Product Description
A famous battalion on the Western Front

The appalling losses to the British regular army during the first period of the Great War prompted the creation of the New Army-an enormous influx of citizen soldiers driven by feelings of patriotism determined to 'do their bit' for the cause. Such a massive increase in the size of the army required a huge expansion in the number of battalions to accommodate them. These came under a myriad of identities-public schools, chums, footballers etc-and included adding battalions to well known regiments of the regular army. The Royal Fusiliers gained many such battalions and the subject of this book, the 23rd, was one of the most notable. As its name suggests the battalion attracted a distinctive type-particularly those with a spirit of sportsmanship and adventure. The war service of this battalion was as exemplary as any that served on the Western Front and the places it fought-listed in detail within these pages-are a catalogue of the famous actions of the conflict, though perhaps its greatest day of reckoning came at Delville Wood in 1916 during the Somme offensive. Available in soft cover and hard cover with dust jacket for collectors. ... Read more

Excerpt: Janet Waldo (born February 4, 1924, though several sources state 1918, in Yakima, Washington, though several sources state Grandview) is an American actress and voice artist with a career encompassing radio, television, animation and live-action films. She is best known in animation for voicing Judy Jetson, Penelope Pitstop, and Josie McCoy in Josie and the Pussycats. She was equally famed for radio's Meet Corliss Archer, a title role with which she was so identified that she was drawn into the comic book adaptation. Waldo's mother was a singer trained at the Boston Conservatory of Music, and her father was a descendent of Ralph Waldo Emerson. Her sister, Elisabeth Waldo, is a leading authority on pre-Columbian music and an award-winning composer-violinist who appeared in the film Song of Mexico (1945). Growing up, Janet Waldo had a love of acting and the theatre from an early age and performed in plays at her church. She attended the University of Washington, where her performance in a student theatrical garnered her an award and brought her to the attention of UW alumnus Bing Crosby. A Paramount Pictures talent scout, who was with Crosby at the time, signed Waldo for a screen test, which lead to a contract with the studio. Waldo appeared in several dozen films in uncredited bit parts and small roles, although she was the leading lady in three Westerns, two of them starring Tim Holt. Her big break came in radio with a part on Cecil B. DeMille's Lux Radio Theater. In her radio career, she lent her voice to many programs, including Edward G. Robinson's Big Town, The Eddie Bracken Show, Favorite Story, Four-Star Playhouse,...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1470908 ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A different perspective
This book was recommended to me ten years ago by a piano player in a bar-restaurant, and I finally bought it. It's not the typical piano lesson book. The author tries to explain music composition and means of playing to make interesting music, not just a recitation. The author assumes the reader can already play the piano or will practice enough to put the author's suggestions into action. Great tips if the reader wants to put forth the effort to follow them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easier than I thought
This book came recommended by a music educator and I'm so pleased with it.I love the the humor it contains along with the easy explanation of the music system. If I can grasp this, anybody can! It's making me more a complete musician.

4-0 out of 5 stars Too clever by half
Overall a good work on learning to make and enjoy homemade music. The style of prose is dated and too flippant for my tastes.Buy it anyway and go for content rather than entertainment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just buy it and try it.
It came before I started any lessons at all and it was able to allow me to try some of the techniques in the early pages.
However, it should serve those with previous experience and fingering abilities better.
My beginner's piano lessons have interrupted me for now, so the review will wait to be edited.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I think this is a great book, especially if you have some experience sight-reading music and taking lessons where you never learned any music theory (whichis my story). Other reviewers who claim that the book limits itself to a certain type of song or style are wrong, as this is a very basic overview of how music works, that can be applied to any music. It's not a "melody in one hand and chords in the other" approach either, as one reviewer complained, as it introduces all of the basic techniques that go into arranging a song - any song. One reviewer who stated that this book is for reference only was also wrong, as it's quite possible to play for years, as the title states, without understanding what you're playing. But this book explains music so that it's not just a "sea of notes" anymore, and so that you can arrange your own songs or play from fake books without relying only on reading sheet music note-for-note. Highly recommended. ... Read more
