Excerpt: Rowan Douglas Williams (born 14 June 1950) is an Anglican bishop, poet and theologian. He is the current (104th) Archbishop of Canterbury, Metropolitan of the Province of Canterbury and Primate of All England, offices he has held since early 2003. Williams was previously Bishop of Monmouth and Archbishop of Wales (making him the first Archbishop of Canterbury in modern times not to be appointed from within the Church of England and the first bishop to serve as primate of two provinces of the Anglican Communion) and had spent much of his earlier career as an academic at the Universities of Cambridge and Oxford successively. His primacy has been marked by much speculation that the Anglican Communion (of which the Archbishop of Canterbury is symbolic head) is on the verge of fragmentation and by Williams's attempts to keep all sides talking to one another. Williams was born in on 14 June 1950 in Ystradgynlais, Swansea, Wales, into a Welsh-speaking family. He was the only child of Aneurin Williams and Dolphine (Del, Nancy) Morris - Presbyterians who converted to Anglicanism in 1961. He was educated at the state school Dynevor School in Swansea, at Christ's College, Cambridge, where he studied theology, and at Wadham College, Oxford, where he took his DPhil in 1975. He lectured at the College of the Resurrection in Mirfield, West Yorkshire for two years. In 1977 he returned to Cambridge to teach theology, first at Westcott House, having been ordained deacon in Ely Cathedral that year and was ordained priest in 1978...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=70537 ... Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Dorothea Minola Alice Bate FGS (8 November 1878 13 January 1951), also known as Dorothy Bate, was a British palaeontologist, a pioneer of archaeozoology. Her life's work was to find fossils of recently extinct mammals with a view to understanding how and why giant and dwarf forms evolved. Born in Carmarthenshire, Bate was the daughter of Police Superintendent Henry Reginald Bate and his wife Elizabeth Fraser Whitehill. She had an older sister and a younger brother. She had little formal education and once commented that her education "was only briefly interrupted by school". In 1898, at the age of nineteen, Bate got a job at the Natural History Museum in London, sorting bird skins in the Department of Zoology's Bird Room and later preparing fossils. There she remained for fifty years and learned ornithology, palaeontology, geology and anatomy, in the early years often working as a piece-worker. In 1901 Bate published her first scientific paper, A short account of a bone cave in the Carboniferous limestone of the Wye valley, which appeared in the Geological Magazine, about bones of small Pleistocene mammals. The same year, she first visited Cyprus, at her own expense, to search for bones there, finding twelve new deposits in ossiferous caves, among them bones of Hippopotamus minor. In 1902, with the benefit of a hard-won grant from the Royal Society, she returned to Cyprus, and in a cave in the Kyrenia hills discovered a new species of dwarf elephant, which she named Elephas cypriotes, later described in a paper for the Royal...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=14388057 ... High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Reginald Albert "Red" Forman (born December 7, 1927 in Baltimore, Maryland) is a fictional character on the FOX Network's TV series That '70s Show. Forman was played by Kurtwood Smith. Red's hobbies include working with his power tools, drinking beer, watching television (especially sports events involving Wisconsin teams), reading the newspaper, hunting, and fishing. In general Red enjoys being left alone, and doesn't care that he has few real friends besides Kitty and sometimes Bob. He dislikes talking to his neighbors, the Pinciottis, because he might end up having to spend time with them, something which happens more than he would like. Red also enjoys killing things, such as every new batch of squirrels that appears in the spring, and the chipmunks who steal the tomatoes Kitty grows in the garden. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Great idea but not a very strong ending.
This book starts out with a really great idea.A sleasy character involved with the drug community rapes two women, twins, and gets away with it on a technicality. Then, a woman fitting the twins' description shoots him in a restaurant in front of numerous witnesses. Can the prosecution prove beyond a reasonable doubt which ONE of the twins did it?

The problem I had with this is the supposed shocker evidence that pops up (I won't ruin the ending for anyone who has not read this). It was such a shock to the defense and if this high priced lawyer is supposed to be so smart, then why is it that I knew where the prosecution was going with it long before he did? That and the big revelation at the end tying up the loose end as to why the rapist got off in the first place was not really that surprising to me either.

Finally, I really wish that someone (his editor maybe??) had told Mr. Gruenfeld that if someone doesn't care, they COULDN'T care less. His main character must have said five times that he "could care less" and each time I had to cringe.Sorry... real pet peeve of mine.

This book is okay if you're between books or are going to the beach where you can read and not worry about missing any details that will render you unable to solve the big mystery on your own.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Writer!
This guy just flat out writes well. This is the third book of his that I've read, and although it's not his absolute best, it's still a very good read. The book is actually deserving of 3 1/2 stars.

