Well worth reading
The Octopus by Kenn Thomas and Jim Keith.
A good book to read. Very interesting. I wish the likeable
Boy Scout would have listened to his friends who told him to
back off or he would be killed.
How I found this book was round about. I had attended a
lecture and it concerned the anti-inflamatory effects of Tylenol.
I read the section on Wikepedia and saw the name Casolaro and
asked myself, who is he? What did he have to do with Tylenol.
I went to the site Danny Casolaro and found about 8 to 12 pages
about him. Now days there are perhaps 3 pages there on Wikepedia
and most of it is missing.In any event, I read that he had perhaps
taken 2 tylenol from the drug screen and that was not enough for a
suicide. Further, he had cut his wrist 8 times on one side, right through
the tendons and 4 times on the other wrist, and from 3 years of
Forensic lectures, that is not suicide but murder. No one cuts through
his tendons. What in the world did he do, I asked myself. His dad was
an obstetrician and his brother was an orthopedist.I just had to keep
reading. Then he had a friend who is called Danger Man.He was trying
to get the government to give him back his software that is worth a lot of
money and probably too valuable for one guy to have in his possession.
Well, it is like a hydrogen bomb. I read on and saw that Mr. Danger Man
had to hire 4 lawyer to represent him in court.First Lawyer, Eisman
never got to court as he was shot and killed in his car. He found a second
lawyer John Crawford who died of a Heart Attack. A third lawyer was
hired, Paul Wilcher and he also died. Nothing written about how he died
but bad luck seems to follow his lawyers. The fourth lawyer was scheduled
to go before a grand jury but a few days before that was to happened,
Ian Spiro and his family, wife and three daughters were killed execution-
styled slaying. By this time, my hair was standing up. I asked myself,
who in the world was this Casolaro. I never heard of him.I read further
on Wikepedia and came to the part that stopped me cold. At the funeral
for Danny Casolaro, and it was raining too, his immediate family were
there; two figures in military uniforms stood off to the side and spoke
to no one. As the casket was being lowered into the ground, they walked
forward and motioned to stop lowering the casket. They wore their insignia
and regalia and were dressed for the occasion. One walked forward to the
casket and place two medals on his chest, they came to attention,
saluted Danny, about faced, and walked away to a car and drove away.
They never said a word.There is no record that he ever worked for
the government or the military. That is when I decided I had to get that
book and read a little more about this person.

Meandering and Muddled
I was surprised at the largely positive reviews of this one, which is the reason I'm posting a review myself.

After reading the numerous glowing reviews here, I bought the book expecting a tightly woven, fast paced read, but found the book poorly organized, sprawling and fairly inconclusive on many points. The actual experience of reading the thing (which is quite short at less than 200 pages) was tedious for me, almost a chore. It really frustrated me, because the true telling of stolen law enforcement software, government lawsuits, CIA spook meddling and a murdered journalist should be anything but tedious.

And, I REALLY wanted to like it too! Unfortunately, important characters and events are given little in the way of introduction or explanation, the chapters (and content within) are muddled and disorganized, and the overall argument is dificult to decipher and supported only weakly.

The book could've benefited by better authors with a more competent grasp of structure and delivery (Yeah, there are typos), and a few hundred more pages of hard research and structured content. The case deserves better handling than this.

Still, I recommend it, as it's pretty much the only game in town. But treat it a primer or a guide, not as the thrilling read it fails to be.

5 stars for subject matter and noble aims, but 2 stars for execution. I give it a 3 on the whole.

The Murder of a Hero
Danny Casolaro was a relatively wealthy individual who decided he wanted to become a writer.He already had a few articles published in various magazines when he first learned about the PROMIS software.Basically, PROMIS is a database program with amazing flexibility and statistical abilities and can also be used to predict future trends, submarine locations, etc.This software was developed by private individuals with some help in funding by the U.S. Department of Justice.However, the government decided to [take] the program instead of paying for it and began to market it as their own.This information is widely known and well-accepted and much documentation of this exists (including a successful lawsuit by the software developers that was later overturned on the flimsiest of grounds through the interference of the powers that be). However, when Casolaro set out to write an article about the robbery of the PROMIS program by the government, potentially to sell it to a computer magazine, the deeper he dug, the more sinister things became.

