Product Description
Battlefield Earth: A Saga of the Year 3000 is an American film adaptation of the novel Battlefield Earth by L. Ron Hubbard that was released on May 12, 2000. Directed by Roger Christian, the film stars John Travolta, Forest Whitaker, and Barry Pepper. The film depicts an Earth that has been under the rule of the alien Psychlos for 1,000 years and tells the story of the rebellion that develops when the Psychlos attempt to use the surviving humans as gold miners. Travolta, a long-time Scientologist, had sought for many years to make a film of the novel by Hubbard, the founder of Scientology. He was unable to obtain funding from any major studio due to concerns about the film's script, prospects, and connections with Scientology. The project was eventually taken on by an independent production company, Franchise Pictures, which specialized in rescuing stars' stalled pet projects. Travolta signed on as a co-producer and contributed millions of dollars of his own money to the production, which was largely funded by a German film distribution company. ... Read more

Excerpt: Paul LeRoy Bustill Robeson (April 9, 1898 January 23, 1976) was an internationally renowned American bass-baritone concert singer, actor of film and stage, All-American and professional athlete, writer, multi-lingual orator, scholar and lawyer who was also noted for his wide-ranging social justice activism. A forerunner of the civil rights movement, Robeson was a trade unionist, peace activist, Phi Beta Kappa Society laureate, and a recipient of the Spingarn Medal and Stalin Peace Prize. Robeson achieved worldwide fame during his life for his artistic accomplishments, and his outspoken, radical beliefs which largely clashed with the Jim Crow climate of the pre-civil rights United States. He became a prime target of the right during the McCarthyist era. Despite his being one of the most internationally famous cultural figures of the 20th century, persecution by the US government and media virtually erased Robeson from mainstream US culture and subsequent interpretations of US history, including civil rights and black history. Robeson was the first major concert star to popularize the performance of Negro spirituals and was the first black actor of the 20th century to portray Shakespeare's Othello on Broadway. As of spring 2010 Robeson's run in the 194345 Othello production still holds the record for the longest running Shakespeare play on Broadway. In l...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=23229 ... Excerpt: Hope Floats is a 1998 American romantic drama film directed by Forest Whitaker, and starring Sandra Bullock, Harry Connick, Jr. and Gena Rowlands. Birdee Pruitt (Sandra Bullock) is a Chicago housewife who is invited onto a talk show under the pretense of a free makeover. The makeover she is given is hardly what she has in mind...as she is ambushed with the revelation that her husband Bill has been having an affair behind her back with his mistress Connie, who also happens to be her best friend. Humiliated on national television, Birdee and her daughter Bernice (Mae Whitman) move back to Birdee's hometown of Smithville, Texas with Birdee's eccentric mother Ramona (Gena Rowlands) to try and make a fresh start. As Birdee and Bernice leave Chicago, Birdee gives Bernice a letter from her father, telling Bernice how much he misses her. Birdee struggles to make a new life for herself as a working single mother and must deal with the growing attraction between herself and a former high school classmate, Justin Matisse (Harry Connick, Jr.). She also must deal with rebuilding her relationship with her estranged mother, her ailing father (who suffers from Alzheimer's Disease), and her daughter, who wants desperately to be with her father and blames her mother for the breakup, even going so far as to try and sabotage the romantic overtures Justin makes towards Birdee. Bernice's efforts also drive a wedge between her and her mother, leaving Birdee, in her state of depression, becoming more open to the idea of Bernice going to her father. Adding to Birdee's heartache is her former status as the school queen bee and a three-time beauty...http://booksllc.net/?id=3146380 ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Very Enjoyable Read...
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I am a brain tumor survivor & I could relate to a lot of the stories. I also found the descriptions of the medical procedures to be very fascinating. I didn't agree with all of the author's viewpoints, but overall I enjoyed hearing his story. I would recommend this book to anyone who has gone through brain surgery, knows someone who has gone though brain surgery, or who wants to hear some inspiring stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightens the health care debate with real situations
An excellent book, I will give this book to the college students
and high school students interested in a career in medicine. By telling the stories of seven patients, Dr. Black provided insight into the political, academic, and clinical world of medicine. From a political perspective, the readers gain an understanding of who gets awarded National Science Foundation grants. From an academic view, Dr. Black allows the reader to peek into the university and see its prejudices, bureaucracy, and intellectual silos. With personal stories, the author takes the reader into the hospital, the organization that has to decide which uninsured patients get treated, how much information it discloses to the patient, and the disparities of care between rich and poor. Policy makers and citizens interested in making informed judgments on health care should take the time to read Dr. Black's book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and Educating! Absolutely Wonderful!
This is a MUST READ for anyone who needs to learn more about brain tumors or just anyone who is a lay "medical geek" like me. Dr. Black displays his in-depth expertise, compassion, and team spirit through story-telling about his actual patients and their brain surgeries. Not only did I learn about staging (and location of tumors), I learned technical terms, I learned about doctors with a true concern for their patients, and I learned more about how cell phone usage could possibly be causing brain tumors. The one thing I wish would have been discussed more is a more detailed description on the history and physiology of the "blood-brain barrier." I rate this as the number one non-fiction book I have read this year, and I read a lot.

