Stewart's SINGLE VARIABLE CALCULUS WITH VECTOR FUNCTIONS: CONCEPTS AND CONTEXTS offers a streamlined approach to teaching calculus, focusing on major concepts and supporting those with precise definitions, patient explanations, and carefully graded problems. Goes behind the rumors to discuss the truth about Whitewater, Vince Foster's suicide, and other White House scandals, explaining how these alleged scandals have been exploited, White House reaction, and the future of the presidency. Amazon.com Review
Stewart has written a vivid portrait of political power, political and personal intrigue, and how information, controlled and manipulated atthe right time, can change the course of lives, careers, and ultimately, history. This is the story of the Clintons, from their days in Little Rock to theirbehavior under duress in the White House; their business partners, who swept theClintons into their real estate empire, then faced financial ruin; and their manypolitical and business allies who have been tarnished by association, includingthe tragic Vincent Foster. For anyone interested in American democracy, the revelations of Blood Sport will reverberate through this and future presidencies. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars More timely now than it was in '97
I understand there is no intelligence requirement prior to voting, but at the very least this book should be mandatory reading before the upcoming election.
People should know that James Stewart was actually invited by Hillary Clinton to write this expose. When the truth became far less flattering than she would have scripted she attempted to control the author's work.
Mr. Stewart refused any intervention and went on to publish the book with out the blessing of the wicked witch of the east.
The attention to detail is flawless. The accuracy is frightening and the truth is impossible to ignore.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hard to know where the truth ends and fiction begins.
Although Stewart is a reputable author, and in fact a Pulitzer Prize winner, this book is a remarkable farrago of fact and fantasy. It is written as a "docudrama," featuring numerous "recreated" dialogues between characters, and indeed even internal narratives and the innermost thoughts of people whom Stewart never interviewed, and in some cases never even met. It's impossible to tell what is factual, what is embellished from others' memories, and what is merely invention by Stewart himself.

It's also notable that everyone who agreed to serve as a source for Stewart is treated far better than those who refused -- and that includes both Clintons and many of their closest friends and associates.

The book is filled with easily correctable inaccuracies, such as when the book gives us a scene showing Hillary Clinton receiving the news of Vince Foster's death while at "the Rodham home in Little Rock, where Hillary was visiting her mother and father, who was ill."Hillary's father Hugh Rodham had died three months earlier.Another scene shows a young Bill Clinton visiting "kingmaker" Jim McDougal in 1975, hoping for McDougal's help in running for Pryor's Senate seat. Not bad, except Pryor was Governor, not Senator, in 1975, and McDougal was hardly powerful enough to be any sort of "kingmaker."White supremacist Jim Johnson, a virulent Clinton-hater who accused Clinton of being, among other things, a "n*gger-lover," and served as one of Stewart's sources, is portrayed as a genial "Democrat-turned-Republican" whose racial hatreds are never mentioned.Other errors abound.Judge David Hale, a businessman and convicted embezzler, is said to have been appointed to the bench by Clinton, when in fact it was Frank White, Clinton's predecessor, who appointed Hale.Hale is also portrayed as breaking the law by loaning money to his "Democrat friends," when in fact Hale made far more loans to Republicans than Democrats, and he broke the law by embezzling over $2 million from the federal government.

Stewart's primary source is Jim McDougal. The real estate wheeler-dealer, who suffered from manic-depression and was convicted of multiple felonies and died in prison, is a notorious liar who lied under oath to more than one court and federal investigator.Stewart also seems completely unaware of the Pillsbury Report, the RTC investigation that completely exonerated the Clintons of any wrongdoing in 1995, and instead relied completely on the then-ongoing Kenneth Starr investigation, which was proven to be full of sensationalistic lies and never returned a single indictment against either of the Clintons for anything. He ignores completely the well-documented body of evidence proving that McDougal committed a raft of financial crimes, and tries to pin the criminal wrongdoings on the Clintons without citing any evidence.

Perhaps worst of all, he tries to link the Vince Foster suicide to Whitewater. This was disproven time and time again -- by the Park Police investigation, by the FBI, by Robert Fiske's independent counsel, and by Kenneth Starr himself.

