Product Description
Based upon a real-life experience, THE JUMBO STING reveals how BritAir tried to break President Reagan's embargo on Libya and sell two new Boeing 747 Jumbo Jets to Colonel Gaddafi. This incredible story follows a tenuous trail from Heathrow's Imperial Way to Omar Mukhtar Avenue in Tripoli via Wichita, Kansas, the East End of London, an Arab-English magazine, Swiss banks and bogus Italian and Algerian companies. THE JUMBO STING operation involves City Gents, Diplomats, Bankers, Arms Dealers, Girl Soldiers, Deportations, Death threats and unexplained accidents. It involves the CIA, MI5, Scotland Yard, the Libyan Mukhabarat and the Green Nuns, Gaddafi's elite all-female bodyguard. Above all, THE JUMBO STING is a thrilling story of deals, deceptions, mayhem and murder and above all, millions of dollars. FACT or FICTION?... You be the judge! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent Book, Especially for the Low Price
To cut to the chase, this book has some interesting pictures and covers every song by the Police and into Sting's solo career up to _Ten Summoner's Tales_. Some photos are in color, but most are in b/w. Each section describes another album, when the album was released, what songs you'll find on it and what kind of reviews it received. The main thing I disliked about this book was the frequent commentary of the author regarding the meaning of songs. Sometimes we agreed, sometimes we didn't, but I would have been happier with more Sting quotes, more facts and less editorializing by the author. All things considered though, the affordable price makes this title worth buying.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Perfect Companion Piece
Omnibus Press's CD size 'complete guides' are very popular and this book is a belated but welcome addition to the series. Penned by Chris Welch, an ex Melody Maker journalist this compact book includes a brief history and examines each song on each album including Message in a Box, and Sting's solo releases. There are also plenty of photographs including several in colour. The narrative for each track is, understandably, coloured by the author's view and it's obvious that he doesn't rate Stewart and Andy's songwriting talents too highly, but this aside the book is inexpensive and generally very good (and it fits perfectly next to your Police and Sting CD's!) and is excellent value for money. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Can Lyrics And Art Become As One?
This book was first released in 1991, as a part of the big lavish box that was called: "Sting ~ Acoustic Live In Newcastle."Inside that box was a CD of a concert in Newcastle, England. My very favorite snippet of my favorite batch of live Sting recordings.

Roberto Gligorov, designed this wonderful book, wrapping his art around Sting's great lyrics so we are now able to have fantasic 'visions' of Sting's words presented for our eyes.

Twenty five songs are featured here, and they are expanded with fine visuals into something even more unique. With pen & ink, watercolors, oils, Photographs and early computer images, {1991, the Stone-Age for that medium!} these words by Sting, are transformed and they increase in scope and color.

The only other book of this sort that I have come across was about The Beatles, {if you have found other rock and pop artists that have been presented in this fashion, please leave me a comment!} This book showcases a great new way to observe what music can be for us, the listener.

If you ever wondered just what was going on at the: "Island of Souls" or why: "We Work The Black Seam Together." Here in this book, is the place to bring it more into or out-of focus. Art, IS only what you perceive, within itself.

This book is like jumping into the deep end of the pool for some, for others they may find these waters cool and refreshing. These visuals are an opinion, we may agree or disagree as much as we like, but if we are so lucky, we may find something new and refreshing within.
Sting, likes this book plenty, and so do I, art is cool and fun sometimes!

3-0 out of 5 stars Wings, Stings and Wriggly Things
A good additional reference for your children to explore in addition to their regular curriculum/lessons.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wings, Stings and Wriggly Things (SuperSmarts)
ISBN 0763600369 - Bugs are very cool. As it happens, books are pretty cool, too. Put them together and you get... squished bugs! No, really, you get an educational book about bugs that boys, in particular, will enjoy.

Butterflies, snails, bees, worms, dragonflies, spiders, grasshoppers and crickets, ants and beetles are all topics of their own sections. Each section is about 2 pages, although there are a couple fold-out pages. The book includes some basic facts, a little bit of the "yuck" factor, an index and some quiz questions (with the answers in the back).

Author Martin Jenkins manages to walk the line between "ew, bugs" and "cool, bugs" pretty well. The information is interesting and, even when it's a little gross, fascinating. Illustrations by Sandra Doyle, Clive Pritchard, and Ian Thompson really make the book come alive. Although the images are slightly cartoon-ish, they're fairly realistic and, in a non-fiction book, that matters a lot. The index is a nice tool and not too common in children's books. The quiz questions are printed on the borders of the pages and are a little too easy to miss and the answers aren't in the text, which is a bit odd. Still, educational and likely to appeal to boys (who are generally less into books than girls) are two things that carry a lot of weight for me!

