4-0 out of 5 stars Well Done Hollywood Memoir
This is the fascinating story of Danny Thomas's life--it's filled with unusual stories and details, though it falls just short of being a home-run five-star book. It starts with a chapter that is kind of an overview of his life, then it goes chapter-by-chapter through the years of his upbringing and career.

Danny's childhood was almost hard to believe--he had gone under four different first names, was born to a woman who had married at 15 and had five kids by age 23, was allowed to live with an aunt who was his father's first love (living away from home from age 3 to 15!), dirt poor but Catholic educated he switched to public high school and then spent his days at the movie theatre instead of school (eventually dropping out and never finishing high school).

His professional life seems to be made more out of good timing than talent. He was a storyteller who didn't fit the traditional comedian model so no one knew what to do with him.He had some success in clubs but it was connections, not his talent, that gave him the TV job that made him a star.

The one failure of the book is that he spends too much time retelling stories from his nightclub act and too little details about his family. He has a short chapter on Marlo and it's evident that she rebelled against her mother's smothering, but it doesn't really explain Danny's impact on Marlo. He doesn't seem as emotionally excited about his daughters as he is with his now-famous producer son, yet even there we don't get a lot of detail. He also refuses to tell the date of his wedding, claiming his wife doesn't want people to know her age but leaving open the possibility that there may be another reason. He either doesn't have many family stories to tell or he is too private to share them.

He also could explain more about his production company, that made some of the greatest shows in TV history. There isn't a lot about that either--instead it's mostly the upbeat humor from his nightclub act and references to his childhood or ethnic relatives. It's all very entertaining for a fan of the star.

5-0 out of 5 stars A delight!
This book is a delight. The secret of Danny Thomas's long career comes through in this fascinating book.He clearly loved and took great pride in his wonderful family, thoroughly enjoyed his career, was grateful to all those who helped him on his way, gave back to the community -- and of course, he knew how to tell a great story! The details of his early show business career were particularly interesting as was the story about the founding of St. Jude's hospital.I don't usually read celebrity biographies but this is a good account of a life well spent and I'm glad I happened to read it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars GEM OF A BOOK ABOUT GEM OF A LUTHIER + CD!!!
This is one great book.Fabulous design (odd shape) with extraordinary examples of guitars built and designed by one of the most talented and creative luthiers ever.Danny Ferrington builds wonderful instruments.World-class musicians play them. Here you get to see AND HEAR (with the included CD, which you can't live without) some of Danny's most beautiful creations made specifically for some of the world's best players. The disc includes recordings of the players that the guitars were built for playing the instruments displayed in the book (my personal favorites include David Hidalgo, Ry Cooder, and Richard Thompson).Any guitar lover will cherish this exceptional treasure...now, just try to find one of the collector's batch which include a tweed "guitar" case made to form fit the book!!!WOW!

5-0 out of 5 stars Ferrington guitars
Terrific coffee table book featuring unusual guitars from luthier-to-the-stars Danny Ferrington. Ferrington's work is about 180 degrees from the traditional approach of luthiers such as William Cumpiano. On most acoustic guitars Ferrington's method of neck-to-body attachment is via four bolts a la Fender electric guitars. The best thing about this book is the delightful smorgasbord of shapes, colors and sizes of Ferrington's guitars. As an amateur luthier I never tire of leafing through the book as it is so stimulating to the imagination. The photos are very well done, with many nice close-ups of design features or hardware. There is a 6-page montage of Ferrington's construction methods but this is not really a book on lutherie methods.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just a book.
Don't buy this book unless you are sure it comes with the Sampler CD.The CD is quite amazing and has some tracks that can be used as audiophile-level references. These guitars don't just look great - apparently, they sound great too!

Product Description
In the novel The Blue Mexican, the Hispanic son of a career military man slowly transforms into adulthood as he fuels a three-decade long search for meaning in an ever-changing universe traveling from Italy to Ohio to Texas to California beginning in the 1960s.

The boy grows up fearing girls and fighting, but his episodic adventures lead him through a potpourri of colorful characters as he develops crushes on girls, joins the Cub Scouts, and pilfers from his employer. But his young existence is not without hurdles-when he enters junior high in Ohio, he confronts racism for the first time. Conflicted by generational, ethnic, and personal values during the Summer of Love in San Francisco and his subsequent law enforcement career, his experiences lead him to explore the hypocrisy and treachery of the system he has sworn to protect. As he questions his quest for truth and enlightenment in a world of victims and suspects, an anonymous murder breathes life and meaning into insignificant members of society, welfare, and the politics surrounding illegal immigration.

The Blue Mexican is a poignant and humorous glimpse into one man's soul and small town America during a turbulent, yet influential period in history. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars blue mexican
I actually am quite familiar with what was going on in small police departments in California during the period covered by the author. I was a sergeant in a similiar department that was struggling to make that transition from, policing in a small rural town to policing in a "city".College and education was becoming more important, and the knuckle draggers of years past were being phased out.

That struggle appeared to be a tough time for the author, made even more difficult by his minority status.Mentors were few and far between in those days.Keep in mind, these were pre Rodney King, pre cell phone, pre tape recorded confession days.A higher level of professionalism was beginning to evolve throught out the state in those days. The author did a good job of representing how many good law enforcement officers became casualities of the transition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Richly Compelling and Seriously Relevant
While you're reading this book be prepared to be transported into a separate reality. The writing is so compelling and realistic. The style is smooth with transitions barely noticed. Some chapters made me weep, others could make the hairs on my arms stand on-end and then I found myself laughing out loud. One reading was not enough, I have re-read the book twice and go back to various passages for a good laugh now and then. The philosophies raised in the context of this publication are relevant in today's culture. There were viewpoints that I could selfishly relate to which opened the door for my own healing and search for my very own exquisitely enchanted forest.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating stories and an honest perspective!
This books crosses over so many genres by discussing universal issues that are so prevelent today, just as they were 30 years ago.It has sex, drugs, rock and roll, racism, friendship, excitement and an inside look at the author's experience working in the criminal justice system. Also, unfortunate and often secret parts of millions of people's lives.Absolutely fantastic and easy read. Two thumbs up to this author and going to check when he will release his next one!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Blue Mexican
I do not read many books but when I started reading this one, I could not put it down.I could visualize this story very graphically and the humor added a flair.I would highly recommend this book.

