“No other popular writer of his time did any better writing than you will find in The Call of the Wild.”
--H. L. Mencken

One of the greatest American storytellers, Jack London enjoyed phenomenal popularity in his own time and remains widely read throughout the world. His work is characterized by thrilling action, an intuitive feeling for animal life, and a sense of justice that often manifests itself through violence. There is six feet of headroom, and the deck is unbroken save for two companionways and a hatch for'ard. The fact that there is no house to break the strength of the deck will make us feel safer in case great seas thunder their tons of water down on board."

5-0 out of 5 stars Forty Years with Sourdough Jack
I`ve been using Sourdough Jack`s little book, with pleasure and benefit, since 1966. I bought it somewhere in the mountains in Colorado when I was travelling around and camping in National Forests and Parks in August of that year.

My copy has only about 50 pages and was printed in 1965. It also had a little pack of sourdough starter, stapled inside the front cover. The descendants of that bit of yeast are still going strong and giving culinary pleasure to family and friends here in Australia.

I`ve always enjoyed Jack`s racey and folksey style. I`ve just now made multiple copies of the book ( working through lots of food stains), to pass on to family membersand because the original plastic binding of my copy has disintegrated.

May Jack`s work last for ever !

5-0 out of 5 stars Sourdough Jack's Cookery and Other Things
This spiral bound booklet was first purchased by me at KnotsberryFarm in Southern California, I was on my honeymoon in 1969.I love to bake and this seemed like a good book to start with.

Over the years I have soiled almost every page in this book with flour and eggs and starter.I don't imagine Jack Mabee is still alive but if he is I would like to tell him a big Thank You!

With the use of this book I have converted many people into art of sourdough cookery. The recipes are simple but do require planning ahead.I don't know about the current editions but mine came with a little packet of starter. My using starter now dates to 1969 and is still putting out great pancakes for the breakfast table and bread in the oven.

If you have a chance to get this book and would like to try some great sourdough this book is a great start or should I say starter.

5-0 out of 5 stars From the Past
I can't remember where or when this book came into my possession. But, my daughter reminded me of it this evening when we were on the phone.

This is a quirky, fun book for those who want to experiment with some fine sourdough cooking.Jack Mabee's recipes are easy, fun, and taste darned good.Back when I was baking regularly (in the 1980's), I used the instructions in this book to make some fine breads and plenty of pancakes for the kids.

At the time I was baking once a week -- bread for the table and Saturday-morning sourdough dollar-sized pancakes for the kids. They were so good I ate them off the grill without syrup. The kids put a lot of them away.

Besides the recipes, the book is just fun with many anecdotes and stories from Mabee's past.

It's out of print now, but well worth finding a used copy. That is, it's worth the effort if you like books of this vintage and have a taste for western cooking in the sourdough tradition. ... Read more
