Read more

Excerpt: Witold Lutosawski (Polish pronunciation: ; January 25, 1913 February 7, 1994) was one of the major European composers of the 20th century, and one of the pre-eminent Polish musicians during his last three decades. During his lifetime, Lutosawski earned many international awards and prizes, including the Order of the White Eagle, Poland's highest honour. During his youth, Lutosawski studied piano and composition in Warsaw. His early works were influenced by Polish folk music. His style demonstrates a wide range of rich atmospheric textures. He began to develop his own characteristic composition techniques in the late 1950s. His music from this period onwards incorporates his own methods of building harmonies from small groups of musical intervals. It also uses aleatoric processes, in which the rhythmic coordination of parts is subject to an element of chance. His compositions (of which he was a notable conductor) include four symphonies, a Concerto for Orchestra, and several instrumental concertos and orchestral song cycles. Lutosawski's life is documented in both Stucky (1981) and Rae (1999). Lutosawski's parents were both born into the Po...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=409576 ... Read more

Read more

Excerpt: Andrzej Wajda (Polish pronunciation: ; born 6 March 1926) is a Polish film director. Recipient of an honorary Oscar, he is possibly the most prominent member of the unofficial "Polish Film School" (active circa 1955 to 1963). He is known especially for a trilogy of war films: A Generation (1954), Kana (1956) and Ashes and Diamonds (1958). He is currently listed as the 97th greatest director of all-time by film website They Shoot Pictures Don't They, with four of his movies nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film: The Promised Land (1975), The Maids of Wilko (1979), Man of Iron (1981), and Katy (2007). Andrzej Wajda (center) in 1970Andrzej Wajda is the son of a Polish cavalry officer murdered by the Soviets in 1940 in what came to be known as the Katyn massacre. After the war, he studied to be a painter at Kraków's Academy of Fine Arts before entering the ód Film School. After his apprenticeship to director Aleksander Ford, Wajda was given the opportunity to direct his own film. With A Generation (1955), the first-time director poured out his disillusionment over jingoism, using as his alter ego a young, James Dean-style antihero played by Zbigniew Cybulski, 20-year-old Roman Polanski also featured. At the same time Andrzej Wajda began his work as a director in theatre, including some fantastic spectacles, like Michael V. Gazzo's Hatful of Rain (1959), Hamlet (1960), Two On a Seesaw (1963) by William Gibson. Wajda made two more increasingly accomplished films, which developed further the anti-war theme of A Generation: Kana (1956) in which st...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=44392 ... Read more

Excerpt: Krzysztof Kielowski ( listen), (27 June 1941 13 March 1996) was an influential Polish film director and screenwriter, known internationally for his film cycles The Decalogue and Three Colors. Kielowski was born in Warsaw and grew up in several small towns, moving wherever his engineer father, a tuberculosis patient, could find treatment. At sixteen, he briefly attended a firefighters' training school, but dropped out after three months. Without any career goals, he then entered the College for Theatre Technicians in Warsaw in 1957 because it was run by a relative. He decided to become a theatre director, but at the time there was no specific training program for directors, so he chose to study film as an intermediate step. He was raised Roman Catholic and has retained what he calls a "personal and private" relationship with God. Leaving college and working as a theatrical tailor, Kielowski applied to the ód Film School, the famed Polish film school which also has Roman Polaski and Andrzej Wajda among its alumni. He was rejected twice. To avoid compulsory military service during this time, he briefly became an art student, and also went on a drastic diet in an attempt to make himself medically unfit for service. After several months of successfully avoiding the draft, he was accepted to the ód Film School on his third attempt. He attended from 1964 to 1968, during a period in which ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=155269 ... Read more

Excerpt: Lech Aleksander Kaczyski OIH (Polish pronunciation: ; 18 June 1949 10 April 2010) was the President of Poland from 2005 to 2010, a politician of the party Prawo i Sprawiedliwo (Law and Justice, PiS). Kaczyski served as Mayor of Warsaw from 2002 until 22 December 2005, the day before his presidential inauguration. He was the identical twin brother of the former Prime Minister of Poland and current Chairman of the Law and Justice party, Jarosaw Kaczyski. On 10 April 2010, he died in the crash of a Polish Air Force Tu-154 landing at Smolensk-North airport in Russia. Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Włodzimierz Cimoszewicz (Polish pronunciation: , born September 13, 1950 in Warsaw, Poland) is a Polish politician. He was a member of the left-wing Democratic Left Alliance, the Prime Minister of Poland from 1996 to Autumn 1997, the Foreign Minister of Poland in the governments of Leszek Miller (2001-2004) and Marek Belka (2004-2005), the speaker of the Sejm (lower chamber of the Polish parliament) in January - October 2005 and the leftist candidate in the Polish presidential election of 1990 (received 9% of the votes) and of 2005 (withdrew before the elections and promised to abandon politics). In 1990, Lech Wałęsa and Stan Tymiński went on to the second round. Cimoszewicz did not run in the years 1995 and 2000 giving way to his close colleague Aleksander Kwaśniewski who twice became president. His election committee was chaired by the wife of President Kwaśniewski, Jolanta Kwaśniewska. On July 9, 2005, Cimoszewicz caused a major political uproar by refusing to testify in front of the Orlen commission. He accused 7 of its 8 members of be...http://booksllc.net/?l=de ... Read more
