Product Description
F. Scott Fitzgerald was an artist of extraordinary literary talent who tried to synthesize the ideas and events around him and give them personal expression. And, he was more than that. He and Zelda were personal participants who defined and helped to shape much of what is American. Their lives and American life are so intertwined that they seem impervious to an unwinding. They defined the Jazz Age through self-advertisements; then, Scott gave the epoch its name. Americans generally were obsessed with clever advertising and easy money in a booming stock market. But there is more, much more.

Fitzgerald's life and novels continue to personify the great contradictions in American culture and in American capitalism. Fitzgerald's novels-especially The Beautiful and Damned, The Great Gatsby and Tender is the Night- can tell us about our past but just as much about the present and our future. Notably, Scott had originally set Gatsby in the Gilded Age, an age of excesses similar to those of the 1920s. Today the Casino Economy-beginning in the early 1980s and becoming global-has remarkable parallels to these earlier epochs.

Then, the inevitable; the crashes came. A banking panic in 1907 ended the Gilded Age though not the gild, the Crash of 1929 ended the Jazz Age though not "all that jazz," and the collapse of the technology-driven Nasdaq in 2001 brought an end to the most notorious players in the Casino Economy though not its legacy. Zelda, on the precipice at an earlier age than most supposed then or since, crashed shortly after the stock market. Although the public was unaware of Zelda's plunge, only the Great Depression upstaged Scott's "crack-up." As he dispassionately acknowledged, his literary reputation had gone the way of the economy, as had his earnings from the Saturday Evening Post that sustained his little family.

Though Scott's novels have long been on required reading lists around the world, Fitzgerald and Zelda's cultural presence ebbs and flows. There nonetheless was, of course, a "first" Fitzgerald Revival. It came during the early 1950s-being first literary, but inevitably leading to a renewal of his cultural significance. The Fitzgerald Revival now underway is, if anything, even more confounding because it follows some serious academic studies, yet derives its inert velocity from the vibrant personalities of Zelda and Scott, while its deeper significance once again is properly attributed to Scott. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An Welcome Addition to Libraries ofFitzgerald Fans
While F. SCOTT FITZGERALD: UNDER THE INFLUENCE does not ignore Fitzgerald's life, the authors use it to in part explain why Fitzgerald had such a good grasp of the competing economic theories of his time. What makes this book significant, however, is that the authors' primary purpose is to establish that Fitzgerald's works reveal that he "possessed a boldness of intellectual grasp that extends into the economic realm."

Just how much of Thorsten Veblen's The Theory of the Leisure Class is reflected in The Great Gatsby as well as in other works, for example, is thoroughly detailed. And the significance of Gatsby "look[ing] with vacant eyes through a copy of [Henry] Clay's Economics while at Nick's house is illuminating.

Perhaps it required such authors as one who has written a book on Wall Street capitalism as well as a novel and an economics professor who teaches interdisciplinary studies to give literature lovers further insight into Fitzgerald/his works and toconvince those who see him as "merely" an intuitive wordsmith that "Fitzgerald deserves more intellectual credit than he received at the time or since." ... Product Description

After the Sharpeville massacre of 1960 precipitated a popular uprising and the subsequent arrest of the ANC's military wing, organized opposition to apartheid within South Africa was eliminated. For 30 years the ANC led a shadowy existence in exile and its most basic problem was one of survival. This book offers and explanation of how the foreign relations of the ANC contributed to its survival and looks at the closely related issue of how the ANC's alliance with the South African Communist Party and the support of the Soviet Union solved the problem of how to continue financing the armed struggle.

Examining the ANC's diplomacy in action, Thomas shows how the liberation movement attained its main diplomatic objectives - the mobilization of international support for mandatory sanctions; the arms embargo and the diplomatic isolation of South Africa; and the translation of international opposition to apartheid into support for the ANC as the sole legitimate representative of South Africa's oppressed people.

5-0 out of 5 stars Masterful gothic writing
This book is among my favorites in the genre. I collect ghost stories and must stay that this one has gems that I would match up to anything M.R. James and E.F. Benson ever did.

5-0 out of 5 stars "...a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore"
You won't want to read these stories at midnight, or on nights when the wind makes the trees creak and moan. What a spooky little collection! These eighteen stories are full of mystery and nightmare.

