This second volume continues the formula of the first be collecting various different stories, from established ones (B.P.R.D. and Umbrella Academy) to stories from webcomic artists (Wondermark) to new stories by established artists (Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon) to stories from creators I haven't heard of before.

On a whole, I liked this volume better than the first one. Other than Steve Niles' Criminal Macabre stories, I liked most of them; and the Criminal Macabre stories weren't without merit as they had some nice artwork.

The only real downfall of this volume is that there isn't any story that stands out like Sugarshock! in the previous volume. The Umbrella Academy, Wonder Twins Activate, and Nothingest are the highlights here.

As always, you can check the stories out on the web first, but you get a lot of comics for your money and they are above par. ... Read more

A Must
This book is great for Firefly and Serenity fans, with all sorts of interesting tidbits, photos, etc.Obviously, if you're not a Firefly fan, then it's not for you.

got through the mail pretty fast. was not dissappointed with the book at all. just like the other companions for firefly series. well written with helpful extras and other firefly information that only a companion guide can give. wasn't sorry I ordered the book at all!!

Joss Whedon talks about everything inside and outside of the movie. He talks about his inspiration, writing style, favourite scenes, Firefly (of course!) and its world, challenges, casting and all the other usual things you find in a "making of" book.

The 40 pages of interview provide a very good behind-the-scenes look at how the movie was produced. There are plenty of stories on shooting, the scenes, stunts and working with all the different actors and crew on set.

Just after the interview is the full shooting script for the movie. It is laid out with set photos, storyboards and concept art. It's pretty cool they included the designs for several ships and weapons.

For those who love the movie and TV series, this book will make for a very nice collection.

Great art & good story!!
John Cassaday is the star here.His art is ridiculously good here.Whedon's script is good but the villain reveal is dissappointing because JOe Kelly & Steven Seagle did before, just not as good.Overall, still a good read!

Huh?
Definitely didn't live up to my expectations or build on how awesome Vol. 1 was!

Something off here
When compared to the first volume, this second volume of Astonishing X-Men is way,way off the mark. As a stand-alone comic, it is completely confusing and is dependent on Vol 1 for continuity. Having said that, the plot here veers off completely to encompass a Danger room suddenly transforming itself into Artifical Intelligence with enhanced sentient thoughts, courtesy of Shiar Technology. This was given as a throwaway remark and one has to be aware of past X-men stories for this to make some sense.

There is some hint of Emma Frost's duplicity, hinted at in Vol 1 but now further developed here to involve the Hellfire Club, another X-Men thing requiring some explanation which was not offered here.

But the whole plot of this comic seems to hinge on the Danger room killing off one student and endangering the others. Prof Xavier appears in this issue to combat the Danger room but then drops out of the scene. There is the pointless cameo appearance of the Fantastic Four which is just padding. If not for the drawings, I would have rated this a one star. I am not quite sure what the other 5 star reviewers see in this comic.

Great book
Excellent package. The only problem for me was that I'm not familiar with X-Men canon enough to know what the Hellfire club and Cassandra Nova are - thus first ark in this volume ("Torn") was pretty hard to grasp. But once I did some Wikipedia digging and rereading the arc it became much better.
The ending of the saga really shines. Hope Whedon returns to this series someday and resolves all unresolved topic he left.

Stunning Artwork, Weak Story
"The Runaways" are an eclectic set of young heroes - multi-cultural and edgy - a younger, sexier version of the Fantastic Four.Nico, a "Japanese girl by way of Glendale" leads the talented pack of "kids."The books combine action stories with mentions of real issues - a couple of the girls are homosexual.

The talented Brian Vaughan created "Runaways", but Joss Whedon wrote this set of episodes.Perhaps unable to live up to the high concept, this set of Runaways stories was disappointing.I love the concept of the "kids" but I just found this story arc to be convoluted and silly.Taking the kids back in time seemed pointless when all they were doing is fighting other super-powered villains - they could have done that in the present.

Michael Ryan's stunning artwork got me through the weak storyline.His drawings are fantastic - I really love the way he draws the girls, especially lead character Nico.He draws amazing proportion and detail - too bad the story doesn't live up to the standard of his mind-blowing artwork. ...