5-0 out of 5 stars You may need your head examined if you don't read this book!!
XXXXX

"Like fighter pilots...neurosurgeons must have finely developed motor skills, pinpoint accuracy, and the ability to remain cool in high-risk situations. But the best of the best also have something more--the ability to empathize with their patients, and a well-developed appreciation for both the natural wonders and the natural dangers that are ever present within the brain...[There are] only about fifty neurosurgeons who specialize in brain tumours.Of these, I am one of just a few who do more than 250 surgeries a year...

My goal [during surgery] is never to touch the brain itself...it is not possible to manipulate normal brain tissue without...triggering the body's alarms and creating neurological deficits. But if I can...sneak in and snatch the tumor without touching the brain...[then] patients...can emerge from surgery intact. They will then be able to live out the full span of their lives, or at least have more precious time to share with their loved ones. And that is why I do what I do--and why I want to share my story."

The above is found in this fascinating book by Dr. Keith Black, a neurosurgeon specializing in the treatment of brain tumors and a campaigner for the funding of cancer treatment. He is chairman of the neurosurgery department and director of the Maxine Dunitz Neurological Institute at Cedar-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California.Arnold Mann, co-author of this book, is a leading medical journalist who has been writing about medicine for twenty-five years.

In this book, you will learn about Black's life, his research, and some of his best-remembered brain tumor patients.Significantly, you'll learn about his life's work to make a difference in the field of neurology.

Don't worry about being overwhelmed by medical terminology since everything is adequately explained. Thus, the reader gets an insider's view of what it's like to be in the operating room with Black where everything is explained in accessible language.

One honest chapter is devoted to the challenges and obstacles Black faced as an African-American while training to become a neurosurgeon. His struggle paid off as he is now considered by many as the best doctor in the world for brain tumors. In fact, "he is the doctor people find when all the other doctors have given up."

Finally, this is not a technical book for people suffering from a brain tumor (and was never meant to be). That is, it's not a "Surviving a Brain Tumor" type of book.

In conclusion, if you want a rare, behind-the-scenes look into the life of one of the most skilled neurosurgeons in the world, then read this book STAT. (Latin for 'statim' meaning 'at once').

4-0 out of 5 stars Dreamy
This is a good, contemplative book about a paperboy going through his route, waking at night and returning when his house awakens.

5-0 out of 5 stars Universal Appeal and Heart Warming
In this beautifully illustrated book, a little boy and his dog get up before dawn to deliver papers. The pictures are painted with vivid primary colors showing his home, neighborhood paper route and his faithful brown dog who goes with him each morning. When the delivery is done, the sun is coming up, but not before he and his doggie get home, go upstairs and slip back under the covers.Though more universal in appeal, especially to paper carriers and those who know and love them, it also has a multi cultural appeal. The young paper carrier is African American. The positive values of hard work, sacrifice of getting up before dawn, independence of the little boy getting his own breakfast and service to the community as well as the companionship of a pet are themes than shine through this delightful story.

5-0 out of 5 stars quiet and mysterious
my kids love this book! a staff person at an independent bookstore recommended it to us and i chose it on the strength of that recommendation alone. let me just say that i'm glad i did. my children are fascinated by the boy's flashlight and his dog and the idea of being out exploring the world while it's still dark. this is one book that sparks a lot of discussion among them about what this child might encounter while he's out and what the world is like when everyone is asleep. i can't recommend this one highly enough!

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite children's book
Dav Pilkey has written a simple and moralistic children's story that is as subtle and warm as a cup of hot chocolate on a cold Saturday morning.I have read this book over and over to all three of my children since the oldest was an only child and now at 10, 8, and 6 years old, they never tire of it nor do I.Having lived in the Pacific Northwest and believe this is where Dav Pilkey resides, he perfectly captures the 'land of pointy trees' in his beautiful, evocative illustrations. It is hard to believe this is the same author of the Captain Underpants series, the obnoxious albeit humorous stories about the eponymous super hero.I love this book and discovering and sharing it with my children as been a delight of motherhood.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best part is the art... but wow, that art!
This is one of those books which I would call "pretty". And the illustrations certainly do merit the Caldecott Honor. They are stunning and have a dream-like quality to them. The story is one of those that has no real plot, but I have to admit there is something enchanting about the descriptions of the early morning that flows very well with these incredible illustrations.Definitely worth a look. ...
