Product Description
In 1976, Robert Adams shot "Fort Collins, Colorado," a nighttime picture of a lone tree in a Colorado parking lot, the crescent moon hanging in the sky above. More than 30 years earlier, Ansel Adams had captured "Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico," showing a magnificent vista of desert scrub and clustered buildings, snow-capped mountains in the distance, the full moon majestically presiding in the expansive sky overhead. These two pictures could be neither more different nor more similar; nor could the younger Adams have made his photograph without knowledge of his greatly admired predecessor's. If Ansel Adams created singular images in search of a platonic ideal of nature, Robert Adams explored repetition and conformity; both were responding, in their own personal and aesthetic way, to the landscape of the American West. The first book to juxtapose bodies of work by these two 20th-century master photographers, Reinventing the West reveals how their photographs reflect changing attitudes toward the western landscape and the natural world.

1-0 out of 5 stars From the library!?
This book is marked all over it from the Cuyahoga County Library.I checked their online sight and see it is a proud item in their inventory. This made me ill to think someone took this from the library and sold it to me through Amazon.Just another example of where our citizenry has stooped. No wonder our country suffers even though it could be the greatest place on earth.I am sad to say I am an American at times like this.I have contacted the library and hopefully the schmuck responsible will be prosecuted to the further extent of the law.I hope they throw the book at him; pun intended.

The book itself is great! From the usual group of idiots!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Mad takes on Superduperman, Battyman and their friends
Superman and Batman appear on the cover of "Mad About Super Heroes," along with Alfred E. Newman, because most of the parodies found within have to do with those two comic book icons. For the Man of Steel the fun goes all the way back to Harvey Kurtzman's classic "Superduperman!" from "Mad" #4 (back when it was still a comic book) to "Smellville" from Mad #415.However, "Superduperman!", the parody of the comic book, is not to be confused with "Superduperman" the take off on the first movie, which were followed by "Spuerduperman II" and "Stuporman ZZZ," which is not to be confused with the television series "Lotus & Cluck: The New Misadventures of Stuporman."One of the things I found interesting reading through these stories was how hard it must be after several decades to come up with a new name for Superman's secret identity, from Clark Bent to Cluck Camp.

The Caped Crusader receives similar treatment, from the classic Wally Wood drawn "Bat Boy and Rubin!" to "Bats-Man" the television show to the blockbuster "Battyman" movie and its "Buttman Returns" and "Buttman and Rubbin'" sequels. This collection comes courtesy of "the usual gang of super-idiots," and includes classic artwork by Mort Drucker, Sergio Aragones, Al Jafee, Angelo Torres, and Don Martin (these guys must have worked for nothing because this book is, by its own admission, priced "Cheap!).There are two sections in the volume that offer up the stories in full-color, but, of course, these are restricted to offerings from the comic book days of "Mad" (e.g., "Plastic Sam" and "Woman Wonder") and back covers (e.g, "Famous Artists' Paintings of Comic Book Characters").

There are other full-length movie parodies as well of the "X-Men" and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" movies, although I liked the "Upcoming Movies Based on Comic Books," which simply offered up quickies on "Human Torch Song Triology," "Hulk Fiction" and "JLA Confidential."Another favorite is the "Real-Life Superhoeres at Comic Book Conventions," which uses the names of familiar heroes from "The Amazing Spider-Man" to "Wonder Woman" to describe the fans who read such literature. So there is a nice mix of formats to these comic looks at the comic books as the world's greatest super heroes are "mercilessly mocked and ridiculed by the world's dumbest artists and writers."Of course, if you did not read the original comics or see these movies, then you will never ever get all of the jokes. But then that is the whole point of satire, right?

