Product Description
Best Laid Plans looks at the long-standing but unresolved debate of the virtues and values of multilateralism vs. unilateralism in American foreign policy. Stewart Patrick argues that a combination of enduring identity commitments and new ideas, based on the lessons of recent, cataclysmic events, shaped the policy preferences of American central decision-makers in the Roosevelt and Truman administrations. Although steeped in history, the book's conclusions have tremendous relevance for the contemporary era, as debates are rife about the role of multilateral cooperation in the realization of U.S. foreign policy objectives. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy the Book!!!!!!!I Give It 0 Stars!!!!!!!
Personally, I haven't bought the book. But I wouldn't buy it because it is an UNAUTHORIZED BIOGRAPHY.Usually, the information from these books comes from TV shows, magazines, tabloids, etc.I'm a fan of Patrick Stewart and even if I wasn't, I wouldn't buy the book because most of it is probably not true or allegedly true. When Mr. Stewart rights his own biography or gives someone permission to write it for him, then I'll believe it.

1-0 out of 5 stars What garbage!
In deference to my longstanding crush on Patrick Stewart, my husband gave this to me as a joke, and a joke it is!If I were to gather up a pile of fanzines, tabloids and talk show video clips, I could have written thisbook (although I hope I would have proofread it a little better. The typosare legion.)The "authors" did nothing except cut and pastepreviously published material -- no additional research or interviews wentinto producing it.Faithfully repeating what Mr. Stewart said to Jay Lenois about as insightful as it gets. All my Amazon pals who gave this 5stars might want to try reading a real biography some time!

5-0 out of 5 stars outstanding behind-the-scenes look at STTNG
I found the biographical information on Stewart very interesting and welldone.Plus, the book gives a great look at the happenings behind thescenes during the making of the Next Generation television series.Ithoroughly enjoyed the book and had a hard time putting it down.

3-0 out of 5 stars Solid research marred by tabloid-style narrative
Authors Hatfield and Burt sifted through mountains of press clippings and hours of interviews to give their readers a solid foundation of facts about the life of actor Patrick Stewart. These facts, however, are often couched in an "En-quiring minds want to know" writing style that does a great disservice, at times, to their subject as well as their own hard work. Tales of Stewart's violent childhood are harrowing enough without the Dickensian embellishments by Hatfield/Burt. The star's private life (an oxymoron?) as "documented" in tabloid headlines gets an extra dash of spice by the smirking account supplied by the authors. Stories of conflict with Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry show Stewart as a canny operator not unlike some of the Shakepearean villians he has portrayed. Hatfield and Burt didn't need to resort to tabloidization; the truth is colorful and fascinating enough. Stewart fans hungry for information will find facts and documentatio! n in plenty here, and overlook the dramatizations.

4-0 out of 5 stars juicy but respectful personal view of Patrick Stewart
More than just the Star Trek years, this book really goes into Stewart's youth. It is very focused on his personal life. The photos are nice and the tone of the book is respectful, but it does pry very deeply into Stewart's personal life. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sublime performance, I was transfixed
I saw Sir Patrick perform this on Broadway in 1994.I was in the second row. When I heard, prior to the show, that he was using the most minimal of props, no set design to speak of, an all but bare stage, I was sceptical. Then I thought, "well...he has Shakesperian training...how bad could he be?"There are no words to adequately describe how sweet, how wonderful, how perfect his performance was.Magical comes to mind.I was literally swooning on the edge of my seat throughout the entire performance.

I am a huge fan of Dickens and I have always loved the Alistair Simms version of this story, but Patrick Stewart's performance tops all that I have seen.Interestingly, the recent computer version starring Jim Carey was high up in my ratings, as well.Another huge surprise for me--after Dumb and Dumber, I was steeled for bitter disappointment...but back to Sir Patrick.Let me put it this way...if I could ever see anything again, a repeat performance, this would be it. Absolutely delightful from start to finish.

