4-0 out of 5 stars A 4 star album with a couple of 5 star songs
This is a calm James Taylor album perfect for a late afternoon and an orange sunset. Not like Taylor's older rock albums, it has a more modern feeling, maybe slightly western but by no means country. Being a different kind of James Taylor it will appeal to a different kind of listener, sort of like the difference "Surprise" offers from most of Paul Simon's other work. Good, just a slightly different feel.

On here alot of the songs sound the same, that is except for the first track "Line 'Em Up" which I think is one of the all time best James Taylor songs. You remember how "Your Smiling Face" was jus a complete hit all the way around from the beginning? Well this is like that. From the first note you know that its well written and equally well sung. After this early climax there seems to be alot of filler kind of material with slow ballads such as "Gaia" and "Enough To Be On Your Way". "Jump Up Behind Me" is the next thing close to a 5 star song. A warm and well paced beat paired with Taylor's sultry vocals. "Another Day" stands out among all of the other slow songs. Slow at the beginning, but the it picks up slightly. This album ends on a nice note with "Boatman" and an old tune Taylor turned into gold caled "Walking My Baby Back Home". If you hang on long enough you will hear bonus track 13 which holds no particular intrigue. Just a sporadic little western blues jam Taylor might have put together at the last minute. Its kind of silly, but sung well.

This is a 4 star James Taylor album with a couple of 5 star songs on it. The rest are a little bland. I wouldn't recomend it to those unfamiliar with Taylor's work just as I wouldn't tell some one about Paul Simon and then hand them a copy of "Surprise". But if you like James Taylor, its worth a try.

5-0 out of 5 stars JT Hourglass
The award winning album is probably one of the top 5 JT albums out there (amongst Mud Slide Slim, October Road, Gorilla and Sweet Baby James).

I use this CD personally for sound quality car audio competitions, as the quality is absolutely amazing (plus JT is my fav music artist).By far one of his best recorded albums along with October Road.

4-0 out of 5 stars 6 long years
Finally....."Hourglass" is James Taylor's first studio Album in 6 years. Released in 1997, featuring great artists like Sting, Stevie Wonder, Yo-Yo Ma, Michael Brecker and Branford Marsalis, Taylor put his heart in releasing this album. The result is a collection of relaxing, melodic and pleasant tunes and songs all related to love and family.
James Taylor is back to the basic of his guitar sounds and tunes and this album is a perfect example to that, showing Taylor at his best; highly recommended to all the fans and to anyone who wants to hear a great Folk Soft Rock album.
If you are new to James Taylor's music and like this album, I recommend you try another CD titled "One Man Dog"
Hourglass

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet Baby James does it Again. . .
Hard to believe that more than 35 years have passed since JT's debut. As one of the most talented of 70's performers, Taylor has consistently turned out material that superbly showcases his enormous gifts as a singer-songwriter. While some have knocked him for being too mellow, anyone who doubts that Taylor can rock should take a listen to his live rendition of "Steamroller Blues" (from his first Greatest Hits album). In fact, I once saw him bring a staid group of tuxedoed award-show attendees to its feet during a rousing live performance of "Steamroller."

Nevertheless, Taylor has always known himself, his forte and he never falters on delivering what he does best.A matchless ballad singer, Taylor often seems like a comforting force of nature:"Fire and Rain," for example, is as moving today as it was in 1972.On Hourglass, "Enough to be On Your Way" is a ballad that rises to the level of "Fire and Rain" while "Look up from your Life" is an impressive addendum to "You've Got a Friend.""Line 'em Up" pokes fun at political hypocrisy during the winding-down stretch of Vietnam; the song is a gentle but nonetheless terse comment from a baby boomer who reminds us of the turbulence of that era, though it could apply to today's scene.Taylor's tenderness, his wry sense of humor, patience and excellent musicianship are all on display here. "Hourglass" is definitely a keeper--an indisputable testament to James Taylor's staying power!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guitar Tabs
This book is helpful because it has excellent guitar tabulation.Often I find tabulation coming across too complicated or too simplistic. This one gave the right amount of information to play the songs correctly and not over-burden me with too much technical stuff. Also, a very nice group of James Taylor songs!