First of all, he learned that the DOJ had a backdoor added into the program so that the U.S. could access the files of whoever they sold the PROMIS program to, including the governments of Israel and Canada.This led to further revelations and meetings with various informants that further revealed a complex web of deceit leading down some surprising avenues.Casolaro now changed his plans to writing a novel, perhaps even presenting it as fiction in order to avoid scaring off publishers.But before this happened, Casolaro was found dead from what was an obviously staged suicide and many of his notes disappeared.

This very well documented book (that also verifies and is verfied by information published elsewhere) chronicles Casolaro's story, citing many excellent sources, including court records and affidavits.It also attempts to recover and recount some of the information about the conspiracy Casolaro began to call "the Octopus" because of its many, long-reaching tendrils.While it is not always clear Casolaro was on the right track (Casolaro himself often took note of what information seemed manufactured to mislead and discredit him), it is clear he was onto something big given his subsequent murder and its sloppy coverup.

Casolaro might have led a comfortable life as a mediocre writer publishing the occassional article, but because of his sense of justice and the need he felt to uncover the truth, he was ruthlessly murdered.This book is a wonderful epitaph to two courageous men (including co-author Keith who mysteriously died from knee surgery). ... A Sloppily-Done Piece of Garbage
Danny Casolaro, former part-owner of a computer industry newsletter, became deeply involved in investigating the alleged theft of case management software by the U.S. Justice Department for a proposed book. Along the way, his investigation widened to include Iran-Contra, the October Surprise, BCCI, the CIA and other entities, which Casolaro claimed to be part of a larger operation he dubbed "The Octopus."

Casolaro was found dead in a hotel room in 1991. From the circumstances, it is likely that he was murdered, and that whoever did it tried to make it look like a suicide.

The story of Casolaro, his investigation and his death makes a compelling subject for a book. […]

In several instances, a person's name is spelled two different ways in the same paragraph. As this was the revised edition, it was inexcusable for Thomas not to correct all the errors from the first edition.

[…] I wouldn't recommend it to anyone except the most paranoid conspiracy theorists. The definitive book on Casolaro should be left to the professionals and is yet to be written.

Excellent Book that mentions Radio Free America's Tom Valentine and James Norman, Sherman Skolnick would be proud!
Excellent book that uncovers the truth about who killed young Danny Casolaro and more importantly, why! Mr. Norman and Mr. Skolnick were both on RFA several times and the reader sould also look for Skolnick's books here on amazon as well! Pick Up on any that talk about the Nugan-Hand Bank, BCCI or the Inslaw case!

Questions. Questions. Questions
I read this book about a week ago and I have to say that although it was quite informative, it left many holes. Unfortunately, we may never know exactly what happened to Danny Casolaro because powers that be will prevent it from becoming public knowledge. The book was mostly a gripping tale about his life as he tried to expose connections between the CIA, drug trafficking, hollywood, and weapons procurement in a tax free Indian reservation. The book lost me when they added a chapter about Lady Diana which had absolutely no connection to his death other than the CIA knowing about it. Still if you want some forbidden knowledge, I'd recommend the book anyway. It is a fairly quick and easy read.

A terrible ratatouille
This book begins with an investigation into an attempt to corner the market for law enforcement software and ends with the death of Princess Diana and 9/11. One needs a formidably extended elastic to find a link between the latter events and the death of Dany Casolaro.
It is a very meager extension of L. Fletcher Prouty's book `The Secret Team'.
The only interesting pages are those explaining the PROMIS program (and backdoor software) and its ability to track movements of vast numbers of people around the world by tapping into the computers of, e.g., utility and credit card companies. Example: A sudden change in water consumption could mean that a person has `guests'.