Several of the tales involve the return of the dead, to right a wrong or for nefarious purposes of their own. In "The Franklin Stove," for instance, a young girl is witness to the harsh revenge of her Aunt Hattie's dead sister. "The old woman shudders. 'Ohhh, my bones feel like icicles.'" Be careful what you wish for, Aunt Hattie!Other stories tell of madness ("Pistols And Rain" and "Joseph Warren's Invention") or inhuman evil ("A Million Dying Leaves" and "The Collector In the Mill.") Each has its own dark twist.

The final story left the most vivid impression on me: "The Second Parsonage." A New England schoolteacher in the early 19th century cultivates the art of keeping secrets, and discovers the most mysterious and earth-shattering secret of all. What does he find in the ledgers stacked floor to ceiling in the abandoned parsonage? Would you be able to keep such a secret?

Scott Thomas writes in a style that's both spare and poetic, true in tone to the 18th and 19th centuries. The tales vary in length from about 350 words to 20+ pages and each is well-paced for its length. The New England weather and landscape are integral to the stories, though the descriptive passages enhance and don't overwhelm. Several of the stories are told in the first person and each narrator has a distinct voice and personality, as do all the characters.

The subject line of this review invokes a Grand Master of the dark short story. Scott Thomas offers us his own "quaint and curious volume," and I recommend it to anyone in the mood for the quiet creepiness of a good scary book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightfully Chilling...
This is the first book that I have read by author Scott Thomas. And I must say that even though this book comes from a small publisher, it is definitely deserving of wider distribution and publication.I am an avid fan of ghost stories, and without a doubt "Midnight in New England" is one of the most hauntingly beautiful books I've had the pleasure of reading. I had chills the entire time. I felt as if Thomas was an old soul living in a time where he does not belong, he himself, haunting the present as he is haunted by the past. I look very forward to reading more of Scott's stuff.

If you are reading this review, definitely give this book a try, you won't be sorry. ... Read more

"A magnificent novel. Courage and honor in the face of the enemy have not been so brilliantly portrayed since the great novels of World War II."
-Jack HigginsAmazon.com Review

Thomas Young on The Mullah's Storm

When writing fiction, your best work may come from what scares you the most: you take pen in hand and imagine the worst. When I first flew into Afghanistan, what scared me the most wasn't the thought of getting shot down and killed. It was the thought of getting shot down and not killed.

For most aviators, an encounter with the enemy usually happens in the form of lights streaming up from the earth. It has an air of unreality about it, almost like a video game. If those lights don't hit you, they don't hurt you. But what if you had an airplane blown out from under you and you met the enemy on his terms, in his territory? What would you face on the ground? What would your buddies need you to do? Under conditions of extreme duress and hardship, would you make decisions you could live with later on?

When I went to the Air Force Survival School years ago, an instructor gave a briefing I have never forgotten. He said, "Every Air Force flier shot down in Vietnam, captured, and dragged to the Hanoi Hilton sat right here in this auditorium and thought, 'It won't happen to me.'"

I still think it won't happen to me. But if it did? The Mullah's Storm is an imagining of that fear.

The book's action begins with the downing of a C-130 Hercules in Afghanistan, set at an indeterminate time in the war. It could have happened in 2001, or it might not have happened yet. A shoulder-fired missile blows my main characters out of their normal world and onto a journey that forces them to disregard personal safety and even personal loyalties for the sake of the mission.

My fears have become reality for some service members, and the characters in The Mullah's Storm are composites of people I have known. One of those people was an early mentor and squadron mate who had served as a Marine Corps helicopter crew chief in Vietnam. He enjoyed target shooting, and I assumed such an avid marksman would also be a hunter. But when I invited him to go duck hunting, he declined. He said, "When I was shot down in Vietnam, I learned what it felt like to be hunted. I have never hunted anything since."

Though my colleague's Vietnam ordeal echoes through the book, the characters draw their motivations and mindsets from veterans of the current wars. These service members, all volunteers, come from the best-educated military ever fielded. American troops have more skill and training than ever before, and their leaders have more confidence in them. They have more individual responsibility, and in extremis, more ability to act alone when necessary. They are not cynical, but neither are they naïve about their missions and the mistakes of those who send them on those missions.

