Product Description
In the summer of 1993, James Wood brought terror to the unassuming town of Pocatello, Idaho. Little did the friendly community realize it had opened its arms to serial killer. Wood, the stranger in town, was polite and soft-spoken. He looked quite ordinary-he was a master at appearing normal. In late June, Wood abducted and murdered Jeralee Underwood, the eleven-year-old daughter of a devout Morman familiy. The entire region was shocked and outraged. Now in Eye of the Beast author Terry Adams teams with lead investigator Scott Shaw and forensic psychologist Mary Brooks-Mueller to bring readers a unique perspective on this case. Shaw takes us into the heart of an exhaustive investigation, while Brooks-Mueller shows us the mind of a true sexual psychopath. Having spent years researching this case, the authors are skillful in recreating this true story about James Woods-one of the nation's most unusual serial killers. The case that rocked the Morman Church. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars SO-SO
This book was not bad reading, but I wish that it would have told more about Mr. Wood's childhood. It wasn't the best true crime I have read, but it's worth the time to read for true crime buffs.

4-0 out of 5 stars A compulsive predator.
This book chronicles some of the crimes of James Wood. He was a sociopath made more dangerous because he was so compulsive.

Woods had talent as an artist and most of the time he was viewed as overly friendly. Too much so for some people that he met.

The real hero in the book was Scott Shaw, who connected with Woods well enough to ultimately get a confession and closure on the case of Jeralee Underwood, the 11 year old girl that was his last victim. Along the way, Shaw got confessions about another local rape that could have easily had the same end result as the Underwood case. Woods also confessed to a rape and attempted murder of another teen girl in the St.Louis area.
He eventually solved more than 40 sex crimes and 180 armed robberies that were committed by Woods. Scott Shaw got a close look at the very twisted mind of an unusual type of killer.

Shaw's perception was instrumental when he linked the rape with the later murder and insisted the perpetrator was local, contradicting the profile by the F.B.I.

Some of James Wood's cousins broke the case with information that they provided to the police.

This book is researched thoroughly and it is hard to put this down once you start reading it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very close to home
I grew up just outside of Pocatello, Idaho and was the same age as Jaralee Underwood when she was kidnapped and murdered.James Wood haunted my dreams for many years and I was completely sickened by the things he did and the fact that he was even able to do the things he did...the man should never have walked out of the the Louisiana prison in the first place. What a sick awful man.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good True Crime Novel
This is a well written book that I believe does a good job of exploring the life of James Woods.I recommend this as a good read for any true crime buff who is interested in serial murders.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't ask for better.
I saw the book I wanted, I looked for the best price/shape used book.

It said this book was in great shape, and it is!!!

This is my favorite kind of purchase, by the time you think about it, the shipment is on the porch.

3-0 out of 5 stars Relatively Thorough But Allopathic Perspective
I have used this book as a text for teaching grief and loss to naturopathic medicine and midwifery students for the past 4 years. Medical students find the information thorough, and appreciate the biological causes of pregnancy and neonatal loss, and the case studies at the end of every chapter.Midwifery students find that there is not enough information on grief counseling. To fill that important gap I supplement this book with Worden's Grief Therapy and Grief Counseling. This book would be significantly improved if it included chapters on abreactive grief responses, wholistic grief counseling, multicultural mourning practices, and complementary and alternative medicine approaches to the physical, emotional and spiritual experiences of pregnancy and perinatal loss. ... Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "James Wood," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have James Wood in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with James Wood when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name James Wood, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
This is an outstanding novelization of the film. Christopher Wood really captures the Fleming flavor and style. I was very impressed. A must have literary work for James Bond enthusiasts.

3-0 out of 5 stars Super Reader
A novelisation of a movie based on a book. Yep, that is right. This mostly follows the movie apart from a couple of small differences, and a groovy cover.

Thus, we get hijinks in space, because space adventure was seen to be cool at the time - following Roger Corman's lead.

All that aside though, the work done on this book was pretty decent. Roger Moore's version of Bond, and Jaws, so entertaining enough.

2-0 out of 5 stars so-so novelization of the film
As the James Bond film series progressed, they diverged so far from the Ian Fleming books that they actually released novelizations of two of the films, both written by Christopher Wood.

Wood wrote the screenplays for THE SPY WHO LOVED ME and MOONRAKER (the two films with Jaws), and he wrote paperback novelizations for both. THE SPY WHO LOVED ME for Warner Books, and MOONRAKER for a smaller publisher, Jove. I imagine both these books are out of print now, though the original Fleming books remain in print.