I cannot recommend this book.

Important Book
If you read a good newspaper, watch the network news, get a weekly news periodical (all of which I do) and think you pretty well understand American politics (as I did) then you REALLY REALLY need to read this book.I have come to believe that one cannot possibly understand how this country operates by getting one's information from the mainstream press.

If you find some of the information a little hard to believe and you are tenmpted to dismiss it, you might want to try to do a search on the relevant topic.You will almost always find supporting information. ... Read more

The Nuclear Express
This is probably the most detailed and cohesive writing of the arms race and how each country acquired the bomb.A very well-written book.

An interesting and scary book
This book is a strange blend of technical and historical fact and political cautionary tale. These mixed motives are carried off with varying degrees of success.

As it was written by two insiders in the nuclear establishment, you'd expect it to excel in technical detail, and so it does. The entire history of nuclear weapons, from the moment that it was realised that a nuclear chain reaction was possible to the present day, is covered very thoroughly and comprehensibly, along with good explanatory appendixes. The technical information is pitched at the perfect level for intelligent laymen (and me) - comprehensive, but not overly complex (the technology of making fissile material go bang in a big way is extremely sophisticated). It is full of all sorts of fascinating nuggets of information - I hadn't realised that the nuclear generators in submarines had to use weapons-grade uranium (95%+ pure, as opposed to nuclear power stations' about 5% pure), because it was the only way to make them sufficiently compact.

Alongside this, the authors provide histories of the countries involved in the nuclear enterprise, of their motivations and of the people involved. To me, these were extremely interesting, and they seem generally accurate, with just the occasional hint of tailoring to fit particular personal or political agendas. Occasionally, there are historical goofs, such as Muslim terrorists being said to want to reverse the results of the Crusades. As the Muslims actually won the Crusades (a Kurdish gentleman known as Saladin was involved), I don't think that this is likely.

It naturally points out how the situation has changed. When countries possessed nuclear weapons, they naturally refrained from using them, as this would have been tantamount to suicide. However, terrorists do not have capital cities or major population centres or industrial complexes that can be identified and destroyed. Add to that the willingness, even desire, of some terrorists to become martyrs for some cause or other, and the fact that the collapse of the Soviet Union opened the possibility of terrorists obtaining weapons-grade nuclear material and even complete weapons. And of course there is the possibility that "rogue" states may make such things available to terrorist groups and look suitably innocent when one goes off.

For me, the most interesting thing is that, in the view of the authors, the "rogue" state to watch is China. The authors remind us of China's former greatness, when China sent large fleets of huge ships (which dwarfed Columbus's ships and even big sailing vessels such as Nelson's "Victory") under Admiral Zheng He to explore the world. These ships reached Africa and the Middle East (and perhaps even Australia, long before Tasman and Cook). However, the Chinese decided that the world was full of barbarians and unworthy of notice, so the big fleets came back and were burned, and China turned its back on the world.

The authors see China as seeking to return to its former world greatness by exploiting the nuclear situation. They believe that China would never attack the USA with nuclear weapons, but that it would be advantaged by such an attack. Having virtually no Muslim problem of its own (a small problem with the Uighurs in Xinjiang in the far west, easily fixed in the normal police state fashion), it can quietly make available nuclear information to dubious governments (Pakistan, North Korea) and others, knowing that this will be Someone Else's Problem, and believing that China will inevitably benefit from any misuse. The trick is to ensure that, when a nuclear device goes bang somewhere, your fingerprints aren't all over it.

This is a rather scary premise, but is it realistic? Impossible to say, of course, but the fact that the authors have long acquaintance with both the people and the facilities of the Chinese nuclear establishment means that they are not without basis for it. Chairman Mao famously said that the Chinese would be the beneficiaries of a major nuclear war because China's enormous population made the odds on its survival that much better. The authors believe that the present Chinese Government has a more sophisticated version of the same thinking. One hopes not. The book ends with an epilogue that describes how the authors propose to counter what they see as the dangerous double duo of China and Islamic extremism.

