From the supplier: Late 19th-century American novelist Kate Chopin satirized women writers in three of her novels. The caricatures Chopin produced included that of a woman encumbered by housework and children who, nevertheless, strives to sharpen her literary craft. The typical female writer, as depicted by Chopin, was forced to produce unaesthetic melodramatic material for commercial reasons and consequently becomes dissatisfied as her attempts to become a serious artist are frustrated by the demands of the marketplace.

Product Description
The fragile, shifting, yet insistent space between memory and forgetting is the place where one is born and dies and lives acutely, summoning, listening. These poems make another mark in the tradition against erasure even as they long for the bliss of silence. This collection was twice a finalist in the National Poetry Series. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars from Rain Taxi Review of Books
"Memory is dyslexic. The legibility of the narrative we make of thepast becomes blurred, faded, or cracked.Who we "really" weredepends less on some idea of a stable, transparent record, than on thecontinually shifting process of identity itself.Even the metaphors we useto describe memory seem suspect. Is "information" really encodedin the brain as though on a book or hard drive?Given this, how can weguarantee the reliable transmission of our own histories? These are someof the issues Heather Thomas deftly interrogates in her first full-lengthbook, the haunting and austere Practicing Amnesia. . . . . One of the mostimpressive features of this book--besides the often stunning language--isthe way Thomas is able to shift registers between the personal and thepublic.Under the scrutiny of her gaze, the distance separating themnarrows. The history of her parents and grandparents--counterpointed withfamily photos--becomes the history not only of our era, but a movingaccount of the struggle to rescue presence from continual loss.Thomas hasskillfully absorbed the language-centered formalism of vanguard poetry, buther poems do not bow under the oppressive weight of abstraction. On thecontrary, there's a swiftness and sensuality at work here that give to thisbook a nearly tangible glow of plangency mixed with warmth.Amnesia maypressure history towards oblivion, but these poems postpone that end." ... Sean Thomas Dougherty has written a stunningly grittybook that leads the reader through the tenements, streets, andplaygrounds of Northern New England and Central New York.Doughertyis the poet of the small city, and in his new collection he offers thereader intimate portraits of the people who spend their days simplytrying to survive, of rooming houses where "each room is a heart, barely beating," and teens who spend their nights cruising theboulevards looking for "rolled-down-window waltzes/ ofred-light-chance-encounters."He infuses the stories of these liveswith a lyric intensity that moves beyond the performance realm. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars New Jersey Urban
When I first read this novel in 1999, I never knew what a young, up-and-coming Generation, X or Y'er could do to wield the power of poetics in his work. Sean-Thomas Dougherty, whom my mentor Lorna Dee Cervantes recommended me to, isan underlooked prize for anyone looking for something different, yet meaningful in contemporary poetry. His words are performance-based tinging upon the conscioussness of street-slang, hip-hop or rap, but maintaining that elloquence of the "classical," literary tradition of form and diction in post-modern poetry. His "personal," experiences are locked in the contradiction of one who remembers things events, people, etc. merely as a dream, yet to the reader there is no gap in finding a sentimental connections between the speaker and his environment. As I know it, this gentleman is nearing the age of thirty, launches the New-Jersey Literary Journal entitled, "The Red Book Review." His writing is colorful, yet painfully "real," fans of Selby jr, Bukowski, Kerouac, as well as Quincy Troupe or just a fellow Hip-Hop fan, should take note. Dougherty provides a wonderful landscape of a youth in his New Jersey, street setting. ... Read more

Product Description
From 1837 to 1861, Thoreau kept a Journal that began as a conventional record of ideas, grew into a writer's notebook, and eventually became the principal imaginative work of his career. The source of much of his published writing, the Journal is also a record of both his interior life and his monumental studies of the natural history of his native Concord, Massachusetts. In contrast to earlier editions, the Princeton Edition reproduces the Journal in its original and complete form, in a reading text that is free of editorial interpolations but keyed to a comprehensive scholarly apparatus.