Wood's novelizations are okay. They basically follow his scripts for the films, with some back story added to pad out the book. For instance, in THE SPY WHO LOVED ME we read about how Stromberg found and helped a badly injured Jaws, which is why Jaws was loyal to Stromberg. Then in MOONRAKER we read about how Jaws was upset that his new girlfriend may appear imperfect in Hugo Drax's eyes.

I guess it says something that in Wood's books, Jaws is the most memorable character. Probably because Woods created Jaws, whereas many of the other main characters were Fleming creations.

Wood's SPY WHO LOVED ME is marginally more interesting than his MOONRAKER (both the novelizations and the films).Even so, his books fall short of the Fleming originals, and are for hardcore Bond completists only. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Now THIS is a cool book!
OK, I'm not into woodworking or wood collecting; I'm just interested in, fascinated by all those wonderful woods out there. Enter this book. Anything I want to know about a particular wood?? Well, here it is in this book--or at least a good starton it. The only thing I can compare it to is the Peattie books Natural history of Western Trees and Natural History of Eastern Trees. Those too I would just sit down and read--just because they were interesting. This is just a WAY cool book for anyone interested in wood.

5-0 out of 5 stars What more could you want?
279 woods each on 2 pages with ample information, 2 x 3.25 inch photos of the wood, a 1.25 x 2 inch micrographs for identification, and line drawings of leaves and any fruit.I don't see what else a person could want with the exception of more woods covered. Is there ever enough wood? This book is also blessed by the International Wood Collectors Society, a meticulous bunch. This volume is a good size, not too big or too heavy (yet). Maybe there will be a second volume.Hope so.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful Woods, Useful Guide
After listening to me grumble that I couldn't always tell what exotic aw lumber looks like when finished, the shop manager told me to get a copy of this book.Actually, he ordered me to get the book, since, like most novices, I pestered him incessantly. As usual, he was right.

The meat of this book is a set of 279 two-page descriptions of each wood. The information inclides scientific name, family, distribution, a description of the tree, a description of the lumber, seasoning information, durability, workability, possible uses, supply availability, a photomicrograph, and a photo of the naturally finished wood.Quite a lot more than the average craftsperson might need, but enough to make this a useful volume to a wide audience.

Indexes are provided by common names, family name, and scientific name.I wish their were a few more permutations (I would have liked a listing by geographical sources, having once wanted to know what the native Japanese wodds were. But really, the book has proved most useful as a reference when I am wondering through an exotic wood stash, or evaluating a particular wood for one purpose or another.

It's a very plain spoken volume - just a presentation of the facts in an easily accessible format. An appendix I found particularly interesting discussed wood toxicity (walnut dust drives me crazy).Unfortunately it really only brushes the surface. If you stick to only a few known woods, this book isn't for you, but if you like to explore possibilities than you will indeed find this a useful volume.

4-0 out of 5 stars A tough choice but one I'm happy with
As far as I could tell the only other book that competes with this book is "World Woods in Color". I had the chance to compare the two side by side and here is my take:

The two books are very similar in many ways. They both include about the same number of woods (around 280) and they both have roughly the same sort of information about the woods. Of course 280 is a tiny number compared to the number of woods in the world, but as far as I can tell these books seem to be about the best there is in print on the subject, and these books do probably cover most the woods one can get on the retail market here in the US.

In any case, the small distinctions I noticed between theset two books were:

"Useful Woods" is organized by scientific name, which means that for most of us to find a particular wood we have to start at the index. "World Woods" is alphabetical by common name, which is easier unless you know the wood by a name other than what the authors considered to be the most common name.

"Useful Woods" is published by the International Wood Collectors Society and this orientation is apparent in the text. There is information such as the origins of the scientific names, and the sources for small samples, which most woodworkers are not likely to care much about, although it is interesting on occasion to read this information.

The color pictures of the woods in "World Woods" are larger but the pictures in "Useful Woods" are plenty large enough for me (2" x 3"). "Useful Woods" includes black and white end-grain pictures, which are useful for identification of an unknown sample. Single pictures are always hard when one is trying to capture something as variable as wood and so it's not surprising that some pictures are better than others. For example, the pictures of Lacewood in both books completely fail to capture the amazing grain of that wood, however, I thought that most of the pictures where pretty good in both books overall.

On average "World Woods" probably includes just a little bit more information on the working qualities of most woods but both books are somewhat thin in this area, at least from a woodworker's perspective.

"Useful Woods" was written in the US where "World Woods" was written in England. This shows in a number of areas, the most important of which are the woods included and the availability information about the woods. This was the final deciding point for me. I figured that everything else being about equal, which I judged it to be, it made more sense for me to get a book that focused on the woods I can get here in the US and that gives me availability information that is focused on the US Market.

So, I went ahead and bought "A Guide to Useful Woods of the World" and so far I'm happy with my choice. ... Read more
