Product Description
It’s never been more important to engage a child's scientific curiosity, and Sean Connolly knows just how to do it—with lively, hands-on, seemingly "dangerous" experiments that pop, ooze, crash, and teach! Now, the author of The Book of Totally Irresponsible Science, takes it one step further: He leads kids through the history of science, and then creates amazing yet simple experiments that demonstrate key scientific principles.

Tame fire just like a Neanderthal with the Fahrenheit 451 experiment. Round up all your friends and track the spread of "disease" using body glitter with an experiment inspired by Edward Jenner, the vaccination pioneer who's credited with saving more lives than any other person in history. Rediscover the wheel and axle with the ancient Sumerians, and perform an astounding experiment demonstrating the theory of angular momentum. Build a simple telescope—just like Galileo's—and find the four moons he discovered orbiting Jupiter (an act that helped land him in prison). Take a less potentially catastrophic approach to electricity than Ben Franklin did with the Lightning Mouth experiment. Re-create the Hadron Collider in a microwave with marshmallows, calculator, and a ruler—it won't jeopardize Earth with a simulated Big Bang, but will demonstrate the speed of light. And it's tasty!

By letting kids stand on the shoulders of Aristotle, Newton, Einstein, the Wright brothers, Marie Curie, Darwin, Watson and Crick, and more, The Book of Potentially Catastrophic Science is an uncommonly engaging guide to science, and the great stories of the men and women behind the science.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Fun!
Great book. My 10 year old son has carried this book around with him ALL summer long. If you have a boy who is into making "dangerous" ;-) things, this is the book for him.

5-0 out of 5 stars great resource for home and afterschool programs
This is a well edited book that has history, biography and other relevant background along with some pretty cool experiments. It's edgy enough for the middle school crowd and easy enough for younger kids if they have adult supervision. My neighbor, a teacher, "borrowed" it for a week. I had to order another!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great gift for kids
Received as a gift for the kids. They loved it...easy and fun. They've worked their way through a good number of the experiments, some alone and some with friends.Keeps them off the computer....

5-0 out of 5 stars The Book of Potentially Catastrophic Science
This is a clever book to demonstrate basic laws of science using items that are right around the house or easily available.

5-0 out of 5 stars Potentially catastrophic science
Good over view of the history involved in many area of science, many in physics.Good work. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE FOR ANY DESIGNER OR DESIGN ENTHUSIAST
Even through its subtle and discreet design, SoftSpace exudes sexiness in the most understated way. It captures the very difficult to define LOUD whisper of the contemporary in the most unorthodox way. It defines the contemporary aspirations of Design with very broad strokes crossing disciplines as varied as fashion, style, sociology etc. An important book if you seek currency in your design library or a great gift for the design/architecture enthusiast.

5-0 out of 5 stars Softspace- the bending of technology towards architectural design
Although compiled to benefit the architectural industry and academic
community, Softspace turns out to be accessible to anyone interested
in the life cycle of human culture and civilization and its ability to
adapt and embrace a new paradigm. This well thought out collection of
works by talented essayists speaks to our growing need of creative use
of materials to further efforts of design. It challenges the reader to
rethink their surroundings and to explore beyond conventional wisdom
and methodology of architectural construction. The compilation is well
written, logically arranged and smartly appointed with imaginative
photography and illustration. I would strongly recommend Softspace to
architectural professionals, students and enthusiasts. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Bliss is Right
I liked this story! I love to read about black love and romance so I'm easy. The story had everything in it that you expect, romance, a little drama and a perfect man. I felt the wedding information was a little over the top (meaning too much information), but other than that it was a good read.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not So Blissful...
Alexis Shire is a schoolteacher who doesn't have time for love and chooses to concentrate on obtaining her education degrees. Her best friend introduces Alexis to her cousin, Jaeden. The two begin to date, are swept up into a whirlwind romance and Alexis agrees to be Jaeden's wife. They then begin to plan for their wedding which turns chaotic when both sets of family members get involved in the planning. Alexis gets frustrated. She calls off the wedding, they later make up the wedding goes on and the two live happily ever after.

Simple plot, right. Seems very cut and dry, right? Well, I'm afraid NOT.

Ms. Young turns a simple plot into a complicated one with too much emphasis on the actual wedding and not enough on the main characters. This book read like "How to Plan a Wedding for 300 Guests" as opposed to "The Alexis and Jaeden Story"

There are so many little things in this book that irked me. This review would be a mile long if I listed them all so, I'm just going to include the major issues I found ridiculous in this novel.

1. Alexis and Jaeden hardly start to date when he asks her to accompany him to New York with him on a business trip. For someone who gave him a hard time with her home phone number, she sure took no time to say yes to going to New York with him.

