5-0 out of 5 stars The Life and Times of Loretta Young
This book is pretty straight forward. Like the title says this is a book about Loretta Youngs life; loves, Clark Gable, Spencer Tracey, Tom Lewis, etc, etc.; and faith one of the mainstays in her life threw all the good and bad times she experienced.

All in all a very good book about Loretta Young. The best part about it is that finally Loretta admitted that Judy Lewis was her biological child with Clark Gable.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting
The book was interesting and I learned more about Loretta Young's life.I agree, it was a bit "candy coated", but I think it explains the "sign of the times" and that is where she was in her life.I think it is great that she had such a strong faith in God and that her religion played a very important part of her life. Her life is a good example for others. In this day and time, we let too much just "hang out there".It would be nice if our world was a little more "reserved".

1-0 out of 5 stars What a disappointment
Whilst Loretta Young unquestionably lead an interesting life, you would not know it from this whitewashed, saintly version. This book would have been far better promoted as a commentary on Loretta Young and her relationship with god. Certainly those readers wanting to know about her experiences in Hollywood in the 1930s would be disappointed. Her screen career was largely glossed over - we are talking about a woman who worked with pioneers such as Lon Chaney - you'd barely know it from this book. Similarly, there was little on her relationship with her sisters or any comments of substance about their lives or careers. Even the more 'scandalous' elements of her life were only worth a couple of pages - the rest of the book was more like a conversion exercise. Whilst the religious element was obviously something that influenced who she was as a person, the author did not delve beyond this.It is an injustice if this is the best that can be offered in her memory.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great recovery
She is not like you would have imagined from the TV Show. She had a lot more going on than the glamour that she displayed with her swirling entries each week.
She was not the angel one might think either but she was human and she faced it, or not, within the pages of this book. She sometimes came off as a saint and sometimes as naive but you did not always believe she could be THAT naive.Other times she came of as competent and adult, which, in my book makes her as real as a Hollywood siren can be.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Gospel According to Loretta
This book is written through Ms. Young's eyes and appears to be her somewhat romanticized and (more importantly)spiritualized take on life. She tends to gloss over the tawdry or questionable aspects while dwelling on the spiritual aspects. Having read her daughter Judy's book, I can clearly see that there was a lot of moral conflict in her mind and this book was clearly a good way to absolve herself of most of the negatives in her life. That said, the book is an o.k. read once you begin to differentiate the truth from the romantic fiction. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Bad Book
I found this book to be very dry. It is the cut and paste life of Loretta Young, with many errors that I have found from reading other matterial about her life. There is even a lie that they tell as the truth. They write that a woman came forward to say that Loretta Young gave birth secretly to a baby in a Catholic Hospital. That is very untrue. While Loretta Young did give birth to a baby she gave birth to the baby in a house that she and her mother owned, not at a hospital.

I would not recommend this book if I wanted to know about Loretta Young. I would recommend Uncommon Knowledge or Forever Young-the Life, Loves, and enduring faith of a Hollywood Ledgend instead of this book. ... Read more

Book Description

From Rudolph Valentino to Leonardo di Caprio and from Veronica Lake to Kim Basinger, Hollywood movies and their legendary stars have influenced popular fashion since the earliest days of silent film.

Hollywood Dressed & Undressed pairs classic and current film photographs with costume expert Sandy Schreier's lively anecdotes and facts about favorite Hollywood movies stars, their unforgettable costumes, and the designers behind them.Schreier transports the reader through seven decades of Hollywood film in chapters exploring such themes as "working women" good and bad, the influence of French couture on Hollywood costume design, and star-power accessories like cigarettes and furs.

Schreier shares true stories gleaned from research and rare personal interviews with such movie industry insiders as costume designer Edith Head, screenwriter Elmore Leonard, and Madonna, among others.

A highly entertaining raid on Hollywood's closets, Hollywood Dressed and Undressed is a must for film buffs, fashion cognoscenti, and devotees of American pop culture.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fine pictorial overview of Hollywood fashion
As someone who's interested in fashion history (and who runs awebsite dedicated to the role of opera gloves in the history offashion and the movies, I found this book an excellent visual introduction to the importance of fashion in Hollywood. The writing is snappy and breezy, and the pictures (which, after all, *is* why you're buying this book - isn't it?) are gorgeous.Truth in packaging compels me to reveal that I read this book at my local library, but it's definitely on my wish list!END

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT STORIES AND PHOTOS
I AM A HOLLYWOOD NUT. . .I love everything about the movies. At last, here is a new twist, by an author who seems to love the movies as much as I do.Thanks, Sandy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great photos with informative and entertaining stories
I purchased a copy of this book because so many of my favorite actors were shown in great photos. I started reading the captions and chuckled at the quick quips and short anecdotes. I ended up buying more copies as gifts. This book has turned out to be one of the best books I have ever given. Ihope others will get it for their library. It's not only for movie buffs, but the great photos and stories make a fun afternoon read.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you love Hollywood -- you'll love this book!
I have seen Ms. Schreier on the A&E Channel on several occasions over the last few months discussing hollywood fashion in the movies -- she always provides so many great inside tidbits that I had to go and buy thisbook. The book did not disappoint! As a 40 year lover of the movies -- Ifound her stories enlightening as well as very entertaining. I can't waitfor the sequel!

1-0 out of 5 stars The Enquirer seems reputable compared to this drivel.
Again, someone who is relying on old outdated myths and legend has written a book for sensationalism.Shreier's treatment of Clara Bow and Marion Davies is shameful to say the least considering all the facts that havebeen unearthed in recent years regarding both ladies.Bow triumphed at Foxwith her two final films, and it was HER OWN idea to retire to Nevada withher rancher husband Rex Bell; Fox begged Clara to stay.Davies was one ofthe most gifted and well loved clowns of her era.She is accumulating awealth of latter day fans who are discovering this fact. While stifledunder some of the more lofty productions hoisted on her by Hearst, Marionwas brilliantly funny in many films and also retired (as many of theleading ladies did at the time) when she hit 40.If you pick up this book, please read Shreier like Mother Goose, either way it's all fantasy.Let'stry to find the real facts when proposing to talk about other peopleslives. ... Product Description
"After a 23 year absence, Oscar and three-time Emmy winner Loretta Young returns to television in this heartwarming drama to play Amanda Kingsley, a spirited and somewhat eccentric millionairess who owns 51% of one of the largest companies in the United States. Along with her dignified servant, Maitland, she gives food and money to the homeless and unfortunate in New York City. Although Amanda's son Andrew runs the family business, he is jealous of his mother's power in the corporation and upset by her charitable ways. Heartless, cold and calculating, Andrew alienates his own three children and eventually drives them away. As the holidays near, Amanda goes to great lengths to get her grandchildren back to New York for one last Christmas reunion. It all comes to a climax as her hired detective tracks them down while, at the same time, Andrew and his lawyers are preparing to go to court to charge Amanda with incompetence in managing her wealth. Amanda's enduring love and faith in her family do prevail to enable her to bring them all together for 'Christmas Eve.'" [from back cover of case] ... Read more

Product Description
Superb original 8" x 10" Columbia Studios publicity portrait of Loretta Young in costume for "The Men In Her Life." The film, directed by Gregory Ratoff is forgotten today and starred Ms. Young as a 19th Century ballerina of all things. However the gown designed by Charles Le Maire she is wearing in the photo is magnificent. Photographer not credited. Old staple marks to to white margin and line of writing on the bottom white margin, and the usual toning otherwise fine. ... Read more
