Product Description
Increasingly, political scientists are describing their empirical research or the reasoning behind their choices in empirical research using the terms "experiment" or "experimental." One of the primary reasons for doing so is the advantage of experiments in establishing causal inferences. In this book, Rebecca B. Morton and Kenneth C. Williams discuss in detail how experiments and experimental reasoning with observational data can help researchers determine causality. They explore how control and random assignment mechanisms work, examining both the Rubin causal model and the formal theory approaches to causality. They also cover general topics in experimentation such as the history of experimentation in political science; internal and external validity of experimental research; types of experiments - field, laboratory, virtual, and survey - and how to choose, recruit, and motivate subjects in experiments. They investigate ethical issues in experimentation, the process of securing approval from institutional review boards for human subject research, and the use of deception in experimentation. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars good for revision
This book is not just for preparing to take the Putnam. More broadly, the problems are a great revision set. The subjects range from multivariate integration to finite series to infinite sums and classical analysis. There are also questions drawn from geometry, group theory and linear algebra. A formidable range. The level of difficulty is suitable for a third year undergraduate maths major.

Interested readers may want to scope out the companion Red Book by the same authors.

3-0 out of 5 stars 100 of'em!!!!!
this book is directed towards high school students preparing to take mathematics competetion such as the CMC and IPO. the book contains 100 thinking skills math question with solutions. Being a high school student (with a huge intrest for math) i was able to solve 71 problems, but i must admit that i really did face ALOT of problems solving some of them.(wait till you see the solution for question #5, #8, #41 and 46 Recomended to any high school student prepared to sit any exam or have an intrest for pure thinking skills math qestions, but if you are looking for something REALLY hard then you best look somewhere else...

5-0 out of 5 stars Memories of Viet Nam
I stumbled across a reference to this book while doing a search for my Viet Nam unit.I was glad to find a book by someone who had served in the same unit, company and platoon that I was attached to albeit one year earlier than I.I am not sure how this book will be received by someone who was not somehow directly involved with Viet Nam but I had many memories come flooding back while reading this book.At first it was difficult to read because some memories were not pleasant but the more I read the more I remembered the horrors of the war but I also have reflected on the good times and good friends I had while there. My Sister, Brother-in-law and nephew read the book before I had the courage to finish it and each of them gave it a good review. This is not a blood and guts war story although it contains some of that but is a reflection taken from the daily diary of Kenneth D. Williams. For that reason his memories are so clear it seems like you have been transported back to another time and place that was largely forgotten by me and I suspect many other Viet Nam vets. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars text required for study
This text is one of three required for my study of Public Administration in the Masters level. It is easy to understand and an excellent text for understanding the sometimes confusing world of public policy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to Policy Analysis
This is a very effective introductory text for the study of public policy.Rather than focussing exclusively on 'areas' of policy (e.g., agricultural policy, welfare policy, etc...), the authors develop the theoretical tools that allow the student to wrap his/her mind around the bigger issues.Students learn about how markets, governments and other mechanisms of collective action interact to help develop policy responses and the virtues and shortcomnings of each of these mechanisms. The book is easily digestible by undergraduates and is extremely clear, especially when explaining traditionally more complex ideas like social choice dilemmas. All in all, an outstanding text to learn about the study of public policy. ... Product Description
A brilliant and feared critic, Kenneth Tynan was a nabob of the National Theatre alongside Laurence Olivier, and he was also the daring impresario who created "Oh Calcutta". He was a notorious eccentric, a louche sophisticate: connoisseur of cuisine, wine, literature and women. Where else could you find such a judicious blend of aesthetics, theatre lore, love, marriage, sex and politics? These sizzling diaries will remind older listeners of a man whose reputation as the greatest critic of the twentieth century is still unchallenged and introduce younger ones to an electrifying writer who simply could not be boring. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Sparks and Spanking
Great read. Lovely reminder that television and film were once kept alive and kicking by veterans of vaudeville and British musical hall. It's easy enough to say that Tynan was a pervert but even there he writes eloquently about his adventures in spanking and such. A time machine back to an era of style, substance and serious acting. The Marlene Dietrich/JFK anecdote worth the price alone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun stuff.
Tynan is an excellent observer and a thoughtful guy. In this book he writes generally short, sharp bits about whatever is on his mind at the time. Interests include the theater, spanking, his relationships, a movie he is trying to make, writing, fine dining, socialism and his personal financial concerns.

His writing is clear, unsentimental and extremely readable. Most interesting book I've read in some time.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Cautionary Tale
I suggest reading this as a cautionary tale:how a man with so much promise, talent and intelligence, saddled with insecurities and a taste for hedonism, left him broke and feeling like a failure at the end of his life. How terribly tragic. But this book is definitely not a downer.

