5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Novel I've Read Since "The Big Picture," by Douglas Kennedy
Note: Thanks for your "helpful votes," and please remember that a short review is not a bad review if it leads you to a terrific novel.

This is the best novel I've read since Douglas Kennedy's "The Big Picture."

A seven-year-old girl disappears, and twenty years later her mentally ill brother remembers what happened.

Don't read the longer reviews until after you read the book because it might take the edge off the story. I loved this book. The story is told in the first person, but the author uses an ingenious device to get into the heads of the other characters.

I couldn't stop reading. Highly recommended, and if you haven't read "The Big Picture," then do so. You are in for a treat with either of these two novels.

4-0 out of 5 stars IT IS NOW ALL COMING TOGETHER...
This is a worthy debut novel of suspense. The plot revolves around the disappearance of a seven year old girl from her home in a suburb of New York City some twenty odd years ago. Fiona May Airie was last seen at a house party that her parents, Hannah and Jim, had thrown. Also at the party were her two older brothers, nine year old Pilot and fourteen year old Eric. The police were never able to solve the circumstances of her disappearance, and her body was never found. Now, years later, her disappearance still haunts this family.

The parents are now divorced. The father is living with his girlfriend in Florida. The mother is living alone in the very same house from which Fiona disappeared, suffering from visual disturbances. The older son, Eric, is a prominent neurosurgeon. The younger one, Pilot, is a drifter, psychologically fragile since the disappearance of his sister. Now in his late twenties, he appears to have suffered a total mental breakdown. He is foundwandering in the woods in a seemingly psychotic state and is admitted into a hospital where his brother is a consulting physician. Pilot becomes the patient of psychotherapist Katherine DeQuincey-Joy, a woman who is battling her own demons. Against her better judgment, she enters in a relationship with her patient's brother, becoming his lover, only to find herself torn between the two.

The story is predominantly viewed through the eyes of Pilot, who seems almost omniscient. He reveals the story of a family torn apart by tragedy, and it seems that Pilot holds the key to unlocking the mystery surrounding Fiona's disappearance all those years ago. The only problem is that the solution may be more than the family can bear knowing.

Well-written, with a strong plot and some original twists in the tale, this book is sure to hold the reader's interest until the final page is turned.Although the book goes back and forth between past and present and also changes its voice at times, causing some confusion for the reader, this is a small price to pay, as the story is so intriguing. Those who enjoy psychological thrillers and novels of suspense are sure to derive much enjoyment from this chilling and absorbing book.

4-0 out of 5 stars This was a good one
This is the story of Pilot Airie, omniscient schizophrenic, who is trying to piece together his memories of the events surrounding the disappearance of his six year old sister, when he was a child.

Pilot is an unemployed loner with a history of mental instability, his older brother Eric is a brilliant neurosurgeon.Their parents divorced after his sister Fiona's disappearance.Their father left to fly planes in Florida and their mother still lives in the same house they lived in when Fiona went missing. She seems to be going blind and then she starts seeing images of Fiona as she looked when she disappeared.

The entire story is told from Pilot's perspective but given the state of his mental health you are never sure if what he's telling you is the truth or not.So it keeps you guessing at what the truth is and trying to figure out who to believe.

I felt that there were a few inconsistencies in the narration. At the end of the book a portion of the story is told from Eric's and then Fiona's point of view. It's a departure from the rest of the book but I thought that it made the story more suspenseful.

I really enjoyed this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Old tale, very new voice
A psychotherapist finds herself torn between a handsome doctor and his brother who is her schizophrenic patient. The two brothers have locked away secrets of a family tragedy from long past- their sister's strange disappearance.Someone in the family was responsible, someone who will kill again to keep his or her secret.Katherine De Quincy-Joy finds herself in the crossfire and tries desperately to uncover the truth before it buries her, too.
I picked this up because I was in the mood for escapism fluff. And, from the cover, this looked like brain candy.Boy, was I wrong! This was a very good, mind scratching yarn.It was VERY hard to get fully into because it was narrated by a very strange voice- one of a schizophrenic. You could never tell what was reality and what was delusion. The story unravels and ravels simultaneously, and you find yourself becoming hooked.Old story told in a very original way!

5-0 out of 5 stars Raveling
Two brothers, Eric and Pilot, grew up together but their lives took two very different paths. Eric became a successful doctor, while Pilot ended up unemployed and a diagnosed schizophrenic. After a particular nasty psychotic break, Pilot ends up in the hospital and claims to have information about the disappearance of his sister many years ago. Is there any truth in what Pilot has to say, or is it a delusion?

