Product Description
In today’s market, secure software is a must for consumers. Many developers, however, are not familiar with the techniques needed to produce secure code or detect existing vulnerabilities. The Software Vulnerability Guide focuses on the origin of most software vulnerabilities, including the bugs in the underlying software used to develop IT infrastructures and the Internet. Most of these security bugs (and the viruses, worms, and exploits that derive from them) started out as programmer mistakes. With this easy-to-use guide, professional programmers and testers will learn how to recognize and prevent these vulnerabilities before their software reaches the market. For each of the 30 common software vulnerabilities featured the authors provide a summary, description of how the vulnerability occurs, and famous examples of how it has been used. Tips on how to find and fix the vulnerability in software are also provided along with source code snippets, commentary, tools, and techniques in easy-to-read sidebars. This guide is a must-have for today’s software developers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended if you care about Quality Software
Unsecure software is always poorly written/low quality software. This book will help you identify problems and provide the insight necessary to write higher quality code.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellant intorduction for a new comer in this domain
This book has quite good coverage of topics and simple to follow.
References and follow-up/conclusion were useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for software developers
Every month, hundreds of security vulnerabilities and warnings are announced. Although they cover a wide set of products and programs, the underlying reason for them is generally the same: insecurely written software. When software is written in insecure code (which includes most software programs written today), serious security flaws are inevitable.

The Software Vulnerability Guide was written to help software developers acquire the methods necessary to write secure code and find existing problems in current software. After making a persuasive case for secure code in part one, the book progresses into the areas that are crucial to writing secure software.

Part two of the book covers system-level attacks and details important topics such as passwords, scripts and macros, and dynamic linking and loading (DLL). Part three plunges into attacks on the software, exploring heady concepts such as buffer overflows, format-string vulnerabilities, and integer overflow vulnerabilities. Most of these attacks have been known for decades but are only receiving wide-scale attention now.

Further chapters delve into securing data and Web servers. For each of the vulnerabilities mentioned, the authors describe how they occur and how to prevent them.

An enclosed CD-ROM contains software examples described in the text, plus various open-source security software testing tools, including Ethereal, Nessus, and Nmap. Any business serious about writing secure software should ensure that all of its code writers receive a copy of this book

5-0 out of 5 stars Very concise and helpful
I've maybe read three or four books on the subject of software security and this is the best so far.Very concise and well organized and covers just about every facet of software vulnerabilities that I've ever heard of.Very helpful too because at the end of each chapter it gives detailed advice on how to avoid the vulnerability that they discussed. Also, the CD comes with some nice tools and source code.I definitely learned a lot from this book and highly recommend it to both web application and desktop application developers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A guide which includes a CD-ROM with source code and many tools described within
Herbert H. Thompson and Scott G. Chase's Software Vulnerability Guide comes from a security director and a security architect, drawing upon their combined expertise to consider techniques developers need to use to produce secure code in modern software. Developers and testers receive both tools and assessments of tools designed to help recognize and prevent common vulnerabilties in source code. Commentary and code examples pack a guide which includes a CD-ROM with source code and many tools described within. ... Read more

Product Description
The Rum Diary was begun in 1959 by a then-twenty-two-year-old Hunter S. Thompson. It was his first novel and he told his friend, the author William Kennedy, that The Rum Diary would "in a twisted way...do for San Juan what Ernest Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises did for Paris." In Paul Kemp, the novel's hero, there are echoes of the young Thompson, who was himself honing his wildly musical writing style as one of the "ill-tempered wandering rabble" on staff at the San Juan Daily News at the time.

"I share a dark suspicion," Kemp says, "that the life we were leading was a lost cause, that we were all actors, kidding ourselves along on a senseless odyssey. It was the tension between these two poles -- a restless idealism on one hand and a sense of impending doom on the other -- that kept me going."