5-0 out of 5 stars If you are a JT fan, you must get this
First of all, you can't be too disappointed about whether You've Got A Friend is included in this book or not. It was originally written by Carol King. JT also is a songwriter/singer. It makes sense that the Best of James Taylor should include his own compositions. If you want You've Got A Friend, you should look at this book called Acoustic Guitar Bible. It has a great collection ofacoustic songs(recorded version) that are accurate and the book is relatively cheap.

5-0 out of 5 stars Player and Fan
I have been a JT fan since that day way back in the fall of 1970 when i purchased the original Apple album and Sweet Baby James at EJ Korvette in NYC - (for $2.69 each).

JT is a great player - his style is highlighted by a moving bass, unusual chords, and rhythmic syncopation - it's a difficult style to replicate. Not to mention those classic JT licks!

I've checked all the JT tab books out there. Both James Taylor Greatest Hits and James Taylor Classic Guitar Tab are accurate - but - they do something very strange. As many of you know, JT capos his guitar. These two volumes correctly identify the capo position but the tab reflects the actual fret rather than the relative fret. Now I read music and Tab well enough to figure out what's happening - but these two books just make you work far to hard.Thumbs down for those guys.

Anyway - this volume - The Best of James Taylor - does it correctly. Tab reflects the relative position. No matter where you capo, it's easy to figure out.

As for accuracy - the Tab is very accurate. For those wishing to truly get that JT sound - this is it (until Homespun Tapes finally gets JT to make an instructional DVD - what about it Happy?). This book really does a great job of getting the chords and picking style correct. Thank you.

Finally, song selection - there are so many great JT tunes - no single volume is going to make everyone happy. Personally, I wish this included Something in the Ways She Moves and You've Got a Friend - however, there are enough great tunes here to keep you busy.

Nice to have - it would have been nice if the publisher had included instructional CDs.

Thanks Colgan Bryan for doing such a great job!

2-0 out of 5 stars Who Is Kr Schonberg?
The songs are by JT, the transcribing is by Colgan Bryan, and the book is a Hal Leonard. Can't find Kr Schonberg anywhere in the book. Anyway, whether these songs are JT's best is debateable, but they are good ones. Chords used in each song are diagrammed clearly, the tablature is found beneath the standard music notation, and each song is several pages. I am unable to read standard music notation. Unfortunately, there is nothing in the tablature to indicate beat/timing/rhythm of the songs: just numbers on lines. There's no CD with this book. The standard music notation probably shows how this song is supposed to be played, but again, unfortunately, I cannot read standard music notation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good For Learning JT's Guitar Style
I wish this book was available years ago. When I started playing guitar 20 years ago, my goal was to learn to play like JT.This book features guitar tablature arrangements that are very faithful to what you hear on JT's records. The only reason I don't give the book 5 stars is that it lacks some of the songs most of us would expect given the title. However, the book DOES contain the all-important "Fire and Rain", "Carolina in My Mind", "Sweet Baby James", and my personal favorite, "You Can Close Your Eyes" ... 5-0 out of 5 stars James Taylor guitar music book
This book arrived promptly, in perfect condition and exactly as advertised.A great gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for advanced players
I just bought the book.It is absolutely authentic guitar tab, with every note transcribed. The only drawback is that when a capo is used, the notes aren't relative to the capo. But other than that, this is an excellent book with all of JT's early classics.

Beginners beware, James uses millions of chords and picking patterns that
make the songs quite difficult.