The book could do with a bit of editing. Some of the sentence construction is poor (and in some cases non-existent). Then there is the spelling. These are technical experts, yet "hexafluoride" as in "uranium hexafluoride" (the gas made as one step in the purification of uranium) is irritatingly frequently rendered as "hexaflouride", making it sound like a baker's ingredient. And I didn't think that even non-metallurgical Americans could misspell "nickel" ("nickle").

Interesting & Informative - Thought-provoking
An outstanding effort of chronicling the advent of the nucleur age - from the early days to (almost) today. Experienced readers may learn little (if anything) concerning the early period of the development of nucleur energy in Britain, the U.S. and Germany. But the addition of early nucleur development programs undertaken in the Soviet Union and Japan are less well publicized. You are left with the very clear implication that the description of the international "race for the bomb" was very real and was an endeavor that could have easily been won earlier by states bent upon international conquest.
What distinguishes this work from most of the other historical works I have read is the inclusion of the nucleur development programs by lesser states, particularly what are commonly referred to as "third world nations". The book gives quite a sobering illustration of how lesser states like Israel, India, Pakistan, and the numerous arab states have sought, completed, and are still seeking nucleur weapons of mass destruction. Of particular interest is the discussion of both China and North Korea's nucleur programs. Proiliferation of nucleur weapons throughout the world certainkly poses an unsettling risk to peace - especially when one considers the fact that newer nucleur states have already vowed to bury western civilization!
I rate this work quite highly, and strongly recommnend it to anyone curious about how nucleur weapons were developed and by whom, and how their proliferation throughout the developing world makes the likelihood of nucleur weapons use not only disasterous but quite inevitable. ... Read more

Lots of errors and hard to read screen-shots
This book was a major disappointment after having read other Maran Graphic books.There are alot of errors and the screen shots have been reduced down in size to the point where they are barely legible. Instead of putting the related subjects together, the book jumps around.For example, the book should put all of the "Request" statements together and all of the "Response" statements together.The authors were either in a hurry to get this book to press or just didn't know ASP.Net as well as they should have.You cannot teach a subject unless you know that subject like the back of your hand.

Lots of errors in the book
In learning a new language, its imperative that the book is 100% accurate, some of the code in the book was incorrect and caused errors.I emailed the publisher and eventually it was resolved.However, after losing confidence in the book, I can not recommend this book. I can recommend with five start the ASP 3.0 which they publish, which is my most used book, but this dot net version was a let down. If the book gets fixed, I would consider updating my review. The book does have other good information, but since there are no "bubbles" that say,, this code is bad, and will not work.. I would pass on this book until the revised.

C#.Net ?
This is an absolutely fabulous intro to .Net. I do agree with the other readers the title of this book is slightly misleading given that it concentrates only on C#. However the beauty of .Net is that it really doesn't matter what you're coding in, your money will still wind up in Bill's account.

What I like about this book is that it starts out with building applications on the command line witch gives the reader a bottom up view of how C# applications work. The reader is then transitioned to web controls. All of the examples shown are practical applications that only a web developer would be interested in so there is no wasted time on the learning curve. This book really doesn't get too deep into the .Net environment or language but it makes a good intro, especially for people like myself who are only interested in the web application side of C#.

Another thing that really works for me is the examples are laid out very clearly and the reader sees the code as it actually exists, so there are no difficulties with assembling the examples into a finished product. I am a visual learner and if you are as well you will find that this book's format works well. Less talk...more work. Great book.