The story is told in the first person, through the perspective of Pilot. What makes this a bit different is that Pilot it omniscient, so we are still privy to what's going on with other characters. I found this a bit strange at first, but it didn't take me long to get used to it.

The whole issue of Pilot's sanity is fascinating, and it's dealt with in a real and interesting manner. The mystery is compelling, and the characters are well-developed. This an original novel that shouldn't be missed. ... Read more

A delightful story as relevant today as it was when Noel Coward first wrote it and had it performed in London.
CLM

4-0 out of 5 stars "Do you think they know they are mad?"
Written when Coward was only twenty-four, and produced shortly after, in 1925, Hay Fever is a broad, manic farce which takes place in the country house of a self-absorbed, artistic family. The Blisses, each of whom is creative and spontaneous, ignore the stultifying conventions of society--Judith, an extravagant stage actress, who pursues her own whims whenever it pleases her; her husband David, an author, who enjoys his own spotlight and camp-followers; and their adult children, Simon and Sorel. When Sorel announces that she has invited a weekend guest and would like to be able to use "the Japanese room," she quickly discovers that each of the other family members has also invited a guest for "the Japanese room."

In the course of the weekend, all the guests--conventional people attracted by the exciting lives these non-conformists have created for themselves--find themselves at the mercy of their more confident and assertive hosts.Guests who arrive thinking themselves in love with one person find themselves unexpectedly engaged to marry someone else.No one listens to them, no one recognizes them as individuals, and no one cares about their dashed expectations. As the Bliss family controls the activity during the weekend, the farce borders on absurdity.Outrageous scenes and emotional confrontations, part of their "normal" lives, prove too much for their guests.

The fast-paced interaction one sees on stage constitutes the only "plot," and there are no background stories to add complexity. What you see is obvious--what Coward has intended you to see. Far less subtle than some of his later work and lacking the cynicism and clever repartee for which Coward later became known, the play nevertheless incorporates many of Coward's trademark themes--the sense of entitlement by artists (some of which, he hints, is because they really are superior), their flamboyant behavior, the casual attitudes toward marriage and sex, their egotism and insensitivity to "ordinary" people, along with their sense of fun as they pursue their own pleasure.

These themes are all set into sharp relief by the behavior and attitudes of the guests, who gain no audience sympathy for their predicaments because they are decidedly dull.Though some believe that this is one of Coward's best plays, others will prefer the clever repartee, wit, and irony of the later plays, which tend to have a more intimate focus and smaller cast of characters.n Mary Whipple

5-0 out of 5 stars Noel Coward's First Great Comic Success
Noel Coward (1899-1973) is best recalled for his sparkling yet acid-etched comedies, and the 1925 HAY FEVER is among the best, easily ranking alongside such titles as BLITHE SPIRIT, DESIGN FOR LIVING, and PRIVATE LIVES.Among his earlier successes, Coward received inspiration for the play when he visited the home of the great American actress Laurelette Taylor--and found both her and her family shockingly eccentric in an unexpectedly theatrical way.

Unlike most other Coward scripts, HAY FEVER relies less on plot and Coward's talent for sharp wit than it does upon character.Judith, directly based on Laurelette Taylor, is the lynchpin of the piece: recently retired from the stage, she is an intensely theatrical woman who enjoys dramatizing her life. She has invited a much younger man to be a weekend guest, never dreaming that her husband David, son Simon, and daughter Sorrel have each invited a guest as well.

The four guests soon discover that the maid is down with a toothache, there aren't enough rooms, and there is scarcely enough food to go around. To make matters worse, Judith plays every scene that presents itself. It is a habit in which she is not alone; her novelist husband and their two children are every bit as adept at theatrical hysteria as she, and before the weekend concludes the guests are treated to astonshing exhibitions that alternately annoy, confuse, and frighten them out of their wits.

Plays are written to be performed, not read, and HAY FEVER is a good example of the difficulties that can arise when a non-theatre person tries to visualize how it would be on the stage. On the page, it reads as clever and amusing, but only mildly so; on the stage, however, it is easily one of the most hilarious comedies of the 20th Century.Recommended for those who have the imagination required!

2-0 out of 5 stars Hay Fever
I was not aware that this was a live stage play.It was hard to follow on the audio tape. This was not really a 'story' being told. You really had to visualize who the characters were and what they were doing. This is not good for an audio book content.
I am an avid audio book listener.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great edition - delightful and charming!
Great edition - delightful and charming! This is a funny play!!!I'm nuts about Wilde, and have the good fortune to watch this play nearby where I live, it reminded me to read it again, and I ordered this version from Amazon as part of a larger Wilde order, (I think I bought all his works!).