Another difference with today's military is the greater contributions of women. Their presence as part of the team no longer raises eyebrows; in fact, it is taken for granted. My novel's female character, Sergeant Gold, was inspired by the women with whom I have served. Those real-life military women include some of the best pilots, navigators, and flight engineers I've known.

Other characters are from a U.S. Army Special Forces team. As a C-130 flight engineer, I often had the pleasure of working with Special Forces. Sometimes we flew SF troops during their parachute training, dropping freefall jumpers from so high that they breathed from an oxygen bottle on the way down. In addition to their other military skills, each SF soldier is fluent in a foreign language. Those guys are very smart and very tough, and I've seen them face awful conditions with spirit and humor.

I could have set this novel, or one very much like it, in Iraq or even Bosnia or Kosovo. But during airlift missions over Afghanistan, I was struck by the stark beauty of the country as seen from the air: snows of the Hindu Kush, great distances of mountains unmarked by so much as a dirt path, cold and clear night air lit by a meteor shower, rural expanses so dark the stars appeared not as scattered points but as silver dust.

The book contains scenes of violence, and sadly, that reflects reality, both past and future. Afghanistan may never completely rid itself of insurgents and warlords, jihadists and opium traffickers. The Taliban will not show up on the deck of the USS Missouri to sign an instrument of surrender. Even if American forces end combat operations tomorrow, the country will need humanitarian assistance and airlift support into the foreseeable future. Whether U.S. troops stay or go, this will be a long war for the Afghans.

Though the idea for The Mullah's Storm had been knocking around in my head for a while, it took an in-flight emergency to get me started on the actual writing. In August of 2007, I was part of a crew flying a routine airlift mission into Osan Air Base, South Korea. On the way, we lost a hydraulic system and a generator. We declared an emergency and landed safely, greeted by the flashing lights of the crash trucks. When we taxied to the ramp, the aircraft dripped a trail of hydraulic fluid.

After we shut down, we learned we'd be stuck for days, waiting for parts. So with time to kill at Osan, one morning I went to the Base Exchange and bought a yellow legal pad and a cup of coffee. I sat on a couch in aircrew billeting, and I wrote at the top of the pad, "Chapter One."

--Thomas W. Young

1-0 out of 5 stars Negative stars if I could
The book would have been better if Parsons, the narrator of the story, WOULD have killed himself during any of the times he was thinking to himself "I should shot myself." Mr. Young don't take readers through a predictable read to an ending about your oh so scary (sarcasm intended) near death hydraulic emergency landing as you inspiration for this. What was Marwan up too??? What did the Mullah Know???? You trivialize and do a disservice to those who serve with everyone being super human. I am sure in the real Afghanistan everything doesn't go your way. Come on Parsons is a cripple and he fends off 3 of the 5 wolves who attack Gold and him????? The wolves were really bush league filler and was the final straw to this having any credibility as you explain this story was made up of composites of reality.I got the book from the library, I'm thankful I didn't pay for it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Read!
I found The Mullah's Storm by Thomas W. Young to be an exciting story of terrorism and adventure. Young wrote fantastic descriptions of what the heros had to go through and under what conditions. It was very well written for a first novel I didn't want to put it down! The ending was somehwat of a let down because I felt it could have used a more definate conclusion. I look forward to reading more from Young.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Story-- Page Turner
I liked the story and Thomas Young did a good job of making you feel like you were there.I would have given it 5 stars but there is one part of the story that I didn't find believable. I can't sya what it is without giving away to much of the story.Other than that I really enjoyed this book and read it in 3 days.

3-0 out of 5 stars Politically Correct Military Thriller
Predictable military thriller about a male USAF navigator and a female army interpreter who make their way across wartime Afghanistan. It's well written and I compliment the author in keeping the sexual attraction between the protagonists implied rather than explicit.

The books two problems are: (1) the predictable plot (well, after all it is a thriller) and (2) the misguided motives of the protagonists who blame 9/11 on Islamic insurgents thus ignoring the US false flag operation that entrapped and controlled them. It sure makes the two protagonists look stupid.