Stewart made at least one more egregrious error.Shortly after the book's publication he went on "Nightline" to accuse Hillary Clinton of submitting a false loan report relating to Whitewater. He says she submitted the loan report without filling out key sections.Yet in his own appendix, Stewart reprints the loan document, which, if you bother to turn it over and read the back, shows that Hillary did indeed complete the loan document properly.Stewart never bothered to flip the document over and read the back.

The book is worthless, yet another in the seemingly endless parade of baseless, easily disprovable Clinton smears that filled the bookshelves at the time.I see that Amazon currently has used copies for sale for 1 cent.Save your money; this book isn't worth that bent piece of copper.

4-0 out of 5 stars What is real?
Although I thought this book was an easy read into the whole Clinton-Hillary Whitewater debacle (was it really that simple?)....it seems there were some inconsistancies concerning what was presented on the Vince Foster items( as can be easily researched). This, in turn, makes me wonder about the accuracy about the rest of the story of Whitewater and the innocence of the Clintons.
Sometimes one just can't get over the feeling that certain publications are out there to "tidy things up".

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the story of the Clintons BEFORE 1993
The American people were forewarned long ago that this was no ordinary (if there could be such a description) political couple.James B. Stewart delineates the machinations that typified the Clinton story throughout Bill Clinton's Arkansas governorship. Now a lot of this is intertwined with the peculiarities of Arkansas society, where it seems everybody knows everybody else (no offense to many decent Arkansans; much of my family hails from there). And this may be why Kenneth Starr was not able to find solid evidence of wrongdoing, although he obtained several convictions of Clinton associates.Yet to many of us Whitewater was a real-estate deal a sitting state Attorney General and later Governor would not touch with a ten- or even a twenty-foot pole. And that goes double for Castle Grande, cattle futures and Madison Guaranty Trust.Under other circumstances an office holder would have put his or her assets into a blind trust. This intrigue has continued into Bill Clinton's Presidency and beyond (White House coffees, stayovers in the Lincoln Bedroom, selling of sensitive technological information for campaign contributions, selling of pardons, the sneaking of antiques out of the White House, the financing of the Chappaqua house purchase and Hillary Rodham Clinton's registry with several department stores in the manner of an expectant bride--note that for her actual wedding in 1975, she bought her wedding dress off the rack at Dillard's the day before). And those are just the FINANCIAL intrigues!

5-0 out of 5 stars Convinced this Republican
I read this book in 1997 when the paperback came out.I approached this book as a moderate GOP much in love with Reagan and Bush 41.I never voted for Clinton, but was intrigued by him for several reasons:

1)He was executing wonderfully in '97 (see Morris' "Behind the Oval Office" for this period), even though the GOP-dominated house had elevated partisan politics to the art form it is today.
2)The Press was crucifying him over Whitewater and I did not understand why, it all seemed so trivial.

My conclusions:
There is a case to be that Hillary Clinton may have evaded taxes and obstructed justice - while criminal and deserving oflaw enforcement investigation, no reason for an investigation against the President instigated by the DoJ.

Stewart confirms that the investigation of Whitewater was pure politics of personal destruction.Bill Clinton did nothing wrong, certainly nothing that demanded any sort of investigation and obstructed his ability to preside over our nation.

There were trivial matters that make President Clinton less than perfect, but you can find dirt on any ambituous person. The question is, did his actions have a negative impact on our country? This book presents no evidence of that, the only negativity emanating out of this was the ammunition it provided to the GOP and the media to divert our attention from matters of State.

One somewhat comic note was the number of idiots that were part of the Clinton circle. While Clinton was a master at bringing together extremely bright and powerful moderates and attempting to pull the Dems out of the socialistic FDR era, the people he associated with more regularly are a hoot! ... This was my great experience in purchase this book for my son.Not just good price but it also came in with the workbook as well.

2-0 out of 5 stars An opinion
I think this book didn't help me that much. The answers seemed to have multiple errors. I had a horrible professor (wasn't great at teaching me the subject), and the book didn't help me either. I'm typically an A,B student and I was totally lost the whole semester. If you need help with the subjectthis book will not help. I'm giving this book 2 stars for the fact that it may have been my professor that confused me more than the book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Adventure
I was not previously familiar with the author, but loved his style.Thebook reminded me of the movie "Forrest Gump".An incredible lifestory based on a man chasing his first crush, but continually gettingcaught up in incredible adventures along the way.A good lesson onhistory, geography, and different cultures.I wish Woodrow hadn't diedbefore we got to hear the end of his adventures! Two thumbs up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent change of pace for Thayer: Completely enjoyable!
Traveling through the lintriguing life of Woodrow, I couldn't put this onedown until I learned about his world. Excellent change of pace from theone-story thriller, this book has it all!

