Excerpt: Ed McClanahan (born October 5, 1932) is an American novelist, essayist, and professor. Edward Poage McClanahan was born in Brooksville, Kentucky in 1932 to Edward Leroy and Jesse (Poage) McClanahan. He attended school there and later in nearby Maysville, Kentucky where the family relocated in 1948. McClanahan graduated from Miami University with a B.A. in English in 1955 and from the University of Kentucky in 1958 with a M.A. in English. McClanahan taught English at Oregon State University, 1958-1962. He received a Wallace Stegner Fellowship in 1962 and remained at Stanford University as E. H. Jones Lecturer in Creative Writing until 1972. During his time at Stanford, while also known by his Hippie moniker "Captain Kentucky," McClanahan became good friends with author and fellow Stanford attendee Ken Kesey. McClanahan was an active member of Kesey's band of Merry Pranksters. His memoir, Famous People I Have Known, humorously recollects many of his Prankster experiences. McClanahan later taught at the University of Montana (1973-1976), the University of Kentucky, and Northern Kentucky University. He was released from his contract at NKU before receiving tenure, which allowed him to complete his most recognized novel The Natural Man. Following Kesey's death in 2001, McClanahan edited Spit in the Ocean # 7: All About Kesey, a collection of stories, poems and essays about Kesey. A solid reference any who want to raise horses should embrace

Disappointing
I purchased this document in the hope of reading an academic account of the relationship between Shakespeare and his beloved Metamorphoses. I was disappointed to find that the document was a brief book review. Had I read the fine print on the Amazon page, I would have learned this, but I was gullible enough to assume that a detail of that importance would be publicized.

The article itself is well written and presumably offers an intelligent review of the book in question. I doubt, however, that this two-page document is worth the $5.95 that I paid for it. ... Read more

Good reference for novice and expert alike
It is obvious the author has a passion for her subject. She has dedicated her life to cows and writes with effectiveness. "Raising and Handling Beef Cattle" is easy to understand for novice and expert. We bought a dozen copies for our local 4-H club.

slow delivery
i had to send an e-mail to get the book. they shipped it right away then. i know stuff happens it was no big deal, just my account was debited right away which i think needs to be adjusted. the money should not be released till the shipment is sent.

This book saved my bacon...
I am a novice rancher who bought 37 calves at an auction.At one point I had 15 sick calves on my hands, primitive corrals, and the whole town laughing at me.Tonight, I can honestly say the worst is past.My brother and I doctored ten bad eyes, saved a bloat case, doctored a footrot immediately and effectively, and saved at least five extremely ill pneumonic calves, while vaccinating, branding, and eartaging the whole bunch.Without this book and the thorough, intelligent, and courageous instructions it gives to the cattleman, I would have lost a good part of my herd, all my joy for ranching along with them.As it is, the town isn't laughing anymore and starting to wonder where we came up with all those good ideas they're seeing popping up on our place.

If you plan to raise beef cattle- this is a MUST HAVE NOW!

Heather Cox is not the author of this edition.
The 2000 editon by Heather Cox is top-notch.It is excellent in both content and readability with bright illustrations and wide margins for plenty of space to take notes.

The reason I am giving this such a low number of stars is because this listing is in error.I was looking for the edition authored by Heather Cox which was published in 2000. I bought one on [...] (thrift books)that was advertsied as by Heather Cox and published in 2000, but I was sent this edition which was authored by John S. Wetzel and published in 1985.This edition will not go with the other materials such as the Lab Manuals by Heather Cox.

I have not read this edition, but I have it now.Thrift Books did not have the edition I paid for and did allow me to keep the book sent in error, which was listed for $[...], but I paid about $[...] for shipping.