There is no sense writing about this fantastic play - its so funny, the satire is right on the mark, the wit still as fresh today as it was when first written, I just wanted to say that this is a very good edition, and I especially enjoyed the cover photo of Wilde looking the way we all remember him.

PS if you have the chance see his grave stone in Paris.Beautiful Art Deco!

5-0 out of 5 stars Pefect Edition!
I'm not going to add much in the review sense, just mention to those who were unhappy with their kindle book, that is is the real, full, hard copy, and a beautiful edition it is!

Wilde is wonderful, and this is one of his best plays.I've seen it a few times, but never tire of reading it. The wit, the barbs, are timeless!

Enjoy!

1-0 out of 5 stars Kindle version is 5 pages long; don't bother
As much as it pains me to give a Wilde play one star, it had to be done. The version I downloaded (and I tried twice) is only 5 pages long, and ends immediately after the cast of characters.

Melodramatics from Lady Windermere. Mrs. Erlynne and Lord Windermere meeting but incomprehensibly deaf to the rumors about them. Yes, this is not Oscar Wilde's best play but, oh, the zingers he does get in, namely through Cecil Graham. Example: "Well, there's nothing in the world like the devotion of a married woman. It's a thing no married man knows anything about." Read it for the pithy lines. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ascend: The Catholic Faith for a New Generation
As a "cradle-born" Catholic, a seasoned (dislike the term "senior") seeker on my own faith journey, I was thoroughly delighted when I obtained my own copy of this tremendous spiritual resource. I want to commend the authors on their marvelous insights that enriched my appreciation for the heritage of my faith tradition.

I have read numerous religious education books, participated in many workshops, and taken advantage of just about every spiritual liturgical enrichment that is offered through the Catholic Church. As a member of our local Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) team, there have been many returning Catholics (and regular church goers) who have said they wanted to know more about their faith. I highly recommend this book will answer this desire for all ages in short "bites" suited for today's fast-paced world.

Well done!

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything a Young Adult wants to know of thier Catholic Faith
Amazing, easy to read book that is written so colorfully and vividly! It moves you out of the stuffy, dark paneled, vestibule and puts you front in center in front of the bright and airy sanctuary that is filled with the warmth of God's love.

This book is amazing and opens your mind and heart to our faith.

Recommended reading for Teens who are preparing for Confirmation, Adults in RCIA, Couples getting married in the Catholic Church and men and women considering a calling in vocations to serve.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ascend - Must Have Catholic reading
"Love, grace and peace to you."

These words open the introduction of"Ascend." This invitation by authors Eric Stoltz and Vince Tomkovicz leads readers into a creative, new book about Catholicism, written with flair. For anyone involved in young adult catechetical efforts or evangelizing ministry, "Ascend" is a must-have item.

This is no heavy theological tome filled with cerebral concepts and words. Ascend is written primarily for young people who want to learn more about the faith and who may need to be stimulated to retain what they read.

"Ascend" is made to be carried around, thumbed through and used as a guide. It is a small but hefty volume with eye-catching graphic design. The cover alone is stunning, with the word "Ascend" floating in a blue sky over office towers in Los Angeles.

The slick look is no gimmick: Even the well-informed will learn something from reading this book. The authors, both permanent deacons from Los Angeles, write in clear, concise language meant for a time-challenged and technology-oriented generation.

"Ascend" opens with some basic information, including a "how to read this book" section. Each chapter topic is complemented by Scripture references, art and graphics. There is liberal use of visual material, such as the Hebrew for many of the words used in our faith practices.

Each chapter also has some sidebar elements such as "profile" and "backstory" that either pose a question or by give essential information.

One profile about Joseph, the husband of Mary, begins by positing that we don't really know all that much about this man. The profile ends with a challenge to consider other "men on the move," trying to provide for their families, urging readers to "think of Joseph the next time you pass that group of men looking for work in the parking lot of the Home Depot." Such spiritual challenges and invitations are all over this book, popping up in clever, creative and meaningful ways.

Numerous questions are also posed throughout the book, along with answers on many topics ranging from evolution to annulment. Featured are familiar Catholics like Ss. Ignatius of Loyola and Catherine of Siena, as well as less familiar ones like Takashi Nagai and Rev. Mychal Judge.

One interesting element were the sections called "In the Media." These address topics such as evolution, annulment, atheism and clerical abuse. Each is discussed in clear terms that are both Catholic and catholic meaning universal in every way.

"Ascend" has the potential to invite, challenge and transform a generation of new Catholics and to invigorate existing but inactive ones. It will also stir those who are a bit older but still hungry for ways to enkindle their communities and themselves. Catholics of all stripes should consider making it a part of their personal or parish libraries.

Product Description

What we know of that unique period in American history labeled the Jazz Age has been defined by F. Scott Fitzgerald's piercing fiction.