5-0 out of 5 stars totally delightful.Did not want it to end!
Very enjoyable book.Well written.Found it fun to follow Woodrow Lowe throughout his life.Great summer time reading.Dry wit, lots of chuckles!

3-0 out of 5 stars A good, but not great, read.
Thayer's novel lacks the charm and literary prowess of Thomas Berger's "Little Big Man" while following in the same tradition.Although the book is humorous, the resolution is weak, and some of the historical personalities are used as deus ex machinas, solving Woodrow Lowe's dilemmas. This novel nevertheless has its amusing points and most readers will enjoy this trip through history. If "Man of the Century" strikes your fancy, I recommend George MacDonald Fraser's "Flashman" series.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book opens a world that is hard to leave!
This is a hypnotically compelling trip througha series of adventures in the protagonist's past, each a perfectly shaped and suspenseful drama in itself. The retelling of these events is so intense and involving that I felt as if I were physically falling forward through the book. The greatest joy, next to the beautiful writing, is the rich and fascinating detail describing the exotic places, events and practices in these adventures. This author appears to be a master of a thousand primitive arts. I was amazed, shocked, educated and vastly entertained. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy the Book!!!!!!!I Give It 0 Stars!!!!!!!
Personally, I haven't bought the book. But I wouldn't buy it because it is an UNAUTHORIZED BIOGRAPHY.Usually, the information from these books comes from TV shows, magazines, tabloids, etc.I'm a fan of Patrick Stewart and even if I wasn't, I wouldn't buy the book because most of it is probably not true or allegedly true. When Mr. Stewart rights his own biography or gives someone permission to write it for him, then I'll believe it.

1-0 out of 5 stars What garbage!
In deference to my longstanding crush on Patrick Stewart, my husband gave this to me as a joke, and a joke it is!If I were to gather up a pile of fanzines, tabloids and talk show video clips, I could have written thisbook (although I hope I would have proofread it a little better. The typosare legion.)The "authors" did nothing except cut and pastepreviously published material -- no additional research or interviews wentinto producing it.Faithfully repeating what Mr. Stewart said to Jay Lenois about as insightful as it gets. All my Amazon pals who gave this 5stars might want to try reading a real biography some time!

5-0 out of 5 stars outstanding behind-the-scenes look at STTNG
I found the biographical information on Stewart very interesting and welldone.Plus, the book gives a great look at the happenings behind thescenes during the making of the Next Generation television series.Ithoroughly enjoyed the book and had a hard time putting it down.

3-0 out of 5 stars Solid research marred by tabloid-style narrative
Authors Hatfield and Burt sifted through mountains of press clippings and hours of interviews to give their readers a solid foundation of facts about the life of actor Patrick Stewart. These facts, however, are often couched in an "En-quiring minds want to know" writing style that does a great disservice, at times, to their subject as well as their own hard work. Tales of Stewart's violent childhood are harrowing enough without the Dickensian embellishments by Hatfield/Burt. The star's private life (an oxymoron?) as "documented" in tabloid headlines gets an extra dash of spice by the smirking account supplied by the authors. Stories of conflict with Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry show Stewart as a canny operator not unlike some of the Shakepearean villians he has portrayed. Hatfield and Burt didn't need to resort to tabloidization; the truth is colorful and fascinating enough. Stewart fans hungry for information will find facts and documentatio! n in plenty here, and overlook the dramatizations.

4-0 out of 5 stars juicy but respectful personal view of Patrick Stewart
More than just the Star Trek years, this book really goes into Stewart's youth. It is very focused on his personal life. The photos are nice and the tone of the book is respectful, but it does pry very deeply into Stewart's personal life. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Man In Christ
I bought A MAN IN CHRIST back in the 80s.
It quite simply in the top 3 of all the literally 1000s of books I have read over the last 35 years.

I have returned to Amazon to order a copy for a friend.
Today in postmodern America knowing and understanding Paul's all consuming passion for God in the Exalted Christ is truly vital and transformational.

