5-0 out of 5 stars Hallucinatory translations of genius?
Indeed they are.

There are lands and textures and frequencies few dare explore, fewer still are the wordsmiths, their fingers laced with magic and whorls ornamented in terrible and rich dreams, who return from chaos with such beguiling tales to tell. Cisco is one of the few. The music that issues from the 14 doors in this volume of bar-raising short works is among the finest in contemporary weird literature. Unsettling or haunting, these gifts of imagination transport the reader to districts in close proximity to the master of the modern weird tale, Thomas Ligotti.

This exceptional collection belongs on the shelf of every lover of fantastic literature.

Product Description
Educating Citizens reports on how some American colleges and universities are preparing thoughtful, committed, and socially responsible graduates. Many institutions assert these ambitions, but too few act on them. The authors demonstrate the fundamental importance of moral and civic education, describe how the historical and contemporary landscapes of higher education have shaped it, and explain the educational and developmental goals and processes involved in educating citizens. They examine the challenges colleges and universities face when they dedicate themselves to this vital task and present concrete ways to overcome those challenges. ... Read more

Product Description
"So many categories!" Andy Warhol would complain during his rigorous, nearly obsessive daily shopping regimen of antique stores, galleries, auction houses, and flea markets. Though best known as a proponent of the avant-garde, Warhol was also passionately engaged with the historical past, an interest which found a direct yet imaginative expression in the serious collecting he undertook from the mid-50s until his death. "Possession Obsession" proposes that collecting was another form of artistic practice for Warhol, one that provides as much insight into his interests, tastes, and ideas as do his other myriad art forms. Accompanying essays examine the how, why, and what of Warhol's collection, the crucial role it played in his life, the aesthetic quality and historical associations of the objects themselves, the psychological and sexual aspects of collecting, other artists' use of collecting, and the relationship between collecting and mass culture. Also included are Robert Mapplethorpe's photographs of Warhol's home, with an introduction by Patti Smith.

4-0 out of 5 stars cool concept
I bought this as a gift for my girlfriend, who loves Warhol (although now it seems everyone loves Warhol). She was not very intrigued by the book, even though she also loves collecting knick-knacks.So I looked closely at the book trying to figure out why, and I have to say that the book just doesn't have enough in it.I think that the text is well written and shares some interesting anecdotes, and philosophical/psychological discussion of collecting, but that's not really why I thought the book would be cool.I think we wanted to see those Time Capsule boxes opened up, more shots of his home (there are some, but not many), and then there is a whole chapter on random people who collect things--why is this chapter included?Do I care what some unkown goofball finds interesting?I think this book was a great concept, but it falls flat in my mind. ... Product Description

A daring reporter’s quest through the “living history” of Islam amid the War on Terrorism.

In 1991, a British university student spent his summer break fighting alongside Kurdish guerrillas in northern Iraq. Now a prize-winning reporter and author of a book on al Qaeda, Jason Burke travels from the Sahara to the Himalayas and meets with refugees, mujahideen, and government ministers in a probing search to understand Islam, and Islamic radicalism, in the context of the “War on Terrorism.” Praised by London’s Daily Mail as “intensely personal and accessible,” this is the gripping story of a search for answers to some of the most urgent questions of our time: What drives Islamic fundamentalism, and how should the West respond? Are we so fundamentally different that we can’t coexist? Although much of his book concerns war and violence, Burke reaches the optimistic conclusion that extremist violence alienates its populations and so is doomed fail and wither away.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perceptive and nuanced analysis
Jason Burkes "On the Road to Kandahar" is a an intensely personal story of a professional reporters ten years of travelling and reporting from conflict in the Islamic world. Its perceptive and nuanced analysis and genuinely emphatic approach to the "war on terror" is refreshingly free from all of that gung ho propaganda and deliberately one sided commentary that taints so many of the books on this subject. It is also an extremely well written and easily accessible text, well suited as a first introduction to this extremely complex subject, to be followed up by more comprehensive studies. But also to the knowledged and well read reader it provides important nuances and thoughtfull new insights. A valuable book that is highly recommended. Simply a good read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Insight in to the Islamic World
I was impressed with a pace that Jason Burke established in reporting his decade or more of travel through Southwest Asia (Pakistan/Afghanistan) and Middle East. His optimism and hope stays alive throughout his various first hand encounters with horrific events. His book provides a very different viewpoint compared to the ones that I was able to follow through the USA based newspapers and magazines reports for the two post 9/11 wars (USA/Aghan War or USA/Iraq War II).He does not pretend to be a scholar and is certainly not biased in his analysis.I would recommend this book for folks who want to get a better insight of the Islamic World and all the precieved and real dangers surrounding it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Burke's Travelogue
I read Jason Burke's Al-Qaeda: Casting a Shadow of Terror, and found it the most factual book on the events surrounding 9/11.So, I had high expectations and was hopeful for further updates from his previous 2004 publication. As other reviewers have noted, this book is a travelogue and personal memoir of Mr.Burke's travels around the world, rather then an analysis of the Middle East.

