This is an original and provocative critique of the popular view of the radical break between idealism and existentialism in nineteenth-century thought. The history of Continental philosophy is often conceived as being represented by two major schools: German idealism and phenomenology/existentialism. These two schools are frequently juxtaposed so as to highlight their purported radical differences. There is a commonly held view that an abrupt break occurred in the nineteenth century, resulting in a disdainful rejection of idealism in all its forms. This break is often located in the transition from Hegel to Kierkegaard. The history of philosophy in the first half of the nineteenth century has thus been read as a grand confrontation between the overambitious rationalistic system of Hegel and the devastating criticisms of it by Kierkegaard's philosophy of existence. Some critics have been concerned that young adultsin the United States are beginning to turn away fromtraditional sources of political news such as ABCWorld News in favor of nontraditional programs suchas The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.In this study,a random sample of 884 UNC-CH students participatedin an online survey that assessed their newsconsumption habits and political socializationfactors such as political knowledge, strength ofpolitical opinions, levels of political cynicism,trust, and efficacy, interpersonal communication andpolitical participation. Two clear trends emerged.First, young adults still are using more traditionalthan nontraditional television news. Comedy showswith political satire were the only nontraditionalTV news category to rank in their top five sourcesof political news. Second, traditional TV newsconsumption is related to higher political efficacy,while the use of nontraditional news is related tohigher political knowledge, opinion holding andactivity. ... This small book provides attractive color pictures of every wildflower that it covers.The first time or sometime enthusiast will enjoy this book much more than the more broadly focused Jaeger and Munz classics that have fewer color plates and devote most of their coverage to the Mohave Desert.1998 has been an extraordinary spring wildflower year.I have attempted to use all three books and found that my success with this one was such that I was able to find and identify about 3/4 of the flowers in the book just from my trips to Borrego Springs, Mecca Road (Box Canyon), Joshua Tree and the Colorado River. ...