There is little I can add to what has already been positively said here about the book itself.
The book is quite simply the best.

Stewart himself says in his preface:
"the conviction has grown steadily upon me that union with Christ, rather than justification or election or eschatology, or indeed any of the other great apostolic themes, is the real clue to an understanding of Paul's thought and experience;..to those today who are seeking -- by a fresh study of the New Testament - a surer grip of the centralities of the faith and a deepening of their own spiritual life."

Oh, that all Christians might "see", "hear" and receive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pure Gold
This work is a classic and one of the best I've read on the subject matter, Pauline Christianity. Stewart expresses the heart of Paul in his own unique way and it has created a bond between him and me. It will always be in my library and I will do my best to re-read this work every year.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
This is an absolutely superb look at Paul's theology and thinking. It is firmly grounded in the fact of Paul's conversion and how everything that he did and wrote stemmed from his connection to Christ. There are just a ton of quotes in here that are priceless gems.I underline new ones every time I read the book.I don't know why I had never heard of this book prior to reading Major Ian Thomas' book "The Saving Life Of Christ".He mentions it and I have found it to be one of my favorites ever.If you have any interest in basic, living Christianity, this book is an abolute MUST!

5-0 out of 5 stars A true blessing
I cannot belive no one has critiqued this book yet. I bought this book over a year ago and since then I have read it multiple times. This is the scoop--there are multiples books on St. Paul out there. If you are an intellectual or a scholar interested only in the latest research about Paul and his letters this book is not for you. Obviously (based on date of publication) it is dated in terms of authorship of some of the letters and the use of the book of Acts as a reference on Paul. Now, if you are thirsting for the kind of information or knowledge that will transform your thinking about Paul and Christ and yourself this is definetively the book to read. My recommendation is read a few of the new scholarship books, saturate yourself with information regarding St. Paul life and what was happening during the first century; memorize his letters--especially Galatians, Corinthians and Romans and the come HOME to this book. Mr Stewart will help you share in the experience of being "in Christ". This book is to be chewed on and savor, meditate on his words and finally experience it and you will be sharing in St. Paul's transformative experience of being "in Christ". The taste is truly in the pudding. ... Read more

Product Description
Once again keeping a keen ear to the needs of the evolving calculus community, Stewart created this text at the suggestion and with the collaboration of professors in the mathematics department at Texas A&M University. With an early introduction to vectors and vector functions, the approach is ideal for engineering students who use vectors early in their curriculum. Stewart begins by introducing vectors in Chapter 1, along with their basic operations, such as addition, scalar multiplication, and dot product. The definition of vector functions and parametric curves is given at the end of Chapter 1 using a two-dimensional trajectory of a projectile as motivation. Limits, derivatives, and integrals of vector functions are interwoven throughout the subsequent chapters. As with the other texts in his Calculus series, in Early Vectors Stewart makes us of heuristic examples to reveal calculus to students. His examples stand out because they are not just models for problem solving or a means of demonstrating techniques - they also encourage students to develop an analytic view of the subject. This heuristic or discovery approach in the examples give students an intuitive feeling for analysis. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Taught me calculus
It's been a few years since I've sold my copy of this book. I used this book for my 3 semesters of Calculus at Texas A&M and have to say I loved the book.

Now granted, I prefer to learn by observing then doing. I sit down with my homework and look for example problems similar to my homework problems so I can see how their solved, then attempt to repeat the process. This book is GREAT for this as it contains tons and tons of examples problems, at least one for every type of question you could be asked (though sometimes you have to look at 2 examples to do 1 problem, there are still those 2 examples to draw on). I don't particularly remember any homework amongst 3 calculus courses that I couldn't flip to a page in the book and find an example problem(s) that showed me how to solve the problem.

I remember wishing that my other math courses had books like this one, particularly my Linear Algebra class.

