Excerpt: Frank Woodruff Buckles (born February 1, 1901) is, at age 109, the last living American veteran of World War I and the oldest verified military veteran in the world. He currently lives at Gap View Farm, near Charles Town, West Virginia and is the Honorary Chairman of the World War I Memorial Foundation. During World War II, Buckles was taken prisoner by the Japanese as a civilian. Buckles was born in Bethany, Missouri. He enlisted in the U.S. Army at the beginning of America's involvement in World War I in April 1917. Only 16 years old at the time, Buckles was asked by his recruiter to show a birth certificate. Later Buckles said of that event, "I was just 16 and didnt look a day older. I confess to you that I lied to more than one recruiter. I gave them my solemn word that I was 18, but Id left my birth certificate back home in the family Bible. Theyd take one look at me and laugh and tell me to go home before my mother noticed I was gone. Somehow I got the idea that telling an even bigger whopper was the way to go. So I told the next recruiter that I was 21 and darned if he didnt sign me up on the spot! I enlisted in the Army on 14 August 1917." Before being accepted into the United States Army, he was turned down by the Marine Corps due to his slight weight. In 1917, Buckles was sent to Europe on the RMS Carpathia, which had rescued Titanic survivors five years earlier. During the war Buckles served in England and France, driving ambulances and motorcycles for the Army's 1st Fort Riley Casualty Detachment. After the Armistice in 1918, Buckles escorted prisoners of war bac...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=9693928 ... Read more

Product Description
Hang on, it's a hell of a ride!

From the band that lived by the motto "Anything worth doing was worth overdoing" -- Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, Tom Hamilton, Brad Whitford, and Joey Kramer -- comes a quarter century of rock godhood: the life, the music, the truth, the hell, the lost years, and the raunchy, unsafe sex.

And, of course, the drugs.

But after crashing in a suffocating cloud of cocaine, crystal meth, and heroin, Aerosmith rose up from the ashes to become clean and sober -- and reclaim their rightful title as World Champion Rockers. Learn how they did it in a book that is pure Aerosmith unbound: where they came from, what they are now, and what they will always be -- a great American band.

Amazon.com Review
From Aerosmith's heyday in the late 1970s, which they spent "gacked to the nines" (as lead singer Steven Tyler puts it), to the Aerosmith of today--clean, sober, and adored by millions--the band has a long, hard history. Walk This Way chronicles the whole story: drugs, booze, and all.

Prefaced with the now familiar rock-star "intervention," when Steven Tyler's loved ones cornered him in his manager's office in 1986, the autobiography traces Aerosmith's twisted road, from their New Hampshire roots to their success in Boston to the worldwide fame that they long craved and currently enjoy. Tyler kicks off this rock & roll exposé, briefly recounting the history of his ancestors in Italy and sharing incidents from his own Northeast childhood. The book is written in interview style, with all five band members talking candidly about the good times--and the bad. We also hear from girlfriends, wives, friends, and various hangers-on.

The story of Aerosmith and their constant ups, downs, and detours never fails to grab you and force you to read another page--if only to see what train wreck awaits around the next corner. Walk This Way is a must-read for devoted fans of Aerosmith as well as anybody who wants to live the full-on '70s rock-star life--without having to go through rehab. --Paul DeBruler ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Aerosmith Fan or Not...
Whether you're an Aerosmith fan or not, you'll simply love this book about the legendary band. Going back to their roots, their failures, and all the way through the US Rock Festival, you'll get an entertaining look in to the intimacies of Aerosmith. Their drug use is no secret, nor is their partying. But stories about how Ted Nugent showed up late to the US Rock Festival because he was hunting Lions in who knows where (he brought back a toe nail from a recent kill), was highly entertaining.

Check it out!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another fantastic read!
Aerosmith became my favorite rock & roll band when I was a teenager.I love Steven Tyler & their first four albums will always be my favorite.I'm so happy he is still singing & kicking & has been fortunate to have lived to be a senior citizen! That prospect didn't seem likely 20 years ago.I read this book in the late 90's & loved it.It was so informative & written superbly. It gave me so much insight to this amazing band & what I consider one of the best bands there will ever be.Second only to Chuck Negron of 3 Dog Night, I read this book & could not imagine Stephen Tyler living one day without heroin or some type of drug to mess him up.I repeat what I said about Negron. For all heroin addicts there is hope. This man & Negron gives that hope.If Stephen Tyler can quit heroin, any addict can. This book is his amazing survival journey to how he became clean after so many many years & to the man he is today. This book is a must read for all Aerosmith fans & all addicts.Tyler provides hope that with a strong spirit & determination, it can be done. There can be life without heroin or any drug. This unique & phenomenal band is still going strong in 2010!They are one of the greatest rock & roll bands in history & have been around about the longest after the Stones, another phenomenal & unique band.I saw Aerosmith in 1984 & after one song, Tyler fell off the stage in a drunken/drug stupor, lights came on & show was over!I was so disappointed!2 years later, he was clean & I saw them in 1986 & they put on a magnificent show!I have since seen them in concert 2 more times & there are no words to describe the absolute pleasure watching them perform & hearing those dynamite songs belted out as only Tyler can do.I'm in such awe of this band & will forever be their greatest fan! You rock guys!

5-0 out of 5 stars the truth is here!
this band was not scared nor ashamed to tell the whole truth. this book and so far "Noone Here Gets Out Here Alive" are so far the best books when it comes to bands and their successes and downfalls. only this band is still at the top. read this and you wont be disappointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty dern good
This book always sticks in my mind because I happened to have it in my work bag to read on 9/11, so when I got stuck down in DC waiting for the public transportation to open up again, I just sat on a patch of lawn, cracked open "Walk This Way" and spent some quality time with Steven, Joe and the rest of the boys.Later that day I read it in the McDonald's which was the only place we could find open to eat in, and later that week I read it on a couple of planes and sitting up late in a hotel room where I was visiting my band friends on tour. Thanks to Aerosmith and the author for giving me a fine easy and not too sleazy rock read to focus on that week, it really helped.

Getting on to the merits of the book, I enjoyed the format of having the story told by each of the band members in turn (sort of like "The Dirt" which is probably the gold standard for hard rock/ metal band bios).I prefer to get the stories in the band members' own words and their voices come across nicely. The tales of Steve and Joe's teenage band performances go on for a little too long in my opinion, but once you get over that hump, the band's early years move along at a pretty fast clip, and it's especially fun to read about the origins of the hit songs like "Dream On" and "Sweet Emotion". Before long, the tales of excess begin to crowd out the tales of musicianship, and I was shocked to read about the depths to which Steve and Joe both sunk before they got help.

My favorite story was the one about how Aerosmith almost leased the plane that later crashed and killed several members of Lynyrd Skynyrd.Fortunately, Aerosmith had a very responsible pilot who warned that the plane didn't seem safe, so they didn't lease it. Skynyrd leased the plane instead, with tragic results.

I would have liked to see a few more pictures, particularly of the band's wives and ladies. It seems like Elyssa Jerret gets the lion's share of the attention in the book (mostly negative) just as she reportedly demanded it for the years she was with the band.I'd like to hear more of that story, but it seems out of place in a book about the band, since she was not a band member as much as she apparently tried to be front and center.