2. The busy-bodied mothers! These woman got on my nerves the most. They came out of nowhere and dominated the second half of the book. Along with cousin Poochie, and Luchie and Uncle Gator and everybody else Ms. Young could cram into this book. I lost count on the number of people who were introduced in this book. Too many people on page at the same time.

3. Jaedenwas like a mystery man. Once the wedding plans began, he disappeared. Now I'm sure this was what Ms. Young meant for this character to do. But if he is indeed working a deal for his company, it would have been nice to actually SEE him work the deal. He just vanished. There could have at least been a scene with him at a desk gazing lovingly at Alexis' picture wishing he could be with her. There was nothing. We never saw Jaeden on his own and saw his side of the story. As far as this reviewer is concerned, he could have been across town with one of Alexis' bridesmaids that was always missing from the dress-fitting sessions!

4. Throughout the whole book, someone was yelling. Whether it was Alexis' father yelling for his dinner, or Alexis' yelling at her parents or Jaeden yelling at his mother. That's right, HIS MOTHER. Someone was all these people did was holler. Remind me never to go to Taylor, Indiana. This reviewer would leave deaf.

5. There was a very disturbing scene when Alexis and Jaeden were arguing. She told him something he did not want to hear and he jumped out of the chair and walked towards her as if he were going to hit her. I thought I had misread until I read the following sentence that she moved away from him. So, we don't know much about Jaeden but, then he is almost revealed to be a woman-beater? Was he going to hit her? What was that all about? I thought this was s a romance. Jaeden came off too threatening.

On a positive note, I found the wedding information to be refreshing but, there was just too much of it. With the wedding plans, the meddling parents, invisible Jaeden and his deal, The wedding planners and the cast of thousands in this book, Alexis and Jaeden faded into the background when they should have stood out amongst the madness.

The love and chemistry between Alexis and Jaeden was not believable. They gave no indication to me that they were truly in love. The only tender moments that had were spent when they were dancing. In my opinion, Alexis should have married her Palm Pilot. She seemed to care and depend on that more than her intended.

I hope the second book is better, Ms. Young.

4-0 out of 5 stars My first romance was Total Bliss!!

After over 20 years, I am no longer a romance virgin and proud of it. I knew that if the novel, Total Bliss, was half as intriguing as its book cover, then it was going to be well worth the wait.

Being an avid mainstream reader for years, I didn't really know what to expect. So, I only read this book when I could give it my undivided attention to ensure that I gave it a fair chance and assessment. Before I knew it I was on the last page. I must say that I really enjoyed this book. Total Bliss pulled me right in from the first page.

Jaeden and Alexis's journey to the alter was sweet and captivating. (And I secretly longed to meet Jaeden.) Stephanie (Alexis's friend) and Alexis's family members were so familiar and their methods of relating to one another were completely relatable. Between the card-playing, barbeques, wedding planning stress, and meddling family- I was laughing, sighing, and almost crying.

Sean D. Young was able to spend pages and pages describing the planning of a wedding and somehow make it compelling.

Every once in a while a book comes along with a story I look forward to getting back to. This is one of them.

Thank You, Mrs. Young for a wonderful debut novel.

4-0 out of 5 stars A WONDERFUL LOVE STORY!!
I loved Jaeden from the beginning. He was strong, strong-willed, and sexy! Determined and romantic. Alexis was a beautiful and smart woman, who let love sneak up on her when she wasn't looking. This was a wonderful story of instant love, sweet and pure. I loved the mothers and there 'getting back together' antics when the stress of the wedding got too much for Alexis. It was always clear to see that these two loved each other through all the ups and downs. That's what made me root for them, stay in their corner until they officially said 'I Do!'. Sean, I'm very proud of you. You done real good! Keep up the good work, my friend! Be blessed! GO OUT, EVERYONE, BUY THIS BOOK!

4-0 out of 5 stars Silent Love
Sean D Young writes a delightful story about two young goal oriented people who finds it hard to allow their selves the room for joy but when love finds them it leaves them with nothing but joy and eyes for each other.

Alexis Shrine had goals to be an elementary school principal. She has her eyes on achieving this goal in ten years or less but in order to do it she has to maintain a tight schedule of teaching by day and being a student by night.Alexis is so focus on her dreams that she hasn't made time for anything social but when she finally makes time for it she is extremely please with what she finds.Jaeden Jefferson was a businessman with a goal and that goal was to take his business to the edge. When he meets Alexis, he isn't sure why but all of a sudden his goal becomes to get to know her.He finds himself falling in love but can his love for Alexis survive while he purses his business adventures?

Sean D Young might be the newest member of the literary world of romance, but I can tell from Total Bliss she has plans to be around for a while and she can plan a beautiful wedding. Not only did she keep it real she also maintains a heartfelt relationship between the two main characters.I tip my hat off to Mrs. Young for a job well done on her first piece.

