4-0 out of 5 stars Needs an update for 2009
The book covers the basics and is a quick read with many pictures and diagrams.

To be a full buyers guide it needs to cover safety ratings, stopping distance, and depreciation rates.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting book stuffed with information
This is a very good book and I read it from cover to cover as soon as I got it. The author summarizes the various hybrid technologies and then dives into a model by model analysis of what was available at the time of writing, 2006, and as far into the future as the car manufacturers would let him peek.

There are two caveats however. This book may not age well as the information is so specific to current hybrid offerings, and more awkwardly, all of his MPG ratings are in a now-obsolete scheme. As of 2008 ALL fuel economy ratings have been recalculated using new formulas. For instance, the Toyota Prius, formerly rated at 60/51 city/hwy is now recalculated to 48/45. So none of the MPG values shown in this book will be found on any new car stickers you'll on the lot as of late 2007. These new numbers are said to reflect actual consumer experience more accurately.

That said, comparing MPG's for various vehicles within the book to each other is still perfectly valid. Or you can convert these old numbers to new using calculators on the www.fueleconomy.gov site.

5-0 out of 5 stars Accurate, good survey, sensible, easy read
By accident of timing, I was interviewed and quoted on pp. 8, "Bob Wilson", and am pleased with the accuracy. Since then, my understanding has improved but I still reject the "hypermiler" label. It doesn't take extreme driving to get excellent mileage. Hybrids are different but not some weird science project.

Nick's book is a terrific collection of the history of hybrids and the technology. He did his homework and his writing style is easy and factually complete. Even without page 8, the book is a great read.

4-0 out of 5 stars excellent resource for hybrid car purchasers
This is an excellent, clearly written book that brings together lots of different details about hybrid cars, all in one place.I would also recommend "Plug-In Hybrids: The Cars that will Recharge America" for some more information on hybrids around the world, and the new feature of converting a hybrid into a plug-in hybrid.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hybrid Info
Excellent resource, with diverse model information all in one place.Since the technology seems to be somewhat static this book provides good information, expecially if you are going to or have already purchased one of the Hybrids in the book.I'm still on the fence, but the Ford models are calling to me....I want 4wd. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I wet my pants.
I'll keep it brief. The reviews by Ant and H.Bala pretty much say it all, but I want to heap my praise on this book. This is absolutely the greatest.I've pretty much followed almost all the X-Men titles since 1985 or so.This series was utterly modern Marvel, while it also paid direct homage to the entire X-Men history in a way that made all that history meaningful and poignant.I actually shed tears reading this.Yes, it is a little melodramatic-- but once you accept that...

And Matt Fraction finally stopped using those stupid little boxes that identify the characters! In fact, you would hardly know it was Matt Fraction writing it-- all his little tics and imbecilities were gone.

I quite simply cannot wait to see what comes next!

5-0 out of 5 stars This would make an incredible movie
I read X-Men Second Coming and I simply can't believe it. This is one of the best comic series I've ever read in a very long time. This ranks with Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns, The Dark Knight Strikes Back, Man Machine Interface (Ghost In the Shell) and Superman Judgment Day.

But what's really incredible about Second Coming is even if you start out from here it can still work as a standalone movie. Speaking of which a movie based on Second Coming would flat out dominate the box office. But filming something like this may be impossible. Which is why I'm loving this comic book. This is without a doubt a keeper for the library. Getting this in hardcover is a must. So get it and don't look back. I had no regrets.

2-0 out of 5 stars Are you kidding me?
Why does fanboy forgive Emma Frost for her all so obnoxious "darlings"? She has blue eyes... and big,you know. Why does fanboy never grow sick of Scott Summers a.k.a. the greatest leader since Julius Ceasar? Why he bosses people around and he's Emma Frost's "Darling".Those two are SO TIRED. What a mess of a book this was, and who has all day to dissect it? Lets just put it this way, "Hope" you know, the one with the red hair, well, you certainly didnt think that red hair was a coincidence did you, need I say more on how the mutant race is saved? I think not. Oh Marvel, you're so freaking clever. Oh, this story just went on and on. It would have been so much better if all of the muties had been wiped out, because this really can't go on, can it? And of course theres the obligatory feminization of the black male, in this case prodigy, whose only contribution was to have a nervous breakdown when faced with the oncoming battle and then to teach us about Voodoo dolls. Well, Marvel has checked every box, all the pandering contrivances are in place, send me your "unhelpful reviews" and Amazon your credit card number. Grow up....