2-0 out of 5 stars Excruciatingly poorly written
Wow, I've been trying to wade through this book for about a week now. The author constantly trails off into way-too-long tangents on history, other celebrities, and other artists' work. He also glosses over or barely delves into many of the key points in Taylor's life (marriages/divorces, deaths of family members, addictions). I think he could have used some Ritalin to help him concentrate on the subject at hand: "Remember to write about James Taylor, remember to write about James Taylor. . ."

5-0 out of 5 stars If you want to learn more about James Taylor, this is the book to read.
I found this book interesting and well-written. It was great to learn more about James Taylor and his family. I have appreciated his music for over 30 years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great insight on JT and family
I thoroughly enjoyed it. Areas of great interest to me were his family history as well as the memories of his childhoood and young adulthood, his parent's relationship, and his many friendships with people I had no idea he was friends with, etc. I also enjoyed the section where he shared personal insights and info about various songs and what they meant to him.Great book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Boring
Very tedious boring start about family history in British Isles.
Never really picked up the pace, almost nothing new. Glosses over
heroin and drug abuse. Sorry, poorly done

3-0 out of 5 stars Beware - this is not the tab edition!
Despite what you may think from reading the other reviews, this edition does not include guitar tablature. The one that does has the same cover as this, but has a different ISBN.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very accurate, but bad tab
The transcriptions in this book are 100% dead on, they play exactly like the CD, which is great if thats what you are looking for. However, they have one huge flaw in them.

Many of the songs use a capo. The tab has the chords in both the key you are playing in, and the relative capo key, which is great. However, the tab is written as if you do not have a capo.

For example, the first chord in "youve got a friend" is an A, but because of the capo at the second fret, you play a G.This would normally give you tab that had a 3 on the lowest string, to play the G note, however, you are really on the 5th fret because of the capo. The tab has a 5, instead of the more intuitive 3.This makes it very difficult to play, because you have to constantly transpose the notes as you are playing.

4-0 out of 5 stars James Taylor's Greatest Hits
This book of sheet music is ideal for the acoustic guitar player who wants to learn more about the "James Taylor Style" of playing.

Taylor uses many guitar chords in his songs that are not normally seen by theeverage guitar player. Every song in this collection of his early hits hasspecific chord diagrams to help you through the difficult learningprocess.

I have gotten many hours of pure enjoyment from this book andanticipate many years of the same.

If you are a James Taylor fan, thisis a "must buy." You will not regret it! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars disinformation in advertising
a fine piece of work for the james taylor fan...BUT ...how can anyone call a book complete...when it isn't????There is NOTHING complete about this.My lesson...don't believe anything the marketing gurus set before you!!!If it says complete....it's probably only the beginning fragment of a potential scam.if it says final...don't bet on it!there is more than likely a sequel waiting to be mass marketed next winter shopping season!

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete Volume One
The music, lyrics, and guitar chord diagrams, for almost 70 songs.Although I do not own all the albums, the book appears to contain all the songs from the albums "James Taylor" "Sweet Baby James" "Mud Slide Jim" "Gorilla" "One Man Dog" and "Walking Man."A must-own for the JT fan.

3-0 out of 5 stars The not-so-Complete JT
I was disappointed. More at what was not in the book than what was in it. This book only covers a few of his many albums. I have no complaints about the music that is in there but I had higher expectations when it said JT complete. I missed the "Vol. 1" hidden down by the ISBN #. Which is my own fault. This is Not James Taylor Complete. This is James Taylor Vol. #1!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Absolute Must for guitar

this was a great gift for the young guitar player who loves this singer songwriter.

3-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful for a Fan.
I just adore sheet music and no sheet music is complete without a title from a favorite artist is it? I gave this gift lovingly to my mother, who really enjoys his music. There is something very powerful in his lyrics andmusic. The lyrics transcend generations. When Taylor says in "Fire andRain," "I've seen sunny days that I thought would neverend," we don't know if he was overjoyed at the warmth of the day or ifhe was mad at the world and he didn't want it to be a happy place. Eitherway, it's brilliant. Don't take my word. See for yourself. ... Read more

Book Description
Many musicians sing about heartache, despair, and confusion, but few have experienced those feelings more intensely than James Taylor, who rose from a childhood of privilege as the son of an affluent medical school dean to become a modern-day troubadour and pop superstar.