3-0 out of 5 stars They made it fair
I ordered this book as a hard cover and in 'GOOD' condition. What I got was a soft cover in pretty bad condition.I was frantic as I ordered it a month before my son was to go to college and the way they do their shipping I couldn't get a tracking number until over a week after purchase.Luckily it showed in time but it was awful.I was concerned that the cover would even last through the semester.I contacted them via email about the tracking and after I received the book and they said that their record showed me getting a hard cover.Somebody in their processing department is not doing their job.How do you mistake a hard cover for a soft cover? YOU CAN'T! Anyway I didn't have time to do the whole trade out so my son took the book.I suppose (after reading the reviews) I should consider myself lucky as nothing was written in the book.THEY DID REFUND ME THE DIFFERENCE IN PRICE FROM A HARD COPY TO A SOFT COPY AND THEY DID IT RIGHT AWAY.Just wish I had gotten what I wanted.

5-0 out of 5 stars Adv Calculus
The seller paid a lot of money beyond what was described for shipping to get me the text in time for my emergency tutoring session.Much appreciated.Text in great condition.Thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent purchase
Book was in pristine condition, shipment was on time. I will buy from them again.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not sure how this book survives...
This is without a doubt the worst textbook I have ever owned. Okay, so it's calculus. It's a hard subject, and people do need to understand that; I know I do. However, this book goes to the unnecessary limits to ensure that anyone who is trying to learn calculus without the aide of a Mathematics Professor will surely fair, and waste countless hours trying to learn the notation that is used in the book, but never used in lecture or in the application courses (such as Engineering and Physics).

The language used in this book talks with a tone of "theory", and never speaks in "teacher". It's amazing how my professor can go over the material in class, and it'll make perfect sense; solving the problems are... not a problem. However, learning a section without the professor is simply a nightmare.

If you really want to learn vectors before learning the "actual calculus", I recommend purchasing an introductory physics text, and learning from there. Perhaps this is good book; if you eat, breathe and sleep theory talk. Otherwise, try to find another calculus book...

5-0 out of 5 stars James Stewart - An Apostle for Our Generation
This is the one book that will bring the church back to life - back to the path to reaching a lost world. James Stewart makes us gospel-centered and therefore truly Christ-centered. This is the book that could give us the one true revival that the church has so desperately longed for. Nothing is so critical in this hour as `A Faith to Proclaim'.
Although the book was written over fifty years ago, it bears the testimony of Christ on a level perhaps unrivalled in modern times. To my knowledge no book so passionately points to the fulfillment of the Great Commission. James Stewart, like Abel, though he be dead, yet lives among us and still speaks to our generation. Those who love the gospel will also appreciate a literary style that truly makes the English language live! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best college algebra book
This college algebra textbook is the best one on the market. James Stewart is the leader seller in Calculus textbooks. I love James Stewarts textbooks. The explanations in this textbook are clear and easy to understand. It covers all the material needed college algebra especially for pre calculus. James Stewart also has "algebra and trigonometry" textbook which I use as well he also has "Trigonometry" but I havent got that one. This is textbook is the best one out there!!!!

it was like i bought at my college bookstore except it was A LOT more cheaper. if u think ur not sure on whether or not to buy a book online, trust when I say there is no place better, especially if u lookin to get it on the cheap.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Satisfied
I ordered the express shipping because I needed the book a.s.a.p. I'm a student at Cal State Long Beach and the university bookstore always ran out and would take an eternity plus 10 years to restock. Also, the retail price for it was over 160 bucks plus tax. That's over 170 bucks together. I purchased this book for like...around 140 if i can recall? Anyway, it was shipped seal wrapped and in perfectly new condition. I was very satisfied. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't explain
For all the visual learners trying to learn calculus three, this book is not good at all.The chapters give what seems to be simple problems with enough explanation, but yet the examples never went over the material they're asking you to do.The book would be great if it were able to show how to do the problems.

4-0 out of 5 stars I found it helpful
The study guide goes over major ideas that you need to know for each section. It also gives example problems for studying.Found it very helpful when studying for all of my exams in my calculus III class.

1-0 out of 5 stars Useless, useless, useless
This book is useless. I originally bought this guide because I had a hard time understanding the explainations in the original book. Turns out that this guide explains it the exact same way. Copying basically everything inthe red box in the book. Bottom line, if you can't understand the book, youcan't understand this guide. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I disagree 100%
I have read (almost) nothing but negative reviews about this book.I used this book for Single and Multi-Variable Calculus and had no problem with it at all.
This book isn't the end-all Calculus book, but I will say that being someone who always thought of himself as "non-mathematically inclined," I had no trouble at all with the theorems, proofs or examples Stewart provides.
It's not too complex, it doesn't skip steps (usually) and it is very thorough.

