Product Description
Former Playboy centerfold and soft-porn movie actress Xuxa (SHOO-sha) emerged in the 1980s as Brazil's mass media megastar. Through her children's television show, which reaches millions of people in Latin America and the United States, this blond sex symbol has attained extraordinary cultural authority. Reaching far beyond younger audiences, Xuxa's show informs the culture at large about gender relations, racial democracy, and idealized beauty. Backed by Brazil's TV Globo, the fourth-largest commercial network in the world, Xuxa has built an empire. Amelia Simoson's colorful portrayal is the first book to explore how Xuxa's representation of femininity, her privileging of a white ideal of beauty, and her promotional approach to culture perpetuate inequality on an unprecedented scale. Simpson's thoughtful analysis exposes the complicity of a mass audience eager to celebrate Xuxa's deeply compromised representations of gender, race, and modernity. "Xuxa" also explores the meaning behind the myth Xuxa's long-term relationship with Brazil's soccer idol, Pele, and the near-worship of her atypical blond, blue-eyed appearance by Brazil's population. As the author examines Xuxa's suggestive style juxtaposed with juvenile entertainment, and the phenomenon of Xuxa-look-alike teenaged paquitas, she unfold the symbolic territory of blond sex symbols worldwide. Amelia Simpson teaches in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures at the University of Florida. She recently edited and translated "New Tales of Mystery" and "Crime form Latin America" (1992). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Xuxa is not to blame for Brazil's problems or the troubles of America's feminists
Don't blame Xuxa for Brazil's problems. They are the result of American corporate fascism's take-over of the country. The screed of American feminist puritanism is a joke. They hate Xuxa because she loves children instead of aborting them.

3-0 out of 5 stars Xuxa can not be blamed for all of Brazil's social problems.
The book definately fills in some background information on Xuxa that mostUS fans do not have. However, the author has surprisingly little to sayabout Xuxa. Nearly every paragraph has a footnote referencing anarticle/interview written by someone else. This book is more of acollection of other people's comments and quotes about Xuxa (or from Xuxa)and her impact on Brazilian society. The book in many ways tries to linkXuxa with many social problems facing Brazil including: racisim, the classsystem, declining school attendance, illiteracy, teen pregnancy, bulimia, and the sexual exploitation of children. Wow, has she been busy! I thinkthat Xuxa represents some "ideals" to the Brazilian society, butto almost blame her for the continuation of these problems seems a littlemuch. I recommend the book for anyone wanting to learn more about Xuxahistory (good and bad)and her rise to fame. This book is not for theaverage fan.

4-0 out of 5 stars Puts the Xuxa phenomenon into perspective
Xuxa's syndicated show on American TV may have been a flop, but this scholarly book remains an interesting study of the Brazilian entertainer.Amelia Simpson interleaves biographical information with background material on the Brazilian entertainment industry, combined with a very insightful analysis of Xuxa's incredible fame among the impoverished populations of South America. At times the writing comes across a little bit like a thesis composed by an overly earnest grad student. This has, to some extent, the odd effect of legitimizing Xuxa's appeal as transcending that of a mere pop culture icon. If anybody was truly qualified to play Evita, it is Xuxa. She was, after all, born very close to the border of Argentina. ... Read more

Excerpt: The Howard Street Tunnel fire (also known as the Baltimore Freight Rail Crash) was a 60-car CSX Transportation freight train derailment that occurred in a freight through-route tunnel under Howard Street in Baltimore, Maryland, on July 18, 2001. The derailment sparked a chemical fire that raged for five or six days and virtually shut down the downtown area. In the evening of the first day, a water main ruptured causing significant flooding in the streets above. The accident disrupted east coast rail service. It also slowed Internet service in the US for several hours due to the destruction of a cable passing through the tunnel. The train consisted of 60 cars. Cars 46 through 56 derailed in the tunnel, at 3:08 PM, and became disconnected from the first 45 cars. The train came to a halt due to an air brake, but the crew didn't know that a derailment had taken place. Around 3:26 they moved the locomotives out of the tunnel. Around 4 PM smoke was seen coming from a sewer near the intersection of Howard and Lombard Streets, and the fire department was notified. Later, smoke emerged from the ends of the tunnel and from several manholes. Eventually it was found that one of the derailed tank cars, carrying tripropylene, had ruptured and the escaping flammable liquid had caught fire. This fire also ignited paper and wood products in other cars. Another tank car ruptured releasing 2554 gallons of hydrochloric acid. Around 6:15 a 40-inch cast iron water main above the tunnel burst due to deformation, eventually releasing about 14 million gallons of water. The fire burned for about 5 days....More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1093594 ... Read more