Admittedly, I'm impressed with what has kept Mr.Burke busy the last 2 decades. But, there was nothing ground breaking or amazing here. The entire book comes off a bit flat, and shallow. If you're looking for a fun(relatively speaking), walk through the Middle East since 1990, then this book may entertain you.I was looking for more info on the "War on Terror", and didn't find much in here.

A much better travelogue through Afghanistan (albeit, without the political analysis), is Jason Elliot's An Unexpected Light: Travels in Afghanistan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Any collection serious about Middle East issues needs ON THE ROAD TO KANDAHAR.
ON THE ROAD TO KANDAHAR: TRAVELS THROUGH CONFLICT IN THE ISLAMIC WORLD could have been featured in our Travel Shelf section - but it's so much more, and shouldn't be limited to a leisure travel-reading audience alone. Jason Burke spent a decade among Muslim people in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Thailand and other areas: his guide explores their culture and concerns, blending first-person experiences and encounters with interviews with a wide range of people, from Taliban officials and a former torturer for Husseun's intelligence service to a suicide bomber and an American sniper in Iraq. It's these varied encounters from different cultures in the area which offer eye-opening insights and cultural revelations not to be missed. Any collection serious about Middle East issues needs ON THE ROAD TO KANDAHAR.

5-0 out of 5 stars Part Travel Book, Part Intellectual Travels, 100% Well-Written
This is an excellent and informative book that's also a joy to read. Burke reports for Britain's "Observer" and he spent a decade covering stories in places such as Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Algeria, and Turkey. He often found himself in the middle of complex acts of violence, and this book is part travel memoir and part intellectual memoir as he struggles to understand what it all means.

I look for a few specific things in a good piece of travel writing. First, it needs to be well written, and Burke crafts strong, clear, concise, fast-flowing writing. He writes like a journalist, which means he trades flowery metaphors for sharp, direct statements. His descriptions of characters and places capture both the details and the mood, which ends up being vital to the points he wants to make. I also want a writer with insight. The author certainly needs to show insight into the cultures he encounters, but if self-exploration is also a goal, he or she also needs to show personal insight. Without insight I'd rather read a Lonely Planet guidebook. I liked Burke's approach. He is honest about his knowledge of other cultures, and he admits what he thinks while also staying aware of his lack of understanding. He describes violent acts and acknowledges that the deeper conflicts often prove to be too old and twisted for him to fully grasp. As for personal insight, Burke goes looking for that only in order to understand the conflicts he experiences. He might explore his own reactions under enemy fire, but it's only to better understand the nature of violence. This isn't a work of "spiritual travel" or a man's search for meaning, but it recognizes that any questions about the nature of violence require an understanding of your own nature. Finally, I have to like the author. Reading a travel book is like sharing a journey, and Burke seems like a cool guy--impressed with his travels without becoming arrogant, tough without going macho on the reader, and knowledgeable without needing to be an expert. He never once annoyed me, which is a bit of a rarity in travel writing (and in real travel).

As for the ideas in "On the Road to Kandahar," I think it's fair to say that Burke ends up with more questions than answers. More accurately, he ends up with the same deep questions and only some preliminary answers, but he also learns how complex and troubling the original questions were. He wants to understand what motivates violence in the parts of the Islamic world he has visited, and what the end result of it all will be. The travel writing helps collect information for the first question. He talks to would-be suicide bombers, Kurdish resistance fighters, and Taliban sympathizers--many of them unlikable and unsavory characters--and tries to get at their motivations. He tries to piece it all together into a coherent understanding. He brings up the stress of change, and how the clash with modernity causes conflict in previously peaceful cultures. He discusses al-Qaeda's philosophies and how satellite television and the internet have allowed these philosophies to modify the grievances of local cultures. He explores how cultures react after they accept violence as an answer, and after they see the results of that violence on other cultures and on their own culture. He realizes that 99% of the world simply wants to get by and live life--to raise children and enjoy friendships and have enough to eat and drink each day.

