Product Description
Bintou wants braids. Long, pretty braids, woven with gold coins and seashells, just like her older sister and the other women in her family. But she is too young for braids. Instead, all she has are four little tufts of hair; all she ever gets are cornrows. However, when Bintou saves the lives of her two young cousins and is offered a reward of her choosing, Bintou discovers that true beauty comes in many different forms. Rich, earthy illustrations and a heartwarming story capture the spirit of a West African village in this wise tale about a girl who learns she's perfect just the way she is. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My daughter's new favorite book!
We checked this book out from the library yesterday and my daughter had finished reading the entire story before me made it home. After finishing, she asked if we could keep the book instead of returning it to the library. After reading the story with her, I had to purchase this book for her. It's a beautiful Afrikan-Centered children's book and a beautiful story, full of Afrikan tradition and culture. I prefer my children read books that deal with real life as opposed to fairy tales. This is a story we can actually see ourselves in, unlike Snow White, Cinderella and the likes. I highly recommend this book for young Afrikan children, especially those in the Diaspora.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bintou's Braids is a great success with students!
I'm a second grade teacher and purchased, Bintou's Braids to enhance our study of Africa. All the students responded to the story. The background information and discussion suggestions opened up a meaningful dialogue that allowed students to connect personally with the text.Furthermore, the multicultural component provided students with background information about a culture/country unfamiliar to them.

5-0 out of 5 stars "My hair is short and fuzzy."

In a heartwarming story that reflects on family and tradition, Bintou, a child, grows up in her West African village yearning to have long braids like the older girls, with seashells and coins attached in the ancestral tradition. Poor Bintou only has four little tufts of hair wrapped in colored string, nothing nearly as attractive as the older girls. Bintou's baby brother is soon to be baptized and given a name, so she greets her grandmother in the village the day before the feast. Thanks to her many years, Bintou's grandmother knows everything; when Bintou asks why she can't have braids, the grandmother relates the tale of Couma, a girl who had such braids with seashells and coins and thought of nothing but herself. The elders decided that little girls could only have corn rows, so that they would make friends, play and learn before worrying about such grownup things. Still, Bintou dreams at night of braids with coins and seashells.

The day of the feast, Bintou escapes from the festivities for a while near the water's edge, where she hears cries for help; two boys are in danger of drowning. Taking a shortcut through the brambles, she tears loose two of her four tufts of hair, but finds help in time to save the boys. Promised a reward for her quick thinking, Bintou's older sister says, "She wants braids!" That night Bintou dreams a different dream, of yellow and blue birds nesting in her soft hair. The next morning, as her grandmother dresses her hair, she expects the usual corn rows; when Bintou looks in the mirror, a pretty girl stares back at her, hair sprinkled with blue and yellow birds. She is content to wait until she is grown for her braids.

While speaking to the importance of family and reverence for tradition, this wonderful story also acknowledges a little girl's dream of growing up, only not too quickly. Surrounded by love and the wisdom of her extended family, Bintou is nurtured through the phases of childhood, perfect just as she is. The vivid illustrations portray Bintou's family in their West African village, the girl's imaginative dreamscapes, the world through the eyes of a child, a perfect match for a timeless tale. Luan Gaines/2006.

5-0 out of 5 stars one of our favorites
This is a classic in our family. We've had it for a couple years (starting when my daughter was 4?).It is very well written and enjoyable to read, partly because it's told in Bintou's voice. As a bonus- it's also a good book for instilling pride in a little girl's hair.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful in so many ways
This is a beautifully illustrated book and a beautiful story with wonderful messages about bravery, what girls should focus on (playing and learning instead of vanity), wisdom of ancestors, adults honoring children's desires while also standing their ground and providing wise guidance. It's also a lovely way to learn a bit about West African people and customs.I recommend it highly. ... Product Description
The Sixth Edition of this path-breaking course book maintains the organization familiar to its many users. Following an introduction to the history, institutional context and theory of administrative law, students are exposed to four main topics: the political control of administration by Congress and the executive branch; formal agency processes for lawmaking adjudication and rulemaking; government access to and required disclosure of information; and judicial remedies for official illegality. 3-0 out of 5 stars Meh
It's a decent overview of the wineries and breweries of Minnesota, but nothing you couldn't find online. The material is already dated in some cases. Two things about this book really bother me:

1) The numerous spelling and grammar mistakes.
2) The binding. It's a tall, thin book, making it hard to open and see the print on the pages.

