Left it on the plane
This book was given to me by a colleague when she was cleaning out her office.She described it as fun, beach reading.I thought I'd give it a try...and took it on a trip with me.I settled into to my seat as the plane was boarding and had high hopes..... Well, the writing was so bad, the characters so shallow and the humor (I'm a sucker for witty novels) so negligible that I left it in the pocket of the seat in front of me.I remember thinking that it would feel criminal to actually throw a book away, and hoped that maybe a flight attendant would find it and enjoy it.

Or maybe not.A few people in their reviews have mentioned Sex and the City...The difference between the two is that SATC is actually funny and you end up caring about the characters...even when they do crass or slutty things.You still root for them; you still like them.There was nothing to like about Maneater.

If you want a fun beach read, try Patricia Marx's novel, Him Her Him Again The End of Him.Very funny, smart writing that sweeps you up into the plot.That's what I would call a good beach read.

Shallow Character, But Amusing Story
It took me about 100 pages to finally get into this book.I was given this book by a friend, otherwise I never would have picked it up given the premise of the novel.Clarissa Alpert has slept with almost every man in L.A., and now she is ready to look for a husband.Though I don't consider it a bad thing that she has slept with so many men, I thought that it was unrealistic and almost pathetic that she had LITERALLY started planning the wedding before she even went on a date with the guy.

There were many times that I was irked by her and her friend's shallow remarks.However, towards the middle of the novel I realized the reason she was this shallow and unaccomplished in life at the age of 30 was that her mother and father made her that way, discouraging her from joining any sports in the worry that she would have to big of thighs, or not to do hard math even though she was good at it because it was unwomanly.

Overall, I realized Clarissa was not as horrible a person as she seemed.She was actually a very loyal woman, and a great friend.I recommend this book to anyone looking for a shallow read and a strong character.Though Clarissa gets herself in quite a few scrapes, she gets out of them skillfully.As I said, it takes awhile to get into the book, since there definitely is a couple major twists, which surprised me, because I thought I had guessed the ending on page 40, but boy was I wrong.

Hilarious Start, Good Plot Twist, Strange Ending
When I picked up this book from author Gigi Levangie Grazer, I had already read her made-into-a-TV-miniseries book, The Starter Wife. Having loved that book (it's definitely on my favorites list), I was expecting Maneater to be a treat. Which it was, to a point.

After reading about 10 or so chapters, I thought this was perhaps the funniest book I had read in awhile. There are so many wacky moments that take place and you find yourself thinking that the main character, Clarissa, is manipulative, vain, and a little (or a lot) crazy. Her goal is to marry a rich man and when she sets her sight on a Hollywood-newcomer, Aaron Mason, she stops at nothing to con him into marrying her. But, the story isn't about Clarissa's antics concerning the wedding. The reader comes to find out that the story is actually about the lengths Clarissa will go to get what she wants and what happens when the tables turn on her. There is a great plot twist that I definitely didn't see coming. Also, the best part of this book is Clarissa's group of friends that call themselves the Star Chamber. I've heard this group referred to as the girls from Sex & the City, but the Star Chamber is definitely more delusional and outrageous. The best quotes in the book come from their meetings.

Had the book continued on this comical path, I would've given it 5 stars. However, near the end of the book, something happens that turns the mood from laughable to somber (even though the author tries to keep the fun alive by providing small comedic elements). This event causes us to look at Clarissa as a different kind of person and to me, it ruined the fun. The abrupt change in her character was too close to the end of the book for a recovery. I think the author tried to make it seem gradual, but it didn't come off that way.

All in all, Maneater is worth a read because it's daring and entertaining and you'll get some good laughs. However, I recommend reading The Starter Wife if you're looking for a main character that you aren't expected to have a revelation about so close to the end of the story.

I just received this book a couple of weeks ago. I have not yet read it, and therefore cannot give it a review. However, it was highly recommended to me by two co-workers. Other than that, I did receive my product in a timely manner, which is very important to me. This was my first time to do business with Amazon, and it was a pleasant experience.
