they are very popular. One day, as his parents and the Grandpas stay indoors, Henry and Mudge discover a beautiful pond behind the house. Immediately the two return to the house and invite everyone out for some fine swimming. This is done, in lieu of bathing suits, in what the Grandpas call their "skivvies".Mom, as you might imagine, quite sensibly opts this one out. Then everyone comes home to spaghetti and meatballs and some fine fine sitting in rocking chairs on the porch at night.

I once worked in a library that had a young boy who attended a school for autistic children. He didn't care for much on my shelves, but the one series that earned his love and always had him coming back for more was "Henry and Mudge".The kid couldn't get enough of the books.I don't know if it was the doggish aspects of the story, the simplicity of the art, or the comfortable feeling a person gets from reading one of their adventures, but this boy was Mudge-crazy.In this particular outing, Rylant offers some gentle repetition that works in tandem with the plot. The Grandpas, for all their charms, tire easily.Often Mudge acts as a kind of support or pillow for those Grandpas. And the old fellow resting on the faithful dog is never the same Grandpa twice.Nice that.Together Rylant and illustrator Sucie Stevenson have conjured up a retirement home that all of us would be lucky to end up in.Beautiful scenery.Woods.Rocking chairs.Croquet.Heck, I'm in my twenties and I'm half tempted to find this house and settle down for the rest of my golden years.Who wouldn't want to?It sounds delish.

The plot is sweet and offers enough new and familiar words to help child readers everywhere.Especial kudos also to Rylant for making it very clear that Henry is not allowed to swim all by himself without a grown-up present.Aside from the "Gus and Grandpa" series by Claudia Mills, I don't think anyone's going to find a better early reader book for grandparents and kids to read together with as much mutual satisfaction. The book bears more than a passing resemblance to Mem Fox's classic, "Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge", of course. In both books a young boy befriends an old folks home full of caring elderly adults.A comparison between the two isn't exactly fair, though."Wilfrid" has layers and layers of depth and beauty to it, while "Great Grandpas" is just a wonderful romp with wonderful companions. All in all, this is just a great addition to an already strong series and one that more and more adults are coming to discover.Fun and fine and frolicsome. ...