3-0 out of 5 stars A decent military thriller; didn't quite close the deal...
Disclaimers:
(1) Going back to the days of "Hunt for Red October", I've not been a big of the military thriller genre
(2) Like the author, I've accumulated an alarmingly high number of flight hours in multi-engine military aircraft (maritime patrol, not transport).
(3) I'm writing this while working in Kabul.

So I may be a little harsher than the average reviewer.

I loved the concept of this book, and looked forward to diving in to it. Unfortunately, turns of the plot turned a little to convenient to advancing the story line early on, and stayed that way throughout.

If the protagonist had not conveniently grown up in hunting and hiking in the Rockies, then his short course of Air Force survival school would have made his adventure in the Hindu Kush much more challenging, he would have had far fewer chances to pick off bad guys at long range later in the story. There is an encounter with a wolf late in the story that may be metaphoric, but left me wondering: plane crash...blinding winter storm...insurgents...did he really need a wolf attack too?

Little is revealed about the mullah prisoner's interpreter, Sergeant Gold, and we learn little about navigator Major Parson other than his immediate personal struggle with those who have died around him during this mission.

I wanted to know more about the people in the story, and less about the weather.

In the end, I couldn't suspend enough disbelief about the events of this book. Thomas Young's writing is crisp and almost spare, but I needed less narrative about the terrain and more insight into the characters.

This book is a classic and I found it to be very informative.A significant portion of the data is obsolete and therefore should be taken in that perspective. If you work in this field you will find this book of worth. It also offers a perspective into the pioneering attitude of CSIs and latent print examiners from 'back in the day'.If you have read the FBI science of fingerprints and survived, you will love this textbook.Untill 2005 this was required reading for the IAIs Crime Scene Analyst certification exam.I assume they pulled it in favor of more up to date material.

3-0 out of 5 stars In 1978 it would be 5 stars for sure!
This book is an awesome text for anyone who conducts crime scene investigation. The reason for the 3 star rating is the sad truth that this book is simply out-dated.Originally written in 1978 it was ahead of its time.Unfortunately it has not kept up with the advances in technology. The book is full of references to film and and cameras that are no longer available as well as suppliers that no longer exist. The book is written from a practical use viewpoint that is rare under any circumstances.I read this book as a requirement for the International Association for Identification Crime Scene Analyst certification exam and enjoyed it very much.Anyone who investigates crime scenes or conducts processing or comparisons will find this book of value. The book is comprehensive in that it discusses comparison, lifting prints, taking inked prints, fingerprint kits and equipment, chemical processes and case studies. The IAI has phased this book from its required list due in part, most likely to the fact that there is simply too much information that is out of date. Some things are still right on though.Fingerprints are unique and persistent! If you are interested in the science of fingerprints this one should be in your library. ... Product Description
Visually beautiful and historically important, the Spanish missions of the United States are a unique legacy of two very different cultures.Conceived as an expression of the Catholic faith of the European conquerors, they were built and maintained by native Americans, who incorporated their own traditions.A Sense of Mission presents 29 of these fascinating and popular churches in Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, and Southern California. More than 150 color photographs feature dramatic exteriors and grounds, altarpieces, statues, carvings, frescoes, and other folk details. The text explores the history of the missions, how they were built, and the meaning behind their symbols, while an introduction by N. Scott Momaday lends insight from the Native American perspective. Visitor information, maps, and an annotated reading list round out this handsome, authoritative guide of more than a decade. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Gorgeous Picture Book
A Sense of Mission: Historic Churches of the Southwest, is a beautiful book. Its pages are filled with lovely color photographs of Spanish Missions all over the Southwest territories and plenty of information behind each church. Fascinating!I used it to learn a lot fro the book I am writing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Museum of Mission Photography
This book features superb photography of the historic Catholic missions built in the southwest states and California. The beautiful photographs, many of them full-page, are of exterior and interior views of the missions, as well as closeups of architectural and artistic details.A short written history accompanies each featured mission, and although there are some mentions of the historical personages and events connected with the missions, most of the histories refer to the physical aspects of the missions such as their construction, remodeling, etc. This is a great coffee-table or armchair traveler book, but one will need to look elsewhere for a serious study about mission history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous!
I purchased this book after a recent visit to the Santuario de Chimayo near Taos, New Mexico, which is one of the churches it features. The photos are absolutely gorgeous and provide an excellent feel for the incredible beauty of these wonderful, historical buildings. The bookcovers everything from each church's unique architecture to the fascinatingfolk art that can be found within. ... Product Description
Antipatterns are an emerging and controversial new area in the patterns community. Where design patterns identify different types of procedures, designs, or code that worked in object-oriented projects, antipatterns target those common mistakes, defects, errors, or difficult people that can sink object-oriented projects and systems. Configuration Management (CM) is managing the evolution of a software project - managing the revisions or changes to the product after it is first released. This phase is important in a product's ongoing life-cycle because CM helps to ensure that all improvements are implemented in a timely and accurate fashion. In addition, CM ensures that product testing occurs and is accurately documented so that the test findings can be incorporated into improving the design of the product with the next version. This book continues where the first book on antipatterns by this author team left off. In the first book, they focused on the areas of design, architecture, and management, in other words - people issues. With this book, they focus on the area of Configuration Management and document over 20 antipatterns and ten design patterns that exist during this stage of a product's development. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Provided little value for me
While I'm involved with CMM and SCM I thought the book had too much abstraction and not much meat. I didn't see much value nor takeaways to pass on to my colleagues.