Great Information, too broken up
This book is great at showing you how to do individual tasks with ASP.NET, but fails to bring it all together into a coherent picture of what a complete ASP.NET application should be like.If you want to quickly find out how to do one of the 130 or so tasks that this book covers (i.e. "Request Single Line Input", "Declare a Variable", "Work with XML Data Sources", and "Using Forms Authentication"), it is explained clearly.It also explains clearly the changes needed to migrate from ASP and VBScript to ASP.NET and VB.NET, from JavaScript to JavaScript.NET, and has plenty of C# examples.

I was misled by the title of the book, it's more of a set of building blocks than a blueprint.

Straightforward, Organized, Concise
This is a well written book. As a programmer I find that most books are either cumbersome references (i.e. Microsoft books) or are tutorials for the novice coder.

This book combines those two styles into a coherent and easy-to-read reference that gives programmers not only the tools necessary to create robust, flexible applications but the means by which to create them.

The authors have experience as programmers, architects, project managers as well as technical trainers. All these facets of their career show up in the style and content of this book. As a programmer on medium- to large-scale projects, I found this book to be very useful. ... Read more

Gives valuable information in one complete reference
Having previously read "Netware Professional Reference" by Karanjit Siyan, I hoped this edition would follow in the same light. This book is a real help for network administrators as it gives good examplesand solutions of day to day problems.

This book is designed as areference not a study guide.This is one of the best Intranetware books Ihave read to date.

Lonely Planet Argentina
This product was as represented and arrived in a timely manner.

Very outdated and not relevant
While typically we use Lonely Planet books as one of our references, this book was very limited in what it had to offer.The best I can figure out is that it is targeted at the very low end traveler - perhaps the hostel bound, under 22 years old traveler.Their recommendations were rarely accurate and as noted by others, out of date (i.e., closed, muchmore expensive, etc.)One place in particular, Puerto Iguazu (outside Iguazu Falls) was described as a lovely, leafy little place to stroll and definitely worth going out of your way for.It was one of the saddest, dirtiest little towns we had gone to in Argentina.Not to be critical of the town, Argentina has its share of poverty stricken areas which is not the issue, but more importantly, we paid $50 for a taxi ride into PI, only to find virtually nothing there.I suspect Argentina has changed dramatically since this book was written.

Useful & Practical, but Flawed
I used to swear by Lonely Planet (LP) Travel Guides, but this one has too many flaws for a solid rating.Yes, the book is nicely compact and practical, with useful information on lodging, local flavor, and getting around - particularly to and from airports and bus stations.I just returned from a month's solo travel in Argentina and LP was helpful, as it doubtless was for many travelers I met holding this guide.

But: Too much information in this guide (printed in 2005) is out-dated, and at this writing prices are often 30-40% higher than stated.Also, the guide misses many hostals and other lodgings.For example, LP lists just three places to stay in LaFalda (p. 276) and in Villa del Belgrano (p. 280), but these charming towns both have about a dozen.Why not list them, or at least insert a short sentence saying about how many inns a town has?Also, gringos currently wanting to see Iguazu Falls from Brazil's side need a Visa.

This guide has enough strengths to be quite practical, but enough flaws to mark it a clear step down from LP's often-stellar efforts.LP should correct this with more frequent updates and more exact information.

Not worth the paper it is printed on.
Lonely Planet misses the mark so badly on Argentina that there is no way anyone should give it a good review. The section on Buenos Aires is absolutely terrible. The free literature that our hotel left in our room was far superior to Lonely Planet's research. As a whole this guide book is geared towards homeless people that are for some reason traveling around South America. So many of the hotels that the book describes as "clean" are absolute dumps. If you do not book one of the "high-end" suggestions in Buenos Aires, I guarantee that you will not be staying in a nice hotel. Restaraunt and sight-seeing recommendations barely scratch the surface of what there is to eat and see in Argentina. In total, it appears that no work or thought was put into creating this guide book. Definitely not worth the money.

Good travel guide
This is probably the best travel guide out there for Argentina.However, I wish it had more information for Uruguay and more details about other areas besides Buenos Aires.I also recommend Time out Buenos Aires to help keep up with the new restuarants. ... Read more
