This has led to a large number of commissions. Thus Other Worlds (1992-93) was written as a commission from the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra and the piano concerto Liquid Motion (1993) as a commission from Danish Radio for the pianist Per Salo. Woven Lines (1993) for clarinet solo was a commission from the Danish Young Tone Artist for Kari Kriikku and Verse-Reverse (1994) for winds, piano and bass was composed as a commission from the Dutch Ensemble de Volharding. Since then Fundal has finished his Traces for clarinet, violin, cello, and piano, a commission for the Borealis Ensemble in Iceland (premiered in November 1995 in Reykjavik), and he is now working on his violin concerto Floating Lines Broken Mirrors Karsten Fundal has received the Wilhelm Hansen Composer Prize 1994 and the Danish Composers Association Prize 1995. Extractions: Karsten Fundal (Denmark 1966) studied with Per Norgård, and spent a period with the American composer Morton Feldman shortly before he passed away in 1987. When only 18 years old, Fundal captured the undivided attention of the Copenhagen critics with his guitar piece Reflections. His first orchestral piece, Ballad, was premiered by the Ärhus Symphony Orchestra in April 1989, around the time when the Jutland Ensemble commissioned a new piece from Fundal. With support from the Danish Council of Arts Fundal wrote his Anelsernes Land, finished in December 1990 and premiered by the Jutland Ensemble one month later, on 27 January 1991. Anelsernes Land, (The Land of Mists), for wind quintet with piano In Anelsernes Land, (The Land of Mists) , he shows new aspects of his ability to control a refined, chromatic harmony which, in its use of triads, often borders on tonality, without sacrificing the independence of each individual voice. At first sight the score gives the impression of a closely meshed polyphonic tapestry, but a performance reveals moments of such innocent melodic simplicity as to evoke a dream-like Mahler. The explanation lies in a refined use of what Fundal calls 'mutual melodies' - points at which the individual lines meet each other - thus seducing the mind into hearing melodies within other melodies.

Karsten Fundal studied as a teenager with Hans Abrahamsen and Ib Nørholm, but around the age of 20 drew crucial inspiration from abroad: he met the American Morton Gould, and studied for a year with Louis Andriessen in Holland. Then he studied for two years in Århus with Per Nørgård and Karl Aage Rasmussen. Karsten Fundal had his breakthrough at the beginning of the 1990s with works like the sextet Anelsernes Land (Land of Mists) (1990), the orchestral piece Ballad (1991) and the piano concerto Liquid Motion (1993). Worth singling out among later works are the violin concerto Floating Lines - Broken Mirrors (1995-96).
