Product Description
This text represents a new entry level course in mathematics for students in programs such as mathematics, the sciences and engineering, which require additional courses in mathematics. With enough material for a two semester course, the text is written at approximately the level of introductory calculus. Principles and Practice of Mathematics was developed over a four year period, under the direction of COMAP, with NSF support. It is an alternative point of entry into the undergraduate mathematics curriculum, one which presents for students a wide spectrum of the contemporary world of mathematics. By emphasizing the breadth and variety of modern mathematical inquiry and applications, the text provides a view of the subject that is not experienced by students in the traditional calculus course. The author team and advisors were selected for their experience with undergraduate education. Among our authors are several who have written successful textbooks. The entire project has evolved under the editorial supervision of veteran COMAP author, Walter Meyer, Adolph University. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of money
I had to get this book for my college course and I can say it really is quite bad. There doesn't seem to be enough useful examples and it really is quite hard to learn much from this book. There are also a lot of errors in this book. Many questions are worded poorly too. ... Read more

Product Description
This story is about a young African American boy named AJ McCater, who is struggling with the horrible stories his grandmother has been telling him about "The White Man". She consistently tells him that the "white man" is the cause of all struggles in life, because white people had stolen people's land for years. Since AJ's father has left him and his mother, the young boy and his mother have to move in with Grandma Eddie Mae, who lives in a bad neighborhood. The boy becomes distraught seeing that he has no last name, no house, no father, and is in a bad neighborhood with his grandmother and mother. The plot thickens when his mother gets pregnant and moves her white boyfriend in the home. The boyfriend wants to marry the mother, and this brings joy to the African American boy, who now sees he will have a last name, a house, a father, and a new baby sister. Unfortunately, his new dad is shot in a drive-by, and needs a heart transplant. Will he get it? If so, from whom? The donor will shock you. You'll have to read the book to find out! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars God forbid...
Seriously, just look at the cover!

I know, don't judge a book by its cover but in this case you might as well!

The story was absolute garbage and hosts unbearable writing. The themes are shallow and meaningless, almost unethical.I would never let my children read anything like this! There are so many wonderful pieces of literature for children, this is a pointless add on.A grab for some extra cash, I guess.

I plan to throwing it in the garbage, I don't want this on my shelf with other "real" pieces of literature.

1-0 out of 5 stars What on earth?
Honestly? What in the world is this? I have to say, this is one of the worst pieces of literature I've ever had the misfortune to encounter - and I've read a lot of cheap fan fiction... There is literally no redeeming quality here.

...And good God, that cover art...

Do NOT buy this book if you know what's good for you. Masochistically bad literature is available for free all over the Internet; no reason to spend $10+shipping for it.

1-0 out of 5 stars terrible

Product Description

This fourth volume in the series exploring religions and the environment investigates the role of the multifaceted Hindu tradition in the development of greater ecological awareness in India.

The twenty-two contributors ask how traditional concepts of nature in the classical texts might inspire or impede an eco-friendly attitude among modern Hindus, and they describe some grassroots approaches to environmental protection. They look to Gandhian principles of minimal consumption, self-reliance, simplicity, and sustainability. And they explore forests and sacred groves in text and tradition and review the political and religious controversies surrounding India's sacred river systems.

1-0 out of 5 stars An Offensive Multicultural Picture Book
I thought the book was very offensive. The book is about an African-American boy and white boy that meet on the street and exchange brief words. The African American boy says "Yo" while the white boy says "Yes". The message that I took away from this book was that African American children speak "street Ebonics" while the white children speak "standard proper English". I thought the book continued to perpetuate bias and stereotypes about African American children. As an educator, I am consciously aware of the books that I read and share with my students and the implied messages that the books share. It is important for all children to see characters in books that can serve as a mirror or window on how they see themselves or others. I would not recommend. There are better multicultural books on the market. Try Erza Jack Keats books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review from Books That Heal Kids
This. Book. Rocks. It's one of those read alouds where the whole class goes silent. I know - your loving it even more now! But the silence is because they are secretly hoping for something special to happen...an awesome thing called friendship. I've had classes clap after I finish reading. Yep, they are totally clapping for friendship. Pretty sweet. Yo! Yes? has been a wonderful teaching tool. It's helped kids on both sides of the friendship spectrum from shy to outgoing. There's all kinds of goodness you can do with this book. Sincere questions I ask students: How can you reach out to someone you'd like to be friends with? How can you spot someone who is lonely and reach out to them with your friendship? Have you ever had a friendship similar to Yo! Yes?What do you notice is different about the boys? You get what I'm saying here - there are many discussion starters and role play scenarios to be used as teachable moments. Allow your child or students to read this out loud to you. They really get into the fluency, tone, and body language.