The Rum Diary is a brilliantly tangled love story of jealousy, treachery & violent alcoholic lust in the Caribbean boomtown that was San Juan, Puerto Rico, in the late 1950s. "It was a gold rush," says the author. "There were naked people everywhere and we all had credit."Amazon.com Review
"Disgusting as he usually was," Hunter Thompson writes in this, his 1959 novel, "on rare occasions he showed flashes of a stagnantintelligence. But his brain was so rotted with drink and dissoluteliving that whenever he put it to work it behaved like an old enginethat had gone haywire from being dipped in lard." Surprise! Thompsonisn't writing about himself, but one of the other, older, aimlesslycarousing newspapermen in Puerto Rico, a guy called Moberg whose chiefachievement is the ability to find his car after a night's drinkingbecause it stinks so much. (I can smell it for blocks, he boasts.)The autobiographical hero, Paul Kemp, is 30, trapped in a dead-end job(Thompson wound up writing for a bowling magazine), and feeling as ifhis big-time writer dreams, soaked in Fitzgerald and Hemingway, areevaporating as rapidly as the rum in his fist.

In fact, Thompson was only 22 when he wrote The Rum Diary, but hisfear of winding uplike Moberg was well founded. What saved him was the fantasticconflagration of the 1960s, a fiery wind on which the reptilian wings ofhis prose style could catch and soar to the cackling heights ofFear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Puerto Rico in 1959 doesn'thave bad craziness enough to offer Thompson--just a routinedrunken-reporter stomping by local cops and a riot over Kemp's friend'stemptress girlfriend, a scantily imagined Smith College alumna who likesto strip nude on beaches and in nightclubs to taunt men.

Thompson's prose style only intermittently takes tentativeflight--compare the stomping scenes in this book with his breakthrough,Hell's Angels--but it's interesting to see him so nakedlyreveal his sensitive innards, before the celebrated clownish carapacegrew in. It's also interesting to see how he improved this full versionof the novel from the more raw (and racist) excerpts found in the 1990collection Songs of the Doomed (available on audiocassette, partly narrated by Thompson). --Tim Appelo ... 5-0 out of 5 stars TECHNICALLY HIS FIRST NOVEL...GOES TO PROVE HIS GENIUS
Since this novels publication in 1959, before its author gained mainstream popularity, The Rum Diary has been overlooked in terms of its literary value. The novel; however, which describes the plight of 30-year-old
journalist Paul Kemp, is making a comeback.
Within the past ten years the book has been put back into print to satisfy the growing fan base of its author, Hunter S. Thompson. Currently being adapted into a feature film set for release in 2008 and starring Johnny Depp (a close friend of Thompson's who also starred in 1998's "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.), The Rum Diary is sure to gain additional exposure in the coming year

4-0 out of 5 stars Learning to Go Gonzo With Young Dr. Thompson
The Rum Diary, written when Hunter S. Thompson was 22 years old, shows the early evolution of his trademark "gonzo" style. The novel lay unpublished for years until recently, and is now being made into a film starring Dr. Thompson's close friend Johnny Depp. I can't wait to see it.

The novel is loosely based on Thompson's experiences working as a journalist in San Juan, Puerto Rico in the late 1950's and early 1960's. I lived in the Virgin Islands, spent a good bit of time in San Juan, Vieques and St. Thomas, and was greatly impressed with Thompson's crackling descriptions of the local color. The story presents a more accessible, human side to the author, blown so far over the top later in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (with hysterical results). The origin of "Fear" is here, as are the roots of his later writings, and that alone is worth the price of admission.

"Here I was, living in a luxury hotel, racing around a half-Latin city in a toy car that looked like a cockroach and sounded like a jet fighter, sneaking down alleys and humping on the beach, scavenging for food in shark-infested waters, hounded by mobs yelling in a foreign tongue - and the whole thing was taking place in quaint old Spanish Puerto Rico, where everybody spent American dollars and drove American cars and sat around roulette wheels pretending they were in Casablanca." Buy the ticket and take the ride.

3-0 out of 5 stars good, not great gonzo
for a first novel from a brilliant writer who never made it as a novelist, this was pretty good.a few nice sketches but that does not add up to a full story.for completists only.