5-0 out of 5 stars Internal disputes affecting foreign policies?
This book is GREAT!!!

It shows how three National Governments define their foreign policies working from/amongst/within their internal disputes. The 3 nations involved are Argentina, Great Britain and the United States. The issue at stake is the Argentine claim, and 2nd April 1982 take-over, of the Malvinas (for Great Britain: Falkland) Islands. I guess it could be just anything else...

So it goes:
1) In the US: Haig vs Weinberger
2) In the UK: Nott vs Thatcher
3) In Argentina: Galtieri vs Viola

The books even reveals how Argentina lost the islands because of the steps taken by General Viola (de facto president ousted byGeneral Galtieri) to make sure that the take-over was anticipated, which in turn gave the UK the time-window they needed (badly) to perform the re-taking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Study
This is a fascinating work of detailed scholarship.Thornton has put together a compelling retelling of the War, and by giving us hitherto undisclosed details as to the political infighting within Argentina, theUnited Kingdom and the United States he has managed to give meaning to somany unanswered questions which other writers simply dismiss as being'illogical' or 'unexplicable' behaviour.Piecing together a wide web ofinter-related intrigue, Thornton has put the entire conflict into a wholenew light.Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Falklands Sting is worthy of praise.
Richard Thornton's book is an important study for understanding the diplomatic machinations of the Cold War era in general and the Reagan-Thatcher partnership within it in particular.Hitherto, the British-Argentine conflict has been treated either as a sideshow in the history of international relations or as a symbolic reassertion of British power in what seemed to be its imperial sunset.Thornton's approach is entirely new and original, setting the conflict sqaurely where it belongs in the chronology of Cold War history. With substantial support the author argues that the conflict was a sting designed to divest Argentina of its military government and nuclear weapons program (a little-known fact, the details of which are only recently being elaborating) while strenghthening America's strategic relationship with Thatcher's Britain.Thornton gives great care to relate the nature of the divisions existing within the various (American, British, Argentine) leaderships and how they influenced the outcome of the war.Particularly relevant to Cold War students is his treatment of the machinations behind Thatcher's ability to make a necessary war and Reagan's ability to support her. Thornton exposes the attempts of Alexander Haig and the "wet" foreign ministers Lord Carrington and Francis Pym to sideline the military solution, secure Thatcher's political defeat, and implement a renewed detente relationship with the Soviet Union. The Reagan-Thatcher defeat of the detente cabal is of crucial importance to understanding the origins of the war and the place of its outcome in Reagan's strategy of renewed containment. Barring a few factual errors of the minor sort, Thornton's analysis is a true example of what American scholarship of the Cold War should be.It is a proud refutation of the left-wing view that international relations are simplistic or irrelevant and that the broad social trend is what should concern historians most. ... Genre: Erotic Paranormal

Snooping is one helluva dirty business, and no one knows that better than down-on-his-luck P.I. Daniel Murphy. But with baseball-wielding loan sharks after him and his kneecaps on the line, this South Boston tough has no choice but to deliver the goods on a high-paying sex sting. Too bad he's one of the players involved.

To collect the endgame bonus, all Dan has to do is videotape the target, Thérèse Walsh, cheating on her boyfriend.

With him.

That's right. He's supposed to pump his ass like some porn star in a blue film with a woman he doesn't even know. Hey, maybe after the shag, they'll get better acquainted.

Terry Walsh is a psychic who "interprets" imperfections that mysteriously appear in her knitted creations. When Daniel Murphy seeks shelter from a freak snowstorm in her little knitting shop, she doesn't understand her immediate and overwhelming reaction to the former Boston Police Department cop--

Nothing new there.

Though she can see into the future of others, Terry rarely understands her own motivations. Except, this time, in one area, anyway, her motivations are pinging loud and clear. Too bad, her motivations are pinging about Dan Murphy. And the one area they're pinging about is sex…

Too bad, he's a little bit vanilla and she's a lot BDSM. Yep, SEX STINGs.