5-0 out of 5 stars please please please please PLEASE RE-RELEASE THIS
At one time I had three copies of this because I was afraid of what has now happened:I cannot find any of them and I cannot afford to buy a new copy at the rarity/collector's price.

For years it was part of my Christmas ritual. And because I had the good fortune to actually see him perform this one-man show live I was able to recall some of the visuals that went with the voices.

But the voice alone is more than enough, since the stage show used minimal props and the characters were mostly created by shadings of tone and accent and pronunciation and pacing.

If you have a good imagination, I promise you will come to find this the most compelling retelling of the great Dickens story you have ever experienced.

Sir Patrick is an extraordinary talent, and those who only know him from STNG should honor his magnificent stage career by demanding that this audio CD be remastered and released!PLEASE!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars God bless us, everyone!
Patrick Stewart performed Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol on stage as a one man show for several years during the holiday season. To my regret, I never saw that show. But he did record an audio version of the show, which is what we have here.I'm sure it's not as enjoyable as seeing Stewart performing live in person, but it's great in it's own right. There are some abridgements, but unless you have the book memorized, you aren't likely to notice.Stewart does different voices for different characters, including the women and children. It's a virtuoso performance which will be enjoyed by all. ... In this studio recording based on those performances, Stewartis in rare form, using his considerable range of voices to play allroles, from the Ghost of Christmas past to Tiny Tim. 5-0 out of 5 stars The best
My family and I have loved this beloved Christmas story for years. When we first heard Patrick Stewart perform this one man show we were hooked. He does a fabulous job with each character, making the story come to life for us. We love it so much that we have been giving it out as Christmas gifts to friends and family.

Everyone has their favorite version of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol.Make this dramatic retelling yours. At about 2 hours, its perfect for listening in the car while running around during the holidays or on your MP3 player while putting up Christmas lights.I plan on listening to it every year from now on.Patrick Stewart gives voice to every character, including the narration, and gives the kind of performance which I have come to expect from an actor of his immense talents.

Two of my most favorite things --- Patrick Stewart and A Christmas Carol. Now I get both in one! This CD was a remarkable rendition of A Christmas Carol.Given Patrick Stewart's English accent, it made it even better.

What can one say about this that isn't already known?Everyone knows the story of A Christmas Carol so there is no need to restate what it is about. If you have ever seen an episode of "Star Trek - Enterprise", you know what the voice of Patrick Stewart sounds like. So, I will only say imagine the English setting of the story and the English voice of Mr. Stewart and you have one of the best tellings of this story I have ever heard.

2-0 out of 5 stars Just the facts - too bad
I'm an avid Civil War reader - settling onto almost any book about the era - until I ran into this one.I've never read a more bland accounting of one of America's most charismatic and brilliant military leaders. The author merely recounts a few battles, the 31st Arkansas marched here, the 4th Tennessee moved in next to the Arkansas,,,,,,..... the Federals charged and won the day.....about as dreary and unexciting as that. What a disappointment when one is looking for WHY Patrick Cleburne was labeled "The Stonewall Jackson of the West".I never really found the answer in the book.I ended up looking for any excuse to put the book down forever - I'm one of thosestupid "Have to Read It to the End" goofballs - my bad luck here. So dedicated am I to the Civil War, I read on until Cleburne's death.I would donate it to the local library (as a bad joke because Patrick Cleburne biographies are very difficult to find on the West Coast), but I'm too honorable to ruin someone else's day.

I hope that I never have the ill-luck to pick up another book as dreary and devoid of purpose as this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tribute to Greatness
This is without doubt the best book I have read on this remarkable man.

Patrick Cleburne was by any fair estimate one of the finest generals on either side in the War Between the States.A brilliant, bold and courageous leader, he fearlessly led his army into numerous impossible situations and won the day.Despite this, his outspokeness and quarrel with a superior kept him from well-deserved promotion and led to his receiving assignments so difficult that they ultimately led to his death in battle.