And, finally, he sort-of comes to an optimistic conclusion--that cultures end up turning against violence. He sees much of the conflict in the Islamic world as a short-term answer (even if "short-term" means one hundred years), a trial attempt to solve problems with suicide bombers and violent revolution, and sees it all fading away once the cultures turn against it. I say "sort-of" because Burke is far from convinced, especially after experiencing the closeness of the London bombings. In the end, it's the best answer he has right now. And, in the end, it's this combination of intellectual honesty and optimism--and its telling in an exciting and engaging way--that helps make this such an outstanding book. ... Read more

Product Description
If you are in information technology and you have the ambition and inborn drive to be among the very best--or if you need to engage an IT consultant and want to know how to recognize the best--this book is for you.In most fields, a consultant is an expert who provides advice and guidance. Implementing the advice is up to the client. In information technology, the term "computer consultant" covers a wider range. Business expertise is frequently an even more critical element of the delivery than technical expertise. Because implementation of the consultant's advice may require highly specialized skills, the consultant may offer to manage a team to perform some or all of the IT work that needs to be done, or may even offer supplemental staff for a client. But at the other end of the spectrum, some people call themselves computer consultants when their work is exclusively technical, such as programming or network design.Exactly what is a consultant in the field of information technology? What's the different between an ordinary computer consultant and one who stands out above the crowd? If you want to be an exemplary, top of the line consultant in the IT field, what do you need to do? This book addresses these questions.Contributors include Jerry Weinberg, who is practically legendary for his keen insight, and Steve Epner, founder of the Independent Computer Consultants Association. Each chapter explores a different aspect of what it takes to be a truly excellent computer consultant and provide the highest levels of value and service for clients. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for consultants new and old
If you're already a computer consultant or thinking of getting into the field, this book is definitely for you. It's filled with advice from 12 successful consultants from all kinds of business and technology backgrounds. I wish there were more books out there like this, and I really wish I'd had a book like this when I was starting out.

There are plenty of books that break down starting a consulting business into a series of steps and procedures: 1) Incorporate, 2) Build your Documents, Timesheets, etc., 3) Hire a lawyer/accountant; basically business 101 stuff that would apply to nearly any kind of business. This book builds upon those lessons with the bigger problems we face, finding clients, staying marketable, keeping up with technology, and building a profitable practice, generating predictable cash flow, etc.

Computer consultants almost always come from technical backgrounds; usually as former employees who decide to branch out on their own. Technical by nature, we often get so focused on how cool the technology is that we lose sight of business needs/problems and the people management aspects of our projects. By far the best way to learn these skills is to seek out others who have done it before and ask them how they did it. These 12 authors definitely provide a good start. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review
Flash MX offers the interactive Web designer a suite of powerful features, and Flash MX Magic describes how to use them in a solid, tutorial-based approach. Fourteen topnotch designers penned this compilation, covering a variety of intermediate and advanced features.

To make the most of this inspiring book, the reader should have Flash MX installed. The opening chapter covers Components, an important new feature in Flash MX that allows a designer to create modules that can be dropped onto the Flash stage. Components is an important new feature that changes how Flash movies are designed, making it much easier to build, integrate, and reuse parts, and the fact that they are featured in chapter 1 signifies this. Components are used in almost every subsequent chapter, covering such subjects as preloading movies, building interactivity using ActionScript, and adding database interactivity.

All the data and project files needed for each chapter are included on the CD-ROM, along with finished versions of each project. Also included are demo versions of Flash MX, Director, Dreamweaver, and FreeHand. Like other books in New Riders' Magic series, Flash MX Magic is rich with color screen shots, concise language, and clear explanations. These are not books for the casual Web coder, but for the serious Flash designer who intends to make the most of the medium. --Mike Caputo ... Read more

I was disappointed to find that the .fla files that the book says the disk contains were not actually there! I want my duckets back.

1-0 out of 5 stars Looks good...
on the outside and when you browse through it looks to be pretty concise, the problem lies in the fact the book and cd don't match, I've seen other reviews that say they received no .fla files I have the .fla files but the work files are actually the same as the finished files except for the small fact that they don't work (code is exactly the same from what I can tell actionscripting wise but the examples never work and I spend more time deciphering the mistakes to double check my work than I do learning the ideas.Maybe they should have made this a bug testing book at least you would have a chance to learn something.

2-0 out of 5 stars I could't see the point of the book
i had tryied this book for about 2 weeks, i do agree that a lot of codes are not really working, poorly explain the reason why should we du that, and the code itself is very hard to follow even just trying to copy it from the book to the action window bcoz there is no line indecator there.

i am not really sure if this book is for begenner, intermidate, or advance flash user, since some workshop are just as simple as the tutorials that come with the software, but some are very long and hard to understand

this book is not to teach readers how to use the shoftware(or it just fails to teach), and also is not a book of creative idea that will help us out when we run out of idea while designing

that's why i said " i couldin't really see the point of the book"

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad investment...
Throughout the years I have read many goob and bad technical books. What I can say about Flash MX Magic is simple, do not purchase this book if you realy want to learn or master Flash. I'm still looking for a book that teaches in an easy and clear way. I have wasted my money on this book.

In overall don't fall in the trap by purchasing Macromedia Flash MX Magic.