5-0 out of 5 stars An a-typically candid look at the author as a young man
With it understood that the book went through several rewrites and editings for posterity and that, while much of the material parallels Hunter Thompson's own experiences in the Carribean, it is not a biographical account, this is one of my favorite books. At the risk of inflaming any Salinger fans, this book is to me what "Catcher..." is to alot of folks. The largely aimless wanderings of a young man, the volatile surroundings and situations, the eclectic group companions, even the inevitable monotony and bordom that punctuate his time in the story, it's all so eerily familar. It certainly isn't the insane romp that F&L in Las Vegas is.In fact, it's written with much less of the mad-cap edge inherent in most of his books. But it's that absence of the fantastic, I think, that makes this book such a touchstone. It's very honest, it's somethimes very unflattering, it's fun, it's impermanent... it's, I think, everything that those "formative" years are when you set out to live your life knowing only that don't want what you've seen growing up.A series of "misfires" and "could-have-beens"; misperceptions and obscure opportunities that sometimes end up with us escaping, to one degree or another, the proverbial sinking ship with the bag we came with and handfull of stories.I close this book like you'd close an old photo album, you shake your head, you smile, you think "it was fun while it lasted"...It may not be such a profound experience for you but it's a great read none the less.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book on it's own terms... very interesting to HST fans
This is a good fun read and is better than much of the sentimental over-written pretentious drivel that gets fawned over these days. Rum diary is a good young man's novel even if you knew nothing about the author. It's got an irony, irreverence and underlying post-adolescent dread to it (the narrator is supposedly 30, but he reads younger imo) reminiscent of Mike Nichol's "The Graduate." But the real pleasure in my opinion is reading it as a: portrait of the gonzo as a young artist. This is a book to enjoy reading critically (assuming you've read other HST) -- you can see Thompson working thru influences and poses, you see him searching for his voice often putting on a bogus tough guy tone that's trying for hemingway but is just ersatz mickey spillane and then suddenly he'll hit his stride and describe some cheap sex on the beach in perfectly pitched anti-lyric deadpan. You get a look at the soft white underbelly of HST, too -- there's a sensitive novelist guy here you really don't see (who is in fact denied) in HST's later work.If you're into HST the counterculture legend/journalist, read HST the young novelist -- it's illuminating and even a bit painful. ... Product Description

The eruption of Mt. Pinatuba represented more than the smothering of America's Clark Air Force Base and many of President Corazon Aquino's development plans. It also served as a metaphor both for the collapse of Philippine-American base negotiations, presaging an end to nearly a century of strategic relations, and for Aquino's unsuccessful attempt to undo the colossal damage of the Marcos era and construct coherent development programs. This book explores the connections between two central functions of third world governments - development and security - in an analysis of Aquino's six crisis-filled years.

Scott's original intent for these essays was to link together literary temperaments as dissimilar as those which are included in this volume and to trace the moral and religious teachings of the various writers, however, his rambling spirit took him far afield and rather than keep strictly to a sermonic theme he has done so in an incidental fashion. Mike Mignola's character has never been more popular, especially in the wake of the long-awaited feature film, and unprecedented success in bookstores. His award-winning series Hellboy has been lauded as much by other artists as it has by award ceremonies and fans. Over the years, many of the best artists in the industry have asked if they could do a backup story just to get a chance to play with the characters and worlds Mignola has created. As Dark Horse basks in the glow of critical praise for the 2004 Hellboy motion picture, we present this lavish collection of stories. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars mix bag from hell
Liked Hellboy Weird Tales 1 better than two. The stories in volume 1 are all excellent except "the children of black mound".Which seemed not related to the Hellboy series. All the art are distinct in styles but the characters are consistent. Not only Hellboy but Liz Sherman, Abraham, Roger, Katie Corrigan, other members are great too. Hellboy is tough and raunchy but also compassionate and a good leader. His right hand symbolizes his mythical power. The left hand, the gun. All together there are thirteen stories. Funny stories, puzzling stories, scary stories, realistic stories, symbolic stories. Everything is here. (After reading this one I was curious about Roger which had only comical role in the story. So, I went for next book.)

5-0 out of 5 stars ahhh... the artwork..
as some of the other reviews stated already, mike mignola didn't do any of the art or stories in this collection. that being said, this is a great collection of stories that have different takes on the characters, and the art especially but all still have the hellboy feel. the artwork is awesome. there is a variety of styles and mediums. i especially liked the colored pencil. there are some old lobster johnson comics in the back, along with pencil sketches from two artists, an afterword by mike mignola and some extra hellboys pics from the other artists. the stories are really entertaining and some parts made me laugh out loud. all in all if you are a hellboy fan you will enjoy this collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader
Weird Tales was a famous old magazine that turned up a lot of legends, so the title is a homage to that particular publication.

Mike Mignola lets some other people play with his character, and there are some pretty amusing things happen to him, as a girl chases him, a band harrasses him and other fun.

There are also stories featuring other BPRD luminaries.

