4-0 out of 5 stars great cookbook with accurate recipes
Coming from generations of Islanders, I have grown up with many of the recipes that are in here. They are quite accurate in detailing culinary life on the Island. The recipes are fairly easy for those with any success in the kitchen and allow everyone to get a glimpse of our food. The Portuguese section also contains some of the recipes that are so popular in our Holy Ghost celebration. For any natives, tourists, or just lovers of our beautiful island, this cookbook is a must! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I command you to read this book!!!!
Anyone would be insane to rate this book below five stars. One of the best reads of the year.Meachum has brilliantly tapped into the enigma that is the life of Martha Stewart. If you have kids, buy this book forthem.Heck, buy one for yourself as well. You shan't regret it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Intertesting reading tracking the journey of Martha's climb.
Marthat Stewart in herself is an interesting woman. She must have strongleadership to get where she is at.And honestly I was hoping to read moreabout her leadership capabilities, how she organizes her days in some depthand some of the obstacles she had to arise from.I did learn about herupbringing, all her successful steps and how she buys this and decoratesand entertains that.It was good reading, but I was hungry for more anddid not feel the price tag was worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes! Yes!
Oh boy, I can't wait to read this book! And that's not just because I helped do the research for it (well, I Xeroxed an article and mailed it to the talented and lovely author, that is.) It's extremely well-written and Virgina Meachum has utterly mastered the difference between passive and active voice (I helped with that, too.) But seriously, it's an insightful and awesome book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Magzine gift idea for weddings
Great Wedding magazine! I gave this to my best friend when she got engaged, and it worked out very well! Great gift idea, lots of good information, ideas, etc!

5-0 out of 5 stars Martha Stewart's Keepsake Wedding Planner
I first saw this on the Martha show several years ago, and was very excited to still be able to purchase it through amazon.com, now that my oldest daughter recently became engaged and her younger sister will be acting as "wedding planner" and maid of honor. It is an excellent resource. We especially love the flower directory!! I think it will be an indispensable source of advice, tips and information as we prepare for the big day, and also a precious keepsake and memory book. Thank you, Martha, Darcy Miller and everyone @ MSO. I have been and remain a devoted fan and follower of all things Martha!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful planner.
I just received this planner in the mail yesterday and I can already tell it's going to be helpful! It has a lot of good information about wedding etiquette, which I really didn't know much about. I noticed in previous reviews that some people were not pleased with the quality of the product - it seems well made to me. The binder is like any other 3 ring, and as long as you don't throw it around it looks like it will hold up very well. The flower glossary is extremely informative. I will be relying heavily on this planner throughout the process!

4-0 out of 5 stars good ideas
I love throwing parties and was looking for some clever and easy ways to dress up my table.I did get some ideas. It's not the best entertaining book out there but I do think it was worth the money.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of Martha's latest entertaining books
This book is so much better than Martha's very first entertaining book (called MARTHA STEWART ENTERTAINING). The ideas are up to date and follow the same format as most of Martha's "GOOD THINGS" series.

The reason I give this book four stars instead of five is because of the price. This book is a soft-cover book and in my opinion should have been priced lower by the publishers. I paid full price for this book and probably should have waited until it went on sale. However, if a reader is interested in a book as soon as it first comes out, then thy will have to pay full-price. But, possibly, now that the book has been out for a while, you may be able to find this book at discount, and if so, then it's worth a SALE price.

The photos are inspiring and amazing. The photos themselves will inspire the reader to organize a party. The ideas are seasonal, from Winter to Summer. The recipes are easy to duplicate(in my opinion), although some are not for the average novice.

The art projects are very clever. There are enough craft ideas shown in this book that a reader could find at the very least a few useful and doable projects.

3-0 out of 5 stars nice pictures
Martha Steward is a classic. She is a strong woman that I admire. This book however is lacking substance. I flip through it and so just couple of nice advices.

An inspiring source of ideas for creating a variety of celebrations, from fun and festive to elegant and refined, Great Parties features fully illustrated, step-by-step instructions to help readers throw a party that is as special as it is memorable. Full-color photos.Amazon.com Review
While this book is very much in the style of Martha Stewart, the parties that it depicts were planned and executed by other folks. There'sa Louisiana lunch at a stately home outside Baton Rouge, complete withmaquechoux oysters and pecan-crusted catfish; a garden harvest party, with mountains of vegetarian delights served in an East Hamptongarden; a Vietnamese-Thai feast in a garden by the Sacramento River, with the signature flavors of Southeast Asian cooking--lime, ginger, lemongrass, chile paste--gracing spring rolls, chicken, and fish; asoul-food brunch given by an interior designer in Harlem that includescollard greens, gumbo, and sweet potato tarts. Details such as how tomake lovely, lotus-like napkin folds are illustrated in "GoodThings" sidebars. From the down-home barbecue in a horse arena inMarfa, Texas, to the Polynesian fantasy picnic on the beach in Maui, the key to a great party, says Martha, is caring--"about people, originality, the most attractive settings, and lovely, finely honed,time-honored traditions." And let's not forget food. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars buenas fiestas
el libro esta muy bueno para quien quiere realizar fiestas con diferentes motivos de cocinas regionales de diferentes paises