When he was seventeen years old, his demons led him to a Massachusetts mental institution where he confronted them the only way he knew how, by writing his first songs. Thirty years later, Taylor's songs are among the most popular in the annals of music, but the demons are still with him.

But unlike many of his contemporaries who faced a similar struggle, Taylor managed to emerge as an inspirational figure. Fire and Rain traces this remarkable path, including his troubled marriage to pop star Carly Simon and the premature alcoholism-related death of his brother: Taylor's ten-month stay in the exclusive private psychiatric institution where he finished high school; His self-imposed exile to England where he submitted some of his music to the Beatles' Apple Records, which signed him to his first record contract in 1968. Paul McCartney mentored Taylor's early career; The story behind his second album, Sweet Baby James, which contained the song "Fire and Rain" about the hopelessness of mental illness and suicide; As Taylor's fame increased, so did his problems with heroin, alcohol, and mental illness. In the seventies, the singer nearly fell over the edge many times. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A Bit Too Reverential
Though there is plenty here about Taylor's well known drug addiction and his tempestuous marriage to Carly Simon, this rock bio still comes off as too fawning. It would have benefited from better sources. Taylor or Simon do not appear to have been interviewed, nor was producer Peter Asher. Instead, we read a lot of boring quotes from fans about how great James Taylor is.

1-0 out of 5 stars The James Taylor Story? Not!
This book isn't worth the paper it's printed on. I hesitate to even put my two cents in because I don't want to encourage anyone else to buy this trash- even out of morbid curiosity- but- this is the stuff of supermarket tabloids- if you really want to gain insight into the life and work of James Taylor- look elsewhere. Halperin can't write and his "quotes" are so obviously made up this "bio" doesn't even pass the straight face test.I feel like I should apologize to Taylor and his family for even reading it. Absolute trash- don't waste you time and money.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best music book of the last 10 years
I cannot express how important and entertaining this book really is.Ian Halperin is a great storyteller, encompassing Taylor's early struggles to his present glory.I have read books about Dylan, Mitchell, Young and Jagger - nothing compares to this tome.A must read for every music fan of the 70s to present.

4-0 out of 5 stars James Taylor Rules
The best tribute that can be paid to any artist is a tribute - that's what this bio is.My only concern was that the author went too out of his way to praise Taylor.I would have like to know more about some of his demons. The book reads more like a tribute.Otherwise, there are many interesting facts about the life and times of one of the greatest artists to emerge from the late sixties and early seventies.

5-0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed it!
Perhaps more of the seventies and eighties should have been featured. But the early part of JT's life is well written.I was referred by a friend to read Fire and Rain.It did not disappoint.I used to live in North Carolina.Thoughts of my childhood sprung to my mind by reading this book.Great memories - great music. This book proves how valuable an icon JT is to the music industry. And, convincingly, the author portrays his life how he overcame lots of demons to become one of music's most notable stars - ever! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Developing a Successful Advertising Plan
This book is an eloquent statement of how you must communicate to overcome the clutter and confusion in your reader's mind. The authors make a strong point: Pick out something unique that matches the needs of some customers and differentiates you from the competition, and keep repeating your message. Do not dilute your message or broaden your positioning. I have seen many of my clients waste hundreds of millions of dollars by failing to heed these lessons, and I was delighted when I first read this book so that I could refer my clients to it. Read this book, use its lessons, and you will vastly increase your influence. In my own work, I find that 'stalled' thinking that delays organizational progress is normally influenced by poor communications. Some of the other stalls are tradition, disbelief, bureaucracy, procrastination, unattractiveness, and misconceptions. Learn your challenge your thinking habits in these areas, and you can have twenty times as much or the same results 20 times faster. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Factually correct. Almost
This book started out looking really good. It is full of some of the best pictures of BMW 5-series cars I have seen in a single collection.