3-0 out of 5 stars Twelve Different Hellboys and a Crustacean
You reaction to the Hellboy compendium will have a lot to do with when you realize that none of the work included is Mike Mignola's.If you are simply a Hellboy fan and knew what you were buying when you bought it, you will most likely enjoy this effort by Dark Horse Books. If you didn't look closely (or failed to read the reviews), and specifically like Mignola's work, you may be disappointed.Unfortunately, I fall in the second category, having grabbed this off the shelves during a buying spree.

I'm not going to launch into an oration about publishers who profit by imitating (even if it is imitating themselves). There is a special place in hell for them and that will suffice. But behind the nicely done cover art there are only a few cases where the art is up to Mignola's standard - Jim Starlin, Simeon Wilkins, and Kia Amasiya. The others are pretty original, and one, done by J. H. Williams is interesting on its own right. But if you are looking for Mignola's severe, dark graphics, there isn't much here.

Writing varies considerably as well. I liked Love Is Scarier Than Death, Theater Of The Dead, and Toy Soldier the best. You get stories, some extra sketches, a long inclusion - A Lobster Johnson story - that left me cold, and some obligatory explanation about why this really is a Mignola comic book even if it isn't.Obviously there are people who would disagree with me, but this just falls short of the Mignola magic, proving, if nothing else, why he is as respected as he is.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hellboy Seen Through The Eyes of Others
Hellboy has become a huge success and creator Mike Mignola is busier than ever.So what do you do when the public wants more of your character than you can safely create? You invite other artists to put their own spin on things. This volume is a collection of such stories.

Midnight Cowboy - A young Hellboy gets into trouble at Area 51.
Haunted - Hellboy investigates a supposedly haunted house but finds no trace of ghosts but they find him.
Family Story - Hellboy is doing research and discovers some strange goings on in the family that owns the library.
Hot - Hellboy investigates something that is scaring people out of some Chinese hot springs. The Water Sprite he finds awakens the horn in him.
The Children of the Black Mound - Cold hard reason squares off against ghosts, legends and religion.A tale of a young historical figure.
Big-Top-hell-Boy - Hellboy investigates a cunning array of circus ghosts and find a curious property of his right hand.
Flight Risk - Aces of the jetpack vie for altitude records but some rather large bats may have other ideas.
Hellboy & Co in Downtime - Hellboy has tackled some evil entities in his time. Now he must face his ultimate challenges as he goes up against the office copier and the soda machine
Abe Sapien Star of the BPRD - Hellboy is just a musclebound bulk while Abe Sapien is the one who really brings home the sushi (I mean bacon).
Hey, Hey, Suckers! - Hellboy returns from a gala and can't help boasting and rubbing it in.
Curse of the Haunted Doily - Kate faces her mom's ghost
The Dread Within - Liz vs Possession
Still Born - Hellboy attends a dangerous birth in reality and in his dreams.
Party Pooper - Hellboy's birthday party

This is a fun collection. The stories vary between the silly to the dark and eerie.Art styles also cover most of the spectrum from the beautiful pencils of Hot to the cartoonish Hellboy and Co in Downtime.A must read for any Hellboy fan. ... Read more

Product Description
In this entertaining and informative look at the Highland dirk, author Christopher Thompson examines a number of Scottish historical and oral sources to document the role of the knife in Gaelic society. Although worn by all classes of society, the dirk was the primary weapon of the common clansmen, and since it was worn indoors as well as outdoors, it was the favored weapon for acts of revenge and self-defense. Highland Knife Fighting traces the historical roots of the dirk, which is believed to be descended from the medieval ballock dagger, and provides step-by-step instructions and photos in how the Highlanders used the knife. Lessons include holding, carrying and using the dirk with a sword and targe; choosing the proper guards; responding to sudden attacks from in and out of distance; using the dirk for the seven principal "bone-breakings"; and executing the throw from Highland wrestling. Also included are exercises and drills, including the advanced quickdraw drill, and combative techniques of the Scottish dirk dance positions. ... Read more

More information about this style of fighting can be found from the Cateran Society.

Overall a great book !!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A-26/B-26 Invader
The Army Air Force/Air Force really confused a lot of people, past and present, by giving this plane the same designation as the B-26 Martin Marauder. This plane built by Doulgas Aircraft, was designed to replace the B-25 and Marauder. First flown July of 1942, it ran into developmental problems and delays associated with new designs, huge factory orders before the first plane has flown and creating new factories to build the planes.

