Editorial Review

Book Description
From their eponymous 1978 debut through their colossal 1984 album (they've sold over 75 million albums worldwide), Van Halen rewrote all the rules. Nobody rocked—or partied—harder. Photographer Neil Zlozower first met the band in 1978, worked with them again on Van Halen II, and soon became their friend, hanging out in L.A. and hitting the road on tour with them. Van Halen collects more than 250 backstage, candid, and full rock-out photos of the all-powerful, spandexed, high-kicking, guitar blazing, stadium-shaking, original Van Halen lineup. Accompanying Zlozower's amazing photos are an introduction about his wild ride with VH, a foreword by David Lee Roth, and testimony from the rock pantheon paying homage to the band, including members of Led Zeppelin, Guns N' Roses, Def Leppard, Judas Priest, KISS, Motley Crüe, and more. Turn it up! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC...GIMMIE MORE
WOW, WHAT A WONDERFUL WAY TO GO BACK IN TIME W/ THE VAN HALEN BOYS...ESPECIALLY DAVE, CUZ W/O HIM THERE IS NO VAN HALEN!!!!! IF YOU LOVE VAN HALEN, YOU NUST MUST MUST BUY THIS BOOK!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST for the true VH fan
I remember hearing the first track of VH 1 when it was released,
bringing with it chills up the spine and jaw dropped.
This book brings you in a time warp to witness rock history, and
realize - in case you didn't - that Van Halen dropped a bomb on
the music scene. Not only a revolutionary guitar god, but songs
and live performances that rose light years beyond what was coming out
of the U.S.A. at the time. The kind we won't see again, either.

The photos, by a master of R&R photography, look like they were taken
yesterday. Crisp, clear and a great mix of group shots and live. The
backstage pics of Eddie preparing his axe arsenal, for example, are priceless; Alex behind one of his monster drum kits.

And yes, it appropriately culminates with 1984 - got a problem with that?

5-0 out of 5 stars Where have all the good times gone?
Felt like I was back in high school, as I flipped through this book about the Rock God's -- Van Halen. Finally a Van Halen book worth looking at. Beautiful book about the Greatest Rock Band and Guitarist of all time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tons of pictures....
This is a big, good quality hardcover book.Mostly full of pictures, hence the title. The pictures are excellent quality, and I couldn't stop from looking through them. There are also many quotes and stories from other musicians and coworkers.Very interesting.I bought this book as a gift for a huge Eddie fan, and I'm sure he'll display it proudly on his coffee table...I know I would.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great pics that show you some amazing VH history
It's an amazing visual history of the band we all grew up listening to. I'm very happy that I bought it. ... Read more

Book Description
The first definitive biography of the ultimate American rock band

How did a pair of little Dutch boys trained in classical music grow up to become the nucleus of the most popular heavy metal band of all time? What's the secret behind Eddie Van Halen's incredible fast and furious guitar solos? What makes David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar so wacky? And, are all those stories about groupies, booze bashes, and contract riders true? The naked truth is laid bare in Everybody Wants Some--the real-life story of a rock 'n' roll fantasy come true. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Somebody get me a doctor! ;-)
This is one of those books that is for info. only -- this is no major literature effort, but who expected that?If you loved VH in the 70s or 80s, it's really entertaining and gets into the technical guitar stuff you wouldn't know about otherwise. If you want Britney type coverage, I don't think they had it then...but Adnan wouldn't have lived through it!Go see these guys - they rock!DLR can't do the split jumps off the drums any more. But he actually sings some....and eddie is still eddie.Holy NOT the Monsters of Rock tour!

3-0 out of 5 stars A well-researched & entertaining read; Nothing earth-shattering
All the information in this book was culled from decades of interviews in guitar magazines, fanzines, press clippings, and web-based press releases, some of which I remembered word-for-word. As others have said, there is nothing in this book a hard-core fan wouldn't already know. Still, it is a decent summary presented in an entertaining fashion. I had lost interest in Van Halen after Sammy left the first time, so it was fun to catch up.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Mediocre Book About a Great Subject
Ian Christe's latest book about the Van Halen phenomenon is a work of tortured prose. This is more a collection of anecdotes and vignettes than it is a biography.Almost all of the quotes from musicians used in this book are taken from previously published articles by other writersand are not the results from interviews that Christe has had with them.It is par for the course for Christe whose career as a rock music writer is akin to that of a journeyman baseball pitcher:he can have his moments, but ultimately his work may not be worth your money.