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Party Themes
This book is filled with an array of creative parties, there are 11 party themes ranging from simple to more elaborate. The book is also filled with many recipes, crafts, and decoration ideas; most of which are accompanied by beautiful photographs :)

4-0 out of 5 stars I Love Theme Parties!
Theme parties are great!Getting your guests to "dress the part" isn't at all difficult! If you want people to dress up, just inform them that it is a "themed costume party".Your guests will try to out-do each other with their creative costumes. It really makes things a lot of fun and makes decorating in a theme really worth the effort! My friends and I have one about once a month.

I think Martha is great, but no one should follow any entertaining "to the letter".These books are for just for ideas and Martha's ideas are some of the best, hence her empire.

Regarding the woman with the "waterfront property" whose party was a "fiasco", no one with a third home in Switzerland knows how to throw a party.Hence, the story is a total fraud by someone who harbors some sort of grudge.Did the shiitake gravy turn out badly for you in front of the husband's boss? She didn't realize that anyone with that much wealth would hire a professional party planner who would do all the work for them.I should know, I have a good friend is actually is a professional party planner.Whomever the "reader" with a grudge is, she's made a common nouveau riche (or no riche at all) mistake of misundersanding the role played by those in the upper classes.Marha isn't upper class (contrary to popular opinion). She's upper-middle class, the highest class who still cook at home for themselves during the holidays and for parties.Upper and lower don't mean "better" and "worse" - as class measures they're just indicators of lifestyle.Upper Middles have the most fun :)

1-0 out of 5 stars Dreadful. Our partywas almost a fiasco
We planned a wonderful dinner party for 100 guests at our waterfront home. I hired the best chef & event planner I could find and told them to follow this book. They said they many of the things just would not work or would take forever.

We were saved at the last minute by a very resourceful neighbor who attended finishing school, graduated from Wellsley and has a third home in Switzerland.

My husband was furious and threw the book away.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get's the juices flowing!
Now I know that we can't all go to Texas to have an authentic Tex-Mex fiesta, but the ideas are great none the less. Who care's if no one comes dressed the part? This book is all about themes. Themes that you can manipulate and call your own. Each party is beautifully photographed and the recipes are delicious. They even offer her infamous "Good Things" as a sidebar for many of the parties. Don't let the perfection overwhelm you. This book delievers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The whole menu
I've had this book for a number of years and everytime I have company or want to spoil my husband I pull out this MS classic. I have the whole meal planned, take the xeroxed pages shopping, and I have a great dinner. No guessing what side dish goes with what. I truly appreciate the planning that went into this edition and the recipes are excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of her best!
This is my favorite Martha Stewart book - and I have several. The menus are original but yet not over the top. I have actually tried and used the recipes - and have been asked for them - which to me is the ultimate compliment. The pictures are great - this is a book you will actually use - instead of just reading and putting back into your cookbook library. Buy this book, you won't be disappointed.

Great Book, Being seasonal it is filled with ideas for the holidays, Thanks!Lovely photos, very easy to read instructions for recipes and crafts!

5-0 out of 5 stars Holiday Inspiration
This is a great book if you are looking for some holiday ideas.Buy it or check it out of the library early (right after Thanksgiving, if not before) because you'll want some time to plan some of these projects.

Martha Stewart is always full of great ideas and this book has one great idea after another. This has decorating, gifts, food, just about everything. Some are more practical than others and many can be simplified so you can do them with your children. Each year my son and I make a wreath for our front door using Marthas book as our inspiration.

We also make a simple Christmas ornament each year for each one of our children's classmates. This is time consuming, so be careful which one you choose, because once you have a couple of kids you could be in for a really long project. Since we are up to almost 80 classmates at this point, we have set up an assembly line with each of the kids doing a step and the oldest doing more if needed.

If you can find it, Martha Stewart Holiday Cookies, a magazine I bought Christmas 2005 is a great resource for Christmas Cookies.I wish that she would put this out as a book since my copy is already worn after just one Christmas.I have resorted to color copies of the recipes we liked best just to make sure it lasts.