As this well-researched book describes, Cleburne was a natural leader that men would follow. He was also a very realistic thinker, leading him to suggest that the CSA recruit slaves into the army with the promise of freedom after the war was won.It was too early for this idea to be well received, but had he been heeded the his nation may not have been defeated.

Sadly, as the title of this book implies, Patrick Cleburne is rarely heard of today. This is a great loss for today's students of the war because he was certainly a true hero.

2-0 out of 5 stars Invisible Hero Comes to Life in Print
Bruce Stewart's recent biography of Patrick Cleburne provides some fascinating insights into his subject. The author obviously adores his subject, but is not blind to the Arkansas general's mistakes. His bibiliography is strong, and contains all of the available biographies on the "Stonewall of the West."The book concentrates on General Cleburne's military career, without providing enough background to reveal the development of this man's personality. It also has a few inaccuracies, especially regarding the Battle of Richmond, Ky., where I occasionally guide.

Of particular interest to Cleburne devotees will be the anecdotes about the Irishman's life. While the book is well written and an easy read, I would like for the author to have spent more time talking about Patrick Cleburne's sense of responsibility, and his use of tactics learned from the Duke of Wellington. The author does a particularly fine job in dealing with General Cleburne's enigma at Spring Hill, and his Second Memorial. How sad that such men are to be lost to the foolish decision of a man who had lost his temper, in addition to his arm and leg.

Product Description
Over the last several decades, academic discourse on racial inequality has focused primarily on political and social issues with significantly less attention on the complex interplay between race and economics. African Americans in the U.S. Economy represents a contribution to recent scholarship that seeks to lessen this imbalance. This book builds upon, and significantly extends, the principles, terminology, and methods of standard economics and black political economy. Influenced by path-breaking studies presented in several scholarly economic journals, this volume is designed to provide a political-economic analysis of the past and present economic status of African Americans. The chapters in this volume represent the work of some of the nation's most distinguished scholars on the various topics presented. The individual chapters cover several well-defined areas, including black employment and unemployment, labor market discrimination, black entrepreneurship, racial economic inequality, urban revitalization, and black economic development. The book is written in a style free of the technical jargon that characterizes most economics textbooks. While the book is methodologically sophisticated, it is accessible to a wide range of students and the general public and will appeal to academicians and practitioners alike. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent collection of articles on black political economy
This new volume of essays on the emerging field of African American political economy is both provocative and remarkably comprehensive. It features articles by many of the leading thinkers in the field, such as Manning Marable, William Darity, Thomas Boston, Richard America, Cecilia Conrad, Patrick Mason and James Stewart (the last three are also among the book's editors). The book will make an excellent text for courses in political economy, history, sociology and economics which focus on the African American experience, as well as more general courses which seek a solid historical and theoretical analysis. The book was also selected as one of Choice magazine's Outstanding Academic Titles for 2005.

As the preface notes, the book is premised on two basic themes: first, the idea that race matters.Second, the idea that history matters.A reader outside the field of economics may be excused for wondering why these commonsense ideas could possibly be considered provocative. The simple answer is that most of the economics profession views both race and history as unimportant; race is seen as a temporary effect of market power, which perfect competition will eliminate, while history is seen as secondary to theory.A major theme of the book is the many shortcomings of this view.

The book is divided into nine sections, which take the reader through a rich set of theoretical and historical arguments, providing a deep context for understanding the current economic situation for the African American community.Early sections focus on the development of the `black labor force', discussing slavery, sharecropping, the uneven economic development of Europe and Africa, and the complex relationship between organized labor and African Americans.

