Product Description

Awarded the Navy Cross, Lieutenant William Davis, III, of the United States Naval Reserve was cited for "extraordinary heroism" while serving as pilot of a carrier based fighter aircraft on 25 October 1944. "Flying through intense anti-aircraft fire," the citation read, "he made an aggressive attack on a Japanese carrier, first strafing and then delivering a well placed bomb from low altitude. After this attack the carrier was left burning and subsequently sank." The burning carrier was the Zuikaku, the last Japanese carrier afloat that had taken part in the Pearl Harbor attack.

In this gripping memoir, Davis gives us a fighter pilots view of World War II. Recreating the life-and-death drama of dog fighting and dive bombing over the Pacific, Davis recounts how his squadron shot down 155 enemy planes while losing only 2 of their own in aerial combat. No torpedo bomber or dive bomber they escorted was ever downed by an enemy aircraft. His is a story of "courage and skill . . . in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval service," as his citation noted. It is also a rare true-life account of what such heroics feel like behind a cockpit, in the face of a deadly enemy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat Disappointing
I was hoping this book would discuss the dive bombing and dog fighting tactics used by American fighter and bomber pilots against the Japanese.Instead, I got 200 pages of author and pilot William E. Davis' indoctrination into naval aviation.Only the last 1/3 of the book deals with actual combat. The beginning of the book is devoted to Davis' experiences in joining the Navy, waiting for assignment, and organizing large squadron parties. Granted, these can be considered "important" activities, but I was hoping for more recollections of actual combat.

Not to take anything away from Mr. Davis; he did turn out to be a fine pilot and he ended up conducting a successful bombing against the Japanese carrier Zuikaku (the last surviving Japanese carrier from the Pearl Harbor attack). He also shot down several Japanese planes. But, I just couldn't get into the story of Davis' per-war training and his time spent on Hawaii waiting for active combat duty.

I rate this book as only average. While I did find Davis' story of his pre-war training somewhat interesting, I was disappointed with the overall content of the book. There are other books available which do a much better job of describing the actual war in the Pacific than this one. If you enjoy reading about a pilot's training and other exploits, then this book is ok.But, if you want to read about the actual air war in the Pacific, then find something else.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing story and very touching
This book is a page turner. Not many Naval pilot autobiographies and this is one of the best. I really loved it. Thank you Mr. Davis for writing it and sharing your experiences with us.

2-0 out of 5 stars Social History
The book is well written, but the author is more interested in telling about parties in Hawaii and goofy conversations with other pilots rather than talking about the airplanes, tactics,or combat. He recounts lengthy conversations from more than 50 years ago that sound too good to be true. Interesting from a social perspective, but little insight into fighting in the Pacific.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best World War II Books I've Ever Read, Period!!!!!!!
A very human, humorous, and often poignant account of a young man going to war. Some may be put off by the fact that more than half the book is preparatory to actual combat in the South Pacific. If you are one of those people, I would ask you to reserve judgment as the long prelude makes this fabulous story (to paraphrase what Davis says in this memoir "we began to believe in John Paul Jones' 'we have not yet begun to fight'") all the more empathetic and gut-wrenching when the combat actually comes. Davis is the "real deal"; a Navy Cross recipient who helped sink the Japanese carrier Zuikaku (the last surviving carrier from the Pearl Harbor attack). An unforgettable memoir that I'm so pleased its author decided to share.

1-0 out of 5 stars True or Fiction
I do not recommend this book.I was in this squadron and there is so much false stories and tall tales in it that it should be classed as fiction. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nicholas Cage as Davy Crockett? Brilliant.
Yes, I like Garrison Keillor's voice and reading style. And yes, Rachel is right, the bit about the three angel brides could've gotten accidentally dropped and it would've made the story better. And the Paul Bunyan song doesn't sound quite finished.

But from the first listen of Nicholas Cage reading Davy Crockett -- to the umpteenth listen, and counting -- this has been one of my family's favorite CDs.

Shut up before your teeth get sunburned! And... Who asked you to scratch my lice? Nicholas Cage is at his over-the-top best. It drips with hilarious irony. To wit: get a load of the possum who, instead of playing possum, butters up our dear Davy with a few trite compliments and gets a walk! Great stuff. I'll keep listening until I get Davy's Alamo speech memorized.