Editorial Review

Product Description
Ten years ago, Martha Stewart made cooking a primary focus of her bold new magazine, Martha Stewart Living. Over the decade, each issue has been a treasure of culinary information and inspiration, bringing the pleasures of cooking and entertaining--in impeccable style--to millions of devoted readers, from novice cooks to professional caterers.

At last all of Martha's favorite magazine recipes have been gathered in a single volume. The Martha Stewart Cookbook is a compendium of the best of the best from the food pages of every issue. But more than a mere collection, this specially designed volume is a major step in Martha's mission to keep home cooking traditions alive. The Martha Stewart Cookbook is filled with recipes--1200 in all--for every kind of cook and every occasion. Some recipes invite you to stretch your cooking knowledge and expertise while others provide inspiration--and instruction--for what to have for dinner.

Organized, in trademark style, for maximum practicality and ease of use, this major general-purpose cookbook features nineteen classically arranged chapters, from Basics, Breakfast, and Hors d:Oeuvres to Meat, Poultry, Fish and Shellfish and Desserts. In between there are Salads, Soups, Vegetables and whole chapters devoted to Vegetarian Main Courses and Potatoes. Throughout, there are basic classes--cooking 101s--for making food that should be in every cook's repertoire: macaroni and cheese, omelets, roast turkey, fried chicken and mashed potatoes. Specialty dishes are here, too, whether the occasion calls for a casual cocktail party, dinner with the in-laws, or a sit down luncheon for a bride-to-be. Cooking tips and techniques, pantry and equipment glossaries plus a guide to finding unusual ingredients make the kitchen tested recipes accessible to home cooks everywhere. An ideal reference, The Martha Stewart Cookbook belongs on every kitchen counter in America.

Martha Stewart is the author of thirteen best-selling original books on food, entertaining, gardening, and home restoration, is the chairman and chief executive officer of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. She lives in Connecticut, Maine, and on Long Island.Amazon.com Review
Avowed Martha Stewart fans--and the rest of us, too--have cause to applaud. The Martha Stewart Living Cookbook, which marks the 10th anniversary of the magazine from which the book takes its name and 1,200 recipes, is a winner. A wide-ranging trove, it tackles with equal aplomb the basics--from fried chicken to apple pie--and "newer" dishes such as Roasted Eggplant and Red Pepper Soup, Veal Stew with Shallots and Wild Mushrooms, and Pistachio Gelato. Both daily cookbook and stylish culinary guide, Living should prove useful to cooks facing the what-should-we-have-for-dinner dilemma and those seeking delicious dishes for entertaining.

The book's 19 chapters cover every dish type. Ranging from hors d'oeuvres to desserts (there are three chapters on sweets, plus candy-making formulas), and including sections devoted to vegetarian main courses, salsas, sauces, and dips, Living's world-spanning dishes are imaginatively conceived and meticulously presented. A few standouts among many include Pappardelle with Osso Buco Sauce, Chunky Vegetable Potpie, and Ginger Pecan Cake. Also at hand are comprehensive ingredient and equipment glossaries; cooking tips and techniques; "101" recipes (basic formulas such as Omelet 101); extensive lists of food and equipment sources; and 32 pages of color photos. Like its parent publication, the book strikes just the right chord for those who want to cook along with Martha. --Arthur Boehm ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good cooking recipes
Good and diverse recipes but lacking color and photographs in later cookbooks created by Martha.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mixed Results from Recipes
I have had mixed results from this cookbook.

For desserts: The white cake is a disaster-much to dry.The apple pie is okay. The chocolate desserts come out better.

For entrees: The cookbook has greater success when the recipes are basic. The risotto is wonderful, very creamy and cheesy. The meatballs came out okay.

I wouldn't recommend purchasing this cookbook for a novice cook. There are often difficult-to-find ingredients or unusual preparations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fruitcake Lovers Unite!
I love fruitcake and I have sampled so many recipes that my friends call me Dr. Fruitcake! Martha Stewart's recipe is the greatest! It's more than just fruit and nuts loaded with rum. It has body, and character. No holiday table should be without this recipe and several others featured in this fine book.

