"Examines the professional lives of gay men, exploring the various strategies they have developed for managing their sexual identity--from disguising or revealing it to avoiding the subject altogether. Studies the consequences of each choice."--© zebraz

5-0 out of 5 stars NO STRAIGHT PERSON SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO READ THIS BOOK EVER!
This book is a study of the tactics that gay men use to keep their sexual orientation hidden from their (often homophobic) co-workers.It scares me how accurate it is.Let me give you an example, I once had a male teacher who said, "I was once going out with this woman who blah, blah, blah."Well, many straight people would think, "Okay, girlfriend equals straight."But a critical reader would see that the man said, "Once!"Many openly gay men used to date women. This book mentions tactics like acting weird so that co-workers just dismiss you as asexual, emphasizing your love of sports in order to hide the fact that you're not involved with a woman, being so liberal that when you mention gay rights co-workers think you are a leftist rather than gay, etc.If straight people read this book, gay men would never be able to hide. This book was both a gift and a weapon. Some have critiqued it asking why anyone would want to study, and subconsciously encourage, men to be closeted. However, this book does talk to men about their being out in the workplace and how they did it.We need more studies like this.I thoroughly enjoyed this book. However, it could be incredibly dangerous if placed in the wrong hands. ... Product Description

During the economic boom of the 1990s, art museums expanded dramatically in size, scope, and ambition. They came to be seen as new civic centers: on the one hand as places of entertainment, leisure, and commerce, on the other as socially therapeutic institutions. But museums were also criticized for everything from elitism to looting or illegally exporting works from other countries, to exhibiting works offensive to the public taste.

Whose Muse? brings together five directors of leading American and British art museums who together offer a forward-looking alternative to such prevailing views. While their approaches differ, certain themes recur: As museums have become increasingly complex and costly to manage, and as government support has waned, the temptation is great to follow policies driven not by a mission but by the market. However, the directors concur that public trust can be upheld only if museums continue to see their core mission as building collections that reflect a nation's artistic legacy and providing informed and unfettered access to them.

The book, based on a lecture series of the same title held in 2000-2001 by the Harvard Program for Art Museum Directors, also includes an introduction by Cuno and a fascinating--and surprisingly frank--roundtable discussion among the participating directors. A rare collection of sustained reflections by prominent museum directors on the current state of affairs in their profession, this book is without equal. It will be read widely not only by museum professionals, trustees, critics, and scholars, but also by the art-loving public itself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Whose Museum Is It Anyway?
With everything from motorcycles, cars, boats, Jackie O's clothes, Star Wars artifacts, elephant dung and more finding their way into the museum, this is probably a good time to examine just what the museum is and who it is for. Art Institute of Chicago director James Cuno has assembled a veritable who's who of major museum directors to hold forth on this topic. Taken together, the essays provide rare insight into how museums are being shaped in the 20th century. With sometimes surprising candor the directors make their case for how and why the museum is beholden to the public trust. A roundtable discussion at the book's end further amplifies the issues set forth in the essays. This is an important book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not a boring subject!
This is a compilation of essays written by directors of major art museums: Cuno from the Art Institute of Chicago, De Montebello from the Met, Lowry from the MoMA, MacGregor from the British Museum, Walsh of the Getty in LA, and Wood, formerly of the AIC.Each addresses how museums can cultivate public trust in cultural institutions, the kinds of authority museums have, and how they should manage their responsibilities.MacGregor's essay was my personal favorite; it includes two amazing stories of how art proves to be valued for its emotional power during times of crisis (specifically on 9/11 and during WWII).Walsh offers suggestions as to how museums can offer its visitors a more genuine experience through curatorial choices and placement of lighting and seats.Lowry and De Montebello write about the relationship of the entertainment industry to museums.A very accessible, jargon-free text that is surprisingly interesting. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic basic American cooking before the food industry corrupted it
It's hard to rate this book next to modern cookbooks, but for it's age, it's a classic.

If you haven't bought into the low-fat, low-cholesterol,
hydrogenated-waste-vegetable-oil-is-good-for-you koolaid of the last 40 years, this
book is full of fantastic recipes and a reminder of when food tasted good without
added emulsifiers and solubized whey protein.
(if you have, ask yourself why Americans drastically DID cut the saturated/animal fat,
cholesterol, and fat out of their diet over the last 30 years and yet obesity,
diabetes, CHD, and cancer went through the roof.)

I love the fact that almost every recipe includes butter (or pork lard or bacon fat
or beef drippings).I love that the sauces have heavy cream. And eggs are prominently
featured in everything.I don't think I saw skim milk mentioned. My grandparents
and great-grandparents could have made many of the dishes with what they had on the
farm, supplemented by a few staples from the grocery such as flour and sugar.

Each recipe is usually only a minimal number of ingredients, all of which are
at every grocery store (with the possible exception of squab :)).
It's sad that he notes the best eggs are fresh ones that have never been
cooled.Try finding that nowadays. In 1959, you still had a milk
and egg man deliver yours every day.

Almost every recipe has several variations listed.

To give you an idea of how people ate in 1959--the dessert section is only 20 pages
and the grains section 5 pages out of a 500 page book.

Minuses are related to it's age. This is the better cooking of the European American
immigration. The influence of Asian, Hispanic, and Indian cooking is completely absent.

Other minuses are that it is not heavy into the explanations or reasoning behind
cooking. It's purely focused on cooking the dish.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is out of print but shouldn't be...
Bought this because I had never seen it before I found this on-line.Good cookbook; it does reflect the state of cookery in the 1960's so some of the receipes use ingredients more commonly available then. Still excellent and ahead of it's time.