You got young boys? Get 'em this CD and you won't be disappointed.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Our 5 year old son has been crazy about Davy Crockett since he found out that we would be staying at the Davy Crockett Ranch at Disneyland Paris. We ordered this CD for the trip there. It was very disappointing for our son because the story was above his head. This cd is better for kids aged 13 or older. The story is told in the vernacular from the 1800's - not easy to understand for a 5 year old. Plus, the story got involved with Crockett's political life -- not enjoyable to listen to our son.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
When I purchased this and the Treasury of Fables CD, I had never heard of Rabbit Ears Productions. I listened to Davy Crockett on the way home & couldn't wait to play it for my son (He was 3yrs). He begs to listen to these stories every time we get in the car(Now he's 5yrs). I'm getting at least 2 more Treasury collections for Christmas this year. Thank you Rabbit Ears!

4-0 out of 5 stars Rabbit Ears Treasury of Tall Tales Volume I
Thia is was very enjoyable and easy to listen to. I would feel amyone no mater their age would enjoy this listening to this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy on the ears for the whole family
I purchased this for my daughter's fifth birthday and was very pleased with this collection.
Things I liked about Rabbit Ears Treasury of American Tall Tales:
1. Garrison Keillor has an amazing reading ability. He is easy for everyone to listen to.
2. Each story was backed by original music, written to enhance the mood of the story. It was well played and enjoyable.
3. Almost all of the tales were enjoyed by everyone in my family.
4.Each was an appropriate amount of time (approximately 30 minute per story) to hold interest and provide detail.
5.We have listened to the stories over and over, and no one is tired of them yet!
6.The vocabulary is not dumbed down, but understandable in context.

Things I didn't like:
1.Rip Van Winkle was a bit scary to my five year old.The ghosts' decision to sabotage Rip's future with his family really bothered her a great deal.

2. Occasionally the audio became difficult to hear.Repeat listenings and cranking the sound during quiet moments helped, but shouldn't have been necessary.

3.The bit about Johnny Appleseed believing he will have three angel brides in heaven if he remains pure on earth just kept bringing my mind back to the 9/11 sickos who believed killing innocents would mean they would get virgins in heaven. That's my own personal connection, so it shouldn't be troublesome to kids listening to the story (though adults reading this might feel squeamish after seeing this connection.Sorry.)

This is great for car trips, and a real entertainment bargain.Overall, I would recommend this CD and would buy more Rabbit Ears audio cds in the future. ... Read more

Product Description

The vice of gambling is peculiarly destructive. It spares neither age nor sex. It visits the domestic hearth with a pestilence more quiet and stealthy, but not less deadly, than intemperance. It is at once the vice of the gentleman, and the passion of the blackguard. With deep shame we are forced to admit that the halls of legislation have not been free from its influence, nor the judicial bench unstained by its pollution.

It is against this vice, which is now spreading like a subtle poison through all grades of society, that the present work is directed. The author is not a mere theorist. He speaks from experience--dark and bitter experience. The things he has seen he tells; the words he has heard he speaks again. Some of these scenes curdle the blood in the veins, even when remembered; some of these words, whenever whispered, recall incidents of singular atrocity, and thrill the bosom with horror.

The author professes to speak nothing but the plain truth. He does not aspire to an elegant style of writing, adorned with the ornaments of the orator and the scholar; but to one quality may lay claim, without being thought a vain or immodest man. He speaks with an earnest sincerity. Whatever he says comes from his heart, and is spoken with all the sympathy of his soul.

This work differs from all the previous works of the author. Indeed, it is unlike any thing ever published in this country. It is not a mere exposure of gambling, nor yet an attack on the character of particular gamblers. It is a revelation of a wide-spread organization--pledged to gambling, theft, and villany of all kinds. There are at the present time existing, in our Union, certain organizations, pledged to the performance of good works, which merit the hearty approbation of every honest man. These are called secret societies, although their proceedings, and the names of the officers, with minute particulars, are published in a thousand shapes. Prominent among these beneficial orders stand the Odd Fellows and the Sons of Temperance. But the order, whose history is related in the following pages, differs from all these. Its proceedings, the names of its members or its officers, and even its very existence as a body, have hitherto been secret, and sealed from the whole world. Besides, it is pledged to accomplish all kinds of robbery, aye, and even worse deeds. It has, in more than one deplorable instance, concealed its dark deeds with murder.