3-0 out of 5 stars Easy Read
An easy skim which serves as a decent reminder of the importance of SCM. It highlights some areas for attention, and provides some tips. Most of the scenarios should be familiar. Its usefulness is that it may reach a broader audience than a textbook, so you can pass it around for discussion.

3-0 out of 5 stars No big shakes yet helpfull
Sometimes a book only confirms the things you already knew, either consciencly or subconsciencly. This is not necessarely bad. I you run into a customer that violates every good practice that you're aware of, you can use the book to convince your customer that he's wrong and you're right. After all, all good ideas look a lot more impresive when they are printed.

Apart from that, it's fun reading.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not on par with their last work
Sequels are tough. The original AntiPattern book was light, funny, and right on the mark. It was a tough act to follow. This offering, that shares a couple of the same authors as the original AntiPattern books, falls short.

There is a hint from the authors themselves that this isn't a seminal work. The preface tells readers they can hunt for their particular antiPattern but "We suggest that it is better for you to read through the entire book now (it's not that thick)". Indeed it is not. At just over 300 pages, it is formatted such that about 1/3 of that space is either blank or large cartoons and pictures. So, while it might appear to have the same "heft" as the original, looks are deceiving.

The book suffers from two major problems: a lack of depth and poor editing. The original antiPatterns book is cited no less than 18 times in this work. Borrowing from past efforts and quoting yourself isn't necessarily bad--but it isn't a substitute for new material. Curiously, Steve McConnell (Code Complete, Rapid Development, etc.) is quoted almost as many times--far more often it seems than any other reference. There is an entire industry to draw from. Why such emphasis on just two sources?

Finally, the editing is dreadful. Terms and acronyms areintroduced without definition and the general flow of the text is awkward much of the time. This book needed an editor!

Because there is so little written on CM from a management perspective I'm inclined to give the work 3 stars instead of my usual 2 stars for a flawed work. While there certainly are problems with this book, they fall mostly into the category of "missed opportunity" instead of erroneous information.

4-0 out of 5 stars More helpful than most SCM books
After reading these guys' first book (AntiPatterns - which I liked a lot) I was hoping to find this one as much fun to read, and as insightful. Ialso knew that, as a SW pro, I needed to get smarter on SCM (I'd beenavoiding the topic "successfully" and faking it for too long). SoI figured it was a no-brainer...As with the first book, I resonated withthe material and got a lot from it (I liked the Domino Effect AntiPattern, which my company could be the poster-child for). But this book isn't asentertaining/fun as the first one, and I don't think it was edited ascarefully. But it's still great for SW pros who know they aren't really asup on SCM as they should be and just can't get through massive booring"textbooks" that they bought and are still on their bookshelf (Ihave at least three). It's entertaining enough that you'll get through it,and your sure to see some SCM mistakes you're making or have made and wantto avoid. I think their last book was a tough one to follow, and theypicked a really tough subject. So my recommendation -- buy it, and readit... it'll help you.Just don't expect it to be as much fun as theirfirst AntiPatters book. ... Read more