3-0 out of 5 stars Yo! Yes?
Raschka's use of rhythmic one-syllable words to tell a tale of two boys meeting, engaging in getting to know each other, and becoming friends, is complemented by his quirky illustrations.Yo! Yes? teaches children the value of listening to the other person and watching that person's body language to fully understand their intentions. Moreover, the simplistic and repetitive wording is perfect for that "first reader".

This is a terrific book for its targeted audience of pre-school to Grade 2 children, but it may be too simplistic for an advanced second grade reader. However, Raschka's story of newfound friendship camaraderie is definitely one to share with your children.

5-0 out of 5 stars 1st isn't the LAST TIME!!
The book got to me fast. Way before the scheduled time. I was in perfect condition and securely sent. I was very happy witht the book and would order again from the same person and AMAZON.com.

4-0 out of 5 stars Yo! Yes? YES for 3-5 year olds.
At first, I didnt really think that this book would work very well in my preschool class of 3-5 years olds but I figured out a way that makes the children really enjoy it. If you have more than one copy, let the children have their own copy to turn the pages and read it along with you. The story teaches the children about the importance of friendship and communication. While it is a pretty simple and short book, if you have the children read along....it works out quite well. ... Read more

Excerpt: Justin McCarthy "Sam" Barry (December 17, 1892 September 23, 1950) was an American collegiate athletic coach who achieved significant accomplishments in three major sports. He remains one of only three coaches to lead teams to both the Final Four and the College World Series. Barry was born in Aberdeen, South Dakota. After starring in basketball, baseball and football while a student at high school in Madison, Wisconsin, he continued his success at Lawrence College, later completing his degree at the University of WisconsinMadison. He returned to Madison High School to begin his coaching career, and then proceeded to become athletic director at Knox College in Illinois from 1918 to 1922, where he also served as coach of football, basketball, baseball and track. In 1922 he was named basketball coach at the University of Iowa, and also became a football assistant under then Hawkeyes coach Howard Jones an association which would continue for 15 years at two universities. Barry also coached the Iowa baseball team in 1923-24. Barry led the Hawkeye basketball team to Big 10 co-championships in 1923 and 1926 the first two conference titles in team history and helped Jones guide the football squad to an undefeated 7-0 season in 1922, winning a share of the Big 10 title the last for Hawkeyes football until 1956. 3-0 out of 5 stars Read it for the vibrant history, not the story
A workmanlike later novel in the Blackford Oakes series. The detail about Vietnam and the politics of the time (much of it is set in 1964) is striking and vintage Buckley. However, the fate of Oakes' colleague and titular character is obvious from early in the book. Read it for how it brings history to life in a fictional setting and to catch up on the latest in the life of the series hero -- both are worthwhile, and entertaining, reasons. But not as much for the storyline; there isn't much mystery here.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fictional Footnote to the Vietnam War
Buckley gives us an interesting snapshot of one aspect of the Vietnam War -- namely, a high-tech attempt to interdict movement down the fabled Ho Chi Minh Trail.Although fictional, it deals with a lot of fact and brings back searing memories of those days in the early 1960s before the U.S. became so fully immersed in the Vietnam War.Though an interesting period piece, the book fails to excite the reader. In typical Buckley style, "Tucker's Last Stand" moves deliberately but lacks compelling moments. You won't stay awake reading this book. The best part of the book is the glimpse it gives of some real, historic people (LBJ, Goldwater, MacNamara). A fictional footnote it is. A thriller it aint.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb storytelling!
Bill Buckley took a break from Blackford Oakes to give us this exciting Vietnam-era war novel, and I'm glad he did.Tucker is an excellent protagonist in the vein of Clancy's "Mr. Clark".

1-0 out of 5 stars Toilet this book
I found that this novel had more viewpoints than an actual story. And just what was the story? It seemed that ten pages could have been enough. Stupid, stupid, and more stupid! ... Read more