His short stories brilliantlyrealize an era both exploding with opportunity and seething with decadence. His prose captures the melancholy lacquered over with merriment, the corruption interlaced with the glamour, all refracted through a spectrum of human lives.

Here, Caedmon has assembled an extraordinary cast of stage and screen stars to bring Fitzgerald's early work to resonant life. His characters (some passionate, some comic, some tragic) take on an extra dimension when interpreted aloud by these fine actors.

This collection both honors and enhances Fitzgerald's already irreplaceable position in American letters. Each return listening will bring even more emotional impact to each story.

Superb fiction, superbly read. Even though this isn't available on CD or download, it's still a great choice. Transfer it to the media of your choice. Fitzgerald is a master, and these stories range from the fantasy of "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" and "A Diamond as Big as the Ritz" to the difficulty of "May Day." The cast of narrators includes some of the best US actors around: Blythe Danner, Parker Posey, Martha Plimpton, Robert Sean Leonard, Campbell Scott, Peter Gallagher, Bill Irwin, Dylan Baker. Each seems to truly enjoy the story being read.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this man's work!
I first became acquainted and fell in love with the work of F.Scott Fitzgerald when I read a hardback copy of The Great Gatsby in my early 20s. Since then, I have read Tender Is The Night and This Side of Paradise, so when I discovered this collection of stories by my literary hero, I floated up to the cieling. My favorites include The Diamond As Big As The Ritz and Bernice Bobs Her Hair, and anyone who has not already been introduced to Fitzgerald, either in English class at school or whilebrowsing in a local bookstore, it's not too late to change yourmind, and it is my sincere hope that you will love this man's work as much as I do!

5-0 out of 5 stars I could listen to this over and over
I was delighted to find out that not only were F. Scott Fitzgerald's short stories being narrated on audio cassette, but that one of the performers was none other than Robert Sean Leonard.Scottie is by far one of my favorite American authors. It takes an incredible talent to condemn the life you live in your literature, and when I think how he strived for excellence but fell victim to society, I can't help but pity him.His writing is so delicious to read as well.He has such wonderful similies and metaphors, and is so descriptive I can taste the wine, feel the rain and see the stars. The Jazz Age is one of my favorite time periods and F. Scott Fitzgerald captures it perfectly. You see the glittering side but then the glitter gets tarnished as it must. What is even better about this audio is that one of the narrators is none other than my favorite actor, Robert Sean Leonard (better known as Neal in Dead Poets Society and Claudio in Much Ado About Nothing among other films). His voice is wonderful to listen to, even if you're not a fan of his acting. It's perfectly clear and flowing and it reminds you of listening to your parents reading you a bedtime story. The tape itself leaves you feeling as if you've been on an emotional rollercoaster. There's a nice beginning, then it peaks with conflict, the resolution, and then the end finishes as calmly as it started.Yet you've gained something from it.Fitzgerald has some incredibly phenomenal themes in his work. The odd part is that I usually don't like getting audio books, but I certainly reccomend this audio of The Stories of F. Scott Fitzgerald"It's worth every penny.

5-0 out of 5 stars AN EXEMPLARY COLLECTION SUPERBLY READ
Surely an icon in the annals of American literature, F. Scott Fitzgerald produced a body of work which epitomized the Roaring Twenties. It has been said that his dominant influences were "aspiration, literature, Princeton, Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald, and alcohol."Nonetheless, his writing possesses an urgency, a bite, unrivaled by his peers.

Collected in this superb audio are nine of his early stories performed by accomplished actors.Broadway/film actress Blythe Danner reads "Bernice Bobs Her Hair," a narrative inspired by a lengthy letter Fitzgerald wrote to his younger sister, Annabel, in which he offered advice on how she could become popular with boys.

"The Jelly-Bean," read by Dylan Baker, takes place in Georgia.Fitzgerald credits his wife for her expertise in helping him write a portion of this tale involving crap shooting, saying "as a Southern girl" she was an expert at this endeavor.

The talented Peter Gallagher reads "Head and Shoulders," the first of Fitzgerald's story to appear in The Saturday Evening Post.

Also found in the collection are "The Diamond As Big As The Ritz," "Dalyrimple Goes Wrong," "The Ice Palace," "Benediction," "The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button," and "May Day."

This is an exemplary combination of memorable prose and oral presentation, a remarkable listening experience. ... Read more

Product Description
Fasten your seat belts–the white-knuckle thrills at Utopia, the world’s most fantastic theme park, escalate to nightmare proportions in this intricately imagined techno-thriller by New York Times bestselling author Lincoln Child.