Instead of merely attempting to tell us Van Halen's life story, Christe attempts to pass off ridiculously overwritten, bombastic babble as having insight into his subject.

However much of a Van Halen fan that you may be, this is one book that you need to take your time in deciding whether or not to buy it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Van Halen Story Worth Hearing
I read this book after having seen the band perform in Phoenix, AZ in November 2007.I've been a fan since the early years (mid 80's), but saw them live for the 1st time this year.Although I love nearly everything the band has produced, my loyalties are to the D.L.R. version of the band, and I was extatic at seeing the 'one and only' D.L.R. perform live with the band after so many years.
This book really goes places most fans have never been, and gives those die-hards a look at their heros they've never seen before (or ever wanted to).Ian Christie is not a top-notch writer, but the story he tells makes up for his writing limitations. However, I did feel like most of what he said I could have learned by reading everything else that had ever been written about the band.Nearly all of his book came from other, previously published works, by other authors.I am happy to let someone else do the reasearch and wrap it up in a nice, tight, little package for me to enjoy.
I would recommend this book to anyone who only knows Van Halen casually, but would like a more intimate introduction. They are a legend which will continue to grow regardless of whether or not they ever release another album.
The books ends only suggesting a reunion with D.L.R.I was lucky enough to experience the real thing this past Fall.I hope a new album is in the works.Everybody Wants More, and So Do I!

3-0 out of 5 stars Copy and paste
Well, this is another one of those "copy and paste" pseudo-biographies about rock bands, where the author puts together only second-hand information already published in other sources and does not interview any of the badn member or even their close personnel.

Anyway, if you're not the kind of person that wants to read everything about the band you like (as myself)and, since there is no official Van Halen biography around, this is a satisfactory place to star reading about the band's history. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Every single VH song !!!
This amazing book features the complete guitar TAB for every single Van Halen album (1186 pages). This thing is huge. I don't have the skills to play most songs yet but maybe at some point i'll be able to. This is a must-have for every true Van Halen fan. The only reason i didn't give 5 stars is the size, let me explain. Imagine yourself flippping through a phone book, that's what it feels like, the pages are a little bit smaller (8x11)than your regular guitar tab book (9x12).
It should have been split in two books. Also the song You're No Good is not included due to copyright restrictions. It is a great buy, you will not be dissapointed.

3-0 out of 5 stars There are MISTAKES in the tab
Overall a good source, however certain songs have several mistakes. The tapping section of "Eruption" is tabbed on the "G" string! WRONG! Its played in different positions and on the "B" string!! The last part of the solo in "On Fire" is also incorrectly tabbed on the "G" string, Again, should be the "B" string. Many other subtle mistakes are found throughout. So if you are already versed in the Van Halen style, you will KNOW where the mistakes are, if you are not, most assuredly confusion and frustration will ensue. CAVEAT EMPTOR!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Nice Book!!!
You've got to have some experience with tabs before otherwise you'll
find it hard because it's a very detailed book. The techniques described
are not the easiest.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hey Kids, get your Van Halen guitar tabs!!!
This book is perfect for the beginner to turn into a more advanced guitar player. The tabs are easy to read, the stuff isn't that difficult to play, and the songs are legendary and still heard on the radio today. I say go for it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Makes a good doorstop
Dull dull and dull. A guaranteed good time for anal retentive fans with no life. For the rest of us it's about as exciting as watching paint dry. No pictures, no band interviews, no opinions, no new info, nothing. Just a billion pages of information, about 10% of which is useful. The other 90% is just there to take up space. Save your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jam Packed With Tons Of Info...
As you might know if you have read my other Van Halen product reviews, I am a Van Halen fanatic...which means I know a lot about the band, but with this book, the band members themselves could learn something! 425 pages containing things such as past concert dates, numerous pages of information on each song that they wrote, a 25-page timeline, I could keep going on all day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Find all the good times!
Find anything you want to know about this amazing band! Dates, song, events you get the idea it's all in there!

