4-0 out of 5 stars Funny cute story
This is a cute story about a frog name Mr. Jeremy Fisher, who have friends over for dinner and he figured, he should catch some minnows for the. While was fishing he has quite a bit of an adventure.

Another beautifully illustrated short story for children by Beatrix Potter. A good choice to read out loud to little kids during story time. I quite enjoy the short story and it's one of the stories a kid really got to have in their reading list as they are growing up.

5-0 out of 5 stars "He lived in a little damp house amongst the buttercups..."
This cute little book was written and illustrated by the great Beatrix Potter (1866-1943) in 1906, the eighth of her many wonderful stories. This book tells the tale of Mr. Jeremy Fisher, a frog who decides to go fishing for minnows, so that he can have his friends over for dinner. But, Mr. Fisher never anticipated the many problems his little fishing excursion would run into!

Overall, I found this to be a very cute story, and a lot of fun to read to my little one. Mr. Fisher's damp home is funny, as is his aplomb in facing his problems. This is a great book, that I highly recommend!

5-0 out of 5 stars Potter never talks down to children!
I was given this book when I was ten, and it is now a favorite of my three year old.She especially loves that Mr. Jeremy's house is "slippy-sloppy" and that he likes getting his feet wet.The story is fun and funny, and Potter's use of language is intelligent. This is the kind of book that inspires children to be better speakers.Any children's writer who uses words like "disconsolately" is five stars to me!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great one
Like so few of Potter's books, this one actually makes sense and lives up to its legend. The gags are still funny for starters and there are few, if any, arcane references to long gone trivia. The minor characters are even fun.
My own favorite thing about Jeremy Fisher is that he is eaten, then spit back out because his rain gear doesn't taste good to the fish who's swallowed him! How manybooks do you know where the main character is eaten? Good stuff. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars "On the 18th Day of Christmas.....You May Still Be Reading Christmas Books!"
If you are looking for a unique version of The Night Before Christmas, this copy will be just that. The palm-size book is about 3 inches by 3 ½ inches, and probably ½" thick.I don't have to tell you about the story; it's universally known. This will probably be a great stocking-stuffer for one of your children, or maybe a clever table card for everyone attending your Christmas Eve dinner; a hanging bookmark with someone's name will add to the beauty of the table set before the guests. You might even slide a thin festive cord around the book, and hang it as an ornament on your family Christmas Tree; I did just that!

The illustrations look Victorian, and the text is done in calligraphy. While this edition by Running Press may no longer be available, no doubt some entrepreneur is quickly working on a similar type book which can be used in many ways."Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!"

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Stories!
I bought this book for my three grandchildren, girls, who like the Shrek movies.I didn't know about the book until recently, so I bought it so the girls could see the correlation between the book and the movies. There is just one short story about Shrek that makes him less loveable than the movie does, but it's still a good story. But the other stories in the book are just great, good to read aloud. My favorite is the Amazing Bone, about a bone that talks!Kids from 4 - 12 will enjoy this book, highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Kids @ Teens Read Too
Most people, if not everyone, knows the story of Shrek, thanks to the animated version that was widely successful. But the majority of people probably don't know that Shrek originated with William Steig. And what better way to learn the original story of Shrek than by listening to it on this unabridged recording.

THE ONE AND ONLY SHREK! is actually a compilation of six stories, the first and most famous being the one of Shrek. But have no fear; the other five stories on the CD are just as fun and interesting as Shrek.

Meryl Streep and Stanley Tucci alternate narrating the stories. So for parents who aren't keen on audio books, listening to these two well-known and adored actors will enhance the experience.

Meryl Streep is at her best while reading Brave Irene, a story about a young girl determined to get a dress her mother slaved over to the castle in time for the party. The girl encounters many obstacles along the way, only to be rewarded at the end.

And let's not forget Mr. Tucci. He brilliantly interprets the stories and interjects energy and a light-hearted touch to all he reads.Doctor De Soto showcases Mr. Tucci at his best.

All six tales are enchanting and some, believe it or not, leave you with a moral whether you were looking for one or not.If you find yourself on a short road trip, or even just driving around town with the kids, THE ONE AND ONLY SHREK! will help the time go that much faster.

Product Description

Here are twelve magnificent stories in which John Cheever celebrates -- with unequaled grace and tenderness -- the deepest feelings we have.

As Cheever writes in his preface, 'These stories seem at times to be stories of a long-lost world when the city of New York was still filled with a river light, when you heard the Benny Goodman quartets from a radio in the corner stationery store, and when almost everybody wore a hat.'

John Cheever was born in Quincy, Massachusetts, in 1912. He is the author of seven collections of stories and five novels. His first novel, The Wapshot Chronicle, won the 1958 National Book Award. In 1965 he received the Howells Medal for Fiction from the National Academy of Arts and Letters, and in 1978 The Stories of John Cheever won the National Book Critics Circle Award and the Pulitzer Prize. Shortly before his death, in 1982, he was awarded the National Medal for Literature from the Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters.

Benjamin Cheever is the author of The Plagiarist, The Parisian and Famous after Death.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cheever Aloud
Great spoken Cheever.Of course Meryl Streep is wonderful, but the revelation on this CD is Blythe Danner.I've only heard her speak in movies, and she is, of course, astonishing beautiful. But here, only her voice is what you get, and her talent just blows you away.