5-0 out of 5 stars Warm, Sexy, and Funny!
In Sean D. Young's sophomore effort she introduces floral designer, Rose Hart and chef, and businessman, Marc Damon.Rose is five-nine and 220 pounds, so she's not your average romance heroine. She's lovely, strong and is devoted to her friends and family. It is at her best friend and cousin's wedding that she meets Marc and they experience instant attraction.Rose, at first, has trouble believing in Marc's sincerity. But he soon wins her over. With This Ring had all the elements a romance junkie craves: It was sensual, had a good plot with many surprises, and was hilarious.I read Ms. Young's first novel, Total Bliss. It was good, too, however I think she's only getting better as an author.I'm looking forward to reading Rose's sisters' stories in Ms. Young's upcoming Hearts and Flowers books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Love is unexpected
I enjoyed that this book captured the lady's of Hearts and Flowers from his first book Total Bliss. This book showed that love comes in all shapes and sizes. Their unexpected meet turned into a dream come true.Rose never thought she could find true love and Marc gave and showed her what true love is.I'm glad that this book did't have alot of drama in it and it showed how love should be when your prince comes along and sweeps you off of your feet. I hope that Mr. Young will have sequels showing the other sisters in their new found interest.Great book of an unexpected love.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not feeling this at all......
The characters were way too nice (hero and heroine) and he was definitely not agressive enough for me...I did like the fact that she was not your typical slim and slender female...we do come in all different sizes...but he was just too sweet..and I didn't expect that from a man who had an earring in his ear...not feeling this one at all...Total Bliss was much better..this is okay if you're looking for a sweet romance...has some good intimate scenes..but not for me... ... Product Description
THE SCROLL WILL DESTROY...

For generations, the copper scroll has remained buried, concealing the treasure it protects and the prophecy it contains. Now that secret is about to be unleashed. In the right hands, the scroll could bring about ancient Israel's freedom from Roman occupation, but used improperly, it could destroy her.

EVERYTHING THE MAN KNOWS...

After watching Roman soldiers murder his father and pillage his homeland, Barabbas, a warrior zealot and sworn protector of the scroll, has become a broken man, physically and emotionally. His quest for vengeance and Roman blood, his love for a peace loving woman, and his commitment to the mysterious scroll pull him in vastly different directions.

AND HE WILL BE KILLED...

Death and betrayal loom around every corner as Barabbas searches for a truth that he has yet to fully understand--the force that drives him forward and ultimately requests the ultimate sacrifice to be made by a man.

OR REMADE.

"Violent Sands by Sean Young is a rare novel that captures the imagination and transports you to another time, another way of life and makes it real. This is an impeccably researched historical thriller featuring a hero whose violent life as a Jewish zealot, fighting the Roman empire, is changed forever when he's charged with a mission that could destroy or free the nation of Israel...and, in truth, the entire world. Absolutely a must read!"-- Jeremy Robinson, bestselling author of The Didymus Contingency and Raising The Past ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Competent enough
About Barabbas the zealot freed by Pontius Pilate instead of Jesus of Nazareth & his search for a copper scroll to ignite a rebellion against the Romans. Competently written but for me didn't have that x-factor. It failed to soar & really drag me in & I felt it was too restrained for my taste however a good enough read & worth the admission price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great work of Historical Fiction
Maybe its because I haven't read fiction for a while, but I found this book totally engrossing. Of course, historical fiction has always been one of my favorites. This book is basically the story of Barabbas whom we all know better as the zealot who was freed from prison and replaced by Jesus on the cross. The book revolves around Barabbas and his band of zealots as they oppose Roman dominance in Judea. Their animosity towards their Roman overlords and the virulent battles that ensue present us with a view of a violent time in history complete with religious extremism and government corruption. Perhaps that much hasn't changed after two thousand years?

Most of the story takes place after his release from crucifixion. While Jesus plays a relatively minor role in the story, his followers provide a backdrop against which the violence is contrasted. Barabbas' release is actually part of the story and his zealous ways are contrasted with the new-found, peaceful beliefs of the followers of Christ. A quest for a hidden "copper scroll" that reveals the location of an ancient Jewish treasure provides the impetus that drives the story to its conclusion.Yes, greed, depravity, brutality, blind obedience to power, and treachery all play a part in the story. I should say no more lest I reveal the ending.

