Product Description

A remarkable and delightful memoir of a life spent in the uppermost circles of acting, politics, and the world

Robert Vaughn was born an actor. His family worked in the theater for generations, and he knew from the very start that he would join them.  In his fifty-year career, Vaughn has made his mark in roles on stage, in film, and on television the world over. In A Fortunate Life, he describes some of the one-of-a-kind experiences he’s enjoyed in his celebrated career.             A Fortunate Life reveals the details of his early years in Hollywood, when he found himself appearing as often in the gossip magazines as on screen, and he recounts insider stories about such legendary figures as Judy Garland, Bette Davis, Charlton Heston, Oliver Reed, Jason Robards, Richard Harris, Yul Brynner, Elizabeth Taylor, and many more. Vaughn’s work in The Young Philadelphians, The Magnificent Seven, Superman III, and many other films won kudos from critics and peers alike. Worldwide recognition came when he starred in the smash hit series The Man from U.N.C.L.E., and he vividly describes the extraordinary experience of becoming, quite suddenly, one of the world’s brightest stars.
Vaughn warmly recalls his romances with stars like Natalie Wood and his adventures with friends like Steve McQueen and James Coburn, but equally important was his involvement in the politics of the 1960s. The first actor to publicly speak out against the war in Vietnam, he served as national chairman of Dissenting Democrats, the largest antiwar organization in the U.S. He gave hundreds of speeches denouncing the war, debated William F. Buckley on national TV, and helped persuade his friend Robert F. Kennedy to run for president in 1968---only to see the race end in tragedy.
With a wealth of moving, wonderfully entertaining and often jaw-dropping stories from the worlds of acting and politics, A Fortunate Life is a must-read for fans of Robert Vaughn and anyone who wants a glimpse behind the scenes of classic Hollywood.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Fortunate Read .
Thoroughly good read from Mr Vaughn. Not just a lot of fascinating actors anecdotes, always a plus with me, as an ex agent, but his interest in politics, and particularly the conspiracytheory about Robert Kennedys' death was an eye opener for me .Mr Vaughn details his early acting career in the theatre, a must for any serious thespian who wants to maintain longevity in a difficult profession, with great affection, and for his mother who inspired him. The possessor of an excellent voice, another vital component for a serious actor, you can here his meliflous tone on every page. Most enjoyable . Garry Stewart.Melbourne Australia

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Read on a Road Well Traveled
So many people have ghost writers do this kind of thing for them but not Robert Vaughn. He is a Liberal Democrat and I am a life long Conservative Republican but I found this to be one wonderful read. When I was ten THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. was on the air and I was a fan of it and Mr. Vaughn. This is a wonderful telling of a life well spent.Though he and I may have different views on things, I have nothing but respect for Robert Vaughn and this is one incredible telling of a talented actor making his way through life.I read it in a single setting and it was both entertaining, and touching.Though Robert Vaughn and I are very different in political views -- though I do agree the war in Vietnam was a horrible waste of life ( including a cousin of mine who died there) and should never have never have been waged -- Bob, in the battlefield of ideas you were right and we were wrong.I will always be a big fan of his and will always have a deep and abiding respect for him.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Fortunate Read!!!
I love Robert Vaughn and all that is Man From U.N.C.L.E. RV has given the reader a introspective look into life beyond the one series that changed American Television. It is strung together vinettes that entertain and enought U.N.C.l.E to keep the die-hard pleased.

I expected more than one chapter specifically devoted this part of his acting career; however, he weeves the experience throughout the book. A Fortunate LifeA Fortunate LifeHighly recommended and a solid part of a growing library.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Reading!
Good book - very interesting insight into the movie business and the beginning life of Robert Vaughn.
Worth reading.

3-0 out of 5 stars some bloopers
Okay this is not the recipe for making nitroglycerin, but a little more proofreading would have good.

On the top of the page 223, Vaughn seems to think that JFK was assassinated on November 22, 1962.Okay maybe the proofreader was young and is not interested in history. But in the photo section, the last photo shows the cast of S.O.B.Okay lets say again the proofreader is young and is not interested in movie history. There are 15 names in the caption and only 14 faces.Larry Storch is not in the picture. This just involves counting. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars "Only Victims" Makes you stop and Think.
After years of having heard about the blacklisting era, I was surprised that so much more was involved. This book should be required reading for all high school and college students. The depth of the book was overwhelming. I had always thought that period of history was restricted to the 1950's, but it began long before that. Robert Vaughn writes with such eloquence on the subject that you hold onto every written word. I read the entire book in one day. It is fascinating. There was so much I never knew about this dark time in history. The innocent who's lives were destroyed and the guilty who slipped thru the cracks. BRAVO!

5-0 out of 5 stars Preserving the First Amendment
Robert Vaughn's "Only Victims" is a necessary book with a necessary goal -- stressing the importance of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and citing the dangers of what happens when its cherished tradition is jeopardized. In the name of combatting Communism liberties were jettisoned while the art of stool pigeon information dissemination reached a feverish pitch during Hollywood's blacklist period beginning shortly after World War Two with the advent of the Cold War.

The title of the book, which was the famous actor and author's doctoral dissertation at the University of Southern California, was taken from a statement by Dalton Trumbo that the blacklist period produced "only victims."Trumbo was one of the Hollywood Ten.The Danbury, Connecticut prison facility to which he was sent for failing to name names of alleged "subversives" he encountered had another notable prisoner at the same time Trumbo was incarcerated, former Congressman Parnell Thomas, chairman of the House Un-American Activities Committee, before which the screenwriter appeared.

In addition to ruining careers of many film industry people, the widespread crackdown on writers threatened an industry brain drain which led to some crafty countermeasures.Pierre Boule, who did not understand a word of English, received a Best Screenplay Oscar for adapting his novel, "Bridge on the River Kwai," to the screen.Carl Foreman and Michael Wilson, both blacklistees, actually wrote the screenplay.Trumbo wrote the screenplay for "The Brave One" as Robert Rich.It was a 1956 release and the Oscar won by "Rich" sat on an Academy of Arts and Sciences shelf until Trumbo claimed it almost twenty years later in 1975.

Robert Vaughn performed with gusto and sophistication as television's successful "Mister Uncle" series in the sixties. He performs with equal gusto and sophistication as an author, using his exhaustive research to write a thoughtful work about an important topic and period of American history.

4-0 out of 5 stars Written when Vaughn was going for his PhD!
Robert Francis Vaughn wrote a fine account of Hollywood blacklisting actors and actresses who were considered to be Communists back in the Fifties. He wrote it with a good head on his shoulders, right after his tenure with a fad TV series, his staunch anti-Vietnam views and support of RFK before the ex-Attorney General was killed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Compelling
A strong, detailed account of the Hollywood Blacklist.I first read this book for a Jurisprudence class in '72 and recently re-read it and still could not put it down.Vaughn makes a thorough and insightful case for whywe should never forget. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Poet and teacher
I feel privileged to call Bonnie Roberts one of my greatest teachers! In To Hide in the Light, She takes down the "mask" that many hide behind allowing the reader to see her soul. Her poetry embraces the simple and important things in life--all human emotion, memory, movement, and the idea that love does not need words. As expressed through her writing, Bonnie's honesty and love for living encourages readers to live unafraid to be themselves. Poetry runs through her veins like rivers. ... Read more

This volume examines the practical and theoretical justification for freedom of information laws, particularly the United States Federal Freedom of Information Act, which gives any person access to documents and records of federal agencies. In this regard, the volume also considers objections to these laws and explores topics raised by the adoption of freedom of information principles outside the United States. ... Read more