However, by the time they get onto the E39 cars, things begin to fall apart. The book becomes factually incorrect. Some of the humdingers include:
1) "All E39 cars came equipped with electric seats". Bolox. Not correct. I have driven two German built cars that had manual seat adjustment
2) The gear selector is moved to the right on right hand drive cars to select manual mode. Rubbish. They all move to the left.

It goes on and on...

Also, being published in 1999, it stops at the launch of the M5. There must be newer, better books available on this subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars Incomplete Story
The book title is incorrect because the story contained within is not complete. There is no mention of the different styles of ventilation control housings underneath the center of the dash panels, in E28 5 series BMW.Illustrations on pages 75, 80 and 96 show different styles E28 vent control and a/c housings, however there is no mention of these differences in any of the text.Appropriate additions should be included in all future editions of an otherwise excellent 5er book.

Product Description
Hudson survived his perilous maiden voyage to his beloved China. With his heart set in determined obedience to God, and trusting the provision of the One who had called, Hudson overcame persecution and almost overwhelming personal losses to bring to bring God's truth to the "ripe harvest fields" of China.
Today, Hudson Taylor's story continues to challenge and inspire believers young and old to carry the anchoring gospel message, regardless of personal trial or hardships, to those who are adrift and without hope. ... Read more

It's up to you if you want to get a picture of the struggles of Hudson Taylor on several fronts. He had to hear from God himself to endure the pressures of his calling. "Back to Jersusalem" is a movement that has it's roots in Hudson's ministry.

An adventure story about an early unconventional missionary!!This is a great read aloud book for older elementary age children and up.Although the setting is middle 1800s, the lessons are timeless.A great way to teach your children the difficulties faced by early missionaries, (5 1/2 dangerous months at sea just to get to China) and their complete reliance upon God to surmount seemingly impossible challenges.Although Taylor's faith is great, even he is surprised by the continual rescues and provisions that are clearly God orchestrated. My children thought it started slowly, but got more exciting when he finally reached China! Even adults will enjoy listening.I highly recommend it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Refreshing read!
This book was powerful. It was well-written and captured the pioneering spirit of Hudson Taylor.I also appreciated how this autobiography captured firsthand the impressions that Dr. Taylor made on others. This book was truly inspiring - especially the sections where it chronicles Taylor's inner struggles of finding his joy and sufficiency in Christ, the many instances when God answered his prayers during times of his greatest need, and his devotion to his family.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good book
I read this book and found it inspiring and helpful.I particularly found the secret that Hudson Taylor speaks of relevant to transforming and deepening immensely my own walk with God. Not only I, but years ago my father's life was dramatically changed as he was inspired to have faith in the God who took care of Hudson Taylor as a missionary in China. After reading this book my father was able to put confidence in the Lord to take care of him as he stepped out into full time Christian service.(Hudson Taylor relied on God to provide for all of his needs and would not tell others what his financial needs were.God was faithful to meet all of Taylor's needs as well as the missionary society he founded. But there is far more in this book than that).

If you are looking for a deeper, intimate walk with God then read this book.Or if you struggle with living faithfully, joyfully and consistently for the Lord then read this book. The spiritual transformation that occured to Hudson Taylor took place after years of service on the mission field. Many Christians, like Hudson Taylor did, will benefit to find the secret of that transformation.I did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational and a testimony of God working in men.
A book for missionaries, which indeed we all are for Christ. This is a thrilling true story of one man's relationship to our Lord and what his life becomes in service to Him. All those who have dedicated their lives toChrist can learn a lot about living out the faith and what God can do whenyou put your entire being into His loving hands. What this man, HudsonTaylor, does in China, we have assurance that God also wants to do in ourlives even right where we are. A blessing for the indivual reader, andsubsequently for those around, affected by the ministry inspired. ... Read more