5-0 out of 5 stars Redefines the word ENCYCLOPEDIA!
A true Encyclopedia. This book should be the definition of it. Nothings missing in this compact book that is available at a bargain I think. Van Halen fans should not live without this excellent book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't believe the hype!
Pros: Well, it's got alot of trivia tidbits...Cons: Numerous errors and a big disappointment if you're looking for good info regarding bootlegs. The Bottom Line: Unless you're simply looking for some shallow trivia about Van Halen, it would probably be best that you avoid paying your hard earned money to get this book,Recommended: No--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I bought this because I thought it was gonna give me lots of juicy details about the plethora of VH bootlegs that are available on the WWW, but I was sadly mistaken.

I wanted a list of bootleg cdr's with track listings, track times, sound quality & performance ratings, but these are not in this book.

Some errors:---Attributes "Man On The Silver Mountain" to David Bowie(!) instead of Ronnie James Dio & Rainbow.---Spells Jimi Hendrix "Jimmy".---Attributes "Nobody's Fault But Mine" to Edgar Winter instead of Led Zeppelin.---On page 173 Lynyrd Skynyrd is spelled "Lynard Skynard".---Says that "no known recording exists" for VH's cover of Trower's "The Fool And Me" when one does indeed exist on "Golden West Ballroom 1976".

Perhaps these errors seem trivial, but damn, you'd think that the author of a book about a mainstream act like Van Halen would know better...

I was deeply disappointed with this book and wish that I had instead spent my money on something by Bukowski or Crumb. ... Read more

Book Description
After more than two years of writing and a lifetime of research as a VH fan, author Abel Sanchez has meticulously crafted a most excellent comprehensive guide to the amazing history, music, impact and influence of the Mighty Van Halen. VH 101 clocks in at 398 pages and comes in a handy 6x9 format. From the birth of the VH brothers to their days paying dues on the Sunset Strip, through their three distinct eras and all the way up to the recent 2004 Tour this book covers it all in painstaking detail. Written in a fun, raw, laid back style which reflects the band's classic approach to rock. If you're a fan of Van Halen and guitar this book is a must own. If you're someone who's looking to learn all about VH there's no better place to start than right here. If it's dirt you seek please save your money and look elsewhere. The author has far too much respect for all the band members and their loved ones to stoop that low.

What truly sets 101 apart is the closing chapter, "Tribute," which contains an extraordinary celebration of Edward Van Halen's life and career by over a hundred of the world's greatest musicians who personally stepped forward to pay their respects to this legend and recent cancer survivor. Without further ado here's a tiny sampling of the many luminaries who were kind enough to step up and share their thoughts, memories and experiences with EVH during this once-in-a-lifetime project: The late great "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, Allan Holdsworth, Ginger Baker, Jennifer Batten, Jason Becker, Adrian Belew, John 5, Bela Fleck, Marty Friedman, Paul Gilbert, Trey Gunn, James Hetfield, Steve Howe, B.B. King, Kerry King, Dr. Know, Wayne Kramer, Robby Krieger, Albert Lee, Tony Levin, Steve Lukather, Frank Marino, John McLaughlin, Ted Nugent, Jas Obrecht, Henry Rollins, Jim Root, Joe Satriani, Michael Schenker, Alex Skolknick, Mark Tremonti, Steve Vai, Zakk Wylde and Neil "The Zloz" Zlozower.

Fans will also find plenty of commentary peppered throughout the rest of the book from such greats as: Jimmy Page, Paul McCartney, Pat Metheny, Jeff Beck, David Gilmour, Slash, Ritchie Blackmore, Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Billy Gibbons, Gene Simmons, Kirk Hammett, Dave Mustaine, Joe Perry, Rory Gallagher, Tom Morello, George Lynch, Mick Mars, Yngwie J. 5-0 out of 5 stars Best VH reference book ever
Sorry haters but this is hands down the best VH reference book ever writtten. Even the notoriously stiff Rock HOF approved. Why wouldn't they seeing as how we're guided through an accurate fun unique journey surgically detailing the entire life, career and catalog of this legendary American rock institution. Considering the incredible depth, width and breadth of this group's legacy that's no small feat. Somehow Sanchez makes it look easy. Learn everything from how the group formed and Eddie's influences to how he built his guitars and achieved that famous brown sound. Want to know what other musical minds think of Eddie? Check out the tribute inside 101. It contains page after page of top flight players openly discussing EVH. Zakk Wylde, Joe Satriani, Allan Holdsworth, James Hetfield and BB King are just a handful of the monster names who for the first time anywhere gave us their honest uncensored opinion of Van Halen.