Product Description
Over the past ten years, photographers Danny Conant and Catherine Steinmann made several journeys to Tibet intending to experience firsthand the magical quality that draws pilgrims the world over to this land of deep spirituality and immeasurable beauty. Instead, to their infinite dismay, they discovered a Tibet whose soul is gradually disappearing. The loss is pervasive--cultural, environmental, economic, religious-- and seemingly inexorable.

Vanishing Tibet is about the recent changes that have befallen this captive land. A massive influx of Chinese immigrants, arriving via the newly constructed Beijing-Lhasa Railway, has quickly displaced many Tibetan city-dwellers from their very homes and jobs. The countryside has also suffered: rampant deforestation, unregulated mining, and poorly planned farming have exacted a terrible toll on Tibet's delicate ecosystem.

Through their photographs, Conant and Steinmann seek to record this disappearing culture. Their inventive techniques not only dramatically underscore the context of the images, they also produce gorgeously nuanced works of art that pay homage to a vanishing Tibet. ... Read more

Product Description
The regulation of gene expression in many biological processes involves epigenetic mechanisms. In this new volume, 24 chapters written by experts in the field discuss epigenetic effects from many perspectives. There are chapters on the basic molecular mechanisms underpinning epigenetic regulation, discussion of cellular processes that rely on this kind of regulation, and surveys of organisms in which it has been most studied. Thus, there are chapters on histone and DNA methylation, siRNAs and gene silencing; X-chromosome inactivation, dosage compensation and imprinting; and discussion of epigenetics in microbes, plants, insects, and mammals. The last part of the book looks at how epigenetic mechanisms act in cell division and differentiation, and how errors in these pathways contribute to cancer and other human diseases. Also discussed are consequences of epigenetics in attempts to clone animals. This book is a major resource for those working in the field, as well as being a suitable text for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses on gene regulation. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Epigenetics, all you should know about it
This book contains very detailed molecular information about non-DNA-sequence changes the will affect gene expression.
The epigenetics knowledge is growing so fast that it would be necessary a new revised edition soon.

4-0 out of 5 stars First in this field
An invaluable resource for people going into the field of epigenetics. The first reference textbook in this quickly growing new field of biology, that has been very carefully and accurately written based on the current literature and research

5-0 out of 5 stars Great overvew of this dynamic field
This review provides an excellent overview of the dynamic field of epigenetics. The authors list consists of giants in this field. It is a must read for anyone interested in how phenotypic changes could occur without changes in the DNA sequence would find this a very useful overview. Advanced undergraduates or graduate students would find this book extremely useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Epigenetics - a timely and important text.
It is becoming clear that epigenetic mechanisms are responsible for a large number of "genetic" events in the organism, both under normal and pathological circumstances. This advanced text (suitable for advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students) brings together, in a very readable way, the various mechanisms of epigenetic heredity.

5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable educational tool
Epigenetics is a scientific textbook written to teach advanced undergraduate and graduate college students about epigenetic mechanisms, which regulate gene expression in many biological processes. Chapters cover histone modifications, chromatin remodeling, DNA methylation, siRNAs and gene silencing, X-chromosome inactivation, epigenetics in microbes, plants, insects and mammals, and much more. An in-depth, scholarly, and informative instructional reference, interspersed with occasional color photographs and diagrams, featuring an extensive list of references and a general summary at the end of each chapter to aid comprehension. An invaluable educational tool for specialized college science courses, as well as for professionals in the field of biology seeking to sharpen their understanding of modern epigenetics. ... Areas of particular concern to Nader include consumer protection, humanitarianism, environmentalism, and democratic government. With grassroots democracy civic actions, green politics and left-wing politics, he is a reputed populist, harking to 19th century American populists and movements like Henry George's georgism, which he referred to in his 2004 presidential election platform. Bush (July 12, 1869 October 21, 1948) was an American businessman. His father was the wealthy industrialist, oil refinery owner, and yachtsman Rufus T. Bush. As founder of the Bush Terminal Company, Irving T. Bush was responsible for the construction of the massive Bush Terminal transportation, warehousing, and manufacturing facility in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, New York City which employed more than 25,000 people within its boundaries. Bush also commissioned Manhattan's landmark Bush Tower skyscraper on 42nd Street next to Times Square and funded the construction of Bush House in London. A prolific author, his life and works attracted attention from the national press, influential figures, and major publishers and journalists. Irving T. Bush's family name comes from Jan Bosch, a native of the Netherlands, who immigrated to New Amsterdam, now New York, in 1662. He has no known connection or relation to the Bush political family. Born in Ridgeway, Lenawee County, Michigan, a small town southwest of Detroit, Irving moved with his family at a young age to Brooklyn, New York, at the time an independent city. When he was in his teens, his father sold his Brooklyn waterfront oil refinery to Standard Oil and retired.. Irving T. Bush was educated at The Hill School, a boarding school outside Philadelphia, and joined his father's firm at age 19. The two-masted schooner yacht Coronet, a 136-foot (41.4 meter) vessel that Rufus had built during the mid-1880s, influenced Irving's life, for the ocean race between the Coronet and...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=7854940 ...