Rising out of the stony canyons of Nevada, Utopia is a world on the cutting edge of technology. A theme park attracting 65,000 visitors each day, its dazzling array of robots and futuristic holograms make it a worldwide sensation. But ominous mishaps are beginning to disrupt the once flawless technology. A friendly robot goes haywire, causing panic, and a popular roller coaster malfunctions, nearly killing a teenaged rider. Dr. Andrew Warne, the brilliant computer engineer who designed much of the park’s robotics, is summoned from the East Coast to get things back on track.

On the day Warne arrives, however, Utopia is caught in the grip of something far more sinister. A group of ruthless criminals has infiltrated the park’s computerized infrastructure, giving them complete access to all of Utopia’s attractions and systems. Their communication begins with a simple and dire warning: If their demands are met, none of the 65,000 people in the park that day will ever know they were there; if not, chaos will descend, and every man, woman, and child will become a target. As one of the brains behind Utopia, Warne finds himself thrust into a role he never imagined–trying to save the lives of thousands of innocent people. And as the minutes tick away, Warne’s struggle to outsmart his opponents grows ever more urgent, for his only daughter is among the unsuspecting crowds in the park.

Lincoln Child evokes the technological wonders of Utopia with such skill and precision it is hard to believe the park exists only in the pages of this extraordinary book. Like Jurassic Park, Utopia sweeps readers into a make-believe world of riveting suspense, technology, and adventure.

UTOPIA -- Where technology dazzles–and then turns deadly!

From the Hardcover edition.Amazon.com Review
It takes a lot of chutzpah to give your novel the same title as one of the most famous novels in the history of English-language literature, even if the original novel didn't spawn a literary field or two (utopian and dystopian fiction) or become an everyday term for the perfect place to live on Earth. Yet there's a postmodern appropriateness to applying the title Utopia to a novel set in a theme park that uses cutting-edge technology to create Earth's most desirable fantasy place to visit. Like Westworld and Jurassic Park, Lincoln Child's Utopia is a near-future theme-park thriller, and like Michael Crichton, Child delivers an abundance of white-knuckle thrills, chills, and shocks.

Despite its remote location in the Nevada desert, the Utopia theme park receives 65,000 visitors daily. They never dream their lives may be in any real danger. However, some of the self-programming robots are becoming erratic, so park administrators quietly bring the robots' brilliant creator from the East Coast to fix the problem before it gets any worse. Dr. Andrew Warne brings his daughter, for he doesn't believe there is anything wrong with his creations. But on the day of their arrival, a mysterious band of ruthless criminals infiltrates not only the park, but its computerized systems. The unknown terrorists appear to control everything, from the simplest robot to the most dangerous ride. And if their demands aren't met, thousands of innocent park-goers will be killed. --Cynthia Ward ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hi-Tech Theme Park Held Hostage
Picture Area 51 technology, a Vegas-level income base, locate it just to the north of Nellis Air Force Base, add in a remorseless mercenary force surrounding a cadre of computer hackers bent on holding the world's largest, most innovative theme park at ransom, and you have the makings of an incredible e-ride filled with all the techno-thrills that fans have come to expect from Lincoln Child.

"Utopia" has all the mystery, shock, tension, and surprise plot-twists that eager audiences have come to expect from this master of his genre. A fun read that ends too soon, but leaves one all-too-ready for the next one.

2-0 out of 5 stars Child's Solo Debut is Undermined by a Tired, Uninteresting Plotline
I enjoy Lincoln Child's work, especially the Pendergast series he writes with Douglas Preston. His solo work is pretty uneven -- it has potential, but I've yet to read a really terrific thriller written by Lincoln Child himself.

UTOPIA is Child's first solo novel, and I must admit I didn't care for it.There's very little about this novel that's fresh and interesting. As other reviewers have commented, Child borrows heavily from pre-existing material, most notably DIE HARD, WESTWORLD, and JURASSIC PARK.The plot moves along sluggishly, and I was able to predict almost all the major plot twists.

The major flaw with UTOPIA, however, is its subject matter: amusement parks.Child is obviously fascinated by his high-tech park, and spends many pages explaining its development, operations and technologies. In the end, I found most of this material to be overly dry and technical.Personally, I wish Child had spent less time describing his park and more time fleshing out his characters, who are mostly two-dimensional.

Lincoln Child's a solid writer, but UTOPIA's mostly a misfire -- if you want to read a solo novel by Child, my advice is to try his second solo novel DEATH MATCH instead, it's a superior read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
I highly recommend this author. There is a lot of detail, which I enjoy, but if you don't, I suggest that you allow yourself to become immersed anyway because it's spellbinding.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hi-tech Supense
I enjoyed this one and read it in record time. Of course I stayed up into the wee hours to finish it. I've learned that with, Child's books, you need to plan on getting to sleep later that usual after you hit the half-way mark.