Journal 6 comprises a single manuscript notebook of nearly five hundred pages that Thoreau filled between March 9 and August 18, 1853. During this period, Thoreau divided his energies among his increasingly professional studies as a naturalist in Concord, the revision of his Walden manuscript, and surveying, which provided him a living and established him more securely as a contributing member of the Concord community. Thoreau's writing and his understanding of natural history were enriched by surveying, which gave him the opportunity to regularly observe seasonal occurrences and other natural events in and around Concord. Thoreau recorded these observations in his Journal, making both literary and scientific use of them. Substantial passages from Journal 6 were incorporated into the sixth draft of Walden, and its observations formed the basis for later compilations of field ecology. They are made available here, along with Journal entries, completely unrevised. This volume will delight all custodians of literary and natural history and be an essential addition to the libraries of all Thoreau devotees. ... Read more

from RESURECTION PAPERS:

In the Undifferentiated Country of Shadows

Would you like to dance? I ve a book illustrating the stance.

In the first picture, her hand covers her mouth because the photographer likes the look. Years later, she does this unconsciously when she has something to say. In Russia, every tombstone has a picture of the dead.

Would you say your image contains or ruptures you?

Nuclear bombs line the seabed and a man walks the moon. Her child s image emerges from a wave of sound. She thinks all that mourning was a form of anger or the way the brain s biochemistry can make you sad.

Which memory is being yourself and which another?

She writes a procession of evocative captions: The child pouring water into the birdbath wears an olive-green dress trimmed in velvet. The dress has a pattern of small black scrolls.

When were the days that belief made words reach the dead?

Six hawks cruise over the river. The first three vanish on a rooftop hidden in trees. Others soar on wind above the rapids, wings tilting and balancing to ride the currents, dark bodies spread to light at the pale tips, dipping into the bare March thicket.

Shadows leap the gully, creek, median strip. That endless darkened hallway. In the thinning light of the garden, arborvitae make feathery sentinels.

Grandmother Kitty has taught her perfect enunciation. As the water turns milky, she steps on stick legs into the bath. By evening she is covered with soft gray feathers and makes a mournful sound.

Seeing ourselves from outer space, we are the alien.

Resurrection Papers is a book of transgression the transgression of the individual subject by family and social strictures, the transgression through such death into existence, the transgression of language as prescription into language as desire. It is a book ultimately of freedom of being set free through language.

The author writes:Resurrection Papers is a hybrid poem sequence embracing the idea that to think and live consciously and passionately one must walk alongside death. The poems erupt from what I call a ''convergence of urgencies'' that allows anything into the charged moment of the poem and includes multiple forms. They occur as fragment, lyric, dramatic monologue, prose unfolding, and ''found'' journal entries, both narrative and disjunctive in style. I wanted a ritualistic feeling and drew on ritual and myth from several sources, including the Day of the Dead. I also drew on the contemporary myth-making form of news headlines, sometimes used aphoristically.

Resurrection Papers questions and renews the region between dream and wakefulness: Dream the space of sleep and death but also of one s most fervent imaginings and desires. Language the utterance of desire, which might even ''kill'' a girl. The other side of language silence, loss, absence as it confirms her death. A woman's waking must be a ''difficult emergency.'' Renewal occurs in part through the very medium that kills her. The sensuality and eroticism of desire in language enact this rebirth. I want this work to reinscribe through poetry a region in between life and death in order to reclaim a sense of the sacred and to restore it into the woven ongoingness of living and dying. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars good eating
My family loves Mexican food and this book has everything they love. I will enjoy making meals for them using the recipes in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A favorite
I purchased this book a few weeks ago when looking for recipes for Cinco de Mayo. It is now one of my favorites out of my many Mexican and Latino cookbooks - the recipes are simple and turn out well. They may not be the most low fat recipes, but the editor stayed well enough away from ChiChi's fare. Mexican cooking appears to require much oil - blend the recipes from here with those in 'Latina Lite' for better health.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy To Follow And Easy To Prepare
I have purchased several cookbooks from Heather Thomas. She simply has the skill to explain cooking in a non intimidating way. Every publication of Heather Thomas that I have purchased is excellently illustrated withphotos, which help make it easier to understand the whole process fromstart to finsih. This has brought my guests and me a lot of pleasure. Ifyou have previously been a failure in the area of cuisine mexique, you willgain selfconfidence after reading and cooking with this book. I highlyrecommend it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Picture Book or Recipe Book?
I bought this book because I wanted step-by-step instructions and I like to see a picture of the finished product. In this respect, the book is a success. However, I was confused by the hodge-podge way the text, ingredients and procedures were presented. The photographs were not as helpful as I had hoped and the lay out very artsy. Please note there is no Nutrition Information Per Serving available. And don't forget to stock up on oil.My suggestion is to try a different book, unless you need something pretty for your coffee table. It did make me realize that I really should buy some more festive dishes ...