5-0 out of 5 stars cook bookreview
Bought thisbook for my wife and she was VERY HAPPY with it.Said used, but it looked new

5-0 out of 5 stars Classics, done correctly, never go out of style.
James Beard was a cooking guru, mentor and author of many books and was, along with Julia Child, one of the two pillars for me when I learned to cook as a pre-teen. Our family didn't really get into exotic foods other than Chinese until my parents started traveling overseas for work. Then of course, the home cuisine changed from my mom's Kansas-inspired meat-and-potato to true lasagne, canneloni, crepes, smorbrod Danish sandwiches and even pressed tongue and cold beef terrine. But our family really liked American standards, and this book was helpful for me to learn pasta, macaroni and cheese, and one of the best corned beef hash there is.

James Beard was a gourmet who had the knack of loving simple foods done correctly, and he could explain, with enthusiasm, the best way to make a macaroni and cheese or why his Cuban bread was so luscious and tasty. This book, though containing what we might consider "dated" comfort foods, is a worthy place to begin learning basic household cooking even if the fat and carbohydrate levels are something to make your eyes bug out. (Take your cholesterol meds before even just reading through the mac and cheese recipe.)

I despair today about American food. It's not just the unhealthy, tasteless nature of fast foods, it's the fact that meals are not prepared with care, and the simplest ingredients are suspect, laden with preservatives, fake flavors, sweeteners and other unwanted additives. It's getting increasingly hard to find simple, well-made food, and most people don't even sit down to dinner together even once a week, let alone every night as we did.

You can adapt these recipes using lower-fat ingredients (skim milk, low fat cheeses, turkey instead of beef) and you can eat them in moderation. But if you want to learn basic, good American cooking, this book is one of the best. I'm on my third copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless recipe book
I received this same cookbook when I got married 31 years ago.It is a timeless recipe book.I was thrilled to find the exact same edition. My first one was in four pieces and held together with rubber bands. This one is in great condition for the age and is in one piece!!! ... Read more

Product Description
From the Forest to the Sea: The Ecology of Wood in Streams, Rivers, Estuaries and Oceans is a fascinating new scientific work that discusses the role wood plays in very complex and diverse aquatic ecosystems. Until now almost nothing has been published on this little understood topic. 1. Wood in streams and rivers is a source of food energy for invertebrate organisms; habitat for vertebrate organisms, such as fish; and a structural component that shapes, diversifies, and stabilizes channels while helping to dissipate the water's energy before it can scour channels.2. Wood in estuaries is a major source of food and habitat for obligatory, wood boring, marine invertebrates that in their feeding , break it down and pass usable carbon into the water's current where it enters the detrital based marine food web.3. Wood along the coastline stabilizes sand spits, beaches, and dune complexes, as well as battering rocky shores where it creates new habitats for intertidal organisms and provides small splinters of wood to the coastal food chain.4. Driftwood floating in the open ocean attracts a variety of marine invertebrates and fishes, forming a floating surface community that help organisms colonize new areas. Large fishes, such as tuna, not only feed on smaller fishes attracted to the wood but also drift with it because its movement is controlled by wind and current; thus tuna find the best feeding areas-current interfaces rich in food species. 5. A common textbook perception on marine biology is that, while communities of bacteria can use sulfur compounds as energy and animals can and do live around deep-sea hydrothermal vents through which hot water issues in the ocean's floor, the rest of the oceans bottom is almost devoid of life. But as driftwood becomes waterlogged and sinks, it represents terrestrially-fixed carbon in the energy poor deep-sea where at least three species of wood-borers convert it into a readily available source of detritus that in turn supports the development of complex communities of bottom-dwelling organisms.6. The loss of wood to aquatic ecosystems means destabilization of streams, estuaries, dunes and beaches as well as food chains in the oceans of the world. Sooner or later it may mean the loss of jobs and unique cultural ways of life such as the commercial fishing of certain species. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Indigenous Transcendence
Henry David Thoreau wrote, "It matters not how far you travel, but how much you are alive," and Jim LeMonds, a former English teacher of mine in the small "mill-town" city of Longview, WA embodies this phrase in his tight, solid prose and compassionate understanding of the area and it's people. For anybody to understand the psyche of this area, the Pacific Northwest, I recommend not only living here and listening, but also a cold plunge into the severely deprived art scene and it's few vibrant sectors.Jim LeMonds, in South of Seattle, provides us with one of these. My favorite essay was Scripture For The Land, for it's sheer intensity and truths.

5-0 out of 5 stars I would like to introduce you to the LeMonds family.
Jim has captured the life of small town America. More precisely small town Pacific Northwest where the largest employer is the lumber companies and the county fair still attracks the whole town. Jim brings to light some ofthe hardships and personal obstacles that impede the daily lives of eventhe most simple lives. The memories that Jim shares will most definitelymake you laugh and may even bring you to tears. An intimate exploration ofa great geographical area.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Former Student's Opinion
I am a former English student of the author of "South of Seattle,"and not only is this man an exceptional teacher, but he is the only writer of my acquaintance to so vibrantly capture the spirit of life in the ever-growing Pacific Northwest--roots, leaves, rain, et al.If you want to experience a small lumber town and are unfourtunate enough not to have been born and raised there, then take your next best option as an outsider and read this book. This journey through time and terrain is all the more meaningful due to the obvious love the author feels for his topic.Don't miss this one... ...