1-0 out of 5 stars MX magic is not magical
First I give two huge thumbs up for the two previous books Flash 5 and 4 Magic. I will not say the same for Flash MX Magic. Unfortunately I wasted a weekend trying to understand chapter 14 in this book. The files on the CD and the updates didn't match the files in the book. This book ONLY teaches through example and poorly explains the thought process on why and how things work. The mistakes are so often and so irritating you wonder if the book was ever proofed before publishing. The best metaphore I can come up with is a cook book where the ingredients are mixed and matched from different recipes andyou have to guess whether or not you mix, stir or even cook the ingredients to come up with your final product. I lost a weekend of my life to this book. I want my weekend back! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent hiking guide
I enjoy all of the Winnett books because they are accurate, fun to read and reliable. This book has little chapters on over 100 trips in the Sierra range, and the descriptions of each trek are a total delight. So often these hiking books neglect to tell you how to reach the trailhead and oftentimes they don't provide detailed instructions. Winnett never makes this mistake. You will not need a separate map to locate any of the trailheads, his maps and written instructions are first-rate. In fact, there is even a nifty fold-out map sewn into the rear pocket so you can tote it along on any of your journeys. Equally interesting is that this book doesn't merely give elevation gains, difficulty ratings and desriptions of the trail conditions. These are vital to know, but Winnett also includes little bits of information of what kinds of wild flowers you will encounter, birds, wildlife and other little nuggets neglected in other guides.

The book is supposed to be only for overnight backpacking trips, but there are many trails here that can be used for day hikes. These trips will be in the 10-16 mile range and any strong hiker can easily do these hikes in one day. If you do choose to go the multi-day backpacking route, Winnett describes water sources, camping sites and addresses whether bears or marmots might be a problem for you. Most importantly, he tells you where to find water and whether the water source is reliable throughout the whole year.

I can't recommend this guide highly enough. Even if you're an armchair hiker, you'll derive many hours of vicarious joy from this guide.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Trail Book
My wife and I are a Volunteer Trail Crew in Los Padres National Forest,Ventana Wilderness. We maintain 12 miles of the Pine Ridge Trail, and spurtrails, between Big Sur Ranger Station and Sykes Hot springs (with lots ofhelp from friendly hikers). I also have a full time day job so my leisuretime is very precious. I enjoy exploring new areas for backpacking andcamping but I want others to do the legwork and report the best trails, soI rely on good trail books.

Sierra South covers selected better trailsin Sequoia National Park, Kings Canyon National Park and John MuirWilderness. It meets most of my demands for identifying the better hikes toexplore in aconvenient easy to use book. It provides good directions to thetrailhead and good descriptions of the trails, camps and attractions alongthe way. It provides a description of how strenuous the hikes are and has aneat graph to show the gain and loss of altitude over the distance for eachtrail. It has a small "take out" folded map showing the trailsand trailheads and it has a convenient table summarizing information on allthe trails to help with your selection. It is small enough to carry on abackpacking trip. I use It and I recommend it for others.

On the downside: Updates to trail information is provided on a page in the back of thebook (easy to overlook/forget). The map does not have elevation contours(you still need to buy a contour map). The description of how to use thealtitude gain and loss graph is located in the Maps chapter (hard to find)instead of in the Introduction chapter with the other information on how touse this book. There is no small single page map showing the generallocation of all the trails; therefore, you must take out and unfold thelarger map each time you want to check a location.

There is a companionbook titled "Sierra North".

5-0 out of 5 stars A great guidebook
This is a wonderful guidebook with very helpful information about some ofthe best hikes in the southern Sierra. It's not just a good guidebook, butis also just plain fun to read. The pictures are nice as well. The includedmap is decent, but could use a little help.

I really like how differentpaces for the hikes are given, leisurely, moderate, and strenuous. Also, information about what season the hike should be take, early, mid, andlate. Also, all the topo maps needed for the hike is given. Introductionsto various geographic areas is given as well.

One thing I was reallydisappointed about, though. The description of the Mt. Whitney Trail fromWhitney Portal to the summit is pretty poor. I thought they might describemore about the summit, this being the tallest mountain in the contiguousU.S., but maybe I'll have to wait until I get Secour's "HighSierra". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Topical, lively and entertaining: a good read
The Algonquin Round Table meets the internet: The Internet Is Always Right is engaging, communal, interactive, topical, insightful, kinky, and funny (Adam Kraemer, a great comic voice). It reminds us of the power of words (Sarah Ficke educating us on blogs) (Joe Redden Tigan on their power to lead/mislead) (Jason Gilmore's criminal with an unfortunate name) and how they can be placed as commanders of the internet and other communications technology. Procopio's gathered a tribe worthy of the name 'intrepid.' The contributing authors venture into the best use of the internet--unexplored to a great degree--and that is always right. Good job! ...