Excerpt: Pedro II (Portuguese pronunciation: ; English: Peter II; 2 December, 1825 5 December, 1891), nicknamed "the Magnanimous" was the second and last ruler of the Empire of Brazil, having reigned for over 58 years. His name in full was Pedro de Alcântara João Carlos Leopoldo Salvador Bibiano Francisco Xavier de Paula Leocádio Miguel Gabriel Rafael Gonzaga (English: Peter of Alcantara John Charles Leopold Salvador Vivian Francis Xavier of Paula Leocadio Michael Gabriel Raphael Gonzaga.). He was born in Rio de Janeiro, the seventh child of Emperor Dom Pedro I of Brazil and Archduchess Maria Leopoldina of Austria. The Emperor was a member of the Brazilian branch of the House of Braganza and was referred to using the honorific "Dom". His father's abrupt abdication and flight to Europe left a five-year-old Pedro as Emperor and led to a grim and lonely childhood and adolescence. Obliged to spend his time in studying in preparation for rule, he knew only brief moments of happiness and encountered few friends of his age. Living in the midst of court intrigues and political disputes were seminal influences which later showed in his character. Pedro II grew into a man having a strong sense of duty and devotion toward his country and his people, but also one w...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=81473 ... Read more

Excerpt: The Xuxa Park Fire refers to a flash fire that erupted on a Brazilian TV soundstage in Rio de Janeiro during a 2001 taping of the children's television show Xuxa Park. The incident is noteworthy for having been captured on videotape, for the press coverage that followed, and for accusations about the fire made by some detractors of the show's host. Xuxa Park, which debuted in 1994, was a Brazilian children's TV show hosted by Brazilian superstar Xuxa, an actress, model and singer that became wildly popular with young viewers through her hosting of many similar shows in both Spanish and Portuguese (plus a one-season attempt at breaking into the U.S. television market with a show in English). While hailed by many for her talents and her love of children, she has also been a controversial figure due to her having previously posed for a Playboy magazine centerfold and also having played a prostitute in what some categorize as a "soft porn" film. She also hosted a more adult TV show concurrent with Xuxa Park -- in this show (Planeta Xuxa) she would, among other things, interview guests about their sexual habits. This history has led some to condemn her as an inappropriate role model for children. The show, consisting of games and musical numbers, took place on a colorful, futuristic set full of elaborate rides and props, among which was a mechanical "spaceship" through which Xuxa would normally enter the set at the start of the show, and leave at the end. A still frame from video of the fire less than 10 seconds after it started Mere seconds later, the set is engulfed in flames, and smoke darkens the soundstageOn January 11, 2001, a...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=11311255 ... Excerpt: Xuxa (Portuguese pronunciation: ), Maria da Graça "Xuxa" Meneghel, March 27, 1963, Santa Rosa, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil) is a Brazilian Grammy Award Winner, television actress, singer and children's television show host. Her various shows have been broadcast in Portuguese, Spanish, and English. Her achievements include the second best-selling album in the history of Brazil and being the singer with the second highest total of number-one hits by a female in the Brazilian charts, surpassed only by Daniela Mercury. Xuxa has some of the biggest box office results in Brazilian history and has amassed a fortune of over $100 million. Xuxa's father, Luiz Floriano, was in the military and stationed in Rio de Janeiro when she was 7. At age 15, Xuxa was followed home by a magazine publisher who spotted the blue-eyed blonde on the train and invited her to audition to be a model. A year later, she was on the cover of a Brazilian magazine. In 1980, Xuxa posed for another magazine with other Brazilian models and the great soccer legend Pelé. They had a six-year romance, which propelled her career forward. She was a centerfold for ELLE, Vogue, Cosmopolitan, NOVA and Playboy magazine's Brazilian edition in December 1982. She was only 20 when she was given her own variety TV show, Clube de Criança (Children's Club). She was an instant hit; her candor on camera and her way with kids caught the attention of Latin America's media giant, Globo TV. Os Trapalhões were the biggest comedy group in Brazil, and their show was a big hit with children and adults....More: http://booksllc.net/?id=551126 ... Read more