Just over 2,200 were built ( about 1/2 the number of Marauders). It gave good service in the Pacific and Europe, arriving just in time for the end of the war. It served well in Korea as a light bomber, night bomber and a counter-insurgency role in Vietnam. A good design, obviously one that allowed a lot of varients, flexibility and success.

There are many excellent black and white photos showing every aspect of the plane, inside and out. Captions are good, line drawings and 8 pages of color photos. Good mix of narrative/history of the development and deployment of this plane, along with pilots stories that put you there. I recommend this book for any serious aviation fans to want to have a very detailed book about an overlooked plane which contributed to the Allied victory.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book I ever read
I found this book to be precisely accurate.A must read for anyone interested in these beautiful airplanes.Thompsons' work amazes me everytime.Check out his other great books, including Final Cut, B-25 Mitchell in Civil Service, and B-17 in Blue. You will not be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Douglas Invader A-26/B-26/JD-1
wonderfull book, full of information and details. i flew in right seat as plane captain/aircrew in Navy JD-1 '51-53 towing targets for Navy
fighters, F4U Corsairs, F9F panther jets and PB4Y-2 Privateer bombers and Navy ships at sea. Greatest time in my life. I have been collecting Invader books, photos and details for a long time and this book is a welcome addition. Sadly none of the 140 JD-1 Navy invaders survived the scrappers torch. But, i have my books and memories.

Excerpt: Aaron Helmer Sele (born June 25, 1970 in Golden Valley, Minnesota) is a former Major League Baseball right-handed pitcher who is currently the minor league pitching instructor for the Los Angeles Dodgers. His family moved to Poulsbo, Washington, a Scandinavian town on the Kitsap Peninsula, where he pitched for North Kitsap High School. Sele was drafted out of high school in the 37th round by the Minnesota Twins, but he chose to attend Washington State University where Bobo Brayton was the baseball coach. John Olerud was a pitcher in his last year at WSU when Sele was a freshman, and he gave Aaron some advice on pitching. Another incoming freshman was catcher Scott Hatteberg. During Sele and Hatteberg's three years at State, they won three conference titles. In Sele's sophomore year, 1990, the Cougars ended a surprising season ranked 18th in the nation. Sele won his first seven decisions and finished at 12-3 with 2.22 ERA. He was named a third-team All-American by Baseball America. In the summer of 1990, Sele pitched for Team USA and shut out the powerful Cuba national baseball team on 3 hits and 8 strikeouts. Listed at 6'5" and 205 pounds, he was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the first-round (#23 overall) of the 1991 Major League Baseball Draft. He had a team-best 4 complete games at Winter Haven and also pitched in the Florida Instructional League. He was a co-winner of the Tony Latham Memorial Award for player with the most enthusiasm. Sele advanced quickly through the Red Sox farm system, with stops at Lynchburg and New Britain in 1992. Sele began his third pro season with Trip...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2372342 ... Excerpt: Robert Henryson (alternative spelling: Henrysoun) was a poet who flourished in Scotland in the period c. 14601500. Counted among the Scots makars, he lived in the royal burgh of Dunfermline and is a distinctive voice in the Northern Renaissance at a time when the culture was on a cusp between medieval and renaissance sensibilities. Little is known of his life, but evidence suggests that he was a teacher who had training in law and the humanities, that he had a connection with Dunfermline Abbey and that he may also have been associated for a period with Glasgow University. His poetry was composed in Middle Scots at a time when this had become a state language. It is one of the most important bodies of work in the canon of early Scottish literature. His writing consists mainly of narrative works highly inventive in their development of story-telling techniques. He generally achieved a canny balance of humour and high seriousness which is often multi-layered in its effects. This is especially so in his Morall Fabillis, in which he expresses a consistent but complex world view that seems standard, on the surface, vis a vis the major ruling power of the church, while containing critical and questioning elements. This range is further extended in his Testament of Cresseid with its more tragic vision. Overall, his themes and tone convey an attractive impression of humanity and compassionate intellect. He was a subtle rhetorician and remains to this day one of the finest in the Scots language. Although his writing usually incorporated a typically medieval didactic purpose, it also has much in common wit...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=334662 ... Read more