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Event
I'm telling you right now to pick this one up. X-Men has been so week since M-Day and this has just blown it out of the box. I can't wait to see the direction of this series.

Without doubt one of the best marvel events in the last 10 years.

5-0 out of 5 stars After years of foreplay, finally the X-Men's Second Coming
The stakes are always staggering now in the X-Men universe. For our merry band of mutants (who haven't been merry in a long while), it's gone beyond superheroing and now gone beyond merely shaking off humanity's prejudice. In the aftermath of the House of M, it's become a deadly struggle for survival, a case of impending genocide. But, hey, is that a flicker of hope way over yonder, at the end of the SECOND COMING arc? Maybe. Or maybe Chris Claremont, Patron Saint of Kicking Mutants to the Curb, is somewhere stabbing needles into tiny X-Men voodoo dolls.

SECOND COMING is the final arc in a trilogy begun with MESSIAH COMPLEX and MESSIAH WAR. The Messiah Complex arc a few years ago introduced Hope, the first mutant baby born since the House of M doomed mutantkind into extinction. Hope instantly became the focal point in a frantic race as the X-Men and other mutant groups try to be the first to reach her. Messiah Complex ended with Hope and her protector, Cable, time sliding to the future, and for a while the dust settled.

MESSIAH WAR, I think I won't go into that much. It's basically a time travel adventure as X-Force travels to the future and meets up with Cable and Hope, and they get into a fighty fight with Stryfe.

The Second Coming saga features the return of Cable and Hope to the present day world, with Hope now sixteen years old and veteran of countless narrow escapes. It doesn't take long for their presence to be noted not only by the X-Men but also by the opposition, which at this juncture is identified as Bastion, the mutant-hating robot sentinel from the future, and his resurrected cronies. And here we go again.

There are only 181 people with the X-gene now left on the planet, and so things are even more desperate, the scale even more epic. How has Scott Summers changed? Cyclops, over the past few years, has become a darker and more militant leader, and there's no time anymore to see things only in white or black. Ethics have been compromised. His faith and his pragmatism will cost him and his X-Men and will alienate some of his teammates. The secret of Cyclops' covert kill team comes out, and Nightcrawler and Storm are only two of those who aren't happy campers. I love the frenzied, all-out action, I love the all-inclusiveness as Cyclops pretty much calls for the entire mutant population on Utopia to help fight for their own lives, to defend Utopia and the besieged city of San Francisco. Bastion is such a formidable adversary, man, and has access to minions numbering in the thousands. And he commands other even more frightening resources. He's even got an infiltrator in Utopia. Step by calculating step, Bastion strips away the X-Men's best tactical assets. For the mutants, reeling at the precipice, that sense of desperation rises and rises.

Bastion will stop at nothing to kill Hope. The battle-hardened, grown callous Cyclops will sacrifice everyone to keep her safe. So, yes, there are fatalities. One longtime, beloved character buys it. There are many occasions for various X-Men to step up, and they do. I, for one, appreciate that Doug Ramsay has a pivotal role to play here. I love all the high stakes drama. In the end, was it all worth it? I won't say.

I love trades, man. It so simplifies the keeping track of these crossover comics, makes for better, non-stop reading, too, and you're better able to absorb the writers' juggling of the huge assembly of characters and the handling of the sprawling plot threads. Accordingly, X-MEN SECOND COMING collects SECOND COMING: PREPARE, X-MEN: SECOND COMING #1-2, UNCANNY X-MEN #523-525, NEW MUTANTS #12-14, X-MEN LEGACY #235-237, and X-FORCE #26-28. All these issues combine to shape an epic story arc, and I am very curious now to see where Marvel is going with Hope. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Is this worth reading? The mileage may vary.
I'm thinking, 3.5 out of 5 stars for this one. This trade unveils some okay stories and some pretty good stories. X-MEN: SECOND COMING: REVELATIONS is an addendum to the epic "Second Coming" event that recently steamrolled thru the core X-Men titles. The stories reprinted here basically serve to fill in the various gaps and spaces that were overlooked or left unattended. The issues collected in this trade are: X-MEN: HOPE, X-MEN: BLIND SCIENCE, the limited series X-MEN: HELLBOUND #1-3, and X-FACTOR #204-206.