However, knowing that Kenneth Tynan was a British literary critic, I had reservations about delving into this.I thought it could be a very dry read.Instead, it turned out to be laugh out loud funny, with some serious dish about famous people (the man knew EVERYBODY) and at the same time introspective and melancholic. This book is not for everybody, but for those with a love of brilliant prose and serious wit, the rewards are rich. - Susan Sayles

5-0 out of 5 stars I can't forgive Ken for wasting himself
From THE DIARIES OF KENNETH TYNAN: "Whenever we solve the problem of dreams, we shall not be far from solving the root problems of human identity and creativity. Has anyone noticed the really inexplicable thing about our nightly narrative tapes? They have suspense. This occurred to me last night, when I was involved in a Hitchcock-type chase dream---in which, I suddenly realised, I did not know what was going to happen next. I did not know who would be lurking behind the next door; and I wanted desperately to know. What part of one's mind is it that harbours secrets unknown even to the unconscious? (For in dreams we are surely privy to the unconscious in full flood.) The theory that in dreams we tap a source of energy outside the individual psyche is powerfully reinforced by the presence of suspense."

After Tynan left his job as dramaturg at the National Theatre, he pretty much floundered around for the rest of his life. I wish he had gone back to doing theater reviews. But I guess he was burned out on theater. Maybe he grew bored with the very medium of theater. He said he was profoundly bored with everything ("I shall die writhing in apathy"), but I'm not too convinced of that claim. I wish he had felt an artistic duty to his audience and had then carried out that duty. While reading this thing, I had an overwhelming urge to slap that cigarette out of his mouth and that hairbrush out of his hand and to sternly command him to "do do that voodoo that you do so well".

5-0 out of 5 stars Compelling
I remember Kenneth Tynan from an appearance on The Dick Cavett Show shortly before his 1980 death.Until this book, I was unfamiliar with his work. Now I see what I was missing.

Not only was Tynan a highly skilled writer of prose, but as a critic he saw things for what they were, even if the majority disagreed. He gives Warren Beatty's pretentious and mystifyingly overrated film Shampoo the swift kick to the rear that it deserves, and even finds a fault with Paddy Cheyefsky's Network that I had not detected prior to reading his assessment of the film in his diaries. Tynan also has his say on economics ("Inflation rides high and I believe intentionally" he writes in 1973) and a myriad of other subjects including his preoccupation with spanking.

Overall, these diaries reveal a melancholy soul who found some solace in writing about his life and its disappointments in his journal. Most published diaries promise more than they deliver. Not Tynan's.His diaries are a compelling read. ... Read more

Product Description

In From Iuka to Vicksburg, 1862–1863, Grant leads the Union army to victory. The story of western operations testifies to Grant’s effectiveness. He and his soldiers move through Kentucky, and Tennessee and down the Mississippi Valley during a difficult winter. Ahead is Vicksburg and a turning point in the Civil War. One critic called this volume “probably the most thoroughly documented study of Grant in the West.”

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Take on Grant and the Western Theater
I think the book is better than the other review gave it credit for. I will agree that he does go out of his way to discredit Grant's drinking. But on the whole these are pretty informative books not as dry as the other review says they are. The two new editions by the University of Nebraska Press have great introductions by Grimsley and Simpson. Simpson gives more credit to Williams than the review here gives. These introductions are excellent. But the volumes are not always about Grant. The Kentucky Invasion is covered in the second volume as is the battle of Murfreesboro. I recommend these books to anyone interested in Grant and/or the Western Theater of the Civil War.

2-0 out of 5 stars Overly dry and boring
Kenneth William wrote a series of five books on Ulysses S. Grant in the 1950's. He died before he could complete his supposedly "definitivetreatment" of Grant the general. Williams' books are well-researchedand you will find few factual gaffes. However, his writing style is oftentorturous and his passion for meaningless minutiae will probably drive youcrazy. He excels in listing every detail of a battle until you're shakingyour head or holding it as you reach for the aspirin bottle.

Williams'reverence for Grant is evident throughout. He is also peculiarly defensiveabout the issue of Grant's occasional over-indulgence in whiskey and in hisfootnotes he becomes almost hysterical on this topic. This type ofhagiography is misplaced in a serious work and seriously undermines thecredibility of the work. William's five volumes have been pretty muchforgotten in the modern era and for good reason. He tells the reader almostnothing about Grant as a human being, his private life (pivotal in Grant'sstory) is regally ignored throughout.

If you are interested in examiningGrant as a general, opt for the much superior books by J.F.C. Fuller, available on Amazon. This is a lifeless and boring treatment of a highlycomplex and fascinating man. ... Read more