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book of parodies
This was a great book to just laugh at. ... Read more

He grew up in the Pacific Northwest, graduating from Federal Way High School in 1994. Excerpt: Dead Meadow is an American hard rock band that formed in Washington, D.C. in 1998. Currently comprising vocalist and guitarist Jason Simon, bassist Steve Kille and drummer Stephen McCarty, the band has released five studio albums and one live album. Dead Meadow formed in 1998 from the remnants of two young indie DC bands, The Impossible Five "Gern Blandsten Records" and its immediate follow-up Colour. The band started as Jason Simon on vocals and guitar, Steve Kille on bass, and Mark Laughlin on drums. They began to combine 70s hard rock and 60s psychedelic rock with themes from authors such as J. R. R. Tolkien and H. P. Lovecraft. The first album, Dead Meadow, was released in 2000 on Tolotta Records, a label run by Fugazi bassist Joe Lally. The LP version was released by Planaria Records. This was quickly followed by 2001's Howls from the Hills, also released on Tolotta Records. At the completion of "Howls from the Hills" John Peel asked Dead Meadow to record a Peel Session which was recorded in Fugazi's home studio, the first time a Peel Session was recorded outside the BBC studios. Dead Meadow in 1999In Spring 2002, Laughlin parted ways with the band in order to pursue a career as a lawyer. He was replaced by long-time friend Stephen McCarty (previously with Canyon, also of Gern Blandsten). A live album, Got Live If You Want It, was released in mid-2002, which documented one of the last shows with drummer Mark and was produced by Anton Newcombe of Brian Jonestown Massacre. In early 2003 the band signed with Matador Records and released Shivering King and Others. Excerpt: William Orville Douglas (October 16, 1898 January 19, 1980) was a United States Supreme Court Associate Justice. With a term lasting 36 years and 209 days, he is the longest-serving justice in the history of the Supreme Court. In 1975, a Time article called Douglas "the most doctrinaire and committed civil libertarian ever to sit on the court." He was replaced on the Court by John Paul Stevens, and the combination of the tenure of the two justices on the Court stretched 71 years, a seat held longer by two justices than any other. Douglas was born in Maine Township, Otter Tail County, Minnesota, the son of an itinerant Scottish Presbyterian minister from Pictou County, Nova Scotia. His family moved to California, and then to Cleveland, Washington. His father died in Portland, Oregon, in 1904, when Douglas was only six years old. After moving from town to town in the West, his mother, with three young children, settled the family in Yakima, Washington. William, like the rest of the Douglas family, worked at odd jobs to earn extra money...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=365245 ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Kit and Play
I am working on an in-depth research project on Catwoman, and I must admit, even though this book is visually compelling..that is all that it is. Catwoman is constantly viewed as a 'visual' character (read this as meaning sexualized), with little to no attention paid to her origins, actions, etc. It is crazy to see how many books are written on Batman, yet only two appear about Catwoman (both concerned with the visual more than anything else). Interesting....(in a bad cultural commentary way)..

This book is a nice collectable..but dont buy it for research purposes, or expect any in depth commentary on the character. You'll be dissapointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for all Catwoman fans!
This book is a great tribute to Catwoman, and it's just as stylish as she is!Readers will love the purple vinyl cover and will ooh and ahh over the hundreds of color photos. There is information on Catwoman from all the various phases of her life, including comic book, movie, and television appearances. The book contains a small amount of history on Catwoman, but it's not very in-depth.This is supposed to be a fun pictorial tribute to everyone's favorite feline fatale, and that's exactly what it is.

2-0 out of 5 stars Print equivalent of a fan website
This was a very pretty book to look at, but it didn't offer much information. It listed the women who played Catwoman on TV and film, and it gave a bit of background regarding her origin story ... and that was it. The rest was a bunch of cute profile quips, fashion tips, and bits of attitude, all accompanied with collages of panels from the comics.

If you're looking a sassy coffee table book with gorgeous artwork, this book is great. It's spunky, well-designed, and fun to look at. Don't expect much actual background information, though. It didn't offer any info about the various books she's been in. No information about who has written her and who has drawn her (beyond call-out quotes from some of these creators). I really would have liked credits and more descriptive text to accompany the artwork. The additional sketchbook pages were nice but ultimately not much more than what you get in the current comic.

Overall it really reminded me of a puff piece in a women's magazine like Cosmo Girl - very nice to look at, but light on information.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Scratches" the surface
A great-looking, fun book. Not much text, a quick read. Similar format to the "Complete History" compilations of Batman and Superman, but less material. Call it "Complete History Lite".

2-0 out of 5 stars disappointing effort
although this book has lots of pictures (but not as many as you'd think, as some appear more than once), it has practically no content. it's very cute but not worth the 18 bucks. i wish someone would write a real history of catwoman, but this book is not it. ... Read more
