1-0 out of 5 stars I would not recommend this book
I think this book is horrible. As written in a prior review, it's missing large segments - riffs, solos etc.Its really strange. On several songs, after the intro the guitar part gets very basic - its clearly not what Stevie's playing, and I agree with the other review, that it looks like it's listing the vocal melody. Most songs also seem to be missing the solo's.I don't know how this one slipped through the cracks at HL.My only guess is on the cover it says "Easy Guitar".Which in this case seems to mean leave out everything but the basics. That's the only positive thing I could say - if you're looking for a book that gives you "a touch of SRV" maybe this would be good, but even then I think I'd go to a tab site first.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as accurate prior reviews say
Recently purchased this book and found much to my amazement that the music in the book is not really close to the recordings. Hal Leonard usually does quality publications, but this one doesn't seem to measure up. Admittedly, I haven't looked over the ENTIRE book, but from sightreading some of his old classics, I'm very suspicious about the accuracy of the rest of the music.

Problems I see
1. Some songs (i.e. Texas Flood, Life Without You) are included without any intro (and I've never heard them played minus the intro before). Some of Stevie's covers may be original music from other artists, but even some of the music with his name on it seems to be simplified or shortened in this manner.

2. During vocal sections on some songs, the guitar part "dissapears" and the written music echoes the vocals or a keyboard(usually the lead instrument). This is quite contrary to what SRV actually played on CD tracks, and frusterating for someone interested in learning the guitar rhythm on these songs.
Pride and Joy, Texas Flood, and Crossfire are examples of this.

3. Songs are missing solos, or have a shortened version of a solo. Texas Flood immediately comes to mind. The sheet music echoes the vocals for two pages, then ends. I understand bluesmen improvise solos, but for a book that advertises solos (something else I hoped to get a little exposure to) it sure goes easy on some songs. Fillers between the vocals are also simplified to one or two chords rather than the fast runs that Stevie uses for most of his music.

I don't know what happened. Maybe I've made some mistake and I missed some fine print. I thought I was getting some music that would help me gain some exposure to Stevie's technique, but it instead appears to be extremely "dumbed down." In the case of all the songs I've looked at in this book, I would deem online tablature (if it exists) to be superior.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best of Stevie Ray Vaughan
This a collection of songs, previously published by Hal Leonard, that spans thecareer of the blues master. It is not a "how to" book, so it might be intimidating to guitar players who are just starting out.Intermediate and advanced players will enjoy the accurate, easy to readtablature, and the price is about the average cost of one guitar lesson.Excellent!

1-0 out of 5 stars For guitar players only
Being a dedicated SRV fan, I was thrilled to find a book I didn't have about SRV but when I recieved this book, it really isn't a book but a "how to play SRV songs" instead which is great if you play guitarbut I don't.None of the information available on this book indicated thatthis is a how to play instead of a book about SRV so be on notice. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars In the Beginning
As a huge fan of SRV and the reason I took up guitar I was searching for the tabs to one of my favorite songs from him. Despite internet searches there was no "Guitar Hurricane" tabs that I could find. This book has them so I am happy.
The track list is: In The Open, Slide Thing, They Call Me Guitar Hurricane, All Your Love(I Miss Loving), Tin Pan Alley, Love Struck Baby, Tell Me, Shake For Me, and Live Another Day. (The back inside cover is a notation legend)
These songs are from SRV's "In The Beginning" album.
A good job in tabbing all of the songs. Worth the money. ... Read more