This techno-thriller plays itself out in a futuristic theme park (Micky Mouse, it ain't) in the Nevada desert.

There are the usual near-death experiences with a few "real-death" experiences thrown in, letting you know that the next demise could involve a prominent character. This one is not for someone with feeble imagination, Child asks his readers to envisionUtopia's out-of-this-world attractions and robotics and if you can do that and follow the central characters as they attempt to thwart the bad guys, you'll remember this one long after you've put it down. Or if not, you will at least remember Wingnut.

Product Description

In 1998, Andrew Carroll founded the Legacy Project with the goal of remembering Americans who have served this nation and preserving their letters for posterity. Since then, more than 50,000 war letters discovered in basements, attics, scrapbooks, and old trunks have poured in from around the country. The best of these letters are assembled in this extraordinary collection, offering unprecedented insight into the Civil War, World Wars I and II, Vietnam, Korea, the Cold War, the Persian Gulf, and even the fighting in Somalia and the Balkans.

Featured here are dramatic accounts of combat written immediately after the most ferocious battles American troops have ever faced; poignant expressions of love by homesick husbands and sweethearts; humorous anecdotes and gripes about insufferable conditions; thoughtful reflections on the nature of warfare; and perhaps most devastating, a startling number of last letters, heartfelt messages penned just hours before the sender was killed.

These historic letters capture the full fury and intensity of warfare, and they reveal in vivid detail what the servicemen and women of this nation have experienced and sacrificed on the front lines. War Letters is a lasting tribute to those who have fought for this country, and celebrates the enduring power and lyricism of personal letters.Amazon.com Review
"I've cast out my razor, divorced my soap, buried my manners, signed my socks to a two-year contract, and proved that you don't have tocome in out of the rain." So wrote Corporal Thomas P. Noonan from Vietnam, proving that humor doesn't fail even in war. Noonan's letter is just one ofover 50,000 that letter-enthusiast Andrew Carroll (Letters of a Nation)received after Abigail Van Buren publicized his Legacy Project in her DearAbby column. Out of this treasure trove he selected 150, spanning 130 yearsof warfare from the Civil War to Bosnia. While there are letters from suchnotables as General William Tecumseh Sherman and even Julia Childs, mostwere written by uncelebrated but dearly loved soldiers from barracks, trenches, and flooded foxholes and by combat journalists, nurses, andfamily members on the home front.

While the letters are not unrelentingly grim, there is ample description ofthe rending agonies of war and the pain of separation. For instance, arecounting of horrors found in a Nazi concentration camp, or a tenderletter to a just-born daughter who may never be seen. Private First ClassRichard King describes the death of a Catholic chaplain blessing thefoxholes: "An artillery shell cut him in half at the waist." Staff SergeantJoe Sammarco tells how he crawled, wounded, across streams and into hillsin order to escape the Chinese, propelled by the thought of his wife andhis babies. Many of these are "last letters," often received after the newsof the writer's death. Lieutenant Tommie Kennedy, a POW on a Japanese "hellship," wrote his farewells on the only thing he had--the back of two familyphotographs, which were smuggled back to his parents.

These are, as Carroll writes, "the first, unfiltered drafts of history."His rich sample testifies to the universal and poignant themes of love andhonor, courage and rage, duty and fear and mortality. The playful andheartfelt voices grant us the personal perspective all too often lost innews reports and government statements. Taken together, they remind usthat, despite the playful good cheer, the human cost of war is far toohigh. A remarkable contribution to the understanding of war and its impact, and a powerful tribute to those undone by it. --Lesley Reed ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars War Letters - Good Read ...
Good perspective of several wars from the point of those who served.

Some really touching letters especially when the author reveals
what happened to the letter writers.

Some good outcomes, some not so much ...

3-0 out of 5 stars Many of the letters are very good, BUT some do not belong
There are letters from `very' different types of people such as George W. Bush (after he was shot down) and from George McGovern (who was a bomber pilot). I really don't care whose side (politically speaking) the authors of the various letters represent as long as it deals with the stated topic (WAR LETTERS). This is why I only gave the book 3 stars. What in the blue blazes are letters from Helen Keller (who is writing about a friend she once knew who is now in jail for being an American commie) & a letter from the American commie traitor Alger Hiss doing in the book? Neither of these letters even remotely have anything to do with an American War.
There are other letters which also have very little to do with a U.S. war but I looked over these as they `sort of' and that is a stretch - were leading up to a war. I do not know for sure - but I believe the author is a left of center sort of guy and it comes through in the letters he chose.

