Excellent History
This book really goes into the fine points of the Discovery I's history. Itgoes into the background of why this great car was built they way it is.I recommend the book to all Disco I owners.

This book helped me buy my first Disco!
Getting into the Land Rover brand is not an easy task...For the first time buyer, it is easy to get fooled and buy a lemon...Which will be very expansive to keep on the road.In order to make sure my purchase would be a good one and my investment a sound one, I read a lot of books and articles on the matter.

I finally ended up buying a 1997 Serie 1 Discovery SE.I purchased this book at the end of my purchasing process, which lasted more than 2 years.It helped me put everything together and focus on my needs and budget.I recommend this book to anybody who wants to get acquainted with the Discovery.

Enough detail to be interesting; coherently written
I read this book on the 'plane from Seattle to Chicago a week or so ago. Given the period '89-'98 that the book covers, I was pleasantly surprised to see the included material on project 'Tempest' (Discovery II) released in 1999.

The author clearly had personal contact with many of the Landrover engineers and project staff for all three Discovery projects, and this added immensely to the value.

Much of the material is apparently leveraged from earlier magazine articles which likely helped it be factually accurate based on Land Rover staff available when the article was first published.

Thoroughly recommended for the Land Rover fan.

A Classic
It is about the "old" Discovery (1989-1998) and James Taylor is probably the best person to tell us the story of this great vehicle. Every Discovery owner must have a copy of this book to understandthe project evolution since 1989, with good information about its changes along those years (engines, gear boxes, electronics etc). There are good tips for those who want to buy a good second hand Discovery. In the end, Taylor describes the "New Discovery" project launched in 1999.

Great info for Disco owners
If you own a Discovery, irrespective of the country you are in, you will get a lot of info from this book. The Author has researched it well, and covers all the issues I wanted to know about my vehicle. Some of the photos are great, I esp. like the convertible model - a shame they were never put that one into production - I want one of those! This is not a technical manual as such, but it still has a lot of facts & figures. It is also helpful if you are considering options from other models and want to see what they look like. I have an ES model, but would like to get the factory wheel arch flares, and I know what they would look like... Recommended for a Discovery or Land Rover enthusiast, or if you intend to purchase one and want to do your research. ... Read more

Gee,Awfully one way
OK.Call me a moron.But I bought this book... assuming it translated Portuguese and English back and forth-who would only want to translate portuguese into english?... you mean for $80, I only get a one way trip.

This book is excellent for a university book translator living in the US or Britain.For a field businessman or engineer looking to become a colloquial speaker and writer.... look elsewhere.

Stanford University press... you cheap turkeys... didn't Leland Stanford,your robber baron railroad founder, leave you enough land and resources to include things going from English to Portuguese... Well you have my $80,and now I know how Leland made his money.

Excellent resource for learning Portuguese.
The Collins Pocket Gems are good at quick English<->Portuguese translations, but eventually you will advance beyond translating things back and forth and start to read Portuguese literature.At that moment, it is essential that you have a good dictionary on-hand to help with learning new words and their meanings.

This book offers tens of thousands of words, with pronounciations, English meanings, and usage examples.The first section also has a helpful pronounciation guide, and the back section has a list of verb conjugations that seems very complete.Overall, a worthy desk reference that bridges the gap between pocket translation and native language dictionaries. ... This is a book looking at behaviours which raise our 'social status' (sometimes called 'Demonstrations of High Value, abbreviated to DHV's), and looking at things we may be unknowingly doing to lower our social status (Demonstrations of Low Value, abbreviated to DLV).
Essentially this is a workbook to raise your social status, loaded with exercises, tips, and social intelligence to this effect. For instance, if you want to speak to a busy person you might feel the desire to rush your words and do things which put you in a lower status relative to them. There are ways to turn this around by making them curious to hear what you have to say.  This way they will suddenly find time to speak to you, and their curiosity will put YOU in the higher status position. This  ' being busy' phenomena  can also be used to YOUR advantage.
People may bully you using presuppositions. These can be used by others to form nasty put downs which are hard to quickly respond to; for example 'You know you can't do that' or 'do you realize you are letting the team down'. This book has many examples and exercises to enable you to quickly identify and effectively respond to these in future.
In a conversation with a 'high status' person, you probably feel the desire to agree with what they are saying, which you know will increase rapport. If you disagree with something they say, you are showing them that you can think for yourself, and raising an alternative view may also generate more conversation. Agreement is compliance, which generates rapport, disagreement generates status and often generates attraction. Carefully judged balance is essential here!

"The Ape in the Corner Office" and "Speaking Clearly: Improving Voice and Diction with free Pronunciation CD-ROM" would be a good combination with this book.

Another great little self-help book by James Taylor. He gets to the heart of the problem of the 'put down,' showing how you can turn around a situation to your advantage. A book full of information and useful tips so that YOU can become assertive and no longer have to feel inferior. The secret is knowing how and James Taylor's mission is to impart that knowledge. You, too, can command respect and be loved for it. Follow the simple rules and you'll be thanking the author of this super book.
However, I would mention that the presentation of the tables is a bit confusing - the only negative aspect about an otherwise informative read - but that does not detract from the book as a whole.