The book is an extremely important attempt to grapple with the problem of race in the U.S. today, in all its complexity. It is recommended to all serious students of social theory. ... Read more

Product Description
In 1947, the University of California and Yale University baseball teams took the field in Kalamazoo, Michigan, to play the first-ever NCAA Division I College World Series. It was a two-day, three-game Series with an attendance of less than 4,000. Today, it is a weeklong Series held in Omaha, Nebraska, with eight teams, tens of thousands of fans and millions more watching on television.

This book covers each College World Series from the first game in 1947 through the 2003 Series, between Rice and Stanford universities. The authors devote a chapter to each decade, and then cover each game of each Series. They also provide information on standout players’ careers (in baseball and other professions) after playing in the College World Series. NCAA Division II and III teams are also covered, and the appendix features short profiles of great college coaches. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent stories about a world
I would recommend this book to anyone who wonders if there is "life" after 60 (or even 40). The authors' passion for life and adventure is heard in the book's stories. There is a clear and united voice even though the book's chapters are alternately written by differing points-of-views, one from the artist (Catharine) and the other from the scientist (Patrick). Gives young people a perspective on life beyond a career.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comments on "At Sea At Sixty: Reflections ...
This is a thought provoking and insightful book by a well educated professional couple. Yet one feels to be traveling with them. Gracefully blending vivid descriptions of their daily experiences on an educational cruise around the world with comments relating to human nature, culture and religion, this is a most delightful book to read and think about. With intolerance (or worse) so much in the news, reading this book is a refreshing reminder that "we are all one" to The Other.

5-0 out of 5 stars Around the World with Ying and Yang
This is a highly readable book which will make you laugh, make youthink, challenge your assumptions about the world, and reflect about thevalue of travelling to other cultures. Pat and Catharine, the engineer andthe artist, have done something most unusual. They wisely have writtenchapters alternately using their own voices...describing then reflectingupon the meaning of the people ,places and cultures they encounter on their"Semester at Sea" journey with hundreds of undergraduates. Theyand about 50 other "older" students join the journey and provideseasoning for the whole trip.P and C complement each other superbly, a yingand a yang completing the circle. This is one of the most interesting, thoughtful, provocative, insightful and fun books I have read in decades.Ifyou are worried about aging, this book is the perfect antidote. I wouldn'tface a typhoon and 45 foot waves but I am sure glad the Roaches did!

4-0 out of 5 stars More than an excellent travelogue
"At Sea at Sixty" is more than an excellent travelogue. It represents a unique view of several cultures found at different ports around the world as seen by a husband/wife team of experienced travelers. Though the authors share essentially the same American cultural values, their viewpoints illustrate their quite different personalities. As a malereader, I was gratified to read Patrick's blunt (and often funny)impressions of what he saw.As a hopeless philosopher, I enjoyedCatharine's constant questioning as to the meaning of what she saw.It wasrefreshing to read two impressions simultaneously of what were essentiallythe same impressions.

When I finished this book, I felt that I had beenon an around the world voyage myself. I felt educated.I learned anew thatAmericans are a very small minority on this planet.

As a footnote, I mustsay that I received a benefit which the authors may not have fullyintended.I received a clear image of a successful marriage.I saw verydifferent people who had obviously learned how to let each other exult intheir own personality, while finding and traveling common ground.I sawmutual respect.Marvelous. ... Yet little is known about the practices, implications and challenges of tourism in remote polar seas. Climate change is dramatically altering the impact and potential for such forms of tourism. Recent incidents, such as the sinking of one cruise ship and the grounding of two other cruise vessels in the Antarctic Peninsula in 2007, highlight the need for a critical examination of the implications of polar cruise tourism.

