Product Description
This collection of documents, including many previously unpublished, details the role of the Army engineers in the American Revolution. Lacking trained military engineers, the Americans relied heavily on foreign officers, mostly from France, for sorely needed technical assistance. Native Americans joined the foreign engineer officers to plan and carry out offensive and defensive operations, direct the erection of fortifications, map vital terrain, and lay out encampments. During the war Congress created the Corps of Engineers with three companies of engineer troops as well as a separate geographer's department to assist the engineers with mapping. Both General George Washington and Major General Louis Leb que Duportail, his third and longest serving Chief Engineer, recognized the disadvantages of relying on foreign powers to fill the Army's crucial need for engineers. America, they contended, must train its own engineers for the future. Accordingly, at the war's end, they suggested maintaining a peacetime engineering establishment and creating a military academy. However, Congress rejected the proposals, and the Corps of Engineers and its companies of sappers and miners mustered out of service. Eleven years passed before Congress authorized a new establishment, the Corps of Artillerists and Engineers. ... Read more

Product Description
The development of judicial review has been one of law's great growth industries for more than a quarter of a century. It is the public bodies whose activities are routinely subjected to judicial scrutiny which have felt the effects of judicial review most keenly. There has also been a trend in recent years towards judicial review of private bodies whose activities include a public aspect. This has meant a growing awareness,in industry and commerce, of the potential for review of regulatory decisions. In light of the growing importance of this branch of public law, the LSE and Brick Court Chambers decided jointly to host a series of seminars out of which this book has developed. In this important new book expert academics and practitioners (some of them lawyers working in regulated industries) analyse the origins and modern growth of judicial review in the commercial context and attempt to analyse the way in which the law may develop in the future. ... Product Description
This personal memoir by a medieval scholar reveals an important discourse with two Ismaili leaders who spearheaded the Fatimid revolution in North Africa in 909-910. By reporting the thoughts and activities of Abu ‘Abdallah al-Shi’i and his brother Abu’l-Abbas over a period of seven months, Ibn al-Haytham in his Kitab al-Munazarat (The Book of Discussions ) provides us with an unparalleled insider’s view to the foundations of the Fatimid state. As such, it is a unique document in the literature of early Islamic revolutionary movements as much as it represents one of the most valuable sources for the history of the medieval Muslim world.

This books offers us an untainted view of the establishment of the Fatimiyya Caliphate. It provides the readers with a critical, covert view of the aspects of life in Ifriqiya at that time. It's unfortunate the editors could not expound on certain situations that took place pre and post advent of the dynasty such as the factual reasons behind the execution of the two Da'i brothers.

The translated manuscript provides a solid glimpse of Ibn al-Haytham's personal view and feelings of the ongoings during this period in time. ... Read more

Product Description
The Ismailis, among whom are the followers of the Aga Khan, rose to prominence during the fourth Islamic/tenth Christian century. They developed a remarkably successful intellectual programme to sustain and support their political activities, promoting demands of Islamic doctrine together with the then newly imported sciences from abroad. The high watermark of this intellectual movement is best illustrated in the writings of the Ismaili theoretician Abu Ya´qub al-Sijistani. Using both published and manuscript writings of al-Sijistani that have hitherto been largely hidden, forgotten or ignored, Dr Paul Walker reveals the scholar's major contribution to the development of philosophical Shiism. He analyses his role in the Ismaili mission (da'wa) of that time and critically assesses the major themes in his combination of philosophy and religious doctrine. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Instead, read Walker's "Prompt & Utter Destruction"
Instead of wasting your time reading this mess, I highly recommend reading J. Samuel Walker's cogent, insightful, and objective "Prompt & Utter Destruction."

5-0 out of 5 stars Truman's delimia on the atomic bomb
Anyone young or old who has any doubts about: should we have dropped the atomic bomb, should read this book. It will be clear why we did and prove that it was the right thing to do.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for a casual read
Walker writes a wonderful book that easy to read and gives a strong argument for why we dropped the atomic bomb. He covers most of the relevant issues and gives a good picture of why certain avenues for resolving the war just would not have been feasible.

My only major problem is the lack of references for the points he makes. While I realise this is not an academic book, it would still be nice to have references to back up what is presented. There are a few, but they are just that, few and far between.

Still, if you are looking for an easy to read, concise explanation of the dropping of the bomb, I would most certainly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting
Although the book suffers from poor editing, and somewhat unorganized writing, Walker still delivers a cogent argument for using the most powerful and terrifying development of 20th Century technology.