1-0 out of 5 stars if only there was a "zero stars" option
I am attempting to learn calculus for the first time.I did wonderfully in pre-calculus, but this horrible book (and my thickly accented disorganized professor) have forced me to withdraw from the class and try again later.

The author appears to be writing for other calculus teachers who already understand the material. The writing is incredibly confusing. The examples are not very helpful. The questions at the end of the sections are too few, and do not do a good job of building up difficulty.I find that it is easier to learn math concepts if you have a large quantity of problems to work on that start simple and progressively add more difficult aspects to them.

If you are a professor thinking about using this book for your class, PLEASE RECONSIDER!If you are student with the misfortune of having to use this book for your class, hopefully your professor speaks so that you can understand him/her and maybe get another calc book to actually LEARN SOMETHING FROM.

1-0 out of 5 stars Calculus Concepts and Contexts 2ed
I have to have this book for my calculus classes at the college I attend. This is my first semester in Calculus II (hopefully, I won't have to repeat it like I did Calc I) and this book is completly horrid for anyone who is shaky in math at all.The examples the book uses are next to useless (I mean, really, Calculus for Dummies is a better book than this is), the organization is atrocious (having two or more names for the SAME thing, even if it occurs later on in the book, is absurd), and the CDROM is useless.Seeing as how this is now my third semester with this book, I can fairly say (since there is no way I will change my mind) that this is the WORST math book I have ever had the misfortune to use and I have told that to all three of my professors.I have also, on the semester evaluations, failed this book with the lowest grade possible.Of course, I have also literally pitched it at the wall on numerous occasions and have spent many nights frustrated beyond belief to the point where, if I had had matches, I would have burned it to ash.I cannot begin to stress what a god awful book this is and I beseach all of the prospective professors to think long and hard before commiting your classes to suffer through calculus with this monstrosity.

To say that I hate this book does not do justice to my feelings of animosity towards it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Is this the only Calculus book for college students??
First off, I had no choice but to buy this book.

What can I say about this book that hasn't already been said?Is this the only book on Calculus?I like to think I am adequet in mathmatics, my number one gripe was I did not take advantage of Amazon before I shelled out the full 150 dollars for this book, I could have had this crad for $50.I have a precalulus book by Michael Sullivan (whom I wish was writing this book), his explanation are pretty good, especially when he refers you back to solving a problem after he has gone over the examples, without that book I would have never done well in precalculus class, I basically thought myself from his book.

Buying this book I thought James Stewart wrote a little like Michael, boy was I wrong, there are hardly any examples to refer back to when working out problems from the book, its justlike "okay here are some numbers and theorems, now heres the answer!"The only reason I gave this a second star, was because of the CD-ROM that comes accomodated with this book giving hints on how to solve some selected problems. This book feels more like a text book (reading) than a typical math book, I understand that once you get to Calculus 1 one should be fluent in math, but still there's no reason for this.Maybe he wrote this book for student who like to skip class, because the only way to understand this book is with the help of a math professor.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good problems, bad organization
This book was actually my textbook for 3 semesters in a row, and, throughout that time, I've been basically forced to live with this book next to me at almost all times. There are certainly some good points and bad, but I'll start with the good.

First off, the book does an excellent job, in my opinion, of giving every student of (almost) all ability levels a chance to grasp some deep calculus theories. For the math majors, that includes theoretical proofs (though most are just sketched in there!) and some good proof problems near the end of each section, and, for the non-math people, many applied problems (both "textbook" and "real-world" applied problems) combined with many routine drill-type problems to drive the concepts home.I also liked the numerous amounts of graphs and pictures drawn in the book, especially for 3-D graphing and surfaces, where it's not as easy to construct those by hand. His review of algebra and trigonometry is also very helpful, as my high school did not cover some of the topics in my precalc class before I took calculus I in college.