A specific critical study of polar cruise tourism is therefore timely. The industry has moved beyond its infancy, and is now entering a maturing phase with increased numbers and types of vessels, more demanding routes, and more regular and predictable patterns of activity. A range of factors is likely to support this maturing phase, including increasing tourist demand for travel to remote places, overall popularity of cruising worldwide, more sophisticated promotional activities by tour agencies, increasing awareness at the political and community levels about the benefits and costs of cruise tourism, and changing ice regimes in the polar regions. The increase in cruise activities, and the associated risks of accidents, as well as the potential and actual impacts of the large numbers of tourists in the polar regions bring with it management challenges for sustainable use of these regions. This book discusses critically the issues around environmental and social sustainability of the cruise industry in Polar Regions. Authors from Canada, USA, Europe, Australia and New Zealand are experts in their respective fields and take an innovative, critical and, at times, controversial approach to the subject. ... "The Sonnets are as important a part of Shakespeare'slecacy as his Plays. They are filled with thoughts and emotions all ofus can recognize: desire, disappointment, jealousy, love, andforgiveness. To speak his Sonnets, Shakespeare created a character, aPoet, who gives voice to the feelings and observations reflected ineach poem. We thought it appropriate to gather together a group ofactors who could bring this Poet to life. We have set out t read theSonnets in Shakespeare's language, in such a manner that allows therelevancy and originality of each poem to shine through." 4-0 out of 5 stars A befitting tribute to The Bard of Avon...
The sonnet is one among the many forms of poetry. It is a difficult form of verse with a FIXED rhyme scheme. The other trivia about writing it is that the verse should be 14 lines long. 154 sonnets written by Shakespeare have been read/recorded in this collection. There are actually two cd's in the box - the first cd contains sonnets 1 through 75 and the second, sonnets 76 through 154. The accompanying book of sonnets is a plus - it saves our time spent in scurrying to locate the sonnet being read next, since all the sonnets are in one place, in the order that they are being read. The book also has two indexes of the sonnets: 1. Track number / First line of sonnet/ Artist and 2. First line of sonnet / Track number / Artist

Since the rhyming scheme is fixed (abab bcbd cdcd ee), listening to them all at a time can sometimes make it sound monotonous, but that issue has been fixed in this audio book, by varying the tone, voice, and reader. When it comes to reading The Bard's works on an audio CD, who can do it better than experienced and well known thespians and theatre personalities who have made a mark in their own style? Here is the list of personalities who have read the sonnets for us:
1. Gerry Bammon
2. Roberta Bella
3. Claire Bloom
4. Lindsay Crouse
5. Ossie Davis
6. Ruby Dee
7. Brian Dennehy
8. Denise Dumont
9. Jill Gascoin
10. Amy Irving
11. Anne Jackson
12. Jordan Lage
13. Brian Stokes Mitchell
14. Alfred Molina
15. Al Pacino
16. Natasha Richardson
17. Patric Stewart
18. Allyson Tucker
19. Kathleen Turner (who, along with Charline Spektor, is also the producer for this audio-collection)
20. Eli Wallach
21. Fritz Weaver

Some of the sonnets have been rendered by more than one person, and both of them have been published in this cd, since both of them are good to listen. There was no point in time while I listened to the CD that I felt bored. In fact, some of them have been rendered so well that I wanted to listen to them again, just for the rendition.

For those who are interested in Shakespeare, this is an important addition to their collection. Some of the sonnets therein are well known ("Let me not to the marriage of true minds/Admit impediments.../If this be error and upon me proved/I never writ, nor no man ever loved"), and there are so many others to be read for the first time. Some of them bring vivid imagery, even if they are unknown ("Thus in his cheek the map of days outworn"), whereas others have wonderful metaphors ("So are you to my thoughts as food to life,/or as sweet-season'd showers are to the ground;"). Almost all of them are treasure houses of wisdom (remember, Shakespeare was 45 when they were published, and he had lived life then).

Now, coming to majors who have to read the sonnets for their academic purposes - it is well known that it helps if we can quote lines from the sonnets amidst our theory answers; to that end, listening to the cd before, after or while reading the sonnet in print helps memorizing the lesson easier - this is my experience.

Here is a fantastic audio-book that reminds me why I was so entranced by literature while I was studying. A good gift for literature oriented people to add to their collection.