A tell-all account of the life of the renowned hostess and domestic expert recounts her rise to fame as an author, writer, and television star and uncovers the shocking secrets behind her pristine image. 150,000 first printing."Amazon.com Review
You'll want to wear old clothes: Jerry Oppenheimer's biographyof Style Doyenne Martha Stewart is a frenzy of mudslinging. Withchapter titles like "A Dysfunctional Family," you knowexactly what to expect--but Stewart is such a big, fat target that thebook is entertaining anyway. Obviously, the architect of MarthaStewart Living Omnimedia is no sweetheart. (Control issues? You don'tsay). But regardless of the muck, you'll come away with a mixture ofrespect for Stewart's talent and prodigious drive ("I can will anorgasm whenever I want"), and profound gratitude that she's notyour daughter, wife, mother, friend, or business associate. JustDesserts affords brief glimpses of the private Martha. She wascalled "Marty" in high school. She modeled her way throughBarnard. She may have engaged in wife-swapping. But anyone surprisedthat Martha the domestic goddess is a work of fiction misses the pointentirely. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a good thing!
Overexposure is not a problem for Martha Stewart.According to Jerry Oppenheimer's unauthorized Martha bio appropriately titled, "Just Desserts", Martha sought the spotlight at all costs. Her tremendous success story from a meager means to an omnipresent, omnimedia mogul is astounding and well worth reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved it
Every wonder why Martha Stewart is like she is?This book explains a lot. A very interesting read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Martha Stewart is Living the Omnimedia.
I do not remember the first time I saw Martha Stewart, but it wasn't until the tv-movie, MARTHA INC, THE STORY OF MARTHA STEWART (2003), starring Cybil Shepherd, portraying Martha Stewart, that I began to pay attention to who is Martha Stewart. My mother even bought me a gift, a Martha Stewart Everyday acrylic/polyester blanet and I still did not know who Martha was. After Martha's stock ordeal and her time in a women's jail facility, when her new NBC daytime show, "Martha" debuted on September 12, 2005, I began to have more respect for Ms. Stewart. I believe Ms. Stewart has learned her lesson well and I like her new show and watch her helpful hints everyday.
This book, "Just Desserts--The Unauthorized Biography (of) Martha Stewart", by Jerry Oppenheimer, really is a "tell-all" book about Martha Kostyra from birth to her time of modeling as an adult, appearing in a Lifebuoy Soap commercial, marrying Andy Stewart, becoming a mother, a stockbroker, her time with Levitz Furniture, catering business, "The Market Basket at the Common Market" and the "Entertaining" cookbook (1982).
Also covered is her divorce, becoming a spokesperson for K-Mart, her next coperate partner Time Warner and her television show, "Martha Stewart Living".
In 1997, Martha Stewart went out on her own and she paid millions of dollars to take control of her destiny.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must-Read book on America's premiere con-artist
She wasn't my cup of tea before, but after reading this book I think Martha Stewart is the lowest scum of the earth. Too bad she only got 5 months in jail. The evidence is overwhelming that she has full-blown Narcissistic Personality Disorder, just like the infamous Joan Crawford of "Mommy Dearest." Martha's father had it too. People with NPD are extremely despicable and horrible to be around. They use you, abuse you, and treat you like garbage. I wish everyone would read this book and quit buying her stupid sham products. If I want a real cookbook, I'll read one written by a great chef, not this faker. I want a cookbook written by someone who truly has their heart and soul into cooking and also has great training and expertise. Martha is none of that. She is merely a former caterer who cheated her customers and employees. She has fooled people into believing that she's an expert. I hate everything Martha Stewart stands for, and what she truly stands for is blind ambition, greed, cheating people, and projecting a ridiculous false image to the world. She doesn't actually care about cooking or domestic arts. They are merely the means to what she really cares about: money and attention. She is so repulsive and inhuman that no man wants to be with her. Her lack of ethics and constant cheating and taking maximum advantage of people reminds me of the robber barons of the 19th century. She would've fit right in with those criminals. I want this whole disgusting Martha phenomenon to end once and for all, the sooner the better. I wish someone with integrity and true talent and passion were in her place instead of a disgusting, despicable person like her. She makes all these ridiculous, stupid ideas that nobody has the time and few people have the money to execute. I like intelligent cooking shows such as "America's Test Kitchen" where they have smart people who know what they're talking about and actually give you information that you can use.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dessert?NO THANKYOU!
I have tried to stomach this book with no success. For a while I carried it around in the car to read waiting for kids or appointments, but finally brought it back into the house. This morning I read a few of the reviews of other readers and made one more pass through the book, but have decided to send it on the next trip to the landfill- it is not even something I would donate to the free shelf at the library- the only positive thing I can say is that the author appears to have done a lot of research- a lot of which is unbearably tedious and just takes up space. The title which is what caught my interest, is deceivingly clever- I see now there are several books that use the same play on words. With so many good books that one cannot possibly hope to find time to read them all, don't waste your time- or integrity- on this.I spent $6.99 on this and I'm throwing it in the garbage where it belongs.I gave this book a star because that was the lowest rating available, a kindness
on behalf of Amazon. ... Read more