3-0 out of 5 stars double barrel vengence
style is dense, yet compelling. narrator spends half the time on introspection, slowing the pace to explain his thinking. the one-upmanship in legal strategies becomes as tedious as reading commentary on a sports event. the main character's ruminations come off more like polonius than hamlet. still, worthwhile reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Here's One For Courtroom Lovers
About 75% of this novel takes place in the courtroom. If you love well done trial scenes this is the book for you. The technical aspects of the trials seemed quite complex at times, but were always interesting. I was amazed that the author, who doesn't seem to have a law degree, was able to write so convincingly about the legal world. The author even varied from the usual protagonist stereotype of "tall, dark and handsome." His hero prosecutor, is short, dumpy and not handsome at all. The first thing I did after reading the book is to come to this website and order all the other Gruenfeld novels.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best work of fiction, in any genre, I've read all year.
Gruenfeld is one of those rare writers who achieves a major triumph on his first outing (IRREPARABLE HARM) and then just keeps getting better. THE HALLS OF JUSTICE is a beautifully written, relentlessly compelling and suspenseful tale of the law spinning out of control, peopled with fascinating characters, profound insights and delicious twists and turns. The last chapter is a knockout, and seems to come out of left field, but a quick review reveals that Gruenfeld practically shouted the ending out to us dozens of times throughout the book. To have pulled off this feat is a tribute to the kind stunning skill and craft that comes along all too rarely. Along those lines, I must say that, as a female, I found the description of a rape in the very first chapter difficult to read. But what amazed me was that there is virtually no graphic depiction at all: what is happening is almost completely inside the reader's head, and nothing scares us more than our own imaginations. This brilliant feat of evocative writing is truly remarkable, as is the extraordinary outrage Gruenfeld manages to stir up in us as the rest of the story proceeds. He is probably better at writing about women than any other male writer (and most females, as well), and that ability reaches a major peak in this book. Why Gruenfeld isn't better known is a complete mystery to me; I feel like I found a genuine diamond of a novelist among much of the roughage that passes for literature these days. I can hardly wait untilhis next book ... Read more

It also includes 16 full color pages of photographs. Several other B&W photographs are scattered about the book.

The book is about growing Bromeliads, or at least growing Bromeliads in Australia. It occasionally has some local reference to an Australian city or region, but mostly the information is generic. It does suffer from regular references to the metric system and Celsius temperatures. For this reader, being a Yank and living on the frozen tundra up here in Wisconsin, metric & celsius measures don't make much sense.

Facts in the book are modestly interesting and modestly informative. It tends to chase around the facts. For example, "overwatering will rot the plants". Dah - yah think? So, what exactly is the proper amount of water? The book is not always crisp about specifics.

It's a good book, but not a great book. There is much information, but the book's structure makes it hard to find. Plant photographs are not adjacent to their descriptions - you have to page around to find the photo. The text is small and therefore reading gets to be a chore.

I like sections of the book, but other sections could be much improved. The book is inexpensive, and by that measure you get good value. For the money, it's a good introduction to growing Bromeliads. ... Read more

The general opinion of their contemporaries appears to have been that the lady's charms were brought to his Majesty's notice by the valet-de-chambre Lebel, the indefatigable purveyor of the Parc-aux-Cerfs, at the solicitation of the "Roue." According to one story, Lebel invited Jeanne, Radix de Sainte-Foy, her lover of the moment, and some other persons to sup with him in his apartments at Versailles, where the King, who had been an unseen spectator of the banquet, "through a secret window made in the dining-room wall," was so enraptured with her beauty and vivacity that he ordered her to be brought to him the following day, or, according to other versions, the same evening.1A more probable solution of the question, however, which attributes the meeting to accident, is to be found in a letter written by Jean du Barry, in 1776, to Malesherbes, then Minister of the Household to Louis XVI. The "Roue," who on the death of Louis XV. had been promptly exiled, was desirous of visiting Paris, "in order to see his doctor, his oculist, and his creditors"; and, in the hope of securing permission to do so, enters into a sort of justification of his life, including an explanation of his share in the introduction of "Mademoiselle de Vaubernier" to the late King. Here is what he says on the matter:"Dutens's Memoires d'un voyageur qui se repose (edit. 1806), ii. 36."Having at that time no other care than that of watching over the education of my son, page to the King, who possessed but indifferent health, I withdrew into a very limited circle of acquaintances. And it was then that I begged Madame Ranc.on and her daughter, Mademoiselle Vaubernier, to take charge of my... ... Read more