Product Description
"Having been a songwriter most of my life, condensing my ideas and emotions into short rhyming couplets and setting them to music, I had never really considered writing a book, but upon arriving at the reflective age of fifty,I found myself drawn, for the first time, to write long passages that were as stimulating and intriguing to me as any songwriting I had ever done. And so 'Broken Music' began to take shape. It is a book about the early part of my life, from childhood through adolescence, right up to the eve of my success with the Police. It is a story very few people know. I had no interest in writing a traditional autobiographical recitation of everything that's ever happened to me. Instead I was drawn to exploring specific moments, certain people and relationships, and particular events which still resonate powerfully for me as I try to understand the child I was, and the man I became." This biography gets straight to the heart of the man behind the public image, revealing aspects of his life that are seldom glimpsed in the media, his difficult relationship with actress Trudi Styler, and his acting pursuits. 1-0 out of 5 stars HE BASES THESE STORIES ON HEAR SAY
Wensley Clarkson, although an author of many books, hacks his way through this so called biography of Sting. He bases most of his stories on hear say and some are just plain old supposition. I found it very unsatisfying and a lot of untrue stories. Sting has been pretty up front about his life, and will admit to a lot of mistakes. But if you want a real Biography on Sting read Broken Music. It is sheer poetry and a very satisfying book about the man from the man. Leave Wensley Clarksons book alone. He had never met Sting when he wrote this book. Don't you think you should get some confirmation from the horses mouth first. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended
Jungle Stories is a a book co-written by Sting and photographer JeanPierre Dutilleux about their visits to the Amazon rainforest, firstly in1987 (when he was accompanied by Trudie Styler), and later in 1989 (whentrying to get President Sarney to agree to the demarcation of the XinguNational Park). Dutilleux was responsible for introducing Sting to theproblems being faced by the Amazonian indians and for introducing him toChief Raoni. The book features many superb colour photographs of therainforest and the damage being done by logging and mining companies, butespecially of the mysterious and proud Indian tribes. Sting introduces usto several larger than life characters in his contributions. His writing isgood - written in short, snappy, journal fashion, serious without beingoverly so, and punctuated with flashes of humour. His admiration for theIndians shines through the book, and Dutilleux's excellent photographs -many of Sting - set this book off marvellously. Highly recommended. ... Read more

Product Description

Touted by fans for his charisma and scorned by critics for his egomania, Sting is one of the most commercially successful and most controversial rock artists performing today. A schoolteacher from Newcastle, Sting soared to international fame and the top of the seventies rock charts with The Police, one of the most popular bands on the planet. After the band folded, he emerged as a solo start with hit singles, critically acclaimed albums, worldwide sell-out tours, and a host of Grammys. Yet Sting's career has been turbulent — an accomplished jazz bassist and vastly talented musician, he has been charged with playing punk and reggae for careerist convenience. He has been accused of single-handedly breaking up The Police at the peak of its rock band powers. In this updated edition of the first full-length biography of Sting, Christopher Sandford examines the substance behind the cliché: the creative disagreements — and physical violence — among The Police; the musical intelligence that produced such albums as Nothing Like the Sun and Ten Summoner's Tales; Sting's ecological campaigning and financial dealings; and his numerous sexual entanglements. Here is Sting, the legend, the man, the political activist, the performer who continues to fascinate the world.

1-0 out of 5 stars This is really bad
It's just awful. There is no way that Sting is this boring. The author is nothing more than a stalker/researcher.Sting declined to be interviewed for this book, so what you have is a bio about a guy who doesn't want you to write about him who gave absolutely no input.

While the Andy Partridge comments are great, it ends there.Anybody can pull quotes from magazine interviews and publish them. This book offers nothing really other than to paint an unflattering picture (From a great distance!) of a talented boring narcissist who got lucky.

Where's the drama, debauchery and psycho in fighting within The Police and his other bands? You won't find it here.

The author is also redundant. He repeats himself to fill out this weak rag and gives no insight to Sting's creative process.Rainforests, benefits, movie premieres, Yoga, droll quips, hanging out at the mansion...

B...O...R...I...N...G!

If you want some good Police dirt I recommend Andy Summer's book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Blindingly, appallingly stupid
Not only is this the worst biography I've ever read, it's the worst book I've ever read. That a grub street hack like Sandford gets published borders on criminal. There is nothing presented here that one couldn't find by reading a few archived magazine articles and watching "Bring on the Night."The only real research Sandford presents is on Sting's finances, and he trots out balances and tax info to impress us ad absurdum. The narrative jumps ahead and falls behind, and often opinions expressed contradict each other mere sentences apart.Nowhere is Sandford more at sea than we he is playing amateur music critic. The only post-Police album that doesn't receive constant derision is the grossly over-rated "Ten Summoner's Tales," which contains the only slow song Sandford seems to tolerate, "Fields of Gold."We get the point. If it doesn't have a "riff," "hook," or beat (watchwords of the musically illiterate trying to come off as knowledgeable), Sandford slams it with over-the-top negativity.Random "huh?" moments abound:"I Hung my Head" cribbed the plot-line of "I Shot the Sheriff" (the only thing they share is a shooting); "When We Dance" has a "touchy" chorus; Sandford thinks turtles are crustaceans, etc. etc. etc.
A total waste.Don't buy this book. ... Read more