You almost have to feel sorry for these few trolls who come on here spewing garbage. Bet most of them didnt even read it. Actually the majority of the negative reviews seem to come from the same source. The ultimate sign of bonafide lameness. True fans know better so it's all good. Anyone interested in a more classic approach to the rock bio pick up the new Everybody Wants Some by Ian Christe. It's good too.

Van Halen 2007!

4-0 out of 5 stars Flawed but fun
It is very, very obvious that this book was written by a smitten fan-boy. It showers Van Halen with the most ridiculously reverent, absurdly awestruck praise you will ever find. The author repeatedly and unrelentingly pounds the reader with hyperbolic descriptions of Ed's guitar prowess. Reading this, you'd think that Eddie Van Halen was the Messiah and that being a guitar god is the Only Thing That Matters on earth.

The author either is a mall-rat, slacker, fan-boy ... or tries very hard to sound like one. He uses "dude" and "baby" at least as frequently as he uses "Eddie" or "Dave". Maybe he imagines the average Van Halen fan to be a stereotypical Beavis-&-Butthead metal-head, and just wants to sound like "one of the guys". But it sounds ridiculous.

Yet despite all of this, this book is actually quite charming. Van Halen fans will not mind the lavish praise of one of the undoubted greatest rock bands of all time. In fact, fans will appreciate the passionate, detailed (but how accurate?) descriptions of the rise and rise of Van Halen - from rebellious school beginnings, through the glam club scene, to triumph on a global scale. It certainly brought me nostaligically back to the 80s, when Van Halen provided the soundtrack to much of my youth. For a trip down memory lane like this, you'll find an enthusiastic fan-boy is not necessarily bad company.

You can tell that this is a work of love on the part of the author. He painstakingly invited a Who's Who of hard rock to submit their own personal tributes to EVH - a monumental feat in itself. The author also goes to great lengths in researching production details, sales figures and various bits of trivia about each of the albums.

Yes, a lot of the text is the author's own subjective opinions on topics such as EVH's place in the history of rock etc. But if you buy this book, you are probably a fan already - and reading the views of a fellow (if rather over-zealous) fan on your mutual favorite band is suprisingly enjoyable. With subjective comments, you will find parts where you disagree. Sammy fans will note with some discomfort the author's unabashed preference for Dave. The author also makes little effort to hide his adoration of Metallica, and how he feels they later overshadowed Van Halen. But these become points for fans to contemplate or discuss, and really don't detract from the enjoyment of reading this book.

So overall, this book does have its flaws. It is often amateurish in its writing, over-opininated in many areas, and sickeningly over-the-top in its hero-worhip of the band (and EVH in particular). But despite all this (maybe even because of it), it becomes a weirdly entertaining book to read for any fan of Van Halen. Yes, it's not a cheap book to buy - but at least I think I got a good dose of fun, laughs and nostalgia from a fellow fan-boy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Light on sleaze, heavy on music
One of only a handful of books christened "Recommended Reading" by the Rock Hall of Fame on Van Halen's Inductee Profile at the Official RARHOF website. That glowing endorsement led to my grabbing a copy and I haven't put it down since. By ignoring the sleaze and focusing all their energy on the group, the music and of course captain Eddie the writer managed to chronicle and document everything you want and need to know about Van Halen in the form of this easy breezy book. A true labor of love that really speaks to you. The crown jewel was the living breathing tribute comprised of a V.I.P. list of musicians who turned up to celebrate Van Halen beating cancer. Each artist was afforded more than ample room to wax philosophical on Eddie's life, music, guitar skills, influence and career achievements.
Get it or your collection won't be complete.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst book I've ever read.
The back of the book says "No BS, no hype - just the facts".Ha!What a load of BS!This entire book is nothing more than a bunch of excerpts taken from various magazines over the years combined with the author's opinions and speculation.Terrible, just terrible!