5-0 out of 5 stars An incredibly profound book!
This book is a great read. It is refeshing to be able to read words, thoughts and dreams from people as they perform such honorable duty overseas. This book is powerful and should be required reading for all, especially Americans.

Some anti-war activist may think it is "pro-war" but it isn't just that. This book reveals personal thoughts and challenges faced by American military personnel in wars from the Civil War until the later conflicts in the 20th century. It is pro-war, anti-war and everything in between.

This book reminds me of the sacrifice that so many make for their country. It is a great tribute for those who have served.

3-0 out of 5 stars A useful read
i only gave it three stars because many of the stories were more about patriotism than about the war themselves. Of course every book has its bias so its still a useful and moving read when taken with this grain of salt.

4-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful, different type of war book, but . . .
I received this book as a gift because my family knows I love reading personal histories from those who lived it and "War Letters" seemed perfect for that.I enjoy learning what life was like for the average citizen in an era, whether its someone riding the Erie Canal in 1840, a foot soldier in the American revolution, or a journal from the Civil War.

This is a remarkable book and taken individually there are many, many heart-rending emotional stories that probably need to be read by many people. It does in fact put a personal face on war.Because it is a collection of letters, the book is easily read in short spurts; you don't want (and shouldn't) read this book quickly.

I only gave the book 4 stars because I actually found it hard to read. While the personal letters (the spelling, mannerisms of the authors) help tell their stories, it also keeps the book from developing any flow. Some letters are agonzingly slow to read and understand.I'm certainly not faulting the authors or their stories; but if you're looking for a great, well-written, smooth-flowing story that you can't put down, this isn't it. ... Set in 1964, Barefoot in the Park follows the lives of newlyweds Paul and Connie Bratter as they adjust to married life in a tiny Greenwich Village apartment. Paul is a lawyer who’s wound up a little too tight, while Connie is a free spirit bubbling over with romantic notions. In typical Simon style, all manner of comic chaos ensues as the Bratters’ marriage begins to collapse under the pressure of a five-flight walk-up, a skylight that leaks snow, an eccentric neighbor who must climb through their apartment to get to his, and Connie’s misguided attempt to marry off her mother. Acclaimed playwright, Neil Simon, is a Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning author. “Neil Simon’s comedy Barefoot in the Park is 30-something now, but its newlywed protagonists, the Bratters, remain forever young.” — The Dallas Morning News ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Adorably Entertaining Play
I first heard of this play from my good friend, who happened to see it performed in Central Park. I later saw this old copy of the play laying around my high school stage office, and picked it up, remembering my friends mention of it... upon finishing the play (within two days, I could NOT put it down) I realized I have NEVER laughed so hard outloud while reading any sort of literature.. it is witty, comical, and softly but lovingly expressing the hardships of the first days of marriage and living together with your beloved. I highly highly highly recommend picking this up for a mood-lifter, or just a good laugh. It is light and entertaining and very cute!

Read by Eric Stoltz

From one of America's most acclaimed biographers, here at last is the definitive life of one of the most legendary, controversial, and enigmatic figures in American history - Charles A. Lindbergh.

National Book Award winner A. Scott Berg is the first and only writer to have been given unrestricted access to the massive Lindbergh archives - more than two thousand boxes of personal papers, including reams of unpublished letters and diaries - and to be allowed to freely interview Lindbergh's friends, colleagues, and family members, including his children and his widow, Anne Morrow Lindbergh. The result is a brilliant biography that clarifies a life long blurred by myth and half-truth.

From the moment he landed in Paris on May 21, 1927, Lindbergh found himself thrust upon an odyssey for which he was ill prepared - the first modern media superstar, defied and demonized many times over in a single lifetime.Berg casts dramatic new light on Lindbergh's childhood; his astonishing flight; the kidnapping of his son, which has been called "The Crime of the Century;" Lindbergh's fascination with Hitler's Germany; and his unsung work in his later years.

In all, this is a most compelling story of a most significant life: the most private of public figures finally revealed with a sweep and detail never before possible. This is at once Lindbergh the hero and Lindbergh the man.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible!
If you like historical non-fiction, this is a must-read.I was a little skeptical about reading a biography about Lindbergh, but this novel has been a pleasure to read. The book gives a enlightening perspective on America in the early 1900's, and I have learned a lot about the history of aviation that has been extremely interesting even though I didn't think I wanted to learn about it!I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lindberghby Scott Brown
Excellent book. Purchased used but the condition of the book was like new. Lindberg by Scott Brown is well written
and if you have an interest in historical events of the 20th Century, you'll find this book an outstanding choice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lindbergh: A Much Maligned 20th Century Visionary
I came late to this party, having just finished (mid-2009) Berg's 1998 biography of Charles A. Lindbergh, who I consider to be an aviation and environmental visionary.