Decent enough to take along on a road trip, but it's a hack job and far inferior to an hour of web searching. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars OK, but somewhat out of date...
Bought this prior to our trip to Grand Canyon last week. It was slightly informative about local attractions and restaurants, but had nothing I couldn't have found out by just searching Google. It didn't even have our hotel (Holiday Inn Express), even though the book was supposedly updated recently. I found better information about the Grand Canyon from the actual National Park website. Save your money, just research your trip on the internet ahead of time.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book is helpful...
This book is great if you're going to the Grand Canyon to see the popular touristy areas. It touches briefly on different activities available in the park, lodging, camping & restaurants. Not real helpful if you want to plan longer backpacking trips but discusses popular day hikes/short overnight trips.. With the limited time that we'll have to spend in the park it is good for our needs.

5-0 out of 5 stars GOod overview
This job does a nice job of detailing the pro's and con's of various accomodations and restaurants within the park, detailing the various ways of touring the park (by airplane, helicopter, hiking group or tour, rafting, donkeys, etc.) and suggesting hikes for those who are very fit and those of us who are less so.It deals equally well with all parts of the Grand Canyon from the North to the South Rim, and suggests nice daytrips from a variety of points within the park.It even gives good suggestions regarding the best times to visit, and how to take full advantage of the shuttle buses in the park, the best places to park ,and the best driving routes to avoid congestion.First rate!

4-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly GOOD!
I bought this book a month ago or so, figuring it would make an interesting read.Well, having absolutely no recollection or knowledge of the videogame on which this book is based (probably a good thing, I'm guessing), I was very pleasantly surprised by this book!

The writing is very good, with none of the annoying grammar mistakes you find in "modern" roleplaying games, and the characters and setting, while not 100% useful in most peoples' games (the setting has a few, let's just say, "quirky" steampunk elements like giant trains that cut a swath through the forest on no tracks), most of it was great.

Definitely worth buying if you are into the D6 system (although the game is dual statted for the Masterbook system, which it actually favors slightly). It won't be worth anything much down the line, so buy it if you see it for a good price.I think I paid $20. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great tour book!
My family is going on our first ever tour of several national parks soon and this book is terrific. It is informative, well-laid out, and full of helpful information. It is great to have background on each park, trustworthy lodging recommendations and suggestions for interesting side-trips.There are many, easy-to-read maps for each chapter. I appreciate the suggested itineraries for half-day, one day, and two day stays in each area.A great resource!

4-0 out of 5 stars Some helpful pointers...
I wish I had more time to read this book before going on my vacation this year, but we did pull out some helpful hints from the book.

It provided some good feedback on local restaurants, as well as some kooky out of the way attractions we really enjoyed. I would definitely recommend it for your southwestern getaway.

3-0 out of 5 stars out of date and out of touch
I took this book with me on my vacation to the southwest and I found it disappointing. The restaurants it suggested in Flagstaffwere all quirky or trendy. Lake Havasu City is completely different from what they describe, as the major tourist section went bankrupt TWO YEARS AGO.It describes Las Vegas, but none of the natural and historic wonders so close to it like Valley of Fire State Park, which is filled with ancient petroglyphs, incredible scenery, and wildlife. It was somewhat useful, but I'd recommend getting it from the library just to get some ideas of places to go.Don't rely on it for comprehensive, up-to-date information. ... Read more
