1-0 out of 5 stars Call of the Wild Review
I read this book, and it was one of the worst books I ever read. Since London was paid by the page, he used a much flowery language as possible and the plot was way to repeticious. It was not sad at all, and I could predict the next thing that was going to happen. He could of restrictedthat book from the 101 pages to the length of the first chapter. I wouldnot recommend this book to read.

Product Description
He’s Hollywood’s most indestructible bad boy. He has three Oscars and more Academy Award nominations than any actor in film history. Now, John Parker takes a look at the life and art of one of the most dynamic actors of our generation.

Jack Nicholson is the most popular film actor since Marlon Brando, and as he swaggers well into his seventh decade, he shows no sign of losing any of his astonishing star power. Here, drawing on interviews with many of Nicholson’s Hollywood associates, John Parker pieces together a complex portrait of the star—his tangled and tumultuous childhood, his wives and high-profile romances, his brilliant film career, and his Oscar-winning triumphs in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Terms of Endearment, and As Good as It Gets. Find out what lies behind that famous shark’s smile—and be prepared to be surprised. Journalist John Parker’s previous books include Arise Sir Sean Connery, King of Fools, and Five for Hollywood. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars SHINING BRIGHTLY !!!
This is a very interesting look at Jack's life from childhood on - including his friendships and how these friendships affected his life.I enjoyed this thoroughly, so much, that I am reading it a second time!

2-0 out of 5 stars Nothing New Here & Somewhat Annoying
I would recommend Patrick McGiligan's biography because it has the research and detail one would expect of a biography. This book, (I assume written by an Englishman since it was published in England and uses words like "chum",etc) is a composite of what has already been published on Jack Nicholson. Its even balanced and focuses on seminal events in Nicholoson's life and his movies..What is very annoying about this book is the excessive description of the cultural context that surrounded Jack's 60's days...Way too much setting, frankly because there is not any new content here...If you don't know much about Jack, this is not a bad introductory piece....Oh, yes the other thing about this book is way too much (previously published) information on Warren Beatty, Roman Polanski, Marlon Brando, and Robert Evans...the writer goes into great details on the problems in their lives...not central to subject of this biography...

This is a biography of Jack Nicholson, who recently starred as the Joker in Batman. The actor, famous for his satanic grin and suggestive, laid-back drawl, claims never to have been turned down by a woman. The author, spent time in America, interviewing those close to Nicholson. 5-0 out of 5 stars ADon't Miss!!!
First story so beautiful and poignant, it brought tears to my eyes.London displays a true understanding of the deeper reaches of nature.A remarkably real parable of the civilized dog brought back to his wild roots."White Fang", longer and wildly overwritten, is nevertheless deeply affecting also.Romantic, sentimental, and perhaps somewhat unrealistic. Each story was wonderful and very individual, somewhat amazing considering there are 40 of them."The Sea Wolf" was the best of all, I thought. The character of Wolf Larsen was just totally intriguing. And I have never forgotten (and will probably carry with me to my grave) a line from that book, uttered by Larsen. To paraphase - The most abundant thing on this planet is not air, or water or land. They are all perishable, or can be ruined or consumed in some way or another. It is life, life itself, that is everywhere.Wolf Larsen was one of the most unforgettable characters in fiction that I have ever run across. An amoral man to the nth degree.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully written outdoor adventure stories
If you like the movies you will love these stories.Combines page turning reading witha poetic quality that only Jack London can develop.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than the Call of the Wild!!
Loved White Fang so much I have gone on and read everything this man ever wrote. If you love the outdoors, and can live without T.V. a few nights then get this one. You will not regret the money well spent. ... Read more

Product Description

Action Writing: Jack Kerouac's Wild Form connects the personal and creative development of the Beat generation's famous icon with cultural changes in postwar America. Michael Hrebeniak asserts that Jack Kerouac's "wild form"—self-organizing narratives free of literary, grammatical, and syntactical conventions—moves within an experimental continuum across the arts to generate a Dionysian sense of writing as raw process. Action Writing highlights how Kerouac made concrete his 1952 intimation of "something beyond the novel" by assembling ideas from Beat America, modernist poetics, action painting, bebop, and subterranean oral traditions.

Geared to scholars and students of American literature, Beat studies, and creative writing, Action Writing places Kerouac's writing within the context of the American art scene at midcentury. Reframing the work of Kerouac and the Beat generation within the experimental modernist and postmodernist literary tradition, this probing inquiry offers a direct engagement with the social and cultural history at the foreground of Kerouac's career from the 1940s to the late 1960s.