In short, if you are a Christian, don't let the fact that Jesus is not a central character throw you off. In no way does this book minimize Christ's importance or effect on civilization. If you are not of a religious bent, enjoy it for its' historical context and to catch a glimpse of a turbulent period. But most of all, read it because it is a great story that will have you turning pages and telling your friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent read, it will keep you interested to the end!
I usually read about 1 book a week and I was looking for something new and different. I certainly found that in Sean Young's new book. This book was thoroughly researched, well written and he keeps the pace up throughout the book. When I picked up the book I was interested in the Copper Scroll and the treasure that it was protecting, never suspecting the other plots that ran through the book. Action, suspense, romance, twists and turns and a lead character that you will grow to love. Sean now ranks at the top of my list of favorite authors and I highly recommend this book to anyone that enjoys a good read and interesting tale. I am looking forward to his next endeavor.

5-0 out of 5 stars An action filled and inspiring read
This book was extremely well written and very exciting. Great attention was given to historical detail, with vivid and vibrant settings. The main character struggles against oppression and his search for faith. All in an action packed format. A must read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible! One of the best books I have ever read.
The length of this book scared me at first. It's a long one. But I was very intrigued by the idea of a story of Barrabus, and so I was looking forward to this book's release. I can tell you I was not disappointed in the least.

The sheer amount of fight in Barrabus and the rest of the zealots is amazing. Strong charcters abound in this story, from Barrabus himself to Gaius the centurion to Deborah the prostitute to Leila the merchant's daughter. All of them important, and all of them well drawn and beleivable. This book really does take you back to another time and place, as author Jeremy Robinson has said. It's obvious a great deal of time was spent on research.

Start with Barrabus' quest to free Isreal from Rome, add a myserious copper scroll that hides a secret that could save or destroy nations, and mix in a prefect who will stop at nothing to get it. Stir those together and you have a fantastic story that more than once had me up past my bedtime because I simply could not sleep unless I knew what happened next.

Violent Sands is easily one of the best books I have ever read. I will be hoping for more work from Young in the future. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Ancient Greece for Young and Old
The cover of this book has a dynamic picture of the famous ancient Greek temple, the Parthenon, in Athens. The contents of this book are divided into two parts.Part one of the book focuses mostly on the history of ancient Greece from around 1600 B.C. in the late Bronze Age to about 100 B.C. when the Romans conquered the Greek civilization.Part two concentrates on Greek culture and society. Some of ancient Greece's most famous sites are reviewed as well as other aspects of Greek culture such as art, architecture, myths, everyday life, entertainment, and housing.A nice aspect of the book is the inclusion of two pages solely devoted to the world of Greek women, discussing their daily life, their roles in society, and influential Greek women. There are many beautiful photographs and illustrations (all with informative captions), a few diagrams, a table of dates, and numerous maps. And because Greece was divided into many small, independently ruled communities or city-states, the abundant use of maps is very important and helpful to readers. The atlas contains a lot of excellent information, but as a whole, the information did not flow from one topic to the next. It is best suited as a resource for studying special topics of interest rather than a book to read from cover to cover. It is also more appropriate for more advanced readers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun read - like all "Hack/Slash" titles
All Hack/Slash volumes are exactly what I expected. They are fun and easy to read. In fact I will copy and paste this review and put it down for all the other Hack/Slash Volumes I own.

This series is fun and that's all that matters to me when reading comics.

4-0 out of 5 stars a slight dissapointment
Compared to the first volume of Hack/Slash, this one's pencilling looks like there wasn't much effort putten in work. To make a long story short, most of the drawings looks pretty lame compared to the first book.
But the stories are actually pretty good!, maybe less than the first volume, but good. I really enjoyed reading this book, despite the graphics which you don't really care about after a few pages.
Nevertheless, the trailers part was very thrilling, and I'm looking forward to the next episodes on the way, and also for volume 3.

Enjoy

4-0 out of 5 stars Not quite as good as volume one but still a good read
This, like the first volume, is a collection of "episodes", each one basically a small scale slasher movie. This volume only has two of these stories, they're both just as good as those in the first volume. The characters, writing, dialogue, are all still good, but the artwork is drastically different in this, and in my opinion, not in a good way. Once you get used to it, though, it shouldn't get in the way of your enjoyment too much. I'm surprised that they're actually turning this series into a movie as it doesn't seem to be too widely known, but it should be interesting. ... Read more

After graduating from the Interlochen Arts Academy in 1970, Mintzer made his mark as a soloist, mainly on the tenor saxophone and the bass clarinet . In 2008, Bob succeeded pianist Shelly Berg to hold the Bowen H. "Buzz" McCoy and Barbara M. McCoy Endowed Chair in Jazz Studies at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music . Mintzer plays Selmer Mark VI saxophones fitted with Freddy Gregory mouthpieces . He uses Vandoren V16 reeds for the tenor sax, and Bari plastic reeds on his soprano sax and bass clarinet. He also plays an Akai EWI (electronic wind instrument), an older model of the 1000 series. For recording with Yellowjackets, Mintzer prefers a Sennheiser 441 microphone . Mintz... ... Read more