It amazes me that otherwise well-intentioned people allow themselves to be distracted by his [insert current number here] illegitimate children or alleged Nazi sympathies. (In my opinion, there are no illegitimate children but multitudes of wayward parents.)

If you are one whose head and heart has been turned by this sort of calumny, this book will help you gain the perspective you need on an unlikely hero, a world citizen and arguably the first modern global celebrity.

The author, who was granted unprecedented access to voluminous primary source files, clearly attempts to provide a balanced, but measured, biography. In doing so, it becomes obvious that Lindbergh accomplished great things despite a bizarre childhood, an obsessive personality, a difficult marriage, the famous murder of his firstborn and decades of unrelenting media intrusions into his private life.

But his contributions--some of them incredible and surprising--to our world far outweigh these significant negatives.

The book is riveting, readable and well-written.

1-0 out of 5 stars hagiography and non-history
There should be a zero or minus star category.Read the book a few years ago, only to find after the most superficial googling and fact-checking, the author omitted or did not find out about Lindbergh's multiple illegitimate children by two German women.Besides soft pedalling his notorious racism and anti-Semitism, how can this be considered a biography when such basic information is left out?Is there going to be a corrected edition?

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Biography of an American Original Charles Lindbergh
~Lindbergh~ is an astute an well-written biography by acclaimed writer A. Scott Berg. Berg captures the life of this most fascinating character. What unfolds is an amazing tale of the aviator turned adventurer turned statesmen turned war hero.

Aviator Charles Lindbergh, gained acclaim for the first solo, non-stop transatlantic flight across Long Island, New York to Paris, France in 1927 in the famed "Spirit of St. Louis." Not long after, he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. At the time, Lindbergh was seen as a man of seemingly impeccable character. He became an American hero overnight.

A. Scott Berg casts light on Charles' complex marriage to Anne Morrow Lindbergh, the daughter of the famed J.P. Morgan investment banker. His marriage had its ups and downs due to his indiscretions, and it was not a fairy-tale marriage by any stretch of the imagination. Though, public perception certainly believed the marriage as a storybook romance in 1927. Berg also illustrates how tragedy hit the Lindbergh family and the whole nation in 1932 with sensitivity.

Lindbergh, being an acclaimed aviator, was invited to Germany in the 1930s, where he subsequently received a medal. It was an opportunity that intrigued him, for the Germans were renowned for their innovation in aeronautics. With the approval of Nazi chieftains Hermann Goering and Ernst Udet, Lindbergh was permitted to inspect and tour German Luftwaffe facilities, and view some of their latest innovations such as the Messerschmitt Bf 109 and Junkers Ju 88. He became enamored of German aviation technology not coincidentally thereafter. He believed that German aviation was superior to that of the Americans and British. Why? Probably, because it was. His trip to Germany, however, soon soiled his reputation, particularly after 1939, despite the fact that Lindbergh returned the commendation awarded by the German government. When misguided historians like Max Wallace present Lindbergh as a Nazi sycophant, he conveniently forgets, either out of ignorance or obfuscation, that Lindbergh came to Germany at the urgent request of the U.S. military attaché at the American embassy in Berlin. The military attaché was charged with learning everything possible about Germany's new warplanes. In other words, Lindbergh was covertly providing U.S. intelligence, and playing off of his reputation as an aviator of international fame to gain a warm reception by the Germans. He might not have brought back stolen 1:6 scale airplane models from the hangar offices and secret James Bond snapshot pictures, but he was doing his country a service nonetheless.

His political odyssey took some strange turns, and it put him at the helm of the American First Committee which pressed the case for keeping the United States neutral and out of World War II with Germany. While his patriotism and motives have been brought into question, Berg gives us a few reasons not to question Lindbergh's sincerity. When the war began, Lindbergh was quick to uphold his honor, and be a part of the Army Air Corps unofficially. Unfortunately, being the bitter partisan, President FDR, stripped him of his opportunity to fly in dress ranks, and he flew unofficially as a contractor. But Lindbergh earned much success dogfighting against Japanese over the Pacific. He was denied his deserved commendations because of politics.

This book is a marvelous journey into the life of aviator Charles Lindbergh. Berg sculptures a sensitive and astutely written account of the life of this acclaimed American. If read, in tandem with Lindbergh's on autobiographical journal "The Spirit of St. Louis," one can certainly get a fascinating picture of his life. The superb prose is matched by the fascinating insights of the author who had direct access to the Lindbergh family's personal archives. ... Read more