But, for the bad, my first gripe is with the organization. You can obviously tell that the book was written in two volumes as there is a clear shift from single-variable to multi-variable in the style of presentation (less examples in the multi-variable, no CD-ROM help available) and language (he shifts from a "let's be nice to the student" point of view in the beginning to skipping some essential steps in exercises and writing like a math professor as you go along!).Also, I felt that some of the sections were out of place where they were, like the l'Hospital's Rule section being right in-between a bunch of sections on physical applications of dervatives? While I can certainly see it as being an application of derivatives, I see it as much more of a theoretical topic than an application; in my opinion, it should come near the end of techniques of differentiation (chapter 3).Also, I felt that he should've included more examples with the solids of revolution sections, one of the hardest parts of calculus for me (and MANY other people in my class); it's one of the only sections in single-variable that considers 3-D problems; therefore, it should be taken slowly, in my opinion. One other gripe: the cost! That's a lot of money to be shelling out on a single book!Luckily, I knew I would use it for three semesters, so it was worth it.If you're not planning on taking multi-variable calculus, then only buy the single-variable volume to save yourself some money!

So, my final thought:If you're looking for a book with a lot of exercises for all levels, then this is definitely a good book.If you're looking for a book to essentially replace a teacher, then this book won't do that.A good teacher will most likely need to accompany this book to really get something out of it. ... Product Description
Whether as lawgiver, tyrant or matyr, James I has cast a long shadow over the history of Scotland. Conditioned by a childhood surrounded by the rivalries of the Stewart family, and by 18 years of enforced exile in England, he was to prove a king very different from his elderly and conservative forerunners. The author concludes that, despite the apparent power and glamour, James I's "golden age" had shallow roots: after a life of drastically swinging fortunes, James I was to meet his end in a violent coup, a victim of his own methods. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars James Stewart is one of the great actors of his era.
In my opinion James Stewart is one of the greatest actors of his era. I love to watch all of his films, Westerns, Family films, Mystery, etc.I read Fishgalls book with great anticipation for I wanted to know all there is to know about James Stewart. After finishing the book I disappointed my expectations were not met. The first part of the book "Part One: Jim" is my favorite section. Fishgall goes into detail about James family live. The book has a family tree dating back to 1742. However the family tree ends with James. I would have been nice for it to include his wife and children. I did enjoy reading about his parents and his life in Indiana Pa.As I read more of the book I realize the book was more of a filmography that it is a personal biography. The Author goes into painful detail about each movie Jim was in, explaining who wrote it, directed it, produced it, stared or costarred in it and what the critics said of the movie. The book was sparse on it treatment of James personal life. What he did when he was not in a movie. His friends, and family. His joys and pains his reactions to the death of his friend Henry Fonda, his wife and his son. In the last chapter "It's Over" it is very apparent that the author did not know what to write about when Jim was not in a move. He reduced over a decade of Jim's life into six pages. There was nothing about his funeral, who attended, where it was held or where he and his wife were buried. I think Stewart sums up the book himself when he said "I'm not a journalist and I don't like the idea of hiring a `ghost' or having a live story written by someone other than the person who lived it."I wish James Stewart had written that book. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Plus and Minus
The content of the book was in great shape - pages clean and intact. However, the cover has a huge crease in the front. The product was marked as "good" but there was no indication that this was the defect. Purely cosmetic, but still dissatisfying.

Product Description
This book is a response to those instructors who feel that calculus textbooks are too big. In writing the book James Stewart asked himself:What is essential for a three-semester calculus course for scientists and engineers? Stewart's SINGLE VARIABLE ESSENTIAL CALCULUS: EARLY TRANSCENDENTALS offers a concise approach to teaching calculus, focusing on major concepts and supporting those with precise definitions, patient explanations, and carefully graded problems. SINGLE VARIABLE ESSENTIAL CALCULUS: EARLY TRANSCENDENTALS is only 850 pages-two-thirds the size of Stewart's other calculus texts (CALCULUS, FIFTH EDITION AND CALCULUS, EARLY TRANSCENDENTALS, Fifth Edition)-yet it contains almost all of the same topics. The author achieved this relative brevity mainly by condensing the exposition and by putting some of the features on the website www.StewartCalculus.com. Despite the reduced size of the book, there is still a modern flavor: Conceptual understanding and technology are not neglected, though they are not as prominent as in Stewart's other books. SINGLE VARIABLE ESSENTIAL CALCULUS: EARLY TRANSCENDENTALS has been written with the same attention to detail, eye for innovation, and meticulous accuracy that have made Stewart's textbooks the best-selling calculus texts in the world. ...