Not only that, but the author constantly refers to the reader as dude and baby.Every time a sentence would end in baby, I'd want to punch the wall!

Also, every time the word "because" should be used, the author uses the word "cuz".Makes me want to vomit!

And, if I ever in my entire life read again about how EVH can "play his d*ck off", it will be too soon.I don't have to be constantly told throughout the book that EVH can play the guitar, or that the other "cats" in VH can play their instruments.Obviously, anyone purchasing this book already knows that fact.

I was hoping for something more in line with Motley Crue's "The Dirt", but this isn't even close. The band doesn't appear to have been involved at all with the writing of this book. It's nothing but regurgitated magazine articles filled with a bunch of fluff by the author.

Stay away from this book! You probably won't learn anything you don't already know. And, if you're like me, you will walk away extremely irritated at the juvenile manner in which this book is written.Hopefully the band will do a proper biography sometime in the future and give us something better than this poor excuse for a book.

5-0 out of 5 stars What's not to like???
Invested in what has to be the most intense look at my favorite band and picker yet. Its unreal the monster amount of information you get to go along with an Eddie tribute made up of a laundry list of the greatest pickers from yesterday and today talking about THE greatest picker.
Throw in a dazzling Zlozower front cover, a million quotes from all kinds of A-List musicians and chilling Brian May opening salvo...
what the hell's not to like?

Beats me as to what some of these self professed critics lurking around here are thinking because its hard to imagine any tried and true fan not loving this to death. These critics are probably the same bitter souls who ceremoniously, dubiously and unfairly slammed the Van Halen Early Years dvd of a few years ago on this site for not digging into the band's personal lives and things like that. Their agenda is sad.

Van Halen 101 impresses in a huge way. Where most show their dedication by creating a website or fanzine, and in all fairness just about anyone can do that, Sanchez crafted a book displaying a dedication, knowledge, humor and level headedness rarely found in the superfan.

After receiving the new guitar world with Van Halen on the cover and watching the attached dvd containing a new Eddie interview I went back and reread this book and realized it read just like Eddie talks. During the interview he kept saying 'cat' and 'insane'... or stuff like 'thats the sh&t'. This is the exact same way 101 was written. Lots of dude, cat, insane and so on. They definitely got inside of and channeled their subject.
Now that Van Halen has been voted into the Rock Hall I'm loving and appreciating this even more. There is some concern regarding the selection of Eddie's son as their new bass player but we have got to have faith the guy knows what he's doing. Keeping my fingers crossed for a summer reunion tour where I can hopefully get this signed because that front cover is begging for an autograph. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK!
This book made all the VH albums like new to me again because of Eddie's more indepth descriptions of how he made those great sounds.
The Mozart of our time!

4-0 out of 5 stars EVH: The Interviews
This book is filled with 12 different interviews with one of Rock's legendary guitar heroes: Eddie Van Halen. All of the interviews are culled from past Guitar World issues, and to my knowledge, are complete. They arearranged by publication dates, which range from 1981 to 1997.

Most arefilled with the typical questions, and more than a few touch on the DavidLee Roth's departure. One interview is given by Billy Corrigan (SmashingPumpkins)! Never would have saw that one coming!

I have read most ofthese interviews from the magazine, but it was great to have them in onebook. After reading several of them, I realized that either I hadn't readthe orginal interviews completely, or I just plain forgot about some facts! It was a joy to go back and re-read them.

It's nice to see a timeline ofEddie's progress from a childhood pianist to a full fledged guitar god. It's also nice to see a bound book with these gems, as the ink from a bookdoes not smear from constant reading like a magazine does!

While therewere pictures peppered here and there, they were black and white. I wouldlike to see more pictures (color), and the originals sidebars thataccompanied the magazine editions (ie. equipment, setups, etc...)

If thepublishers had included that last bit of info, I would definately give thisbook a five. Who knows, Eddie is still kicking, maybe they will releaseanother edition! ... Read more