Excerpt: Stephen Ray Vaughan (October 3, 1954 - August 27, 1990) was a Grammy Award-winning American guitarist, singer, and songwriter. Eighteen albums of Vaughan's work have been released. Vaughan was inspired to play guitar by his older brother, Jimmie Vaughan, and was influenced by such players as Jimi Hendrix and Buddy Guy. After a few years as a sideman in and around Austin, Vaughan formed the band Double Trouble, with whom he made four successful studio albums and established a reputation as one of the foremost blues guitarists in the world. He was noted for using the Fender Stratocaster, with several guitars being made in tribute to Vaughan, including a Signature Stratocaster and a replica of his famous Strat named "Lenny". In 1986, after years of substance abuse from alcohol and cocaine, he spent a month in drug rehabilitation, and remained clean and sober for the final four years of his life, until his death in 1990 in a helicopter crash. On February 22, 2000, Vaughan was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in Washington, D.C., being one of only 79 performers to be inducted. He also won several W. C. Handy Awards, during his lifetime and posthumously, including Entertainer of the Year and Instrumentalist of the Year in 1984. In 2003, he was ranked #7 in Rolling Stones list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. Classic Rock Magazine ranked him #3 in their list of the 100 Wildest Guitar Heroes in 2007. Vaughan was born on October 3, 1954, in Dallas, Texas, the son of 26-year-old Martha Jean Vaughan (15 June 1928 - 13 June 2009), and Jimmie Lee Vaughan (6 September ...http://booksllc.net/?id=166911 ... Excerpt: Born Under a Bad Sign is a blues album by Albert King, recorded between 1966 and 1967, and released in 1967 by Stax Records. This was the first album Albert King recorded on Stax, and the title song became a blues standard. King played a Gibson Flying V through a solid-state Acoustic amplifier; his tone on the second song, "Crosscut Saw," was hailed in 2004 by Guitar Player as one of the "50 Greatest Tones of All Time." Eric Clapton closely imitated the solo of "Crosscut Saw" for Cream's song "Strange Brew" and the band covered the title song for their 1968 album Wheels of Fire. British band Free covered "The Hunter" on their 1968 debut album Tons Of Sobs, and it was a concert staple of theirs, as seen on their 1971 album Free Live!. In addition, Led Zeppelin incorporated elements of "The Hunter" into "How Many More Times" from their self-titled 1969 debut album. The vocal melody from "As The Years Go Passing By" inspired Duane Allman's composition of the main riff from "Layla" from Derek and the Dominos' Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. Glenn Danzig covered "The Hunter" on Danzig. In 2003, the album was ranked number 499 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. Excerpt: "The Sky Is Crying" is a slow-tempo twelve-bar blues song that has become a blues standard. First recorded by Elmore James, "The Sky Is Crying" reached #15 in the Billboard R&B chart in 1960. Accompanying James (vocal and slide guitar) are his longtime backing band, the Broomdusters: J. T. Brown (saxophone), Johnny Jones (piano), Odie Payne (drums), plus Homesick James (bass). Elmore James was credited as the sole song writer on his Fire Records single. However, over the years, several names have appeared alongside his on various reissues and covers of the song. In 1991, Elmore James' "The Sky Is Crying" was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in the "Classics of Blues Recordings - Single or Album Tracks" category. 2-0 out of 5 stars As usual...sizzle but no steak
The problem with this (and most DVD and CD supported guitar instruction programs) is that the instruction is incomplete and misleading. The instructor shows a few chords and a basic lick. However, what is shown is so basic that it could be picked up for free on u-tube.Now, the DVD does provide nice versions of the songs, but the problem is the versions played are not the ones taught. The instructor adds lots of embellishment and flourishes, but gives no information on these additions. While no DVD can teach the subtleties of performance, at least the TAB for the performance could be included.Even without direct and explicit instruction, the addition of COMPLETE TABS would lead to an excellent product. As is, the product looks good, but has little substance.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not bad!
As a learning blues guitarist/fan I have a few DVD "How to's". This one isn't bad but the instructor shakes a lot and seems very nervous.
I was interested in this as Stevie Ray songs are pretty difficult to play. The instructor shows you the rhythm only - no soloing!
Wasn't exactly what I was hoping for but, for the intermediate to beginner, this is not a bad DVD.

2-0 out of 5 stars NOT THE FULL SONG!
SongXpress "Austin Blues Vol 1":
One big disappointment with this series (SongXpress) is you are NOT taught the whole song! The solos are missing altogether! The main song parts are demonstrated very well, but they should specify somewhere in the listing that they do not teach you the whole song with solos!

I had also purchased one of the SongXpress Singles "Crossroads" and the two main solos are not shown at all! When you think of "Crossroads"(Cream, Clapton) the majority of the song is soloing, and yet no solo is demonstated!
Big Disappointment!

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent intro to SRV
This tape will get you sounding like Stevie Ray Vaughn in no time. I was amazed at the ease of learning. Good clear instruction. I have several other song express tapes and have found all of them good for intermediate to beginner guitarist.
This is my favorite Mainly because I'm a SRV fan.
I've tried personal instructors and have found that these tapes give you a much better deal, you can go over any section you need again and again. Buy it and have fun. ... Read more