4-0 out of 5 stars For Academia
That Michael Hrebeniak knows his material is undeniable. That he is also part of the forces of academia and publicity that he explains plagued Jack Kerouac is also undeniable. That he is unaware of this irony is likely also undeniable, given that he never mentions it.This irony runs through Action Writing: Jack Kerouac's Wild Form, as Hrebeniak talks about how beats, like Kerouac, disliked the way academia and popular culture seized their works, and those of their predecessors.Works that once fought against society become common topics in the dominant culture, and the subject of academic works like this book.

In a way, Action Writing: Jack Kerouac's Wild Form is not original as a book, being like any academic paper, made of a whole string of closely packed quotes from previous efforts of others and the novels it discusses. That it reveals the interrelated nature of those works, as influences of Kerouac's style is Hrebeniak's true purpose. However, he spends little time explaining these references, meaning that readers will need background in various areas, such as the books and philosophers mentioned within.I will personally point out that the fellaheen mentioned frequently are simply the Egyptian peasant class. What exactly the beats also meant in mentioning them is not directly stated, any more than the word origin I mentioned.

This book would be best used in a classroom setting, where the general subject area can be covered, in terms of beat writings and American history. It is not meant to teach the reader how to emulate Kerouac's style of action writing, meaning only to contextualize it, and compare it to its times and peers. What Hrebeniak does is find Kerouac's place in the long line of literature and philosophical tradition, as well as history, with references to his ideological borrowing from such diverse sources as the obvious jazz and Buddhism, but also Wolfe, James Joyce, Rousseau, Nietze, as well as Aristotle and many others. So many come up, that the book almost becomes a word salad, jumbled with names, theories, styles, Freud, space-time, cinematography, elegant overarching themes, masculinity, all percolated, Hrebeniak claims, through the mind of Kerouac, as he contemplated Neal Cassidy while on marijuana.

Generally, the main problem I would cite with this book is that it is rather a bit too dense for casual reading. It is very much an academic book, both in terms of literary criticism, and a historical account of Kerouac and his writing environment. This is problematic, of course, in that the author who is the topic, Kerouac, found this kind of analysis dreary, according to Hrebeniak, even.On the plus side, Hrebeniak does well in not completely shying away from problematic features of Kerouac's works, spending some time on the implications of his opinions and depictions of women and various sexual topics and actions.I recommend it, again, for classes on modern American literature, beats, hippies, postwar American suburbia or the cold war.

Originally published in 1903, The Call of the Wild is London's best-known work. Marking the 100th anniversary of the novel, this New Riverside Edition is well timed to place London's work in a new and broader historical context. In addition, the volume will show how the critical reception of the work has changed over time. Due to a resurgence of interest in the study of Jack London during the past decade, a wealth of new material is available to further illuminate The Call of the Wild. Supplementary materials in this volume include other London fiction that predated his writing of this novel, letters he wrote about his intentions in writing it, early reviews of the work, and critical essays from past and present.

The hot blood was freezing on his hands, and the scene yet bright in his eyes, — the man, clutching the table and sinking slowly to the floor; the rolling counters and the scattered deck; the swift shiver throughout the room, and the pause; the game-keepers no longer calling, and the clatter of the chips dying away; the startled faces; the infinite instant of silence; and then the great blood-roar and the tide of vengeance which lapped his heels and turned the town mad behind him."All hell's broke loose," he sneered, turningaside in the darkness and heading for the beach.Lights were flashing from open doors, and tent, cabin, and dance-hall let slip their denizens upon the chase. The clamor of men and howling of dogs smote his ears and quickened his feet. He ran on and on. The sounds grew dim, and the pursuit dissipated itself in vain rage and aimless groping. But a flitting shadow clung to him. Head thrust over shoulder, he caught glimpses of it, now taking vague shape on an open expanse of snow, now merging into the deeper shadows of some darkened cabin or beach-listed craft. Fortune La Pearle swore like a woman, weakly, with the hint of tears that comes of exhaustion, and plunged deeper into the maze of heaped ice, tents, and prospect holes. He stumbled over taut hawsers and piles of dunnage, tripped on crazy guy-ropes and insanely planted pegs, and fell again and again upon frozen dumps and mounds of hoarded driftwood. At times, when he deemed he had drawn clear, his head dizzy with the painful pounding of his heart and the suffocating intake of his breath, he slackened down; and everthe sha... ... Read more

Only a 60 page book full of black and white pictures of these wild horses on a barrier island half in Virginia, half in Maryland.Very timely read for me, as I had just come off Padre Island National Seashore, and here I had this book about Assateague National Seashore, where these wild horses, thought to come from a wrecked Spanish galleon in the 1500s, are protected. However, every July they are herded across to another island for an annual auction that weeds the herd and helps raise money for their care during harsh winters and for the firemen who watch over them.Very interesting short book.Would have preferred pictures in color, however.Horses appear quite stout and muscular, not thin at all, so they must do well to have survived so long on this island. ...