1-0 out of 5 stars Superficial, badly written, and by moments simply disgusting
This book is a collection of war stories that, for the best part, have absolutely nothing to do with the title of the book. Never the author analyses really the so-called "Truman's dilemma". His book (that has clearly not been proof-read, since it's full of typos and repetitions) develops a theory which is to me close to revisionism. According to Paul D.Walker, the dilemma did not exist : Truman did a good thing when he ordered to drop the 2 atomic bombs to obtain Japan's surrender, since he spared not only the lives of many young GI's, but also (paradoxally) the lives of (cruel and barbaric) japanese civilians, who all would have died in vain if the war had continued for too long. The two-thirds of the book are there to prove that the casualty rate of a Japan invasion would have been so high among the US army troops that it was better to nuke two cities without prior warning and shock the Japanese High Commandment (the fact that this Bigh Commandment refused to surrender after the bombings and had to be forced by the Emperor to do so is one of the numerous paradoxes of Walker's theory). The author does not hesitate to say that, all in all, the 150,000 nuked japanese civilians are nothing compared to the 350,000 chinese people killed during the infamous "Rape of Nankin" by the japanese army. Never does Walker balance really the different options that Truman had (well, he did not only have invasion or the bomb, you know, he also has blockade, intensive traditional bombings, etc.). Never does he reflect about the fact that the Allies wanted "total and absolute surrender" from Japan, and nothing else, when all the intelligence gathered about the Japanese people proved that this could not be an option, because Japanese hate to lose their face - which is a basics to anyone who studied just a little bit the japanese culture - and that this stubborness from the Allies led to a "cul de sac" in terms of negociation to end the war...
To summarize, this book is not about the dilemma. If you want to be reassured that these bombings were the right thing to do, go ahead and read the book. If you have doubts, spare your money, because you will not learn anything new, and will not be exposed to a real historian work. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
In this essay collection, the contributors contend that academic drama represents an important, but heretofore understudied, site of cultural production in early modern England. Focusing on plays that were written and performed in academic environments such as Oxford University, Cambridge University, grammar schools, and the Inns of Court, the scholars investigate how those plays strive to give dramatic coherence to issues of religion, politics, gender, pedagogy, education, and economics. Of particular significance are the shifting political and religious contentions that so frequently shaped both the cultural questions addressed by the plays, and the sorts of dramatic stories that were most conducive to the exploration of such questions. This volume argues that the writing and performance of academic drama constitute important moments in the history of education and the theater because, in these plays, narrative is consciously put to work as both a representation of, and an exercise in, knowledge formation. The plays discussed speak to numerous segments of early modern culture, including the relationship between the academy and the state, the tensions between humanism and religious reform, the successes and failures of the humanist program, the social profits and economic liabilities of formal education, and the increasing involvement of universities in the commercial market, among other issues. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A youth sports story with some realistic social problems
Tony and his friends play for the Halbertson's Flowers little league team and they are good. They hit well and play very good defense, so they have won the title for the first half of the season. However, when the favorite bat of superstitious Medgar Washington, their best hitter, is stolen he goes into a terrific slump. The slump spreads suspicion and the slump among the teammates and the suspicion extends to players on the other teams. However, when additional equipment from other teams disappears the plot deepens. The players form the sluggers club in order to investigate the mystery.
Their suspicions fall on Crazy Pete, a homeless and alcoholic Vietnam veteran who lives under the bleachers of the stadium. This is an interesting character to include in a youth sports book, although it is an all too unfortunate reality. When the people on their initial list of suspects all prove to be innocent, their suspicions turn to the Black Scorpions, a gang of older Cambodian youths. Their investigations take them across the river to the poorer side of town where they see firsthand how the poor immigrants live.
Finally, they discover the truth; one of their own players was stealing equipment to outfit a group of young Cambodians so that they could also play baseball. This motivates the sluggers to conduct a used equipment drive and has the added benefit of breaking them out of their slump.
This is a sports mystery well set in the modern world. The teams contain players of many ethnic groups and Emily Kravitz is a good stick at the plate. Including the homeless Vietnam veteran and the poor immigrants who want to become Americans add a realistic aspect that could be true in any small city in America.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Sluggers Club book review
"Hey battah battah battah" chanted the infield. This is a Ganda League baseball game and the Halberston's Flowers were down 3-1 andWash in the batters box. Wash is the best player the Halberston's Flowers had and he was missing his bat, the bat he can only hit with. Then, after two strikes, he swings again, "Steee-rike three! Yerrr out!" Wash stuck out and let his team, the best team in the Granda League, lose their very first game ever. Then B.J., Tony, and Wash made the Sluggers Club. Was it one of Wash's teammates, Emily Kratvitz who took the bat? Or was it Wash's arch rival, Ed Obermeyer that is the star player on the rival team? Can it be Crazy Pete, a homeless guy, or Mr. Farnsworth, the team manager? Worst of all, can it be the the most dangerous gang ever, the Black Scorpions? Can the Sluggers Club ever find out who took Wash's bat before the season is over? Will Wash be too worried about finding his bat that his team would keep losing every single game? If you ever want to find the answers to these questions, you got to read this book. Two more things you should know before reading this book is that 1,when you stop reading, always stop at a chapter. And 2, the best time to read this book is at night.

2-0 out of 5 stars The Sluggers Club
The Sluggers Club is an okay book, but I think it is pretty boring. It has an exciting beginning and ending though. Most baseball finds would enjoy it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Angels amongst us
This book is full of Andy Lakey's spiritual three dimensional art, featuring mostly his angels. Besides thefull color prints, included are personal insights into his journey that led him to creating his art (he was a car salesman before) and various testimonials about the impact of his art. Skeptics might be turned off and discount him as just another new age spiritualist. However, the fact of the matter is, he has had a positive impact on many people and that is what this book and his art is about. His now famous 2000 angel series for the millenium was the impetus for his effect on countless people. The book is very easy to read and often repetitive, hence the minus one star, but the message is clearand his art shines and brightens the hearts and souls of many people. The oversized print is a background to the dazzling visual imagery Lackey employs with his angels. Of particular interest are the various stories of other people who have been touched by his art, most notably the blind, including Ray Charles. His art is collected by many people, including such luminaries as former Presidents Carter and Ford, Ed Asner, Gloria Estefan and Pope John Paul II, amongst others. This is primarily an art book but the related included stories are an additional bonus. This would make a great gift book, especially but not limited to someone who likes art or needs uplifting guidance. The angels and three dimensional art that come in the book can be enjoyed many times over. The stories will astound you.