Been a few years now since X-MEN: MESSIAH COMPLEX, which culminated with Cable time traveling into the future with the baby Hope, that course of action deemed by Cyclops to be the best way to keep her safe. This X-MEN: HOPE one-shot is a bridging story that re-introduces us to Hope and Cable (I guess in case we forgot who they were in the past two and a half years). This sets the stage for the Second Coming event. This is also the cliff notes attempt at breaking down the relationship dynamics between Cable and his young charge, Hope. This story, told in four vignettes, tends to skip ahead years at a time, spanning Hope's short life - up to just before Second Coming kicks off - and touching on Cable's tough love training methods. Even as Hope grows in skill, it's not surprising - if you know Cable - that she still finds herself fighting to earn crumbs of approval from her cyborg guardian. Duane Swierczynski writes the thing well enough that there actually are a few touching moments to savor here and there, although I do think that the vignettes' short length keeps Swierczynski from really sinking his teeth into Hope's hard-earned life lesson moments. And where was Bishop in all this? One big honking plus is that Steve Dillon handles the art chores. Dude's awesome.

Back in the present, things are poppin' in San Francisco and on Utopia, just a few miles off the coast. The X-MEN: BLIND SCIENCE one-shot features the X-Club, that tiny cadre of brilliant minds that Cyclops often relies on for his science needs. Dr. Nemesis, Dr. Kavita Rao, and that kooky guy Madison Jeffries are yanked forward to a terrifying future in which Hope's powers had run amok and devastated the world. Paul Davidson draws the story okay. Simon Spurrier writes the story, and it's a shame that early on he pretty much gives away the plot twist.

I'm not that familiar with the X-Club, so I'm not sure if Dr. Nemesis is normally this strident and bullying, but the way he was browbeating Dr. Rao, well, the most satisfying bit in this story - for me, anyway - may well be in seeing Dr. Nemesis get taken down a peg or two, and by none other than Dr. Rao herself. If you're a fan of the X-Men's science team, then X-MEN: BLIND SCIENCE is worth reading. Kavita Rao is the central character here, with Dr. Nemesis acting the lout and Madison Jeffries portrayed as this seemingly brain-addled non-entity. You get to see these three characters in action, and without the more generic superheroes hovering over them and cramping their style. And when I say "see them in action," what I mean is that they flee a lot and squabble and then Dr. Rao applies her wits. Ultimately, this story feels like a filler and doesn't really add anything to the Second Coming saga. But I certainly wouldn't mind seeing the X-Club off on their own outing again, with a hopefully more comprehensible Madison Jeffries.

Continuity-wise, the X-MEN: HELLBOUND limited series falls smackdab in the middle of the Second Coming storyline. What had happened was this: When Illyana Rasputin (a.k.a. Magik) tried to teleport Hope and Cable to safety, her attempt was sabotaged and she ended up trapped in the demonic Limbo dimension. With the X-Men readying themselves for Bastion's all-out assault on Utopia, it's up to Sam Guthrie (a.k.a. Cannonball) to assemble a team to rescue Magik, except that none of the team members handpicked by Cannonball is a heavy hitter (Cyclops hogged for himself the most powerful X-Men because of, you know, Bastion's impending all-out assault). Sam Guthrie is gonna wish he'd brought a bunch of heavy hitters. He'll also wish he'd left Gambit behind. And, as always, Pixie isn't too shy of voicing her mean opinion of Illyana. Chris Yost writes and Harvey Tolibao & Tom Raney provide the pencils in this action-packed, demon-stomping, Illyana Rasputin-bashing, Cannonball's leadership skills-doubting adventure. I liked it.

Meanwhile, in the Big Apple... No, X-Factor hasn't joined the X-Men and the rest of the mutants on Utopia. Yes, X-Factor still hangs its shingle in New York, still runs a legitimate investigations firm. But X-Factor is comprised of mutants (and Rictor), and so Bastion, that Super-Sentinel doofus from the future, will not tolerate X-Factor's existence. Thus, the MRD (Mutant Response Division) is tasked to take out Maddox and company... except that the Multiple Man has a bit of clever in him. A unit is even deployed to South America after Monet and Strong Guy, both of whom have gone to rescue Monet's kidnapped father (except that they then ran into Baron Mordo). Peter David, who's been terrific for a long, long time now (and he's somehow made Shatterstar interesting), contributes the text captions and the word and thought bubbles for one of the most overlooked titles in Marvel. Valentine de Landro brings the visuals, and he doesn't suck. I have to say that I've really enjoyed the Second Coming event, and these tie-in side stories we get here are fairly enjoyable stuff. Mostly. ... Read more
